Trapped on the world of Rysalis by the armored alien Siafu, the mentally Gifted brother and sister Kerill and Katrissa Leksander, together with their telepathic equine partners, Fiach and Roamar, hope for rescue as they struggle to avoid capture. Thought to be the last of their kind and believed to hold the key to the ultimate defeat of the Siafu, Kerill and Katrissa are a prize the Siafu would do anything to obtain; but they aren’t the only ones. Crystal Falkon is a known ally of the Leksanders, the princess of a former mercenary empire, and one of the few they believe they can trust. The Havenworld Consortium, on the other hand, while one of the few factions left within their Galactic Habitable Zone that would dare fight against the Siafu, is not always known to be trustworthy and the unit sent by its leaders may prove to be more foe than friend. It’s a race against time to see who will get to the Leksanders first—and if they’ll manage to evade the Siafu long enough to make it off the planet.

By Greg I originally purchased this book following a tweet posted by an account of someone tweeting as a horse (is it sad that I follow such?). So this Twitter horse named Fiach is actually a character in this book. Space dramas aren't typically my thing but I really enjoyed this book. While I got it initially to read the one-liners of my favorite equine twitter account, I found myself taking to some of the other characters as well. All built up to an explosive finale (literally) and left me wanting to know more about what happens next. I'm hoping the author releases the next book soon!

It should be a happy day in Mrs Alving's household, on the day of her son's return from Paris and the eve of the opening of an orphanage dedicated to the memory of her late husband, Captain Alving. However, as final preparations are being made with Pastor Manders, old family secrets unravel the perceived identities of the key players. In a rigidly structured society the consequences are nothing short of disastrous. Ibsen's Ghosts, in Richard Harris's accomplished new version, offers a bleak view of the human condition.

Ghosts (French's Acting Edition S), by Henrik Ibsen

Review “Meyer's translations of Ibsen are a major fact in one's general sense of post-war drama. Their vital pace, their unforced insistence on the poetic centre of Ibsen's genius, have beaten academic versions from the field.” ―The New Statesman

Language Notes Text: English Original Language: Norwegian

About the Author Born in 1828, Henrik Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright and poet, often associated with the early Modernist movement in theatre. Determined to become a playwright from a young age, Ibsen began writing while working as an apprentice pharmacist to help support his family. Though his early plays were largely unsuccessful, Ibsen was able to take employment at a theatre where he worked as a writer, director, and producer. Ibsen s first success came with Brand and Peter Gynt, and with later plays like A Doll s House, Ghosts, and The Master Builder he became one of the most performed playwrights in the world, second only to William Shakespeare. Ibsen died in his home in Norway in 1906 at the age of 78.Richard Harris is a professor in the School of Geography and Geology at McMaster University.

Ibsen's controversial attack on conventional morality By Lawrance Bernabo Although Henrik Ibsen is the first great modern dramatist, his play "Ghosts" ("Gengangere") bears a strong similarity to ancient Greek drama, where the "tragic flaw" of the protagonist lives on in his children. However, in this story the curse on the Alving family has a medical basis. Published in 1881 but not performed until the next year because of its controversial subject matter, "Ghosts" deals with the impact of congenital venereal disease on a family. "Ghosts" strongly reflects Ibsen's desire to attack hypocrisy and conventional morality and caused even more of a furor that his previous drama, "A Doll's House."Helen Alving is building an orphanage as a memorial to her late husband and the night before the dedication she confesses to her old friend Parson Manders that her husband had been a "degenerate," and she is building the orphanage using her husband's "dirty" money so only her own money will pass on to her son, Oswald, who has just returned from living abroad. But then Oswald confesses he has a debilitating, incurable disease that the doctors believe was inherited. Even from beyond the grave, the "ghost" of Captain Alving ruins the life of his family. Mrs. Alving has to confess her husband's past to their son, destroying the young man's idealized view of his father. Knowing he is dying, Oswald wants to seduce the maid, Regina, so that when he enters the next stage of the disease she will give him poison. Oswald does not care that Regina is really his half-sister, and in the end it will be his mother's decision whether or not to give her son the poison when Oswald begins to have his attack. The ending of the play constitutes a Rorschach test for the audience, with Ibsen refusing to let them off the hook. "Ghosts" is probably the Ibsen drama that relies most on symbolism, from the heavy use of light/dark imagery to the purifying aspects of fire, to the obvious symbolism of ghosts. Consequently, I think this makes "Ghosts" one of the easier plays by Ibsen for students to analyze. Final Argument: Reading Ibsen's plays in order has greater benefit than usual when reading the works of a single author. If you read "A Doll's House," "Ghosts," "An Enemy of the People," and "The Wild Duck," then you will see the playwright struggling to find a play that will reflect his deeply held beliefs and also find widespread critical and public acceptance. The relationship between each set of plays in the progression becomes insightful, as Ibsen either extends or reverses elements of the previous drama. For teachers of drama there might not be a better quartet of plays to study to show the growth of a major dramatist.

