1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nothing compares! By Amazon Customer I bought this bible for my fiancé and we love it!!!! The words are big enough to read and the bible lays flat so you don't have to hold the pages down to read it. I actually like this bible so much that I am thinking about getting one for myself even though it's a "man's" bible. I've looked everywhere for another bible like this one and nothing compares! I would recommend this bible to anyone.

Besides that it has very precise explainationsat the bottom of just about every chapter. I highly recommend this Bible for every man that wants an understanding of what the man's role in this ever changing world of ours.

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A clearly written comprehensive D750 guide spoiled (for me) by the very light and indistinct font the publisher used. By Charles W. Long I would be happy to give the book 5 stars if I could read it without using a magnifying glass. It is not that the print is too small, but the font used for the major amount of the text is so light or faint that my tired old eyes need a lot of help reading it. The book has an adequate index which, surprisingly is printed in a bolder font that is quite readable. There are many examples of photographs which illustrate in a supportive way the advice the author is advocating. As I looked up a number of topics I was most interested in I found the presentation of the information to be very well done and clearly understandable. By the samples of topics that I struggled to read I am convinced that the book is indeed a comprehensive guide. If it was available in Kindle I think I would be able to easily read it on my big Samsung Tablet, but alas, it is not available. If your eyesight is good enough to read the faint print I then recommend it highly without other reservation.

In a loose style, the writing is refreshing and conjures images in one's mind of just how dire the situation is for the characters.Certain things are left to the imagination such as the time period. Ships that sail suggest an historic setting. In my opinion, this only adds to the misty bleakness that the story tells. It leaves the reader longing for the next in the series.

After the Holocaust's near complete destruction of European Yiddish cultural centers, the Yiddish language was largely viewed as a remnant of the past, tragically eradicated in its prime. In Survivors and Exiles: Yiddish Culture after the Holocaust, Jan Schwarz reveals that, on the contrary, Yiddish culture in the two and a half decades after the Holocaust was in dynamic flux. Yiddish writers and cultural organizations maintained a staggering level of activity in fostering publications and performances, collecting archival and historical materials, and launching young literary talents.

Schwarz traces the transition from the Old World to the New through the works of seven major Yiddish writers-including well-known figures (Isaac Bashevis Singer, Avrom Sutzkever, Yankev Glatshteyn, and Chaim Grade) and some who are less well known (Leib Rochman, Aaron Zeitlin, and Chava Rosenfarb). The first section, Ground Zero, presents writings forged by the crucible of ghettos and concentration camps in Vilna, Lodz, and Minsk-Mazowiecki. Subsequent sections, Transnational Ashkenaz and Yiddish Letters in New York, examine Yiddish culture behind the Iron Curtain, in Israel and the Americas. Two appendixes list Yiddish publications in the book series Dos poylishe yidntum (published in Buenos Aires, 1946-66) and offer transliterations of Yiddish quotes.

Survivors and Exiles charts a transnational post-Holocaust network in which the conflicting trends of fragmentation and globalization provided a context for Yiddish literature and artworks of great originality. Schwarz includes a wealth of examples and illustrations from the works under discussion, as well as photographs of creators, making this volume not only a critical commentary on Yiddish culture but also an anthology of sorts. Readers interested in Yiddish studies, Holocaust studies, and modern Jewish studies will find Survivors and Exiles a compelling contribution to these fields.

