Cottonmouth and the End will absolutely capture the attention and imagination and heart of the children, teens, and adults who h By grandma's cookie jar I was recently invited to participate a book review/blog tour for the Cottonmouth series and have been sharing my reviews of Cottonmouth and the River and Cottonmouth and the Great Gift over the past two days. Today I'm very happy to share my final review of Cottonmouth and the End, the third and final book of the series.I absolutely stand by what I said; "these books are unlike anything I've ever read. The artwork is nothing short of amazing and the way it is used is unexpected and unique; really draws you into the story. The story itself is engaging, emotional and one which leaves you (or at least me) not sure what will happen next and hardly able to wait to read and discover what happens next. These books are amazing for these reasons, but even more so because of the message which is woven throughout this story."Cottonmouth and the EndAuthor/Illustrator - C.S. FritzPublisher - David C. CookAges - 8-12 (although it is actually for everyone!)Favorite Features -All the things I loved about the first two Cottonmouth books, I love even more in Cottonmouth and the End!Strong messages - how easy it is to be deceived and distracted by the darkness and how important it is for us to stay focused on the job and message Jesus has given to us! And, how the price can be high when we indulge our selfishness and choose to follow "darkness".I love the message of how Jesus' work on the cross "finished" loneliness, sadness and fear and gives us courage because we know this world and Satan does not really have the power - Jesus does and He overcame the world!I LOVE how when King Tug sends Freddie and Pox on their journey, he tells them they are not alone because He will always be with them and he loves them more than they will ever know.David C. Cook says; "Join Frederick Cottonmouth as he steps out of our world and into another in order to complete his mission. In this dramatic conclusion to young Freddie's story, he will face great challenges and conflicts. How will Freddie react when he comes face-to-face with true darkness? Parents and their children will savor this creative story which has the artistic sense of Where the Wild Things Are, the heart of Narnia, and the redemptive themes of sacrifice and friendship."I really loved this final edition of the Cottonmouth stories - especially when King Tug says, "I've been wanting to give these to you all along. You, Fredrick Cottonmouth, have a very special job to do. Like Pox, and many others, you are to spread my love like little kernels, planting them in the hearts of lonely children everywhere. Will you help me?" Without a doubt, this is a message I want my grandsons to hear, believe and take to heart; God has a very special job for them to do!Cottonmouth and the End will absolutely capture the attention and imagination and heart of the children, teens, and adults who hear and read it. It is a solid series, one you will want to read to your grandchildren/children, because not only is it an excellent story, but it is a gift. A gift which will give you the opportunity to have many important conversations with your grandchildren/children.

Fritz wraps up the Cottonmouth series with beautiful prose and engaging artwork. Our whole family has loved working our way through this series and look forward to the future work(s) of Mr. Fritz.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This concluding book gets closer to what I thought the whole series should have been like By Wayne A McCoy 'Cottonmouth and the End' concludes the series by C. S. Fritz. I wasn't really a huge fan of the first two volumes, but I did like this one a little more. The book begins by discussing why some folks are afraid of the dark. This is because when we last saw Frederick Cottonmouth, he was stuck in the dark. He was on his way to deliver a black egg for Tug and ran into the kind of trouble that ended the last book on a cliffhanger. With the return of an old enemy and some old friends, can he get out of the fix and continue on the mission he was given?I still think it should have been maybe two books or one larger book, but this book concludes things in a lot more satisfying way. I liked the way the black and white space was used during the story to show the battle between light and darkness. I think the bad guy characters are drawn in a way that little ones might find them scary. The message in this book is closer to what I thought the whole series might have been. Perhaps if I'd read the whole thing in one sitting, I might have been kinder to the earlier books, but I wanted to review them as a reader might: one at a time.I received a review copy of this ebook from David C. Cook and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Awesome and Imaginative By Stephen B. Kagan A Slice of MadnessThe more I read the more I became convinced that there are seeds of greatness in Roland's writing. His imagery is lush and at times exquisite, his stories playful and imaginative. At times I couldn't stop reading for I was so deeply wrapped in the enchantment of an engaging story or admiring his beautifully poetic prose. The stories in this collection were diverse and often written with different voices, always leaving me hungry for more. They play a fine balance of dramatic events and the inner life of the characters and many of the tales beg to be read aloud by a fire in the hearth, surrounded by the hush voice of night. The only sad thing was that there weren't more stories to read and that some were begging to be developed into larger pieces with extended plots. Roland has assured me that he is working on this. This guy has loads of talent and I am seriously looking forward to reading his longer creative works in the future. Roland is an author to follow as he stretches and strengthens his literary muscles and weaves his imagination into grander tapestries. Here are some of the stories in this collection:A man becomes enchanted by a nymph in the woods.Driven by a singular urge, a brilliant young man finally creates a time machine.Exploring the frontiers of our galaxy a man encounters and follows a mysterious woman. An amusing tale of an alien wolf species that has a most strange encounter. In a connected future, a prisoner reflects on his downfall into darkness.A gladiator on an alien world fights for more than his life.Hiding from his past a man must come to terms with the demons.*I wish I could say more but you really need to read these stories for yourself!