At first I thought it was really easy to understand - the language was really simple compared to Shakespeare etc. But once I got down to analysing it, I found it really difficult. The ending is ambiguous and the characters are all a little disturbed. "ghosts" is about the past and its effect on the present. it also incorporates such complex themes as euthenaisia, incest and family secrets. if you can understand the complexity of the text, and make some attempt at understanding the ending, "Ghosts" is a pretty good read and is actually quite interesting to analyse.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Ghosts By Brother B This is not a story of the Paranormal. The use of the word ghost is meant to depict how negative lifestyle choices haunt a family in a metaphorical sense.

Eric Margrave, professional monster hunter, is not a fan of religion in general (mostly because most of them seem to have this weird idea that he's going to Hell). But a contract is a contract, and when it seems the Inquisition has found a real, live Prophet who needs a bodyguard, he finds himself once again running alongside an old paladin acquaintance to deliver the kid across the country in safety. Of course, things are never that simple, particularly when Heaven and Hell are involved, and many, many people are interested in someone who can see the future. Now Eric is mostly just wondering what will get him killed first: the demons, the cults, or his own 'allies'. The answer of course, being none of them... because what REALLY gets you is the thing you never see coming.

Mikesh-Whitney Andrew Moczulski has been writing stories of Eric Margrave for a while now; "Fun and Prophet" is the fifteenth book in the series and the second novel-length entry. The phrase "more of the same" applies--this is fairly standard monster-hunting urban fantasy fare. The strengths lie in the excellent action scenes, cinematically described to draw the reader in with suspense and excitement, the quirky and unusual characters, and the humor (generally of the deadpan and/or snarky variety, laced lightly with "black comedy"). The weaknesses lie in the occasional moments where the humor takes over the story to its detriment and the fact that most of the protagonist characters can be hard to identify with in the story's more serious moments. The plot follows pretty much the same formula as Moczulski's previous novel, "Tourists and Other Monsters," with the hero hired for a mission, spending the first half of the book in a running place-to-place chase while encountering escalating threats, followed by a plot twist about the halfway point leading to a quarter-book of "down time" while the threats slacken and the cast refocuses on the new situation with the addition of a newly-introduced character who's more annoying than she needs to be (and this book's Candace is especially bad, because she appears completely out of left field late in the story without any foreshadowing, and exists almost entirely for comic relief in ways that three other pre-existing characters already provide in the story; her use in the novel pretty much took the rating of this review from "four-and-a-half, rounded up to five" to "four-and-a-quarter, rounded down to four"), leading to a final, apocalyptic confrontation over the last quarter of the book. It will be noted that Moczulski tends towards brilliant in his apocalyptic confrontations, with suspense, excitement, and probably the best post-battle one-liner I've ever read. One area in which "Fun and Prophet" is decidedly *not* formulaic, I must add, though, is in its treatment of religion. Urban fantasy is a genre in which capital-G God and organized religion do very badly indeed. Moczulski does an excellent job of breaking outside this mode, managing to make Good and Evil alike both live up to their natures, to respect those with genuine faith while castigating the extremists *as* extremists instead of pretending that "having faith" and "fringe whackjob" are synonyms. And he does all this while seeing through the eyes of a main character who's pretty much as short-sighted and worldly as he can be. It's honestly the best treatment of this issue that I've seen this side of Jim Butcher. So would I recommend "Fun and Prophet"? Definitely. I wouldn't suggest it for newcomers to the series (the plot is self-contained, but the numerous callbacks to previous titles makes it much easier if the readers know characters' previous interactions), but if you've read some of the earlier shorts and novellas and want something a little meatier to sink your teeth into, "Fun and Prophet" will fill that appetite.

