Quacks and pundits beware! The internet is a powerful beast when it comes to science; the answer to any query you may have is just a few keystrokes away. But when there are multiple answers from various sources, how do we know what information is reliable? In Monkeys, Myths, and Molecules, bestselling author Dr. Joe Schwarcz takes a critical look at how facts are misconstrued in the media. He debunks the myths surrounding canned food, artificial dyes, SPF, homeopathy, cancer, chemicals, and much more.Unafraid to expose the sheer nonsense people are led to believe about health, food, drugs, and our environment, Dr. Joe confronts pseudoscience and convincingly and entertainingly advocates for a scientific approach to everyday life.

Brown These are some smoothly-written essays on science, mainly nutrition and chemistry, applied to everyday questions like cooking and health. The style is clear and lively, although the author does occasionally veer to the edge of professor-jokes (overelaborate telegraphed jokes that have been told too many times, and weren't all that funny to begin with). The strengths of the book are the author's expertise and straightforward explanations. In addition to his scientific specialties, he works in some bits of history and other subjects. A weakness is that the questions he discusses are not particularly interesting. For one example, he tells us there are people who think chewing gum is bad for you, in part due to additives and chemicals it contains. He makes the point that all additives are chemicals, then mentions some of the slandered ingredients and defends them as either not present in chewing gum, not harmful or not in sufficient quantity to be harmful. Now if you don't chew gum or know about the people who dislike it, none of this seems like relevant information. It's always nice to know something, but there seem more useful bits of knowledge. The author doesn't try to understand why people dislike gum and debate the issue fairly, the reader gets the impression that he thinks they are scientifically illiterate, and thus not worthy of refutation. I took the trouble to look them up and they're more reasonable than the author suggests. They list some reasonable sounding objections, such as links to temporomandibular joint disorder, headaches and increased mercury uptake for people with mercury fillings. There are real studies to back these claims, although they are small sample and not the most authoritative. There's no consideration of the amount of risk relative to the pleasure of chewing gum, but the author commits this same sin frequently, for example with respect to cantaloupe (he strongly recommends thoroughly washing it before cutting, because some people have died from ingesting bacteria from the outside of a cantaloupe, but he gives no numbers to compare the additional life expectancy from washing versus the time it takes to wash, nor the health benefit of this compared to things of similar effort). The anti-gum people also seem to dislike ingesting things were not present in preindustrial human diets. This is their objection to the chemicals they complain about, not specific claims of health damage from them. And they use the word "chemical" in the sense of "molecules extracted or created in refined forms via industrial processes" in contrast to the scientific sense in which any molecule is a chemical; so complaining about chemical additives makes sense. So they're not as foolish as the author implies, or at least they're not inconsistent, and he hasn't addressed their points. So whether you care about the issue or not, this book doesn't add anything useful to the subject.More generally, the author tends to pull out what he considers to be the scientific question in a controversy, and answer his narrow questions; but suggest that he has settled the broader controversy. In the first topic of the book, he traces the history of nutrition advice to reduce heart disease, which was usually overconfident and often wrong. But he does not draw the lesson that scientists should be more humble. Instead he gives his opinion about the current state of knowledge. I grant that his opinions are more nuanced and reasonable than the historical views he criticizes, but I suspect those earlier scientists were more nuanced and reasonable than the people they were refuting. For all of this, it's not clear that scientific nutrition advice has saved net lives since the first expert made the first pronouncement.Despite these defects, the book teaches a lot of science in terms that range from mildly entertaining to painless. It's not a great popular science book, but it's a pretty good one.

A large disjointed collection of short essays By Vincent Poirier The best thing about McGill chemistry professor Joe Schwarcz's Monkeys, Myths, and Molecules is that the title uses the Oxford Comma. (Hear, hear!)The second best thing about MMM is that while billing itself as a book about science in general, it covers lots of chemical topics, from how aspirin is composed to adding copper on a nail using the blue crystals found in chemistry sets from the 1960s. (Today's chemistry sets don't have chemicals. These aren't considered safe in this age of politically correct nannies.) Most science essays and clips we see in the media are about space, physics, computers, or biology. It`s really great to see chemistry in the forefront for once. The third best thing in MMM is Schwarcz's incessant debunking of misconceptions and outright charlatanisms: lots of poisons are natural, just about everything that is beneficial in food is a chemical, and homeopathy is a sham. But in the end, as a book, it's disappointing: it's a large disjointed collection of two or three page essays tenuously gathered under different topics. It's a good book to dip into from time to time, but it doesn't build up a theme, it doesn't present a big picture, and it doesn't exhaustively study a good topic.Fun but not engrossing.Vincent Poirier, Montreal

