The failure of economists to anticipate the global financial crisis and mitigate the impact of the ensuing recession has spurred a public outcry. Economists are under fire, but questions concerning exactly how to redeem the discipline remain unanswered. In this provocative book, renowned economist Meghnad Desai investigates the evolution of economics and maps its trajectory against the occurrence of major political events to provide a definitive answer.   Desai underscores the contribution of hubris to economists’ calamitous lack of foresight, and he makes a persuasive case for the profession to re-engage with the history of economic thought. He dismisses the notion that one over-arching paradigm can resolve all economic eventualities while urging that an array of already-available theories and approaches be considered anew for the insights they may provide toward preventing future economic catastrophes. With an accessible style and keen common sense, Desai offers a fresh perspective on some of the most important economic issues of our time.

Not quite enough questions By Breakingviews The response of the dismal scientists to their collective failure to anticipate the global financial crisis has been dispiriting. Economists have refused to set aside their abstruse models, even though these models failed to predict the economic catastrophe. During the boom years, almost all economists applauded Alan Greenspan’s easy money policy. After the bust, the same people continue to deny – in the face of common sense - that the low interest rates of Greenspan’s Federal Reserve were largely responsible for the debt bubble. In short, economics has failed to address its intellectual weaknesses. In “Hubris: Why Economists Failed to Predict the Crisis and How to Avoid the Next One,” Meghnad Desai, a retired professor at the London School of Economics, relishes exposing the flaws of his field. Unfortunately Desai’s attempt to point the way forward is vitiated by his own weaknesses as an economist.Back in the 18th century Adam Smith established economics, according to Desai, as a “combination of philosophy, history, economic theory and some practical policy advice.” Yet modern economists, while adept at mathematics, lack Smith’s intellectual breadth. In particular, they are largely ignorant about economic history and know even less about the intellectual development of their own discipline. As a result, economists fail to learn the lessons of history. Here’s an example. In the 1920s the Austrian economist Friedrich Hayek criticised an interest-rate policy that was focused exclusively on maintaining price stability – a policy stance recommended at the time by leading economists, including John Maynard Keynes and Irving Fisher. Hayek suggested that, under certain circumstances, such a policy could result in rates being set too low, fostering a credit boom, which would inevitably burst. The Great Crash of 1929 supported Hayek’s view.A little more than a half-century later, central bankers made exactly the same mistake, concentrating on price stability and ignoring the rapid growth of credit. Had economists been aware of Hayek’s analysis, they might have been less sanguine during the balmy years of the so-called Great Moderation.Desai suggests that many of the flaws of economics derive from the attempt to turn the subject into a science; a development he traces back to the father of classical economics, David Ricardo, who theorised that the economy tends naturally towards equilibrium. Such a balanced state can be modelled mathematically with ease, allowing economists to satisfy their “physics envy.” As Desai points out, modern economists are wedded to mathematical models, despite the models’ reliance on highly unrealistic assumptions about the real world. While Ricardo was postulating equilibrium in the early 19th century, other commentators noticed a regular ebb and flow to economic life, including occasional but recurring financial crises. Yet the economics profession has tended to ignore the credit cycle, instead ascribing all oscillations in economic activity to random, or in economist-speak “exogenous,” shocks. According to this view, economic catastrophes such as the Great Depression and Japan’s lost decade only came about due to policy mistakes by central bankers.Certain economists noticed that production rises and falls with some regularity. Desai provides a brief introduction to various theories of the economic cycle, including that of Karl Marx. The author of “Das Kapital” was so persuaded of the fragility of capitalism in the 1850s that he feared the economic system would implode before he had completed his magnum opus.Marx’s cycle, according to Desai, resulted from the competition between workers and capital for the economic surplus. This has some contemporary resonance since in the years prior to the financial crisis, the profit share of GDP in the United States was extremely elevated and household consumption was buoyed by credit rather than wage growth. When capital vanquishes labour, in Marx’s analysis, a crisis beckons.Yet for all his bluster about the inevitable collapse of capitalism, Marx’s approach shares a common fault with mainstream economics. They all overlook the key role played by credit in driving economic activity. Economists often describe money as a “veil” which must be lifted to observe what really matters, the workings of the “real” economy.Yet, as the events of 2008 revealed, the real economy can turn out to be something of an illusion. Homebuilding and consumer spending depend on mortgages; imports and exports require trade finance; the government’s ability to sustain economic activity is determined by access to the capital markets. When the failure of Lehman Brothers broke Wall Street’s credit machine, the global economy ground to a halt. While “Hubris” provides a readable account of the various failings of economics, Desai’s understanding of modern finance is not quite up to the job. For instance, his definition of a derivative – which he describes as a financial instrument “based on equities” – is inaccurate and his description of so-called “shadow banking” is confused.Desai’s attempt to direct the attention of economists back to the economic cycle is welcome. Yet he espouses the nebulous cycle theory of the Soviet economist Nikolai Kondratieff which is derived from a confection of miscellaneous factors.Desai stresses the importance of money and credit, opposes the notion of equilibrium and champions unorthodox economists. Yet not once does he mention the contributions of the late U.S. economist Hyman Minsky, who saw economics as a study of dynamic disequilibrium, placed finance at the centre of his analysis, and developed a coherent cycle theory of boom and bust. The Lehman bust has been justly described as a “Minsky moment.” Desai’s oversight of Minsky leaves a gaping hole in an otherwise admirable book.Minsky was unpopular among his fellow economists for two reasons. First, his analysis was difficult to model mathematically. Second, his views were unorthodox. By the turn of this century the economics profession had become extremely intolerant of dissent – intellectual heresy wasn’t persecuted, it was simply ignored. If economics is to regain its status as a serious intellectual discipline, economists must be prepared to relinquish their mathematical models and rekindle the intellectual breadth that the subject has lost since Adam Smith’s day. Since the Lehman bust, they have made distressingly little progress.- Edward Chancellor