Interstellar Cinderella, by Deborah Underwood

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—In this galactic retelling of the beloved children's story, Cinderella has a knack for repair. With the help of her sidekick, a robotic mouse named Murgatroyd, she tinkers with her stepmother's household appliances, but dreams of repairing spaceships. When an invitation to the Prince's Royal Space Parade arrives, the evil stepmother and her daughters leave Cinderella stranded, zooming into space with her toolbox. With the help of her fairy godrobot, Cinderella fixes a broken rocket and then dons a bejeweled atomic blue space suit, to race across the "starry sky" and join the crowds at the parade. When the royal ship has engine trouble, Interstellar Cinderella comes to the rescue. The grateful prince whisks her away to the Gravity Free Ball. At midnight, Cinderella has to run away, but the couple is reunited when the prince searches the cosmos for her. In a modern twist, Cinderella rejects his marriage proposal, but agrees to become his chief mechanic. The rhyming text is accompanied by somewhat jumbled illustrations painted in shadowy browns, greens, and blues. Cinderella resembles a Disney princess with her wide eyes, red hair and determined expression. The appropriately themed endpapers showcase an array of her space-age tools and gadgets. VERDICT An interesting take on a classic fairy tale.—Linda L. Walkins, Saint Joseph Preparatory High School, Boston, MA

Review "Underwood gives thisCinderella welcome agency and independence."--Publishers Weekly, starred review"A brilliant twist to the classic fairy tale that enables young readers to meet a brave heroine who can creatively solve problems, work with tools, and be herself."--Geek Dad"A familiar folktale, but this time with a new, feminist, STEM-celebrating vocabulary and in witty rhyming text.'--Lilith Magazine"A futuristic version of the Cinderella story starring a determined and independent-minded protagonist. Highly recommended."--A Mighty Girl"An interesting take on a classic fairy tale."-School Library Journal"Does Cinderella really need another re-telling? Heck yes!"--Design Mom"It's the perfect antidote to fantasies of princely rescue."--Chicago Tribune"This retelling focuses on what Cinderella can do, not what she can wear."--Horn Book Magazine

And I mean LOVES. I've had to read it to her every night for the past 8 days since I got it (except last night when I begged her to read something else with the promise of reading it again tonight). This never happened before. I thought she might miss the pretty dresses and the balls, but she is a huge fan of the aliens and all the spaceships, and has a new question about it every time (What is SOS? Why people have a bubble around their head? What is gravity? Why this alien doesn't have a nose?). Kudos to the author and the artist!