By Rob Natiuk Solomon wrote, "Pride goes before a fall" (Proverbs 16:18). A-35 page book, less 3 pages for copyright and table of contents, less 4-5 pages for back-end promotion, and someone claims that this is an ULTIMATE guide to the Bible, which consists of 66 books, 750,00 words, and almost 6,000 years of history. Good try!Does it deliver on its claim? If it attracts readers to the Bible and simplifies it for them, good. To do that in such a short book would take precise and concise writing, and arrangement of headings and sections to nail down the key points. But I found this technique to be lacking, the writing to wander here and there, and wordy verbiage. So we're reduced to generalizations, sometimes incorrect: "The Bible is the only way to hear God's voice and understand Him. The Bible contains all the answers about the world and life that believers seek." (Loc. 89). Even astute biblical scholars would disagree with that over-claim.STILL, this book can do good for it uplifts the importance of the Bible in today's world and gives us a bit of an overview. However, not all statements are factually accurate according to the Bible's record. For instance, "In Genesis Abraham wanted to sacrifice his son Isaac but the Lord provided him with a lamb instead" (Loc. 207). No, Abraham DID NOT WANT to do that, but he felt God had ordered him to do that. Quite a difference. Also, the author sometimes states his own beliefs or conclusions of what the Bible says rather than just sticking with the Bible. Example: "We know that God exists because He speaks in first person." That is no proof.I appreciate this author trying to explain the Bible in just 30 pages. I couldn't do it. I wouldn't even try. But he's right in stating that the way of salvation through Jesus Christ is a simple truth -- and yet has ultimate results. God bless him and all who read this book.

By Donald Orosco In this crazy world we live in, we often need a moment to step back, regroup, and really think about this life and our purpose here on Earth. Turning to God, I think, is the best thing that you can do to re-establish your sense of purpose. This book was so helpful because the material wasn't being to forced. It goes into different information and even has books on the history of the Lord. The book is very well written, easy to understand because it so clear. I loved it. Thanks

Some info is conveyed incorrectly but I do not believe that it is intentional. Good read if you have 30 minutes to spare but don't expect to come away with any major spiritual revelations.

Perfect timing in terms of publishing date. We've had record rains in NM and I have flowers coming out of my ears. Was visiting Old Town with guest (The only time a NM goes to Old Town) and hesitantly bought this book. I have several other wildflower books. Is this worth it? Yes, this one beats them all, hands down!!! I have been able to identifiy all the flowers on my land (I live in Edgewood, NM), and plan to take this book when I hike Sandia or Manzanos.Last week we went to the Grasslands National Park (OK, Texas, NM and CO). It was the perfect time for flower viewing. It was like the Wizard of Oz...covered with flowers everywhere. I purchased the Plains Wildflower book at Capulin, put this one was way better. Told the ranger to order this one.Why is this book so good? It is Super organized by color. How can you look up a flower if you don't know it's name!!???!! Each page is meticulously photographed with close-up, wide-angle and leaves. Some books just have the flower, without any references such as the structure or the leaves. The Plains book, I mentioned had a dozen daisy-type wildflowers. I finally found one that was similar to one I saw, but was never sure as there was no shot of the leaves.Everywhere I see this book, I tell the sales people to get everyone to buy it. I plan to purchase at least a half dozen this year for gifts....Hey Father's Day is this Weekend. My next step is to find these authors, praise them, and get this baby autographed!!!!

Excellent for Northern New Mexico wildflowers in that it has both line drawings AND several photographs for each selection with close-ups! In addition to the common flowers the book also includes some of the less known varieties. I highly recommend it for identifying wildflowers in NM from Albuquerque's Sandia/Manzano mountains northwards.