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Not stunning, not bad. By Autamme_dot_com Have economists been collectively asleep at the wheel and failed to see the wood for the trees, allowing society to walk into a sudden global financial crisis and recession? Or is this excusable. Is there the potential to forecast the next “big one” and try and mitigate its effects? This book tried to argue a partial disconnection, suggesting that economists need to reengage with the history of economic thought and be receptive to insights that might give clues towards a future meltdown, yet at the same time it feels that some feather cushions are being laid out to soothe criticism. One problem is that the book just doesn’t get out of second gear. It gives the impression as if it pootles along, juddering from side to side, yet failing to zoom along to “Pointsville” when it gets the chance. At times it feels as if a punch is thrown, such as the author noting that the last big economic meltdown was not a problem with the economy per se, but with economics and economists who will not admit that they were wrong. Can all the criticism be justified without it appearing one-sided, granting far too much power to the few? Determining this is beyond this reviewer’s pay grade, yet it didn’t feel entirely right.Yet it was an interesting read, giving various points and counterpoints. It did not feel revolutionary. Maybe it was the culinary equivalent of a fast food restaurant: there was nothing wrong with the food as it filled a gap, but it didn’t win you over either. It wasn’t an expensive meal, nor a gourmet delight, yet it was food for the mind…Several opinions are always better than one, after all.

Karl Llewellyn, a legal realist whose views on jurisprudence were influential and sometimes controversial, was also one of the leading teachers of fundamental legal thought. He took seriously the functions of courts, the use of precedent, and the power of rules. In this important book, he laid bare these jurisprudential tools, in support of appellate court thinking at all levels in the legal system. Legal analysis is so clearly picked apart that this work has served as a tool-kit for judicial thinking — and persuasive argument to courts — since it was first published in 1960. And his invaluable appendices show in detail how arguments and judicial expressions can be turned around to the advocate's advantage. This book is the culmination of a lifetime of analysis of legal thought from one of the legal system’s most important legends. The new reprint edition from Quid Pro Books adds a 2015 Foreword by Tulane law professor Steven Alan Childress. It embeds the original pagination, to promote continuity of referencing and citation of this foundational work. A compelling addition to the Legal Legends Series from Quid Pro Books.