Delia and Dray Prescot have abdicated the throne of Vallia and now seek to make the dream of a united Paz come true. Shadows over Kregen Whether Prescot is battling slavers and freeing slaves with the Kroveres of Iztar, or fighting Fish-heads in the land of the Shanks, he is certain to be thrown into more headlong adventures under the streaming mingled lights of the Suns of Scorpio. Murder on Kregen A new page turns in the unruly life of Dray Prescot, and all his strengths and inner resources will be required to confront fresh problems and perils. Of course, as is the nature of Kregen, they face unexpected peril... Turmoil on Kregen The undead monster called the Spectre has been destroyed. Didi herself lies seriously injured in Zandikar in the Eye of the World, lovingly tended by her cousin, Princess Velia. By Harry A Pierce Fast 5 read of the last three books of the epic Kregen Series:Shadows over Kregen (Dray Prescot Book 50) (Kindle Edition)Sword/Sorcery/Higher? action adventure confronting the feared Snake-head Invaders of PazFast 5 adventure/action read. Written as an independent book out of cycle this is the farthest from his home in Valka that that Dray Prescot has adventured to the far side of Kregen and isles of the Schan diffs. An exuberant adventure with a slightly tempered bellicosity of Dray against the machinations of the Star Lords who both transport him under the sea and to the fish diff continents. With shivers of dread the reader follows him through a very passable mission there to free two people of importance to the Star Lords. The end is simply spectacular to those who have read the series. It should be noted that Bulmer hated slavery more than any writer of fiction and his work is a stark counterpoint to the John Norman Gor series.. Excellent adventure read. Highly recommended. Thanks, Harry!Murder on Kregen (Dray Prescot Book 51) (Kindle Edition) Emperor or Pawn of the Star Lords - still have to go after the bad guysFast 5 read, but suffers from being an entry to a story cycle and thus has a lot of story prep embedded in it. Whether you are an Emperor or pawn life is a process of the good, bad, and mundane. Story is very YA, but haw exciting elements with a lot of the supernatural thrills masked for later stories to unravel. Written for the German reader market and thus short in length and action driven. Highly recommended. Thanks, Harry!Turmoil on Kregen (Dray Prescot Book 52)Solely for Adventure and Gold the finding of the sinews of life's SurpriseFast 5 read delving into the affairs of Emperors to-be and the machinations of mankind. A bittersweet tale of the failings of pride and warrior and the falling into common patterns of life when a land is NO longer continually threatened. An enjoyable adventure read which leaves the reader to continue the tale/s. NOT the grand ending that was written for the series numerous times before, but a Skilly wending of a tale of future adventure left to those would trod the sward under Two Suns. Highly recommended. Thanks, Harry! Most often the last tale of a series is an awesome daring do that ensnarls the reader in heroic saga, but this was a crafty salute to the reader's and their imagination to continue the dynamic Kregen Universe. The author wafted the reins of the storyline to his readers as a feather released into the winds, let your imagination guide your quests and the spoils and tribulations of adventuring will be yours.Highly recommended cycle and series! Thanks, Harry!Dray Prescot and Alan Burt Akers and Kenneth Bulmer forever! H!

Now a New York Times bestseller!

Winner of a 2015 Prose Award!

There is a Threat Lurking Online with the Power to Destroy Your Finances, Steal Your Personal Data, and Endanger Your Life.

In Spam Nation, investigative journalist and cybersecurity expert Brian Krebs unmasks the criminal masterminds driving some of the biggest spam and hacker operations targeting Americans and their bank accounts. Tracing the rise, fall, and alarming resurrection of the digital mafia behind the two largest spam pharmacies-and countless viruses, phishing, and spyware attacks-he delivers the first definitive narrative of the global spam problem and its threat to consumers everywhere.

Blending cutting-edge research, investigative reporting, and firsthand interviews, this terrifying true story reveals how we unwittingly invite these digital thieves into our lives every day. From unassuming computer programmers right next door to digital mobsters like "Cosma"-who unleashed a massive malware attack that has stolen thousands of Americans' logins and passwords-Krebs uncovers the shocking lengths to which these people will go to profit from our data and our wallets.

Not only are hundreds of thousands of Americans exposing themselves to fraud and dangerously toxic products from rogue online pharmacies, but even those who never open junk messages are at risk. As Krebs notes, spammers can-and do-hack into accounts through these emails, harvest personal information like usernames and passwords, and sell them on the digital black market. The fallout from this global epidemic doesn't just cost consumers and companies billions, it costs lives too.

Fast-paced and utterly gripping, Spam Nation ultimately proposes concrete solutions for protecting ourselves online and stemming this tidal wave of cybercrime-before it's too late.

