I wanted to read on as the book captures you from the opening pages. It’s gripping and filled with droll humor.It’s a fascinating dual account of a famed century early 1900s British explorer of the Amazon who disappears as those on romantic quests tend to do! He is looking for a fabled lost city, perhaps the clue to the eternal myth of Atlantis. His modern counterpart whose story begins in the 1970s is another Englishmen, who is uneasily fearing he will fall into what we would now call Yuppiedom: house, wife, kids, mundane job, an unexciting, unchallenging life in suburbia.This first part of what one can feel will turn out to be an epic odyssey tracks how the Colonel gets out of his suburban English life and back to his heart’s desire. Meanwhile our more contemporary hero uses luck, magic, mushrooms and his zest to live a life of adventurer to finally break with his comfortable but boring fate in Little England.The book reminds me of a post I saw recently on Facebook: “I wandered so far off the beaten path, that now I don’t know where the f**k I am!!!!” Ah so, that’s where real adventure begins.

By vlad This book allows us to see so called "flower" children of the 60s from the inside, their points of view, their dreams and desires to change the world into a friendly community and at the same time their loneliness. Going in and out of the relationship with no obligation or responsibility, but craving for the sense of purpose. Quest for the colonel Fawcett gives the main character such a purpose. We found it very interesting. Thank you.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sweet romance with Sci-Fi flavor By JD This is not necessarily my normal read - though it's Sci-Fi, which I love, and it has Psis, which I also love. It's more mellow than my usual. It is a slow paced, sweet romance with Sci-Fi elements.R.A. Roque sets up a world that is interesting and thoughtful. There are so many hints to the wider picture, I was dying to know more about, but our focus for this story is really two people - Chad and Yumi. Chad carries an overwhelming flame for Yumi even though they have been separated for years, but Yumi carries a trauma so deep that being touched causes her physical pain.I felt a good connection with the two characters, especially Chad. He was very warm and likeable, someone I would like to know in real life. Yumi's trauma keeps her apart from others and the mystery of it might have kept her apart from me a bit as well. But she's an angry young girl, striking out because of the pain within. I could relate and sympathize with her.The supporting characters Shiv and Gracie were great friends any of us would be happy to have.Chad and Yumi's growth and change are the story, and it feels natural and real. The antagonist is mysterious and subtle.Chad is a bit insecure and unsure of himself. He's the perfect popular guy who doesn't realize his popularity or charm. I was very happy when he stepped up to the challenge and took charge. Yumi's opening and allowing herself to be vulnerable and to trust the people who care about her was quite fulfilling.The angst of being torn apart and facing a heart rending tragedy - which was of a very interesting metaphysical nature - was sad. But the most memorable moments was when Chad decided to enjoy what time he had with Yumi instead of running, and that brought tears to my eyes. The question of "If you only had one day left to live, what would you do." is answered very well here.Yumi's trauma was disturbing - and thankfully not as disturbing as it could have been, I was worried there for a bit - but still, heart rending in a way that any mother or anyone with a mother will immediately feel.I did not really like the ending - it fell a bit flat for me. I would have liked a bit of action to the faceoff, a psionic fight there would have been great. There's this whole universe to explore and they go home? I wish they would have went to the new alien's world - who we were introduced to in such a teasing and fleeting manner! I wanted that to be so much more of the story. Interstellar politics, Human duplicity, dubious organizations that have shady agendas! I hope that R.A. Roque explores that in much more detail in later books!The romance sets up through the whole book, and doesn't consummate until the end. Its a slow burn with very real reasons for the MCs not to physically connect until Yumi's trauma is dealt with. Though there are some steamy hints throughout, the hot stuff is part of the resolution. I'm partial to the hot stuff, which was well done when it was finally presented.The pacing was the main issue for me. Lots of internal ruminations and conflict - which I get, most of the conflict was in the MCs heads - but it made it run a bit slow for me. Yumi & Chad did feel like young adults, with the insecurities and at times misguided confidence that comes with youth.The psionic elements are very intriguing - the idea of using Psis to assist space travel was pretty unique. The internal rooms and landscape for telepathic communication was also well done and interesting. If R.A. Roque takes this storyline and further explores the aliens and politics, further books are definitely on my list.I was provided a copy of this book for an honest review.