I became familiar with "The Common Law Tradition" in law school through my law school dean/professor, Soia Mentschikoff (Llewellyn's widow, if you somehow don't know of her) and the techniques described on how to analyze appellate courts was one of the most interesting and useful things I learned in law school. I prized that book, and I made the mistake of lending the book to another lawyer who did crimnal appellate work, and they never returned that copy. So having a copy again via the Kindle Edition, all these years later is a godsend. It is still a masterful and relevant work for all practicing lawyers, or for anyone who truly wants to understand how the common law tradition works in an appellate court setting.

A highly visual guide to identifying birds in the field based on the important, unchanging features of size, shape, structure, and behavior Birding is an extremely rewarding and fun hobby, but some situations can be frustrating or unsuccessful because of a variety of challenging viewing conditions. This guide to identifying birds offers the holistic “birding by impression” method, which not only helps with these difficult conditions, but also develops an efficient mental identification process using left- and right-brain skills. It begins with a conscious assessment of a bird’s unchanging physical characteristics, including general size, body shape, structural features (bill, legs, neck, and wings), and behavior. Using this approach, birders can quickly assess all birds and distinguish new and uncommon species from familiar ones. They can then examine more detailed field marks to fine-tune the identification. Rather than a traditional field guide, this book presents an interactive how-to approach to a more complete identification process.

From the Back Cover Peterson Reference Guide to Birding by ImpressionA Different Approach to Knowing and Identifying Birds     Want to bird like the experts? Birding by Impression shares an exciting approach to bird identification that encourages the use of both right- and left-brain skills to form a complete ID picture. By combining a careful assessment of a bird’s unchangeable features with the traditional method of looking at plumage details, readers are better equipped to tackle the difficult task of separating similar birds. Information about groups of birds, with representative images, as well as comparative photos of similar species, provide additional support.   With more than 200 photographs, this highly visual book shows birds in actual field conditions (such as compromised lighting), and provides quiz photos that allow readers to test their own ID conclusions.     PETERSON REFERENCE GUIDES offer authoritative, comprehensive information, including detailed text, maps, and superior illustrations. I thought this book would open new birding idenification horizons for me.As I worked through the chapters, as an advanced birder wanting to improve my bird identification skill , I became frustrated as the photographs were not adequate to illustrate the talking points of the text. This is a very ambitious book as the authors want to cover every family of birds in the text and with photographs. As a result, difficult to identify birds only get 2 or 4 photographs at the most, while easy to identify bird families get almost the same treatment. But what is even more frustrating with the already limited use of photographs, the authors often choose not to use a baseline bird "shape" of the species, but an odd or extreme individual that does not illustrate their talking points. As a result, it is difficult to learn from this book compared to other birding guides and I do not see using this book as a future identification resource due to the limited photographs used. There are other much better books such as the Shorebird Guide, The Warbler Guide or the Peterson Seabid guide which include more photographs and better "birding by impression" combining both text and photographs to explain talking points..Examples of the sections in the book which are very frustrating in content include the pelagic birding sections where the authors explain how to tell an albatross from a shearwater from a storm petrel - but for anyone on a pelagic trip - this should be obvious. Or the section on terns where all but two of the pictures are of sitting birds not flying birds when the main challenge is identifying flying terns. Or the chapter on skuas where two species of skuas were discussed - if you are lucky enough to be looking at a skua - you are likely on a boat with several expert birders which can tell you the difference between the two species - couldn't these pages be used on providing more photographs of the birds we see more commonly to illustrate the authors birding by impression talking points? Or the section on dowitches where the author used a picture of an emancipated long-billed dowitcher to compare with a short-billed dowitcher but the picture used is is not reflective of the fatter "swallowed a grapefruit" shape of the long-billed dowitcher compared to a short-billed. Too many sections are like this. While the title of the book is birding by impression, in some sections of the book there was more discussion on plumage than bird shape, and I found this further watered down the birding by impression content.I found this book very frustrating as the author's knowledge in writing the book is evident in the text - but the photographs used did not back up the text - and for better bird identification, clear multiple photographs illustrating the texts talking points are critical.