"Krebs's talent for exposing the weaknesses in online security has earned him respect in the IT business and loathing among cybercriminals... His track record of scoops...has helped him become the rare blogger who supports himself on the strength of his reputation for hard-nosed reporting." -Bloomberg Businessweek

Review "Armed with reams of information sent to him by feuding hackers and cybercrooks, Krebs explores just how and why these spammers get away with so much...By exposing our digital weaknesses and following the money, he presents a fascinating and entertaining cautionary tale. Krebs's work is timely, informative, and sadly relevant in our cyber-dependent age." - Publishers Weekly"Krebs' guided tour of the cybercriminal underworld is a cautionary tale about menacing cultures of hackers, spammers and duplicitous digital network 'cybercrooks...' an eye-opening, immensely distressing expose on the current state of organized cyberspammers. Chapter 1 PARASITE

The navy blue BMW 760 nosed up to the crosswalk at a traffic light in downtown Moscow. A black Porsche Cayenne pulled alongside. It was 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 2, 2007, and the normally congested streets adjacent to the storied Sukharevskaya Square were devoid of traffic, apart from the tourists and locals strolling the broad sidewalks on either side of the boulevard. The afternoon sun that bathed the streets in warmth throughout the day was beginning to cast long shadows on the street from the historic buildings nearby.

The driver of the BMW, a notorious local scam artist who went by the hacker nickname "Jaks," had just become a father that day, and Jaks and his passenger had toasted the occasion with prodigious amounts of vodka. It was the perfect time and place to settle a simmering rivalry with the Porsche driver over whose ride was faster. Now each driver revved his engine in an unspoken agreement to race the short, straight distance to the big city square directly ahead.

As the signal flashed green, the squeal of rubber peeling off on concrete echoed hundreds of meters down in the main square. Bystanders turned to watch as the high-performance machines lurched from the intersection, each keeping pace with the other and accelerating at breakneck speed.

Roaring past the midpoint of the race at more than 200 kilometers per hour, Jaks suddenly lost control, clipping the Porsche and careening into a huge metal lamp post. In an instant, the competition was over, with neither car the winner. The BMW was sliced in two, the Porsche a smoldering, crumpled wreck close by. The drivers of both cars crawled and limped away from the scene, but the BMW's passenger-a promising twenty-three-year-old Internet entrepreneur named Nikolai McColo-was killed instantly, his almost headless body pinned under the luxury car.

"Kolya," as McColo was known to friends, was a minor celebrity in the cybercriminal underground, the youngest employee of a family-owned Internet hosting business that bore his nickname-McColo Corp. At a time when law-enforcement agencies worldwide were just waking up to the financial and organizational threats from organized cybercrime, McColo Corp. had earned a reputation as a ground zero for it: a place where cybercrooks could reliably set up shop with little worry that their online investments and schemes would be discovered or jeopardized by foreign law-enforcement investigators.

At the time of Kolya's death, his family's hosting provider was home base for the largest businesses on the planet engaged in pumping out junk email or "spam" via robot networks. Called "botnets" for short, these networks are collections of personal computers that have been hacked and seeded with malicious software-or "malware"-that lets the attackers control the systems from afar. Usually, the owners of these computers have no idea their machines have been taken hostage.

Nearly all of the botnets controlled from McColo were built to blast out the unsolicited junk spam advertisements that flood our inboxes and spam filters every day. But the servers at McColo weren't generating and pumping spam themselves; that would attract too much attention from Internet vigilantes and Western law-enforcement agencies. Instead, they were merely used by the botmaster businesses to manipulate millions of PCs scattered around the globe into becoming spam-spewing zombies.

By the time paramedics had cleared the area of Kolya's accident, gruesome images of the carnage were already being uploaded to secretive Russian Internet forums frequented by McColo's friends and business clients.... This was a major event in the cybercrime underworld.

Days later, the motley crew of Moscow-based spammers would gather to pay their last respects at his service. The ceremony was held at the same church where Kolya had been baptized less than twenty-three years earlier. Among those in attendance were Igor "Desp" Gusev and Dmitry "SaintD" Stupin, coadministrators of SpamIt and GlavMed, until recently the world's largest sponsors of spam1-and two figures that will play key roles in this book.

Also at the service was Dmitry "Gugle" Nechvolod, then twenty-five years old and a hacker who was closely connected to the Cutwail botnet. Cutwail is a massive crime machine that has infected tens of millions of home computers around the globe and secretly seized control over them for sending spam. To this day, Cutwail remains one of the largest and most active spam botnets-although it is almost undoubtedly run by many different individuals now (more on this in Chapter 7, "Meet the Spammers").

So why is it important to note these three men's presence at such a momentous event for cybercrime? Because their work (as well as Kolya's and hundreds of others) impacts every one of us every day in a strange but seriously significant way: spam email.