Complex characters that evolve throughout the story By Emma Jaye The tale starts with four young adults, all with complex mental powers, who share a deep bond finishing their training in different parts of the galaxy. Yumi is hard as nails, but can't stand being touched due to a childhood trauma. Chad is so compassionate that he has trouble speaking his mind. I liked the fact that this pair have non gendered stereotype behaviours, usually it is the male that is callous, and the female that is overly emotional, but as the story unfolds, the reasons and causes of their behaviour unfold.When Yumi projects herself into Chad's mind, their 'virtual' selves can touch, but neither one wants their relationship to be mental only, besides, the rules say they can't get together, but that is the least of their problems. An alien delegation to Earth and a conspiracy brings things to a head in a suitably dramatic fashion, although aspects of the quartets past are left unsaid, which I'm dying to know.Excellent writing, intriguing, unusual characters and believable world building make this scifi with a central romantic element a winner for me.

A first novel written by a writer whose talent and potential is under development presents a conundrum. In Protect Us by R.A. Roque, a story set in the distant future when travel between galaxies is a routine made possible by wormholes, we can see glimpses of the author’s flair and abilities.From the outset, the writer utilizes a clever and deft technique to overcome the inherent weakness of first person stories: their inability to show the internal thoughts and struggles of characters other than the protagonist. In Protect Us, the chapters alternate between Chad, protagonist 1a, and Yumi, protagonist 1b. Their love for one another is the foundation for the story’s tension, conflict, and drama. It instills in the reader what every author, both beginner and expert, strives mightily to achieve: emotional involvement. You will rage, despair, laugh, sympathize, scorn, grin, roll your eyes, and thrill as the interactions between the two lovers form and shape the plot. An untalented writer will cause a reader to turn the page with great indifference.Moreover, the author achieves what very few first time authors can accomplish: an exceptionally well-edited book (I found no typos and I’m good at it), no misspellings, and near flawless grammar.Unfortunately, the author’s promise and potential, solid though it is, cannot overcome the structural flaws created through inexperience. For example, the author leaps at every opportunity to inject herself into the story. When Chad and Yumi, martial arts experts both, begin a sparring session, Chad observes, “She stepped into a back stance, snapping hands into position and doing that little beckoning thing that Morpheus does to Neo in the movie The Matrix. It was infuriating.” Indeed.Or, when told he will command a Class 4 starship, though he has trained only in Class 2 starships, Chad muses, “A Class 2 starship is like a minivan back on Earth…” Leaving aside that in a universe where wormholes are ubiquitous, a starship would be necessary in the first place, it is doubtful Chad would have any idea what a minivan is. Or who Morpheus is. Today’s youth (God bless them) have no idea what a floppy disk is. Without any foundation or context, only the author can form these analogies and though the story is replete with such intrusions, I limit myself to two for the sake of brevity.The most telling sentence in this book however, is an innocuous one. “You would usually say dating.” It is Yumi’s response to an alien’s incorrect use of ‘mating’. Obviously, the author well understands an alien would not have mastered English’s more subtle nuances. But the distinction does not apply to the story’s humans. They all speak with present day idioms, slang, and pop culture speech patterns. Since we no longer use words like ‘forsooth’ and ‘harken’, I very much doubt the future’s youth will use: cool, get it, frickin, amazing (especially with the ‘so’ preface’), super, awesome, whatever, as if, and wtf (spelled out, of course). Speaking of which, vulgarity, an acceptable literary form when used for emphasis or as a character’s personality, is well within a writer’s prerogative. But in this world, the slightest provocation results in everyone (except the aliens) dropping f-bombs everywhere. It just gets tedious.I am confident in recommending this book to fans of Romance novels enthralled by the emotional ups and downs two people must endure on the road to happiness and love everlasting. The author does a credible job of detailing just that. I also recommend this book to those interested in following the career of a burgeoning novelist or to readers contemplating their first novel. Science fiction enthusiasts may be disappointed as the SF aspect serves only as incidental backdrop, a casual, undeveloped throw-in to the journey of Chad and Yumi.I urge the author to stay the course. Writing is a learnable craft.