By Alison In their new Peterson Reference Guide, Kevin Karlson and Dale Rosselet argue convincingly that that “right-brain” process of recognition can be taught, learned, and refined. Observers who can intentionally combine this process with the verbal—“left-brain”—tools of traditional identification will be better birders, using both conventional field marks and “a more expanded assessment of a bird’s shape, structural features, and motion” in the effort not just to name but to know, to recognize, the bird. As one of the finest bird photographers in the world, and admittedly “’left-brained’ by nature,” Karlson tells the reader that he was at first skeptical of the new approach; but his co-authorship with Michael O’Brien and Richard Crossly of the splendid Shorebird Guide (2006) convinced him, as it has convinced countless readers, of the usefulness of consciously constructing a “database of lasting impressions.” Dale Rosselet came to the same conviction through careful observation of the learning styles of thousands of children and beginning birders; she discovered that introducing the idea of “impression” into her teaching helped every participant in her courses get the most out of the experience.A series of more or less taxonomically ordered case studies is illustrated with both stunning portraits and field-realistic images of distant flocks for study. Families and other larger groups are introduced by a discussion of how to observe and assess the range of sizes, structures, behaviors, and habitats exhibited by the species included. Some particularly challenging or species-rich groups, such as terns and New World warblers, are also treated in tables. Most of the family accounts end with a set of comparisons between similar species. There is a slight tendency here to emphasize problems encountered in the north or the east over those most commonly faced in the west and southwest. But these discussions are meant to be demonstrations of a method, not definitive identification guides, and read as such, they are certain to inspire new birders and experienced birders alike to become better observers.Highly recommended.

The authors, Kevin Karlson (one of the nicest men I have met) and Dale Rosselet (whom I have not met) emphasize how to rnore carefully observe birds in the field, noting their shape and other physical characteristics before getting to plumage distinctions (which is how most birders identify what they are seeing). This is 'birding by impression', which is how we often recognize family and friends before they are close enough to clearly see - shape, structure, height, and gait (or with birds - flight pattern). I am trying to put this in practice in my field work now, and it is slowly beginning to help as I linger with my views longer whenever possible, and 'get to know them' better. Combined with typical field identification, I believe this will help expand my own skills. The writing is excellent and the quizzes throughout are helpful in applying techniques emphasized in the text. Strongly recommended for birders of any level.

I really appreciate the introspective nature of the narrative. I lost my mom recently, and although I didn't read this book for that particular reason (I research topics related to Spanish literature and politics), I found it to be a welcomed source of shared feelings and emotions, as far as my own experiences go.I do think there wasn't really any movement throughout the story. The narrative often feels very stagnant, to the point that it is simply redundant. There also seems to be a theme related to aging, visible particularly through the women in the story. The nostalgic tone is heightened by this obsession with aging.Milena Busquets uses some refreshing combinations in terms of language (again, I ready it in Spanish, so not sure how the translation is), and as I said earlier, the introspection is interesting, though the story doesn't move much at all.If you've experienced a similar loss, I think it's worth taking a look. If you are looking for a highly interesting and intellectually exciting novel, keep looking. This is rather far from that.

Got it for my mom while my grandmother was on her death bed. It seemed to help her in being, somewhat, ready for what was going on. After she read it she handed it to her sister (my aunt), who was also going through a hard time because of the death of their mother (my grandmother).

A frank language in the way she approaches women concerns.....loss, friendship, children, love and lovers., it is everything there, in the secluded seduction of Cadaques, and it's marvelous views.

Curacao is a taut thriller, but is not over dramatized as so many stories are today, it balances humor and drama as real life tends to do. It starts out fast then becomes even faster. The kind of book that you wished your high school English teacher would have assigned for a book report but never did. Curacao introduces the female private investigator Reece Bristol and her, Hollywood movie actor partner Jay Laurel. It starts in Florida and ends on the tropical Caribbean Island of Curacao. The story begins with a running gun battle between a helicopter, and a gunman, in a cigarette boat. After which the private eyes struggle to solve their case, or at least get out with their lives while, in the midst of stunning night life, scenery of unbelievable beauty, and violence that is unspeakable. We won't give the story away, but we'll say this: it will seem as the pages turn themselves.