Indeed, spam email has become the primary impetus for the development of malicious software-programs that strike computers like yours and mine every day-and through them, target our identities, our security, our finances, families, and friends. These botnets are virtual parasites that require care and constant feeding to stay one step ahead of antivirus tools and security firms who work to dismantle the networks.

This technological arms race requires the development, production, and distribution of ever-stealthier malware that can evade constantly changing antivirus and anti-spam defenses. Therefore, the hackers at the throttle of these massive botnets also use spam as a form of self-preservation. The same botnets that spew plain old spam typically are used to distribute junk email containing new versions of the malware that helps spread the contagion. In addition, spammers often reinvest their earnings from spamming people in building better, stronger, and sneakier malicious software that can bypass antivirus and anti-spam software and firewalls. The spam ecosystem is a constantly evolving technological and sociological crime machine that feeds on itself.

Given the increasing menace of spam email and related cybersecurity assaults that directly affect consumers and companies (like the major news story I broke to the media in December 2013 about the Target credit-card database breach-a cyberattack that compromised millions of Americans' financial information and forced an even greater number of us to get new credit cards), you may be wondering why governments, law-enforcement officials, and corporations aren't taking a stronger and more significant stance to stop the tidal wave of spam and cybercrime impacting us all.

Part of the reason is that many policymakers and cybercrime experts tend to dismiss spam as a nuisance problem that can be solved or at least mitigated to a manageable degree by the proper mix of technology and law enforcement. For many of the rest of us, spam has become almost the punch line of a joke, thanks to its close association with male penile-enhancement pills and erectile dysfunction medications such as Viagra and Cialis. We assume that if we don't open the emails or don't purchase anything from them, we aren't affected.

Unfortunately, that attitude underscores a popular yet fundamental miscalculation about the threat that spam poses to every one of us.

There are competitors, partnerships, even contests for most responses. Incredibly (to us), spam delivered in Russia actually offers links to spamming services at the bottom of the spam, so that your business too, can benefit. The drug spam industry is financed by American consumers, who want to save money, avoid going to doctors, or even deal prescription drugs to others. The spammers fill a genuine void and satisfy a genuine demand in a twisted healthcare system. This is the story that Brian Krebs reveals, in dramatic, fascinating and fine detail. The online “pharmacies” contract with fabs in India and China, just like the majors do. Goods are shipped by them directly to the customer. Refunds are easier to obtain than from US firms, because the spammers don’t want their card processors to fine them or cut them off. And better customer service leads to reorders (!). And if they don’t, aggressive outbound telemarketing takes over. They have supply chains, with acquirers of botnets, renters of botnets, pharmacies, affiliate programs and spammers – all getting a cut of the transaction or an upfront fee. So very few get crazy rich. Some had to take legitimate day jobs to make ends meet. Eventually, those legitimate tech jobs became more attractive than the dark ones, so recruiting became a problem. Truly, a parallel universe. The drug spam segment is in clear decline:1) The Achilles Heel of the spammers is that they are not totally vertical. They can collect e-mail addresses, they can create botnets, they can accept and fulfill orders. But they can’t process payment. So credit card companies and Microsoft have gone after banks, card processors and transfer agents, making business impossible for the drug spammers. They built their own universe with their own rules, but stopped short. Eventually, it had to collapse.2) The other weak link is Russia, which harbored them. How long that would last was always questionable, but Russia is so corrupt that spammers bribed officials to investigate and close down their competitors. It was a war of attrition where eventually everyone had to lose. Overall, it was a self-inflicted, two pronged attack – on itself. And it’s not all a semi-legitimate economy. They also evolved from scareware (your computer is not safe) to ransomware (all your files are now encrypted). And there’s the constant selling of personal information.Krebs follows a cast of kingpins through their rise and fall. It’s a passion that cost him his career at the Washington Post, which changed “policy” so he could no longer publish his blockbuster stories. (Krebs had been the reason for the crippling and shutdown of major botnets, himself) He has kept going, following through to the end of the kingpins’ rule, and ends the book with tips on not just how, but why you need to protect your accounts. It’s all chilling and gripping, and unfortunately real.David Wineberg