Best Angular book I have read to date By CH3CH2OH I have read Pro AngularJS (Expert's Voice in Web Development) by Freeman and Mastering Web Application Development with AngularJS and this book is better than both. It follows google's recommended scaffolding, testing and structure. So if you want to learn Angular in a way that will translate well to others, then consider getting this book. This book is great if you have a base understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. There are no chapters in this book on them specifically, which makes sense to me but for some reason the added chapters seem to be common in books like this. I doubt you would need any prior knowledge of AngularJS, though I had some when I read it.The first chapter covers the obligatory project and it is a stock tracking app. Which for me was a nice change from the standard cart building project. After that there rest of the book is just a good explanation of Angular, broken down logically into sections that relate to each other (read the chapter list for the breakdown). The Authors are big on custom directives and filters, which is nice. I learned some new ways to work with Angular that work better than they ways I was using. He is also big on the word 'paradigm' for some reason. I swear it comes up at least 5 times a chapter. There are a lot of gems in there such as when to choose a filter over a service or a directive over a factory etc. I had been using stuff based on the other 2 books I read that worked, but was not ideal and it felt fragile or clumsy at times. I now have a few more options that will work better depending on the need.I have also read a lot of blogs on routes and SEO for SPA's and this book again provided me with the best explanations that I have had so far. There is also some solid intro stuff on yeoman, grunt and gulp.If you want to learn Angular I recommend this book. I was going to wait for the one published by Manning but I am glad I got this now rather than wait.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Covers the broad AngularJS/Javascript ecosystem By George Jiang This book covers the core AngularJS framework (v1.2), as well as the broad AngularJS/Javascript ecosystem, and even some server side Node.js packages (in the context of development with Angular), including- package management (npm, bower);- build and scaffolding (grunt, gulp, yeoman);- js file/module loader (RequireJS, Browserify);- testing (Mocha, Karma, protractor);- search engine optimization (Prerender);- UI libraries (AngularStrap, ui-bootstrap);- mobile framework (Ionic);- server communication (Loopback, SocketIO, Firebase);- isomorphic js validation (Mongoose schema)The book is very well structured and is suitable for first time read or being used as a reference. The example SPA in Chapter 1 (the largest example in the book), although built step by step, can be challenging for readers who are new to front end js development.Even though the book uses Angular 1.2 for all the example code, the content of the book should be applicable to Angular 1.3/1.4.

The impression I got was it was a good book for Angular beginners. That it concentrated on Angular and learning it,. Boy was I wrong. I want to learn Angular not:YeomanGulpBowerGrunt etc, etc, etc. The book relies on these tools and the versions are old. I waited a week and couldn't wait to began going through the book intending to do it chapter by chapter and follow along the way the authors intended. That didn't work out so well. In the first chapter they have you installing these other dependencies and the fun begins here. There are errors in installing some of these tools that require visits to StackOverflow to find out the workarounds. After investing the time to get, in this case Bowen installed and get Grunt server to run you embark on a journey to get services and then install more stuff.Boom, that's when I gave up.By the way I've been in software development for 20+ years and ain't no noob when it comes to learning new tools and technologies.Bottom line, if you are looking for a primer on Angular then this book isn't for you. I wanted a path to learn Angular and all this other stuff just gets in the way. If it all worked like it most likely did when they wrote the book this story might have had a different ending.Back to looking for a better book.