Along with beautiful pictures, descriptions, growth patterns, native medicinal uses are included. This is my "go to" book for wildflowers in this area.

"The novel is a very skillful weave of two parallel worlds populated by interesting characters who come together to battle an evil overlord. The plot cleverly moves characters between these parallel worlds and masterfully intertwines science and art to create magic which gives the novel a real WOW factor. Sarina's Nightmare is fast-moving, uses language beautifully and has a unique blend of science and fantasy. Looking forward to the second chronicle!"- Fran B.

A strange turn of events places Sarina's art competition entry in jeopardy and plunges her into another world, where she discovers she has strange powers ... and a fearsome enemy.

What she doesn't know is that her school nemesis, Nathan, is receiving messages from the other world, and that they will soon be thrown together in a desperate race to save the parallel world--and their own lives.

    The Dream Killer (Book II)

When the world's greatest minds lose their wits, only one girl can bring them back ...

12-year-old Sarina wants one thing and one thing only: to win a place at a prestigious art school in Paris. Dizzy spells and blackouts plague her efforts, and she fears she'll be confined to an institution like her two mentally ill great aunts.

Nathan and his mentor Professor Harrison make a shocking scientific discovery: Sarina may be the only person who can save the world's greatest minds. She must make a choice. Concentrate on her impending art finals, save the world, or somehow retain her sanity while attempting to do both.

    Moon Zero (Book III)

Episode III of the Dreamer Chronicles finds our two young heroes hurled into a terrifying race against time!

Sarina, now 13, has a big problem, and it’s way bigger than the one she thinks she has. She’ll have to save the world. Again.

Strange, seemingly unconnected occurrences provoke unrest across two worlds: her old enemy, Makthryg, is making plans to escape his prison; in Australia, a prominent observatory has reported an unusual and worrying aberration in the Moon’s orbit.

    And Sarina is kidnapped.

When her friend, Nathan, discovers a frightening message on Professor Harrison’s computer, the young adventurers are catapulted on a wild journey to do battle with the cosmos itself.

The Good Cook's Book of Mustard: One of the World’s Most Beloved Condiments, with more than 100 recipes, by Michele Anna Jordan

From Library Journal Close to a dozen books on salsas have appeared in recent months, so a second cookbook devoted to another of our other favorite condiments should come as no surprise. Actually, there is little overlap between Jan Roberts-Dominguez's The Mustard Book (LJ 9/15/93) and this new title. Roberts-Dominguez concentrates on making homemade mustards and then uses them in a variety of international dishes. Jordan, a former chef and author of several cookbooks, including The Good Cook's Book of Oil and Vinegar (LJ 8/92), begins with a lengthy history of mustard and then offers a nice collection of imaginative and unusual recipes that feature it. Review “I cannot imagine a serious mustard-o-phile living without this book. The text is informative and the recipes (for making mustard or for cooking with mustard) are both imaginative and easy to follow. What else can I say except that it definitely cuts the you-know-what!” —Barry Levenson, curator, National Mustard Museum

I THOUGHT it was a book of recipes for home-made mustard; but, it's actually recipes for dishes that USE mustard as an ingredient.Yes, there are a few recipes for mustard, and one of them is excellent. I would buy it again for that recipe but wish there were more like it.

The first part of the book provides much information about the plant, from its cultivation in Egypt some 5,000 years ago, to the types of mustard plants that are popular in different parts of the world. Jordan describes the three main types of mustard seed, the yellow, the brown, and the black, contrasting their flavors and uses. She includes charts listing characteristics of different types of commercial mustards, from flavor to keeping qualities. She provides brief comments about the nutritional properties of mustard and medical uses. She also describes how mustard fans can organize a mustard tasting, and includes pages in the back of the book formatted for taking notes during mustard tastings. The main part of the book is devoted to mustard recipes, organized by course, including appetizers, soups, main courses, vegetables, salads, sauces, and even desserts. There is also a chapter on mustard-making, including recipes for making specialty mustards from whole seeds, ground powder, or commercially prepared mustards. Most of the recipes call for fresh or unprocessed ingredients, and canned ingredients are generally restricted to tomatoes or cooked beans. While many of the recipes sound appetizing, they also sound a bit fancy for daily fare. If you've got time on your hands and love to cook, then you will find some tasteful and tasty ideas to try here. But there aren't a lot of recipes in this book for just plain basic cooking that make use of mustard.