By Charles M Gunsaullus The good: this is a very clearly written overview of fiction writing, specifically for writing a novel. It will save beginning writers precious time of searching the internet for fundamentals of getting their novels started. It is also priced very reasonably.The bad: while reasonably priced, the information included is available for free for a moderate effort of searching the internet. Some of the sections are even copied word for word from various sources online. Additionally, the text is in dire need of editing. There are numerous syntax and grammar errors as well as more than a few typos.Without the typos and grammatical errors, I would certainly recommend this for any beginning novelist as there is enough useful information to jump start the writing process.

About the Author

Dr. David Goetsch is a full professor of Quality, Safety, and Business Management.  He is the author of 75 books, six of which have been translated into foreign languages including Korean, Indonesian, Spanish, and Malaysian.  Dr. Goetsch spent ten years in the private sector in quality-related positions before entering higher education full-time.  His other books include Total Quality Handbook, Implementing Total Quality, Understanding ISO 9000 and ISO Standards, Occupational Safety and Health, Basics of Occupational Safety and Health, and Project Management for Engineering and Technology.  

 

Stanley Davis is a former manufacturing executive with Harris Corporation and an adjunct professor of quality.  He is co-author of several other books with Dr. Goetsch including Understanding ISO 9000 and the ISO Standards and Implementing Total Quality.