By Amazon Customer While on vacation I couldn't sleep and borrowed a traveling companion's Kindle. Since she had already bought Curacao I decided to read a few pages hoping to get drowsy. However, I found the book to be so engrossing that it didn't make me sleepy. I had to force myself to put it down. I found it a very exciting read. It was a little longer on action thriller than mystery, but was still very much to my liking. The characters were very colorful and full of life, the locales great. I didn't see the protagonist as being over the top anymore than Ian Flemming's, or John D. MacDonald's, Who E.L. Baker mentions in the book, protagonists are. All technology used in the book, I understand, is currently used by today's private eyes. I liked it so much that I just bought it in Kindle for my Nephew. Take a look for yourself, you won't regret it.

By JohnT I have yet to decide if this is fantasy or a real action work. The heroine is improbable. 23 years old, speaks multiple languages, versed in flying all kinds of aircraft, expert scuba diver, has a Hollywood boyfriend (no bedroom scenes here), has a diplomatic passport, has a support system that would rival many nations...and more.I thought I would give it a chance because I read it while in Aruba and have made a couple visits to Curacao. In my humble opinion, there are too many references to massive mammary glands, bouncing boobs (double DD's and double GG's) that cause admiring young men to run off the road and/or cause riots at street parties.Maybe it would appeal more to the young men who might want to chase the topless ladies.

Writer provides nice descriptive details, however, all the commas make it hard to read - some re-writing and editing would help. Didn't care for the breast obsession, but it did add humor in some spots.

A great tale of south Texas By Kindle Customer A wonderful told story of the old west with great characters and detailed scenes of the area where you could just see the cactus and the heat with danger all around with a pretty good romance thrown in, you won't be disappointed.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Enjoyable Old-Fashioned Novel By M. Paul Holsinger Rex Beach was a best-selling novelist during the first several decades of the last century. Best known for his first work, The,Spoilers, a novel about the Gold Rush to Nome in 1900, Beach's many subsequent novels have been, in the words of several literary specialists, "merifully forgotten." Heart of the Sunset, published in 1915 and set in northern Mexico and Texas's Rio Grande Valley is one of those later books. Formulaic and loaded, it is filled with a slew of "bad guys," a brawny and heroic Texas Ranger, a ravishingly beautiful love interest and who knows how many other cliched characters. Will Dave get the girl or will the evil Mexican General Longorio win the day? Will justice triumph and love conquer all? Three guesses.No-one reads Rex Beach today looking for great literature. He was a product of his times, giving an anxious public exciting contemporary stories to suit their reading tastes. Today's more sophisticated readers, on the other hand, will find little to draw them to this work but personally I enjoyed it a lot. Heart of the Sunset is enjoyable kitsch and a fun read to wile away a few hours.

Review Jennifer Fincher reviewed The Horsemen (5 Book Series) This is the best series I have ever read December 27, 2015This is the best series I have ever read. I am an avid reader and have my kindle unlimited for them, This series made me want to buy each book and sit on the edge of my seat with each page turned. I have never been so engrossed in a series like this one. Each and every character is well thought out and extremely enjoyable. I love the fact that just when you think you know what is going to happen it changes to something you never even thought of. I can truly say these characters and this series will stay with me for life. I usually do not like to reread books. These books stay on my kindle and phone. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. this is the best series i have ever read By Jennifer Fincher this is the best series i have ever read. I am a avid reader and have my kindle unlimited for them,This series made me want to buy each book and sit on the edge of my seat with each page turned. I have never been so engrossed in a series like this one. Each and every character is well thought out and extremely enjoyable. I love the fact that jsut when you think you know what is going to happen it changes to something you never even thought of. I can truly say these characters and this series will stay with me for life. I usually do not like to reread books. These books stay on my kindle and phone. To see such love, respect and consideration portrayed through out each and every character and yet each character is unique and different. A fan for life and impatiently waiting the next book.