(Chronicle Books). “Once upon a planetoid, amid her tools and sprockets, a girl named Cinderella dreamed of fixing fancy rockets.” This is Cinderella as you’ve never seen her! She lives with her stepmother and stepsisters, but dreams of fixing space ships. When the Prince invites the family to his Royal Space Parade, Cinderella is left behind. But her robot mouse alerts her fairy godrobot, and off she goes to the Parade. But Cinderella doesn’t dance, she fixes the Prince’s broken spaceship. Instead of a glass slipper, the Prince searches for the owner of the sonic socket wrench Cinderella left behind. The modernized ending surprises and amuses! The cartoonish art is a fun match to the charming rhymes. Don’t miss the end papers filled with high-tech space tools, such as the antimatter hammer. Connie Goldsmith, children's book reviewer for California Kids, a Sacramento regional parenting publication

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Cinderella Fixing Robots in Space? Aw yeah! By Angie Manfredi What's not to love about a book where Cinderella decides that she isn't ready to marry the Prince because she wants to fix his robots instead? Perfect for storytimes about robots, princesses, space and perfect for classrooms doing re-told fairy tale units - Deborah Underwood's INTERSTELLAR CINDERELLA gives you a heroine to root for as she takes her tools in hands and fixes ships to change her destiny. This is an amazing picture book - did I mention illustrator Meg Hunt has made the prince a character of color - that every library should have. Give it to your princesses who love to tinker and your space pirates who love a good twist on a tale. You won't be disappointed.

By Naas Of all the books I have purchased from Kindle this must be the first one that does not have a "Table of Contents".Being a study Bible you should be able to move between books of the Bible but in this case it is impossible.I suggest Amazon fix the problem or remove it from their product list as in its current format it is totally unusable.

This novel wraps around Ofer Angel in tendrils that lead from the Prologue onward, from his very youth in Tel Aviv to his final revelations and realizations.Despite a lifetime of trouble, Ofer somehow graduates Law School and lands a plum position as an Intern at a prestigious law firm. His task is simple, baby sit a witness in a hotel room. That straight forward job involves someone Ofer never expected to see again…. And ends in a way he never imagined. Now, with his witness dead and unknown forces at work, Ofer has 1 week to live – 1 week to find a cure to his plague and 1 week to answer the mystery surrounding his life.Action packed and arching, this novel answers all questions and leaves you satisfied with the outcome, and outcome that you won’t see coming.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Edge of your seat By Nicole MommaKauk The mystery plot twists as often as you turn the page, this kept me up way later than I ever should be awake with a toddler up at 5am. Ofer Angel was ALWAYS in trouble, but he manages to graduate from law school (how, no one really knows) and gets a job with an insanely good law firm -- he's gotta have a lucky rabbits foot or a four leaf clover! His first assignment ends up with a dead witness and very limited time to find an antidote before he too, is dead.Like I said, this book moves FAST with the unlikely suicide of his father, the death of his star witness, and his own impending doom. I was very happy with the ending -- unlike in some where I want to yell at the author for not resolving huge issues, or leaving me on a massive cliff hanger -- but it was so totally unexpected, well, you'll see when you read the book!!!DO NOT start this book really late at night, when you have to wake up early.... you might find you do not sleep at all!!!I received a copy of this ebook in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not compensated, nor will I ever guarantee a positive review.

By theresa dawn sinclair I cannot over-emphasise the beauty of this follow up....with well drawn characters you will love or hate appropriately, with romance of the third kind(and fourth kind!) with a plot that rocks and every loose end tied up neatly. You will laugh aloud at times. You will love the new characters and love even more the old ones. This is terrific writing from an author who just gets better and better with each book.Worth every penny, whatever it costs, trust me.

Unputdownable By rod baker Wow, what a plot, very imaginitive, but with recognisable themes to make it believable & equippd with fenough folksy dialogue to pull the plot along at a brisk pace. Loved the title, the cover and the story, unputdownable, read until 2 in the morning. Cant wait for the next one!

By LBbooklover Another page-turning cracker of a read, and a worthy followup to ALIEN AFFAIRS. I love how Scott Skipper has has further developed his Carrie Player character and introduced some ones to help navigate the twists and turns. Terrific job again Mr. Skipper!