About the Author Author Travis Wright was born and raised in a small, Oregon town, where his love of the outdoors began. He grew up hunting and fishing in the rural Northwest, a lifestyle that transferred easily to a life in the Last Frontier. Wright has lived in Alaska for 24 years and has recently retired from selling guns to write full time. He is enjoying a quieter life and has focused all of his time on storytelling for now. He is an NRA-certified instructor and continues to enjoy teaching others gun skill and safety, as well as shooting his own guns. Wright's interest in firearm technology and his active duty service in the Marine Corps Infantry, are both influential in his work as a writer. While Wright has written poetry off and on for most of his adult life, his work as a novelist began in 2010 with the survival story, “Uncertain Times.” Since putting that work to rest, he hasn't stopped writing. Wright's lifelong active imagination and curiosity of the unknown have found their outlet in storytelling. The recent introduction of his fifth book, “The Wilderness" is sure to be a favorite. Wright's current work, “Nomad,” is the second installment of the “Mark Mitchell Chronicles,” a prequel to the hit story, “DeadHorse.” He looks forward to many more years of telling good stories, putting smiles on faces and keeping the pages turning.

Strightforward - It delivers what it says that it will By Juliana Adams I have read three of this authors books and am always struck with how her insights are presented in the most concise, developmentally instructive and highly entertaining manner. Reading any of her books always results in having the timeless message of, say what you have to say and avoid the temptation to expound on what is original and valuable, by cluttering and distracting the reader with "more."So much is available in books and on-line for those seeking money or support for a need they have, but The CrowdFunding Guide for Authors and Writers provides information that is once again, succinctly relevant for authors. It delivers as a guide that walks you through converting a concept into a reality.

By Melody Jones Did you know you can use OPM to fund your book project? OPM is Other People's Money, and crowdfunding is how you get it. Author Judith Briles gives you practical, step-by-step instructions on how to accomplish this. She tells you upfront that it isn't easy. In fact, she states "Roughly 30 percent of publishing campaigns succeed." 70% fail, but you don't have to be one of those. With a good idea, HARD WORK, and this book, you CAN succeed. I purchased this book at an Author U event, and it was well worth it to have a goldmine of information at my fingertips.

It is a collection of short stories about various breeds of spaniels, their owners and their adventures. The dogs' owners have written the stories about their beloved pets. The book might make you cry, but will definitely make you smile. The best part? All proceeds from the sale of this book go to charity to help other dogs less fortunate than the dogs in the book.

In keeping with the Pillar New Testament Commentary’s distinctive character, this volume by James R. Edwards on Luke gives special attention to the Third Gospel’s vocabulary and historical setting, its narrative purpose and unique themes, and its theological significance for the church and believers today.Though Luke is often thought to have a primarily Gentile focus, Edwards counterbalances that perspective by citing numerous evidences of Luke’s overarching interest in depicting Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s providential work in the history of Israel, and he even considers the possibility that Luke himself was a Jew. In several excursuses Edwards discusses particular topics, including Luke’s infancy narratives, the mission of Jesus as the way of salvation, and Luke’s depiction of the universal scope of the gospel. While fully conversant with all the latest scholarship, Edwards writes in a lively, fluent style that will commend this commentary to ministers, students, scholars, and many other serious Bible readers.

Best Preacher's Commentary on Luke By Dr Simon Perry (author of Atheism After Christendom) This is a magnificent volume on Luke - and I've read through around 50 in the last two years. So much so, that when I read any recently published volumes it is very difficult to find anyone saying anything you haven't already heard. Edwards, however, keeps one eye on the Hebrew Gospel - which allows him a genuinely fresh perspective, consistently throughout the volume, on virtually every single passage. At the same time however, there is no deliberate attempt to be different or maverick. In addition, the way he writes, the selection of relevant detail, the scholarly weight combined with the simplicity of style, combines to produce a tremendous piece of work. In particular, a preacher with a little theological training will get a lot out of this - because the way that Edwards writes almost brings Luke to life. It is a perfect combination of serious care, concern to present an authentic historical Jesus, founded on heavyweight biblical scholarship and polished into a beautifully readable text. And I like how the pages smell...