A Detailed Chronicle of the Spam and Illegal Pharmaceutical Online Scammers By Bassocantor SPAM NATION is a detailed chronicle of the spam and illegal pharmaceutical online scammers that plague the internet. The author explains that a large proportion of the pharma spam originates from really just a few individuals in Russia. The author includes a very useful "Who's Who" in the cyberworld section, right at the beginning of this book. It explains who the main players are in the span and pharma schemes.Much of the book discusses the competing criminal networks in Russia, and how these gangs try to thwart each other. Sometimes they expose their competitors private information to the authorities, hoping the police will take down the opposition. Eventually, many of these criminals would end up being arrested and many will have to serve at least a few years in prison. The author spends a lot of time explaining the schemes of "botnets," which are networks of rogue computers controlled by the bot masters. The criminals use these to steal information, send out billions of spam, or even hijack the computer and hold it for ransom until the owner pays a fine. The botnet armies can be extremely powerful and damaging to the public. There was some online chats that were leaked, showing how the criminals actually use these botnet armies: "They were using their armies to bludgeon someone or something offline that threatened to kill their criminal operations. Very often, rival spammers would turn their digital armaments on one another."For me, the most interesting part of SPAM NATION were the chapters describing the financial processing--that is, how the criminals manage to charge your credit card. A set of researchers--some associated with Cal Berkeley, set up test credit card accounts, which they used to buy some counterfeit pharmaceuticals. Then, they would endeavor to track down which banks were actually processing the customers' credit cards. They discovered that there were only a handful of banks that were involved. One researcher was especially clever, in that he simply called around credit card companies, until he found some executives that would cooperate with this investigation. The researchers discovered that the spammers were very careful about screening credit cards that might just be traps. As a result of this investigation, the credit card processing companies were pressured into more vigilantly enforcing the rules. This also caught the attention of Congress. The author describes one bizarre adventure, which he calls, taking an "icebreaker cruise," to Russia to meet with one of the most notorious scammers in the entire world. It was an unpleasant trip, encountering shady people in scary places. The author states that he was actually afraid to meet with some of the other criminals behind these schemes.√ All in all, SPAM NATION is an interesting read. It exposes the magnitude of these nefarious scams, as well as the intricacies of the serpentine network behind these scammers. I thought the text dragged a bit in the sections discussing all of the Russian operatives, but in general, SPAM NATION is a very interesting (and a bit, scary) read. Recommend!Review copy courtesy of the distributor.

I really enjoy Kreb's insight into cybercrime By ABP TLDR - fascinating topic by a very knowledgeable author, but not well executed or well written.I am a regular reader of krebsonsecurity.com, and will continue to be. I really enjoy Kreb's insight into cybercrime, and the revelations about technology and society that come with it. My appreciation for his blog made me excited to read his book, but unfortunately it came up short. There were many interesting facts, but it was as if he didn't have a clear vision of what he was synthesizing them for. The tone of the writing was very inconsistent. Sometimes it reads like a pulp spy novel, sometimes a memoir, sometimes an academic paper. Events that don't seem very dramatic are dramatized at length, and other fascinating tidbits are mentioned but not followed up. This confusion about intent and audience makes for a very jarring read. Sometimes technical terms are insufficiently defined. Other terms are unnecessarily defined and explained many times in the book. The structure of the book doesn't suit the topic. He frequently refers the reader to other parts of the book, yet it isn't apparent why the information is in the other part of the book rather than where he mentions it by reference.

From the author of the critically acclaimed Eladria comes a visionary new fantasy/sci-fi thriller. Lasandria. An ancient civilisation, consigned to oblivion by the greed and power-lust of its own people. The coming apocalypse heralds a new evil that will ravage the world of Alanar for an entire age. Yet on the eve of Lasandria's destruction, the ethereal overseers of the mortal realm grant a dispensation--a promise of hope for the future.  That hope lies with an orphaned teenager named David, born some ten thousand years later; a boy whose isolated and uncertain existence leads him on a journey upon which hinges the fate of not just his world, but countless others.  On the run from a brutal military force, David's quest is one born of shattered dreams and tainted by the thirst for revenge. As an inter-dimensional war that has been waged since the beginning of time threatens to consume his world, the dark force that destroyed Lasandria lurks in the shadows, ready to take possession of the one thing that will either save or destroy Alanar--David.