Eight years have passed since the first edition of Evidence Explained, the definitive guide to the citation and analysis of historical sources--a guide so thorough that it leaves nothing to chance. Yet advances in genealogy and history research, changes at major repositories and online information providers, and the ever-evolving electronic world have generated new citation and analysis challenges for researchers. While countless websites now suggest ways to identify their offerings, few of those address the analytical needs of a researcher concerned with the nature and provenance of web material, whose numerous incarnations and transformations often affect the reliability of their content.Like the previous editions of Evidence Explained, the third edition explains citation principles for both traditional and nontraditional sources; includes more than 1,000 citation models for virtually every source type; and shows readers where to go to find their sources and how to describe and evaluate them. It contains many new citation models, updates to websites, and descriptions and evaluations of numerous contemporary materials not included in earlier editions.Highlights of the third edition include:

  • QuickStart Guide
  • Expanded 3x3 Evidence Analysis Process Model
  • Expanded coverage for genetic citations
  • Expanded coverage of layered citations
Plus
  • Latest concepts in evidence analysis
  • Coverage of latest media and delivery systems
  • Expanded glossary
  • Handling of cached materials at Wayback Machine and elsewhere
  • Privacy standards for genetic research
  • Updates in National Archives citations after changes at NARA and TNG
  • Updates for major online providers after acquisitions and mergers
  • When to cite DOIs vs. URLs
  • When to cite Stable URLs vs. paths and keywords
  • Your 4 Basic Rules for citing websites
  • & many other issues raised by users of past editions

Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace, Third Edition, by Elizabeth Shown Mills

Review "The definitive guide for how to cite every conceivable kind of source a historian might use, from traditional archival materials to digital media to the most arcane sources imaginable." --John B. Boles, William P. Hobby Professor of History, Rice University"Twenty-first century technology confronts historians and students with a bewildering proliferation of information some of it accurate and too much of it dubious. In Evidence Explained, Mills demonstrates how to separate the wheat from the chaff and how to report one's sources and achievements. This encyclopedic guidebook is an invaluable resource for historians, students and editors alike." --Jon Kukla, author of Mr. Jefferson's Women and A Wilderness So Immense: The Louisiana Purchase and the Destiny of America"Historians will welcome the publication of this detailed guide to citations. Even avid users of The Chicago Manual of Style regularly encounter sources for which that handbook gives no guidance. Now we can turn to Elizabeth Shown Mills's comprehensive work."--Journal of Southern History"A key resource guide for scholars and serious researchers who must rely upon and understand historical evidence. Highly recommended."--R.V. Labaree, Choice"This is an essential resource for family historians; highly recommended for all libraries."--Library Journal (First edition: Library Journal Best Reference 2007)"In standardizing a family history style, Mills has advanced the discipline. She has given researchers, writers, editors, and publishers invaluable new tools to bring quality and consistency to their work and distinction to the field."--National Genealogical Society Quarterly"Meant not only as a style guide for the types of source citations used by historians and genealogists, this book also discusses why analysis of information within the total context of a source is imperative to understanding the nature of a fact. Citations not only tell where the source was found, but also can indicate a level of confidence to knowledgeable researchers." --Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly

About the Author Elizabeth Shown Mills is an award-winning historical writer with decades of research experience in public and private records of many Western nations. Published widely by academic and popular presses, Mills edited a national scholarly journal for 16 years, taught for 13 years at a National Archives-based institute on archival records and, for 25 years, headed a university-based program in advanced research methodology. Mills knows records, loves records, and regularly shares her expertise in them with audiences across three continents.

Must-have reference--unless you already own the previous edition By CrankyToday I just bought the Third Edition of "Evidence Explained" by Elizabeth Shown Mills. Of course, this book is the holy grail on genealogical citation writing. I'm comparing it with my copy of Second Edition Revised (which, by the way, is NOT the same as the Second Edition). The Third Edition has added three pages in the front as a sorely needed "quick start". The glossary and index appear to be larger. The main body of the book is exactly the same number of pages, although it appears that some point-wise revisions have been made. My recommendation to any serious genealogist is that you MUST buy this book--unless you already have a Second Edition Revised. If you already have Second Edition Revised, there's probably not enough additional value to justify the cost.