This book will change your life By Clipboard The Fifth Estate Publishing Co. has a reputation of translating and compiling old texts, ensuring these books would continue to last the test of time. In order to make sure they will last, the public must have access to it in their native tongue. If you go to their website you'll find they are not only working to protect Jewish, Netzari (Nazarene Judaism, Messianic Judaism), Gnostic and early Christian writings, but they are also working on preserving books from the East.They present the facts in detailed introductions of every book in this massive compilation of forgotten scripture. Plus, they include quotes from other verses found in the canonically approved Bible, showing that indeed these lost books inspired what is found in the Bible. For example, The first Book of Enoch is sometimes quoted word-for-word throughout the Hebrew Bible and the writings of Yeshua's Talmidim (Jesus' Disciples). Of curse, you wouldn't know that unless you had access to Enoch 1. From my personal view, Yochanan's (John's) Book of Revelation is actually part two of Enoch 1. Enoch confirms what was seen by Yochanan, two witnesses to the same events (though sometimes described differently).If you are new to discovering the forgotten scriptures, here are a few things you should know:The KJV and NIV Bibles and others like it, are simply incomplete. They are the smallest, most condensed and altered versions you can find. Though the Catholic Bible is not my favorite version (nothing against Catholics), it includes some of the books that are found in this compilation. The next would the Greek Orthodox Bible which contains even more than the Catholic Bible. Ultimately, the Coptic Ethiopian Bible is the largest in the world with a total of 81 books. Don't worry, much of this compilation here on Amazon has the Ethiopic texts that have been concealed and hidden from the Holy Roman Empire - that's why they survived. People fear what they don't understand and book burning was the norm. Instead of reexamining their theology, dogma and interpretations it was more convenient to ban and outlaw books that questioned the status quo. Additionally, there is also the Septuagint. Complied by the Greek Diaspora (Jews living in Greece), it was the first translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek with the Apocrypha. The Psalms of Solomon and the Odes of Solomon are not in this Encyclopedia but can be found in the Septuagint. Some compilations of the Apocrypha are bigger than others - example: The Story of Ahikar and all four Maccabees are not included in this Encyclopedia. (my other copy of the Apocrypha only has the first two Maccabees)If you buy this and wonder "where do I start?", I personally suggest you read the Book of Wisdom (Wisdom of Solomon) first. Before you read it, pray. Pray that G-D will guide you and that He opens your eyes, ears, hearts, minds and souls to see what G-D wants you to see and not dwell on the man-made dogma and traditions of interpreting. Pray that G-D's interpretation and intent of the book is revealed to you. This will only happen if you are willing, if you have a sincere heart you will come to know the Gift of the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding, The Holy Spirit of Instruction and Truth. If you wonder where this incredible title comes from, unfortunately this massive compilation doesn't included every single missing book. It's a great collection, but the search isn't over - far from it. If you can, get a hold of a copy of The Apocryphal New Testament (sacred-texts.com) and read the Mary Hath Chapters and Protevangelion to find where the title comes from.I also suggest getting a copy of the Dead Sea Scrolls, you'll find the War Scroll is found both at Qumran and in the Coptic Ethiopian Bible. The Dead Sea Scrolls back up a lot in the book and vice-versa. If you consider yourself Christian, please find a copy of the Jewish New Testament or the Complete Jewish Bible to expand your understand of Israelite culture and understanding Torah. You cannot understand Yeshua without knowing Torah.Just a warning: If you read Enoch 3, you might be taken off guard. It is a very strange book and should be taken with a grain of salt. If you know anything about Talmud, Kabbalistic and Mystic Gnosticism, that is the relm of this particular text. Personally, I don't take any of those seriously. Talmud is rabbinical commentary and should not be taken 100% serious. Another secret book is the Testament of Solomon which echos the Talmud's claim of how King Solomon was able to control evil spirits with a magic ring to help build the Temple. The Hebrew Bible tells a different story of how the Temple came to be, but believers in Jewish Mysticism consider this fact. I personally don't by it for a minute, how could a Holy Temple be built by Holy Angels and evil spirits? A house divided against itself cannot stand, right? However, a counter point would be this - the Temple was built by both good and evil, which is why G-D allowed it to be destroyed as Yeshua predicted it would. Bare in mind that if you choose to get a copy of the Dead Sea Scrolls there are two things to look out for: The Watchers and the Shoddy Wall Builders. The Watchers are the fallen angels who laid with daughters of man and had offspring, the Nephilim. Note: The fallen angels and demons are not the same, demons are the souls of the Nephilim who past away in Noah's flood. In my mind the phrase "Shoddy Wall Builders" brings Freemasonry to mind. They do in fact claim to be the builders of Solomon's Temple, but "Shoddy" implies bad or fake. I'll stop there are let you think on your own about all of that. It's a lot to take in, go slow.This turned out longer than expected, but before I post there's one final thing:I mentioned there were other books to be found, if you would like to preview some of them before buying a hard copy there is a website called sacred-texts.com this is a free source to everything you could possibly imagine.Here's a quick review of books you might think about purchasing: The Encyclopedia of Lost and Rejected Scriptures: The Pseudepigrapha and Apocrypha, The Septuagint, The Aprocryphal New Testiment, The Dead Sea Scrolls, The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible, The Coptic Ethiopian Bible (if you can find it), The Greek Orthodox and Catholic Bibles (for cross referencing), The Jewish New Testament, The Complete Jewish BibleHopefully this review proves helpful to someone, happy hunting - always search for truth. By railfan First of all, let me say that this book in no way replaces the Bible, but rather adds to it, magnifies it, and gives you a greater depth of understanding. It has many Books that are mentioned in Biblical texts but were not, until now, available to research and study. An example of this is the Book of Jasher, which is mentioned in two books of the Bible; 2 Samuel and Joshua. With this text, you have the Book of Jasher before you to study and learn what the other books referred to. It also has the additions to the Book of Esther, which fill in some ambiguous parts of the text we are used to. For example, it expands on Mordecai's overhearing of the plot to harm King Xerxes and why Haman became jealous of Mordecai. It goes into detail of Esther's prayer to the Lord, and how the king came to hear her story.It also has the Apocryphal Books which can only add to one's understanding of how God worked with His people. The Book of the Maccabees not only explain the origins of Channukah, but also tell of the careful hiding of the Ark of the Covenant. (Sorry, Indy.)I truly recommend this text for anyone who really wants to seriously learn a bit more about the Bible and of the times it was written, both old and new testaments. You will definitely get your money's worth from this book.