By SeriousAboutFunction This book would look wonderful on a coffee table -- I can't stop staring at the image on the front cover that seems so real that it wants to pop off of the page! But it's more than that.It begins with a brief but intriguing history of mustard's use as one of the "world's most beloved condiments." Then come recipes showing the many different uses and tastes that can be achieved with mustard, so the reader gets a full perspective of all that mustard has to offer (which is much more than I would have guessed!) The result is an enjoyable (and delicious!) course that will leave you really knowing how to use mustard. But the best part is the photography. These pictures have so much depth and character. From fields of yellow mustard plants to the detail of mustard seeds to fresh vegetables to be used in a recipe with mustard, I'd be seriously tempted to buy this book just for the pictures even if I didn't want the recipes and history!

She'd pushed beyond her family's traditions because Isabella Torres, intel analyst and soldier, had been driven to succeed—especially as part of the first all-female Special Ops unit, the Medusas. She'd survived training on sheer guts. Now her gut was telling her she belonged at the winter games, guarding a controversial young ice skater from terrorists—and from a larger, more sinister plot that could turn an athletic neutral zone into a battlefield. Her gut also said her sexy new boss would eventually realize an all-female detail could handle this operation. For this mission, her gut instinct was pitted against enemies from East and West…. Let the games begin.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. deep Medusa thriller By A Customer The Top Secret Medusa Group is assigned to protect Anya Khalid at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. Born in the Emirate of Bhoukar, but raised in Brisbane, she has become a world class figure skater who with the blessing of the Emir represents her birth country in the games. However, instead of being a heroine, many of the Bhoukar residents believe she is an abomination flaunting her sexuality and defying Islam.Medusa Isabella Torres is assigned as the lead to protect the skater because there is a viable assassination threat including a suicide bomber who could take out innocents as well as Anya. Delta Force Commander Dex Thorpe leads the overall security to quietly insure Munich does not happen in upstate New York. He detests working with a female, but soon changes his mind as he observes how competent Isabella is. As they team up to protect a skater carrying the world on her shoulders, the two operatives fall in love; but each knows keeping Anya safe and preventing a tragedy takes priority over their personal needs.Timed perfect with the Olympics in Torino in February and with the Spielberg movie, the latest Medusa tale is a strong novel that will excite the audience at any time of the year. The thriller stars a strong proficient female and a chauvinistic male who quickly becomes a born again supporter of women in dangerous missions due to the brave skillful work of Isabella. Part of the fascination in this novel resides with Anya who has pressures few if any (perhaps Jesse Owens in 1936 or Israeli athletes after Munich) have ever faced. The story line is driven by this wonderful support character as Cindy Dees provides the deepest best Medusa thriller yet because of Anya.Harriet Klausner

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An enjoyable and interesting read By Helen Hancox "The Medusa Game" is the second book I've read by Cindy Dees (I have also read "The Medusa Prophecy") and it's the second in the series (coming before "Prophecy" in the series timeline). Like the other book it's an enjoyable and light read with some interesting characters, situations and an engaging overall premise.Isabella Torres is a member of the Medusas, a female-only Delta-force-type Special Operations group. The Medusas are working hard to be accepted by the men of different Special Ops groups; they know that they can't compete in strength with men but believe that there are other occasions where their all-female team might come in handy. And they're exactly what is needed to guard a young Arab athlete at the winter Olympics. Anya Khalid has lived in Australia for the last ten year and isn't a practising muslim but her country are supporting her participation in the Olympics as a figure skater. Unfortunately the tradition figure-skater costume of a flimsy leotard doesn't work very well with the muslim requirement for a headscarf and other body coverings. The staff of the Olympics expect trouble but don't want to exacerbate it so the Medusas are taken on to provide bodyguarding duties for Anya but in a surreptitious way.Isabella instantly finds herself in conflict with Major Dexter Thorpe, the Delta force operative in charge of the different security teams. As Anya starts to find herself the target of extremists and Isabella and the other Medusas uncover a more serious terrorist plot she has to work with Dexter Thorpe and try to convince him of the value of the Medusas.Although a fairly short book this is a really enjoyable read. I loved the background information about ice skating - the hard work and athleticism involved, the ways in which the competitors relate to each other, the planning and training that is involved in producing a world-class skater. The special forces background details were also very interesting and the romance that takes place throughout the book is also rather nicely written. My only criticism is the author's worldview on Islam. The wearing of the veil is written throughout as a bad thing that Anya and Isabella need to avoid and there isn't really any discussion of the opposite view, that some muslim women find it liberating. It felt rather like "US good, Muslims bad" as an overall theme - which I am sure the author didn't strictly intend - and I found that sometimes rather uncomfortable. Especially as, of course, the terrorists in this book have to be muslim suicide bombers. Still it was a fun read and it's good to read about women who aren't simpering misses but who can work hard and professionally.