Lots of rules, citation models and discussion, but not a how-to book By Aphotog Although the book is stepwise, methodical and thorough in its definition and discussion of rules, I found it near impossible to use for self-learning this style of historical citation. It is not a how-to book. What is needed is an accompanying book with examples that show how to analyze a source in order to find the most appropriate model or models out of the hundreds of citation models provided. The book does well on discussion of the details of each citation model, but assumes that the table of contents, chapter sub-headings and text are sufficient to lead the user to the correct model. But they aren’t. One can find three or four different models in very different sections of the book and then be at a loss as to which, if any, should be used. What is missing are at least a few dozen diverse examples that show, top down, how to analyze a source to identify its most pertinent qualities, and then how to use that information to find the most appropriate citation model, with some confidence that the choice is correct. By the way, I have a master’s degree in library science, and while in library school I spent a semester immersed in a (required) course in cataloging with a similar tome called AACR2. However, AACR2 was the book of rules, not the text from which we learned how to use it.

The facts include stuff about Science, Animals, Human Body, History, Space, Music, Culture and The Earth. Each fact is numbered and many contain a picture as well. It can be overwhelming to look at it all at once but my kids like to look at it a page here and there. It is so cute to listen to my kids randomly spit out facts. The facts are interesting no matter what your child is interested in, I actually keep them book in our family room and browse it myself almost daily. I am encouraging my kids to look at the book daily and read at least one fact.I received this book to review in exchange for sharing my honest opinion.

I used it with my first venture into making cold process soap four years ago, and still refer to it often. She writes in a way that makes it so easy to understand the process. I often refer to the chapter about soapmaking oils, in which she describes the unique qualities each oil can add to your soap. I highly recommend this book for beginners, as well as those more experienced!!

3 SIMPLE WOODWORKING PROJECTS: In the Workshop with Henry, by Henry E. Prante

About the Author I was a cabinet maker by trade and switched to boat building/repair once I arrived in Canada from Germany in 1952. I spent over 30 years hunting, fishing and camping whenever the opportunity arose. In particular, I loved the great Northwest of BC and the Yukon and have written 2 previously published books over the years along with many short stories and How-To Do It Yourself articles via the traditional publishing route. Over the past 3 years my books are being digitized and re-published on Amazon. There are many more to come. My daughter is also looking into getting some of my books converted for Audible as well once she finds a narrator. I belonged to and contributed to many organizations including: The BC Wildlife Federation and the Port Coquitlam & District Hunting & Fishing Club. I was a Past President. I also worked on committees to save the severely endangered Coquitlam River… that story will follow in another book. I taught C.O.R.E Hunter Training as well. In addition to all this, I owned Prante Boatworks and raised a good family with my loving wife, Brigitte. We have 2 sons: Raymond and Wayne and our 2 daughters: Marilyn, and Hella. I hope you enjoy them . ~Henry