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Lombardi of the Word By A. Lee The book appeared intimidatingly thick until I began reading the text. As a layman, Edwards drew me into the multi-layered assessment of Luke as writer, physician-trained diagnostician, historical observer, fact-checker, adherent, believer, follower, and Greek, or Hebrew, citizen of the larger world. A friend said to me that she'd be wary of any book that's longer than the writing it assesses. I kindly disagree. John Madden said he didn't understand coaching until Vince Lombardi spent 8 hours teaching the Packer Student-Body-Right Sweep. Lombardi used the blackboard, ran film, role-played each of the 11 players in different scenarios, showed how to coach to problems, and the best coaches of the day busily took notes. Thus do I view the might given to Jim Edwards. He teaches the language, the history, the culture, the tides, the significance and, most mightily, the centrality of Christ and demonstrates, teaches, and coaches us to study, learn, and worship, likewise so that Luke's observations and the insights of Jesus' teachings coalesce in an intellectual, spiritual, and instructional swim in the waters of the Lord. For lay readers, welcome the breadth and the gravitas of this illuminating and quietly spectacular work as it settles into the soul.

This latest offering in the Pillar New Testament Commentary series, edited by the venerable D. A. Carson, might be just what you are looking for. Mr. Edwards already contributed the well-received volume on Mark in this series, and this new volume has been eagerly anticipated. The Introduction is relatively short, but its strength lies in discussing things you read no where else. If you consult several commentaries, they can at times be painfully repetitive. He makes a strong statement on the Word of God in his first paragraph, which makes you feel in good hands. His section on the testimony we get from Early Christianity is fascinating. History is his special trait throughout the entire volume actually.I could not agree with him on sources. There is much speculation in such a discussion, and he does not just skip to the final form as some do now.Despite my disagreement on sources, the commentary sparkled with great, pertinent detail that really gave insight into the text. For example, there was plenty of material on the birth of Christ that would help anyone teaching or preaching. In fact, I found that true in every passage I studied in it. I call attention to his masterful handling of the Parable of the Prodigal Son. That was a joy to read and had profound spiritual insight as well. The Cross and the Resurrection were standout too.I will always consult this volume on any passage on Luke that I study going forward. I predict pastors will love this volume just as I do. This is a winner!I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

The site that is recommended to be able to use a copy of photoshop was a joke. There was no copy of photoshop I could use and I even signed up for the free membership like the book said. I hadn't thought about just giving someone my idea and having them write a book so it had some useful information but it was not the best book I have read on writing and publishing a Kindle book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A nice start.... By Jonathan Green This book does show you how to get a book onto Amazon quickly. So it meets the promise of the title. As someone who actually writes and publishes books on kindle I was hoping for something new. This is the simplest and most basic guide on the subject anywhere on Amazon. If you want the barebones basics, then this is a good place to start.I can't say that I'm a big fan of paying someone five dollars to write a book and then throwing it up on Amazon, but that is what this book recommends. If you want something fast and simple, this book does explain it. You can read the book in about fifteen minutes and like all books on the subject is filled with links to the more expensive version of the course. If you haven't dabbled in publishing your own book, then this is a decent place to start.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A ridiculous joke and doomed to failure if anyone attempts it! By Gabriella The title of the book alone should be enough to warn anyone that this is a method that is doomed to failure!!!

Worries about scientific objectivity seem never-ending. Social critics and philosophers of science have argued that invocations of objectivity are often little more than attempts to boost the status of a claim, while calls for value neutrality may be used to suppress otherwise valid dissenting positions. Objectivity is used sometimes to advance democratic agendas, at other times to block them; sometimes for increasing the growth of knowledge, at others to resist it. Sandra Harding is not ready to throw out objectivity quite yet. For all of its problems, she contends that objectivity is too powerful a concept simply to abandon. In Objectivity and Diversity, Harding calls for a science that is both more epistemically adequate and socially just, a science that would ask: How are the lives of the most economically and politically vulnerable groups affected by a particular piece of research? Do they have a say in whether and how the research is done? Should empirically reliable systems of indigenous knowledge count as "real science"? Ultimately, Harding argues for a shift from the ideal of a neutral, disinterested science to one that prizes fairness and responsibility.