Would have been almost perfect if it didn't include some of the negative comments about Islam By SallMallReads A very difficult book for me to rate. It has a brilliant plot that includes ice skating, science, terrorism, Special Ops, Delta Force, action, suspense, and romance. It has about everything exciting. I especially liked how the author herself has actual experience with some of the crime stuff she has written. However, this was the first time I came across a romantic suspense or Silhouette that uses one of the two main characters to present a negative opinion of another religion or culture. In this case, the usual Islam was the focus. Some of the parts are very uncomfortable and offensive though some readers might just look at it as someone sharing their opinion. I was very upset with the remarks made and even thought of giving up on the book, but I was very intrigued about the general plot so continued on.It would have been a 5 for me if the author hadn’t shown a negative opinion of Islam or a culture and instead just stated or described a fact. And I use the word culture because a lot of the things mentioned are actually not just part of the Islamic religion but many cultures. The Medusas, a Special-Ops Unit, are a group of highly trained women, each of which has a diverse set of experience and knowledge such as in combat, flying planes, knowing different languages, etc. They’re a wonderful example of independent women fighting next to men. They have struggled to show that their group is worth forming and even in this book it takes seeing them in action for the men to fully see their abilities. They are assigned to provide protection to Anya Khalid, a Muslim skater who has people after her for wearing revealing clothes and performing in front of men. The Medusas work with Delta Force, their boss being Commander Dexter Thorpe. He and the main female lead Isabella are perfect for each other. Both are strong, competent, witty, and fun to read about. Great chemistry! I love how they tease and pick on each other. The romance developed at a very nice pace. Some reviewers have mentioned that the romance was not really there, and in a way that is true. Most of the book is about the terrorist plan being made against Anya. But I liked how we are given hints here and there of their feelings. In this way we are able to see these feelings grow deeper. We are not given Dex’s point of view but the reader can see clearly what Dex is thinking. The Bad Points:- There wasn’t enough focus on the actual skating. I had thought there would be more action as Anya skated but the skating was just sort of the location or setting where the action takes place.- Isabella has given up and is neutral to both her Iranian Muslim background from her mom’s side and the Mexican Catholic on her dad’s side. This was fine but she has a specific hatred towards the idea of women staying home, cooking, cleaning, and raising the kids. I wish in this book that women who have chosen that way of life were not dishonored or sort of referred to as not having any backbone and lowered next to women like Isabella who are out fighting. And though it wasn’t specifically stated that Isabella was referring to Muslim women, with her disgust toward a lot of the Islamic beliefs shown through her thoughts and actions, it was as if she was saying that only Muslim women choose that route.- Isabella’s hatred towards the veil was so strong that I feel that she wouldn’t be friendly if her charge was a Muslim woman wearing a veil instead of the clothes Anya wore. Another Medusa makes a joke about the veil saying that no wonder women can’t drive (as is the law in some country’s) because they can’t see through the veil. I didn’t appreciate this joke in general because of the fun it’s making of another culture’s belief. Also, in some countries women are allowed to drive as long as they wear gloves. And, I think a more detailed reference was needed for the veil. Islam requires that women be covered from head to toe, with their feet and face not needing to be covered. So a headscarf would be a hijab, the full covering where eyes are not even shown is the burka, if a long covering (abaya) is worn with a hijab, eyes showing, nose and mouth covered, that is called a nikaab. In this book it seemed as if the full burka was being referred to as the required covering but that is not true.- There is one scene that was written in a totally unnecessary way. Isabella is keeping close watch on Anya, which is her duty for the winter games. In this particular scene Anya is talking to a boy, Lazlo, another skater, in a room. As she’s listening extra closely because the boy had physically hurt Anya not too long ago, she starts thinking that she is chaperoning the boy and the girl as would happen in the typical Muslim culture. And she’s disgusted that she’s doing something of this nature. She’s also thinking that Anya and Lazlo have started treating her as if she was a Muslim chaperone. How do we know that they are thinking that, we are not given any dialogue to show that. And although the boy and girl are Muslim, she’s watching them because she’s a Medusa, a bodyguard for Anya. I don’t know why this comparison was made when if she was watching two boys instead of a boy and girl, and one of the boys had hurt the other one, she would still be listening and watching closely because she’s responsible for the safety of her charge.- I also didn’t like the description given on the clothing. Anya states that she shouldn’t have to talk about her clothing for skating whether it’s the abaya and the veil or a beautiful and tasteful dress for the competition. Having grown up in a city with a very large population of people from everywhere, abayas are considered beautiful by not only the Muslim community but people from all over. I have seen girls with hijabs and abayas being complimented all the time by Polish, Mecodonians, Africans, Christians, Catholics etc, for wearing very beautiful clothing. I would have preferred the author to have stated a description that was more factual instead of an opinion. It could have simply said that the veil is more covered or less revealing rather than saying the figure skating costume was more beautiful and tasteful.