In Volume I, Tomásito reveals the time -tested conga method which he himself studied with “Changuito” and other master congueros at the ENA conservatory in Havana. Volume I starts at the absolute beginning and is designed for the person who has never touched the congas, but is also of great value to the advanced player who wishes to understand the foundation and rudiments of the approach that has allowed the ENA and the other Havana conservatories to consistently turn out so many world class congueros each year. Volume I begins with simple exercises to develop technique and systematically works its way through rudiments and “recursos” for use in solos and fills and basic rhythm patterns such as Salsa, Cha-Cha and Bolero. These are presented using the unique Step by Step Video Method, which enables he student to learn the patterns by watching the video and imitating Tomásito as he builds the patterns stroke by stroke. This, combined with a special type of notation designed to be simple for those who don’t read music, results in a conga course that really works, rather than just another reference book to add to the bookshelf! “Borges’s composed, carefully wrought, gnarled style is at once the means of his art and its object—his way of ordering and giving meaning to the bizarre and terrifying world he creates: it is a brilliant, burnished instrument, and it is quite adequate to the extreme demands his baroque imagination makes of it . . . . Absolutely and most vividly original.”—Saturday ReviewThe seventeen pieces in Ficciones demonstrate the gargantuan powers of imagination, intelligence, and style of one of the greatest writers of this or any other century. Borges sends us on a journey into a compelling, bizarre, and profoundly resonant realm; we enter the fearful sphere of Pascal’s abyss, the surreal and literal labyrinth of books, and the iconography of eternal return. More playful and approachable than the fictions themselves are Borges’s Prologues, brief elucidations that offer the uninitiated a passageway into the whirlwind of Borges’s genius and mirror the precision and potency of his intellect and inventiveness, his piercing irony, his skepticism, and his obsession with fantasy. To enter the worlds in Ficciones is to enter the mind of Jorge Luis Borges, wherein lies Heaven, Hell, and everything in between.

Ficciones, by Jorge Luis Borges

Amazon.com Review Reading Jorge Luis Borges is an experience akin to having the top of one's head removed for repairs. First comes the unfamiliar breeze tickling your cerebral cortex; then disorientation, even mild discomfort; and finally, the sense that the world has been irrevocably altered--and in this case, rendered infinitely more complex. First published in 1945, his Ficciones compressed several centuries' worth of philosophy and poetry into 17 tiny, unclassifiable pieces of prose. He offered up diabolical tigers, imaginary encyclopedias, ontological detective stories, and scholarly commentaries on nonexistent books, and in the process exploded all previous notions of genre. Would any of David Foster Wallace's famous footnotes be possible without Borges? Or, for that matter, the syntactical games of Perec, the metafictional pastiche of Calvino? For good or for ill, the blind Argentinian paved the way for a generation's worth of postmodern monkey business--and fiction will never be simply "fiction" again.

Its enormous influence on writers aside, Ficciones has also--perhaps more importantly--changed the way that we read. Borges's Pierre Menard, for instance, undertakes the most audacious project imaginable: to create not a contemporary version of Cervantes's most famous work but the Quixote itself, word for word. This second text is "verbally identical" to the original, yet, because of its new associations, "infinitely richer"; every time we read, he suggests, we are in effect creating an entirely new text, simply by viewing it through the distorting lens of history. "A book is not an isolated being: it is a relationship, an axis of innumerable relationships," Borges once wrote in an essay about George Bernard Shaw. "All men who repeat one line of Shakespeare are William Shakespeare," he tells us in "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius." In this spirit, Borges is not above impersonating, even quoting, himself.

It is hard, exactly, to say what all of this means, at least in any of the usual ways. Borges wrote not with an ideological agenda, but with a kind of radical philosophical playfulness. Labyrinths, libraries, lotteries, doubles, dreams, mirrors, heresiarchs: these are the tokens with which he plays his ontological games. In the end, ideas themselves are less important to him than their aesthetic and imaginative possibilities. Like the idealist philosophers of Tlön, Borges does not "seek for the truth or even for verisimilitude, but rather for the astounding"; for him as for them, "metaphysics is a branch of fantastic literature." --Mary Park

Review “Without Borges the modern Latin American novel simply would not exist.” –Carlos Fuentes“In resounding the note of the marvelous last struck in English by Wells and Chesterson, in permitting infinity to enter and distort his imagination, [Borges] has lifted fiction away from the flat earth where most of our novels and short stories still take place.” –John Updike“These brief Ficciones have to be read one at a time, and slowly; then they throb with uncanny and haunting power” –The Atlantic Monthly“Borges is the most important Spanish-language writer since Cervantes.” –Mario Vargas Llosa“[Borges] engages the heart as well as the intelligence; his genius strikes, undismayed as Theseus, through the labyrinths of our life and time to the accomplishment of new, inspiring and stunningly beautiful work.” –John Barth“One of the finest, subtlest, and least appreciated of comedians…[Borges is] a central fact of Western culture.” –The Washington Post Book World“Borges’s composed, carefully wrought, gnarled style is at once the means of his art and its object—his way of ordering and giving meaning to the bizarre and terrifying world he creates: it is a brilliant, burnished instrument, and it is quite adequate to the extreme demands his baroque imagination makes of it . . . . Absolutely and most vividly original.”—Saturday Review