It comes as no surprise to this fan of MacKay's work to once again be astounded at the quality and vibrancy of his work.Whether there is danger tension drama excitement he masters them all in his writing. But it is the smaller things that really stand out. Such as the nuances of expression in his dialogue between his characters.David, the protagonist is written beautifully his character leaps off the page at you as a person you believe to be real. His emotions and feelings are exactly those experienced by a young man growing up with adoptive parents. He is thrust into a world of change upon meeting a stranger and his life would never be the same again from that moment on. Danger lurks at every corner and an enemy hellbent on finding the Key of Alanar seek to destroy him and all that he knows.I don't want to say too much for fear of spoiling the story for others, but it is just a dammed good read with direct correlation of characters and events from his previous books. It all ties in beautifully.I know it is said too often, but this really is a page turner. I quite literally could not put it down save for tiredness and it was great to see that MacKay has once again surpassed even himself and his own mastery this is one book you must readMacKay deserves to be recognised for what he is, a world-class writer and I would love to see his work hit the number one best selling chart.

He’s always known he was different from the other inhabitants. He is still shocked when he learns he is a foundling from the mainland. His father dies as a result of Davidson actions, but at the same time he gains a mentor in a.stranger to the island named Janir. Years later on his nineteenth birthday David is given an amulet. That moment touches off a streaming events which destroy his home and send him into the world with a motley band to save not just the world, but the universe. The Key of Alanar is a rare book, it is a story with an underlying message yet doesn’t allow the message to get in the way of the story. David is a very complex character and is superbly drawn. His companions, aside from Janir are not as filled out, but they too develop three days through the course of the book. The Key of Alanar is a first book in a series, but has a satisfying ending which still points us to the next installment. I recommend this book for people who enjoy sci fi and fantasy as it has elements of both.

Interesting and exciting spiritual quest and adventure By Phoenix I feel honored that I got an email from the author, who had researched people who reviewed similar books to his and he emailed me. He asked me if I would review his book in exchange for a free book. I just finished it. It is a YA fantasy (older than 16 I figure) and has some very interesting ideas on the spiritual nature of man. Like the dual nature of the physical and spiritual universes. And that beings are immortal and bodies are just a temporary place to inhabit. Good stuff. However, I am giving it 4 stars only because of personal preference. I find that in YA books, young people expect a goodly amount of emotional angst, which after a while starts to annoy me. Like in the Twilight series. I wanted to slap the heroine after a while. Just get it together, chick. Stop moaning and whining. Know what I mean? Seems it is expected in YA books. Same thing in the bestseller Beautiful Creatures. However, that aside, is a really good story and well worth reading. You won't forget it soon, that's for sure. It is a saga with a nail biter kind quest not just about beating the bad guys, but a very spiritual adventure. Check it out. Definitely in the Visionary/Metaphysical genre.

You could certainly write in this log directly, but I used it as a guide to create my own tracking worksheets on the computer. This allows me to continue to reference the examples without having to look at my scribbling. The log is also great quick reference tool for planing your workouts based on information from the Training for the New Alpinism book. The information needed is easier to find in the log, apposed to searching through the whole Training for the New Alpinism book.

This Training Log is so much more than just a logbook to record your training. It is meant to be used hand in hand with "Training for the New Alpinism", by House/Johnston. After reading Training for the New Alpinism and imagining a goal worthy of structured training, you are ready to grab this training log and work backwards to where you are right now. The training log is organized in an efficient way with ample notes before each training period. It's also very handy to have page references back to Training for the New Alpinism for further reading or more clarification. The training log isn't just for cutting-edge Alpinists either. Even a trip up the DC on Rainier should be planned out using this training log. It's pages are formatted to include Mountaineering and technical Alpinism training input.I was happy to see the Transition Period in the training log. I was worried that the log would be mainly for the Base, Specific, Taper and Peak periods since the Transition Period is mainly a break-in period before the "real" training starts. As stated though, it's an important period to get into athlete mode and ensure that you are fit enough to train. The actual training log pages where you record your planned training are much more evolved than the logbook pages in TFTNA. You plan out two weeks and write that. Then when you complete the training, you have a separate space to write the actual training performed. There are friendly prompts on each logbook page to remind you of important details such as training volume, sets and reps, and cragging goals. The training log also has a great Appendix where important information on training the different forms of strength is condensed and consolidated. The final pages are for a reference diagram of Scott's Killer Core Routine. I had written the routine on 3x5 note cards, but it's really nice to have a visual cue of each exercise. If you have started training using the principles in Training for the New Alpinism or if you are looking to start, this training log will be an essential part of success. I have used a spiral notebook for years, but this will be the replacement. As the preface says, "Go simply. Train smart. Climb well."