"You'll race to the surprising ending, encountering treachery, triumphs and tragedy along the way. But, through it all, it will be the unceasing ability of the four hunters to rely on each other for their very lives that you'll remember most." - Don Sloan, author of the Dark Forces seriesWhen a colleague goes missing during a mission, Toby and Jack head to the Scottish Highlands to track her down. They have a general idea of where to look, but no idea of the danger that awaits them. Jack's lifelong nemesis is expecting their visit, and the over three-hundred-year-old vampire has a surprise waiting. The search-and-rescue job soon turns onto a fight for survival, and Toby's recently inherited warlock powers come in especially useful as the hunters become the hunted. Barely able to save themselves, Toby and Jack are at a complete loss for how to help the small Scottish town of Loubcroy when they come to truly appreciate the horrific agreement the wicked vampire has forged with its residents. The hunters call on familiar friends who quickly come to their aid as they face their most formidable threat yet. It turns out being a battle that leaves Toby, Jack, Rachel, and Natalie both physically and psychologically wounded.

Review "It's all part and parcel of the complex layering of characters' emotions that sets this well-written piece of fiction above others in the horror genre." - Publishers Daily Reviews"This book is awesome!  I am absolutely a fan of this series of books." - Us Girls & A Book

From the Back Cover The Agreement is the best book yet in the Shadow Tales series, highlighting the horror hunters' exploits as they attempt to tame a vampiric Valhalla they've discovered, and release the village's human occupants from a ghastly arrangement they've made with the Undead.Leading the fight once again is Toby Hoffman, the teen hunter who battled werewolves and warlocks in the first two books. Joining him are experienced hunter Jack Steele, and the two newest members of the team, Rachel Chochopi, a Native American mystic, and Natalie Sherwood, a young witch just now learning to control her prodigious powers. The action begins with Toby -- who has inherited several nifty new telekinetic and pyro kinetic abilities from a warlock upon the creature's death -- and Jack embarking on a search for a missing hunter -- Jack's lover and closest friend, Angelina Jane. The trail takes them to Loubcroy, Scotland, where there exists a hideous arrangement between interloping vampires and the town's human residents. The Chief of the vampire population is coolly urbane -- yet utterly ruthless -- Alister McKean. He rules the village with quiet surety, ready to settle down after more than three hundred years of living on the run. With a village in need of liberation, the hunters settle into their task with grim resolve. Does Jack find Angelina and set her free? Can Toby and Rachel pursue their budding romance in the midst of near-constant physical harm? And, will Natalie ultimately gain control of her wildly erratic supernatural abilities and use them for the common good? The teenage witch has recently discovered that her emotions can impact her increasingly powerful -- and destructive -- new powers. When she loses control of one, she loses control of the other. This leads to some serious self-doubt. In fact, all the teens struggle with issues such as self-doubt, hero complexes and even guilt as the book progresses. It's all part and parcel of the complex layering of characters' emotions that sets this well-written piece of fiction above others in the horror genre. You'll race to the surprising ending, encountering treachery, triumphs and tragedy along the way. But, through it all, it will be the unceasing ability of the four hunters to rely on each other for their very lives that you'll remember most.