A sly milestone of 20th century literature By Christopher Culver While only a slim volume of about 100 pages, Jorge Luis Borges' FICCIONES is one of the 20th century's most original and influential works. A set of two collections of short stories, ''The Garden of Forking Paths" and ''Artifices", FICCIONES was the world's first exposure to the Argentinian writer and Borges' all-around best work. The nature of the stories which Borges crafted is so unique and subtle that it defies description. He portrayed unusual occurrences, and peppered his stories, narrated in a faux-scholastic style, with references to colourful sources that, while sounding plausible, are of Borges' own invention and can be found in no library. In the first story of FICCIONES, ''Tlon, Uqbar, Orbius Tertius," he imagines an encyclopedia mysteriously containing a entry for a country that is not to be found - at least not in our reality. ''The Approach to Al-Mutasim" is a review of a book which doesn't exist; here, in a reversal of the usual order, the review brings the book into being. ''The Babylon Lottery" and ''The Library of Babel" are both clever metaphors for the human world. In the first, Borges describes an ancient society which lets all things be decided by chance. In the second, which introduced the concept of the infinite library, the story's setting is an unimaginably vast archive whose librarians from birth to death care for books whose meanings cannot be deciphered.Jorge Luis Borges often used several key motifs in his books, such as mirrors and labyrinths, and it is this reuse of symbols which has created the ''Borgesian" genre. These symbols and the offbeat constructions which Borges almost singlehandedly invented went on to inspire legions of writers, including Gene Wolfe and Salman Rushdie. The translation of FICCIONES has long been a divisive issue. While some, such as myself, believe that this versions of FICCIONES follows the original Spanish closely and, in any event, Borges' genius is found not as much in his language as in his concepts, others detest this 1962 version. Andrew Hurley has recently translated all of Borges fictional stories, including FICCIONES, in COLLECTED FICTIONS published by Penguin, but even his translation has sparked new battles. Should one wish to read FICCIONES in English, however, I'd suggest getting this translation. It is less expensive than COLLECTED FICTIONS and contains only Borges' finest work. For those who can read Spanish decently, I'd recommend even obtaining the original language, as Borges' stories do not use vocabulary much outside what one gets after four-years of high school Spanish. While some readers may not "get" Borges (he can be compared to H.P. Lovecraft in possessing great influence on some but total obscurity to others), I'd certainly recommend trying FICCIONES.

Metaphysical Angst By Jason Baer After years of running into this name, "Borges," I felt as though I were falling short of my expectations as a reader to ignore this man and his colossal reputation. Ficciones seemed to be his most widely read and critically acclaimed book, and so I inevitably found myself reading it.To try to capture the essence of Borges in a handful of words is like trying to capture the Lochness Monster on film: impossible, but frequently attempted. With that understanding in mind, here's my assessment:All of Borges's stories are very different, and yet they all share a common sensibility, one of understated but very deeply felt anguish. This is not the anguish of an ordinary writer feeling sorry for himself and his fate. This anguish is deep, metaphysical. You get the sense that Borges views life and his fellow human beings at a distance, and yet is able to see more and understand more from this distance. He does not attempt to explain; he simply wants to impart his sense of awe, wonder, and inevitability. The subject matter varies widely: an infinite library, a scholarly review of the life's work of a fictional writer, a boy with a perfect memory. Some of his stories are Kafka-esqe in a nightmarish sense, while others have the intellectual playfulness of an M.C. Escher drawing: what you thought was 'up' is really 'down,' and yet once you see the big picture you realize that this is the only way it can be. The endings are as inevitable as death, and yet you rarely see them coming.I'm not so sure that Borges wrote his stories with a specific point or message, although many of them seem to have one. I believe that most of these stories are simply meant to inspire thought and contemplation of the very issues that Borges had been thinking of when he wrote them. One could do a lot worse than to see things through the eyes of this great thinker. My only complaint is that his stories are not as accessible as they could be, and his scholarly manner may be problematical for some. But the most effective pills are often the hardest to swallow...