An Excellent Tool for the New Alpinist By Lee Holt Even though I had read Training for the New Alpinism several times, I kept having questions when it came to actually setting up my training program. As a newcomer to organized training, the learning curve was very steep for me in terms of theory and how to translate it into practice. It seemed like there were so many variables to juggle – endurance, max strength, muscular endurance, skill-specific training, heart rate zones, different types of muscle fibers, etc. I kept modifying the spreadsheets that Steve House posted in his website to account for my specific situation (location, family, work, climbing opportunities), but I was never sure if I was doing it right. The data itself is easy to record, but the format in which you do so is critical because the training builds upon itself. That’s why I’m very excited about the Training Log. When I ordered it, I was concerned that it would just consist of some fancy worksheets with some inspiring quotes. It turns out my expectations were way off the mark.First, the authors have done an excellent job of providing new content that builds upon what you’ve learned from Training for the New Alpinism (TFTNA). They did not copy and paste from the book to the log. When you read the log, you’re getting more practical information on how to craft, implement and evaluate your training regimen. They invite you to ask yourself some very interesting questions regarding your goals, encouraging you to be both inspired and realistic. There is excellent where-the-Vibram-meets-the-trail information about each of the training periods, reminding you of what you’re up to and what challenges you face in the coming weeks. All in all, the content provided in the log further explains the entire training program.Second, the design and layout of the actual training logs is both practical and beautiful (suggestion to Patagonia Books: allow a preview on Amazon). Well-designed icons provide references to TFTNA, explanations of exercises, and reminders about how the current week relates to the prior weeks in terms of training volume. The spacing of the rows and columns allows reasonable space for penciling in your plan and your results, which is important to anyone who has tried to use Excel spreadsheets for workouts (what exactly is the ideal spacing for handwritten notes? I still don’t know). In physical terms, the ring binder is useful, making it easier to turn the pages and also serving as a handy place to stash a mechanical pencil. The cover is made of stiff, reinforced paper, which can probably stand up to getting stashed in your backpack when you head off to work out.Third, there is an appendix that focuses specifically on strength training, a subject that I found slightly confusing as a beginner. The supplemental information in the log answers a lot of my questions about maximum strength versus muscular endurance, and also includes some useful tips about how you’re supposed to feel after both (i.e., don’t blow yourself to bits in the gym or walk your legs to the nubbin on countless water carries, and definitely allow enough time for recovery). In conclusion, if you’re on the fence about whether or not to pony up for the Training Log, I strongly recommend that you go ahead and buy this. It will save you a lot of valuable time during the nuts-and-bolts phase of setting up the plan, taking all of that valuable theory you’ve learned about in TFTNA and putting it into a beautiful, useable, and above all practical format.

Great example of what it might be like By Amazon customer I had the great good fortune to have been able to read this wonderful story as it was being written. A great tale of gritty survival in a world that has left civilization behind, with only a daily struggle for survival remaining. The story is completely plausible and does not 'bend' reality to the will of the writer as some stories do. Real characters, real losses, and a very real struggle to stay alive and have better than a mere day to day existence after civilization as we know it has collapsed.Highly recommended if you enjoy post Apoc drama and action.NCR

An enhanced flu ravaged the world leaving the survivors with little of modern day infrastructure or conveniences. A few families were able to mostly escape this flu from Gilbert's vision of the dying time and move into the mountains. Many years later, the families have settled after surviving nature and man. Rose is a wanderer and was too young to remember the truly difficult times and battles to keep them safe. News of invaders setting up in the nearby valley intrigue her and she goes for a closer look. These invaders believe themselves to be new age Huns, take what they want, make others their slaves, and hold women as possessions. This does not bode well for Rose when she is captured.A captivating read and very difficult to put down after I started. I was anxious for Rose from the start and her attitude greatly differs from the Hun women and what is expected of a female slave. I love the families that have banded together and their support of one another as well as the training they maintain to keep themselves safe.

It was a story of survival and respect for your fellow human. As you are reading, you know it's fiction but this could happen one day. The author knew enough about survival methods to make you really fill like you were with them in the story. I would recommend this book .