About the Author James Drummond was born in Arlington Heights, IL and graduated from DePauw University with a bachelor's degree in English writing. A lifelong horror fan, he's attempting to put a new spin on familiar folklore with his Shadow Tales series.

Vampirely Riveting By Rhona Sera If the supernatural is your thing, then you will love this third installment on the adventures of youthful Toby and his international team of monster hunters. In this story, Toby's girlfriend Rachel comes along to hunt down destroy the large nest of vampires who have terrorized and subjugated a small village in Scotland with the intention of finding safety from the world's ever-encroaching technology and anti-vampire sentiment. Toby, Rachel and their team of hunters possess magical powers, bravery and the appropriate weapons including ironwood stakes and silver bullets, to release the townspeople from the vampires' tyranny and terror -- if they survive the confrontation, that is. I don't recommend reading it right before going to bed, however!

Crockett Great tool to keep from creating your own drug cards but they do not contain Class or onset of the drug, and the dosages vary greatly from other sources used in my class. So in the end I had to end up writing my own up anyway. Also they are missing about 15% of the drugs listed in our states protocols. So as long as you are planning on using this as a complimentary study tool, not your main study source, then you will be fine.

Adkins The box this product is in is so horribly made it's a miracle it arrived at all. This was no fault of the seller but rather Mosby's fault. They have an extremely flawed box design. The number of cards weighs so much that it over stresses the VERY Flimsy container. Mosby needs to redesign the container. My suggestion for Mosby would be to throw out the original Cardboard box and upgrade it to a plastic notecard box. The cards are nice but some are far above the national standard with too much fluff. Don't waste your money. There is a lot of information missing too. I would advise you to use quizzlets or write them out the traditional way. Don't waste your money!

It's a great study tool By Heather M It's easy to use with colored sections and a binding ring to bind a section makes it really handy instead of taking the whole box you can just take the section you are studying. There's about 90-95 drugs that I didn't have and it's all in one organized box.

Wu For the most part, this review book provides a good way to see whether or not you actually absorbed the material in Gray's for Students and can take that information to apply them to USMLE-style questions. The sections are divided like the Gray's textbook (Back, limbs, abdomen, etc). Each section has between 100-200 challenging board-style questions, some with accompanying images. Consequently, this book is very time-consuming and often times you will come across a question that really can't be answered by the information contained in the Gray's chapters alone. I find that supplementing Gray's with BRS Anatomy makes answering these questions and mastering the information a lot easier. Time-wise, you're probably looking at 3+ hours going through one section's questions and reading every word of the answers in the back of the book. You will find that some of the answers in the back of the book cite an incorrect page reference (especially in the abdomen portion of this review book). This can be very frustrating since you don't know exactly what pages the question was derived from and a lot of times, I simply gave up trying to find the corresponding textbook pages. You should also know that the Gray's textbook really doesn't go into as much detail as these review questions. For some of the questions, you'll have to consult another resource to really understand why a certain choice is the correct answer (BRS, Moore's Clinical Anatomy, etc).I subtracted one star for having numerous incorrect page references and another star for stating some iffy answers (wrong according to some anatomists). Overall, this review book is a good resource to have in preparation for an anatomy exam although BRS will probably be immensely more helpful in your studies.

Good clinical anatomy questions seem isolated to BRS board reviews. Not in this case. This one really preps well for those less board-related questions we encounter in lecture exams. Grab it in the library or just buy it here, but get it.

Ahmad As a first year medical student, it is quite a challenge to figure out which resources to use to study for exams. After attending lectures and studying my notes, this book was a great way to test my understanding of the material in preparation for my examinations. The explanations for each questions actually end up providing an excellent source to review the material presented in class. Although a bit challenging, the book provides a good example of the types of questions we might get on the USMLE exam.