By Maximiliano F Yofre Jorge Luis Borges (1899 - 1986) was one of the greatest Argentinean's writers of all times. Since 1970 he was candidate to Nobel Literature Prize, which he never attained. In 1980 he was bestowed Cervantes Prize, the Spanish major literary award. He influenced two generations of Latin American writers. Even those who despised him as "elitist writer" admired his powerful imagination and writing skills.Jorge Luis was born in a high-class family. He was bilingual, due to his English grandmother. He moved with his parents to Europe where he resided from 1914 till 1921. When he returned to Argentina he fells in love with Buenos Aires. This love affaire begot several poetry volumes and inspired him many stories.Borges was an omnivorous reader with a wide range of interests: from Cabbala thru Golems; from Mythology thru Gaucho's hardships; from Immortality thru Infinite; from Buddhism thru Christianity. His tales reflect this interest. The present volume encompasses two of his earlier stories collections: "The Garden of Forking Paths" (1941) and "Fictions" (1944) and constitute a fair sample of his writings and style."The Babylon Lottery" describes an improbable world, ruled by fate embodied in a lottery game. "Funes the Memorious" elaborates on what happens if a person may recall every instant of his whole life. "The Garden of Forking Paths" is an elegant spy's story, mixed with subtle laberynths. "The Library of Babel", is one of Borge's best known texts, where he speculate on an infinite library containing every volume of human literature and gave way to mathematical speculation. In other tales the reader will get in touch with some themes very dear to Borges: mirrors, treason, solitary Hero, multiple divergent versions of the same character, whole universe created ex nihlo from his imagination and more much more.If you like fantasy you probably will fall in love with this book and search for more Borge's works. If you don't like fantasy you may be hooked by a prose rich in images and a powerful literary and philosophical imagination.Give this book a chance, you will no be disappointed!Reviewed by Max Yofre.

Museums 101, by Mark Walhimer

Review Walhimer, founder of Museum Planning LLC and host of the blog Museum Planner, has assembled a fine how-to guide for creating and organizing all varieties of museums. The author guides readers through the process, covering the initial vision, formation of a board of directors, the museum feasibility study, the building's design and layout, and successful exhibition planning. The work includes sections on fundraising, marketing, and programming but keeps its focus on the essentials: the museum's mission, its responsibility to visitors, and the ethics of proper stewardship of collections. Walhimer frequently illustrates the point he is making with one or two tangible examples of successfully applied techniques, as well as offering cautionary tales. The book's five sections are particularly logical and well organized. The ‘Museum Toolbox’ section provides a comprehensive collection of seminal resources, sample documents, and useful templates. Each chapter includes a list of references, mostly of resources available online. An accompanying website with updated information and a blog is also available to readers wanting more. Rather than a reference work per se, this book is more suitable for circulating collections, and it will appeal for museum-studies students and anyone considering a career in the field. Summing Up: Recommended. Undergraduates; general readers; professionals/practitioners. (CHOICE)Museums 101 is a straight forward ‘how-to’ book for people new to the field of museums and for those interested in entering professions in the museum field. A perfect book to hand to a new volunteer, new staff or board member and say ‘here are the basics. (Van A. Museum's 101 gave us both. It is divided into small, easy to read chunks of valuable information. Being written by an author on the other side of the world we wondered if it would have enough relevance to us, but our Custodian has been a subscriber to Mark's blog for some years now and found it valuable, so we gave it a go. We find it practical, very readable and very useful. We now recommend this book to our colleagues, and would also highly recommend it to anyone interested in the Museum sector.