Objectivity and Diversity: Another Logic of Scientific Research, by Sandra Harding

Review "The way the term 'objective' has been wielded in science and in everyday life, to police the academy as well as public testimony, has itself not been terribly objective. Harding provides here an informative overview of the real world applications of objectivity, using some fascinating case studies. She looks closely at the debates about the value of diversity in relation to objectivity. A very timely book!" (Linda Martín Alcoff, Hunter College, City University of New York)"Harding's new book Objectivity and Diversity raises new questions about two central concepts in STS – objectivity and diversity – and in doing so it allows us to animate them in new kinds of relationships and shows that objectivity and certain forms of diversity can be mutually supportive. Harding does this in two major ways: by considering specific cases where science has been shaped by social values and interests and drawing conclusions about the 'logical positivist legacy' from them; and by locating these issues within particular historical contexts. Though the 'social' tends to be treated as an impediment to scientific research rather than a source of new resources and pathways, social and political movements have deeply shaped the practices and philosophy of science. . . . It's a wonderful, clear read." (Carla Nappi New Books in Science, Technology, and Society)"Sandra Harding’s important work on standpoint methodologies and strong objectivity has influenced a generation of scholars. In Objectivity and Diversity readers will find a detailed map of methods for achieving strong objectivity, including the study of knowledges rooted in social movements, poor women in the developing world, and indigenous societies. But they will also encounter analyses of how the concepts of objectivity, positivism, and secularism are deeply interwoven in their Western cultural and historical contexts. This book will appeal to experienced scholars already familiar with Harding’s work, and it will also serve as a concise and comprehensive introduction for young scholars." (David J. Hess, Vanderbilt University)"In a comprehensive analysis of the historical conditions and social movements that have challenged dominant conceptions of scientific objectivity, Harding persuasively argues that diversity is not solely about inclusion but is essential to a pro-democratic and objective social analysis. Her argument clearly explains why objectivity is fundamentally about whose knowledge, whose agenda, and whose lives matter." (Margaret L. Andersen, University of Delaware)"Sandra Harding is one of the founders of feminist epistemology. In this important and clearly argued book she addresses some of the big issues of philosophy of science. She revisits her well-known positions on standpoint theory and strong objectivity and shows how they are enriched by encounters with the social sciences in the shape of  development policy and postcolonial science and technology studies. She advocates for a philosophy of science for all research disciplines which permits a form of objectivity allied with a deep concern for social justice." (Trevor Pinch, Cornell University)

About the Author Sandra Harding is Distinguished Professor of Education and Gender Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Distinguished Affiliate Professor of Philosophy at Michigan State University. She is the editor of The Postcolonial Science and Technology Studies Reader and the author of Sciences from Below: Feminisms, Postcolonialities, and Modernities.

By Rocio I'm using this book for my Community Practicum in Mental Health class and so far it is a great help! Its perfect for senior level undergrad students or a first year grad student newly interning in a psych or mental health program. Very easy to understand, not too" textbook-y", but still filled with lots of great information you would need in order to be successful in your internship. I'm so glad this book was suggested by my instructor!

It reads like a reference guide. It's very helpful for first year practicum students who need an introduction to therapy techniques.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. For Undergraduates By Jessica This book is for undergraduates, although it states on Amazon that it is for graduate students. It's a great book for students in practicum, but it is definitely geared toward undergrads.

It kept me on the edge of my seat, always wanting to know what was going to happen next. It's really cool how you get to see things from the pets' perspective, knowing what they are thinking and saying. It's a must read for anyone who is an animal lover, especially if you are into animal rights. But it's also got a love story that really makes you feel like you are watching your friends find an awesome relationship. I know this is fiction, but it feels very real.

This is a great and easy book to read from the very young to the very old. It has action, suspense, humor, love and dramatic story-telling. If you love dogs or cats, you'll definitively enjoy this read. But even if you don't or never had a pet, the author makes you feel for the animals, hopefully encouraging readers to adopt from their local shelters. Exciting and thought-provoking, this reader cannot wait for the next chapter in the series!