I was looking for a single book to start my research endeavor into the rejected books of the bible - books that were not deemed "acceptable" to be placed in the Christian version for whatever reason the Council of Nicea decided these books were deemed unworthy. Some rejected books were burned and sadly we will never know what books actually existed but this is a well translated and well thought out compilation of those that were not destroyed. I am very happy I started my research with this book.

True story of an arctic expedition in 1913 that got locked in by ice; the boat sank, and this is the story of the Captain's efforts to get safety for the survivors; it includes the story of how they were able to set up a "survivor's camp" on the ice, regroup, get to a small island some 30 miles away, and, most incredibly, how the Captain and an Eskimo trekked 700 miles to Siberia for help. Harrowing and amazing.

Think Lawrence in the sand storm in Lawrence of Arabia By Common Sense The book is very good in the beginning but it tends to drag (kind of like Lawrence's trek on the camel in a sand storm towards the end of the movie Lawrence of Arabia). Up until the point he heads for the mainland, it is amazing what these polar explorer put up with.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Great New Cookbook By Kristen Straight Up Tasty is the new cookbook written by Adam Richman, of Man vs. Food fame. If you never saw the show before, it was a show that featured Adam traveling around and trying to conquer the biggest or more unique food challenges he could find. While the show is no longer on the air, Adam still loves food and it shows with his new cookbook.Adam begins by stating that he is not a chef - but he knows and loves food. For that reason, he decided to write a cookbook with recipes he cooks at home or has developed that were inspired by his travels. These recipes are down to earth with ingredients that all kitchens have - or can easily find. That's the kind of cookbook I enjoy!The cookbook has recipes for breakfast, lunch, snacks and small plates, dinner, side dishes and condiments, and of course, sweets. I have a long list of recipes I want to try from all of the sections, but the first up ones are these.Both his recipes for Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and Oatmeal Pancakes sound simple and delicious. I love the idea of Tortilla Soup with Guacamole Wontons! Brilliant. Along similar lines, his recipe for Creamy Tomato Soup with Grilled Cheese Sandwich Dumplings sounds like a winner for winter nights.Straight Up Tasty is the perfect combination of straight forward recipes, enticing pictures, and short stories that explain how and why these recipes came about. If you're looking for a cookbook written by someone who truly loves good food, check out Adam's new cookbook. Not that this is particularly a bad thing. I came to this book with no preconceived notions as to who he was, what he cooked, or where he had been. In short, a pair of fresh eyes looked at this book and liked what they saw.Adam Richman is a traveling TV foodie who offers up an quite an eclectic collection of culinary delights in "Straight Up Tasty: Meals, Memories, and Mouthfuls from My Travels." This book features over 100 unique recipes that are a combination of favorites from his family and friends as well as regional and international favorites from his travel experiences from around the world. According to Richman this book is a "road map to great eating." It is also a heck of a lot of fun. With the look and appeal of a personal scrapbook, each recipe contains notes and reminisces on the food as well as interesting facts.I loved the section on "Leftover Holiday Candy" recipes. Who has not found themselves in a spot like this, trying desperately to avoid just diving into the candy and polishing it all off in one swoop? The recipes in this section offer tasty ways to pace yourself while slowly eliminating that excess chocolate baggage.With recipes to suit all tastes and budgets, some of the offerings include: Bacon and Cheddar Frittata, Creamy Tomato Soup with Grilled-Cheese Sandwich Dumplings, Chili-Frito Sloppy Jose with Sliced Avocado and Crunch Pickled Onions, Wild Mushroom Tart, Salted Caramel Candy Apple Tarts, and Oh, Hell Yes Cheesecake (and who does not love that name?)This is a well-organized cookbook with large, colorful photos, and written in a conversational tonal. Nothing just stands on its own By David Wineberg It is always fascinating to read what experts have concluded from a microscopic examination of a work of art. They put things in historical perspective, in biblical context, and find similarities and anomalies, dialectic conundrums, support and contradiction - where I see or hear beauty. So I appreciate the different perspective. This book is the latest collection from Fredric Jameson, as erudite, expert and analytical as any author ever has been. He analyses artists, film directors, novels, films and tv shows. Some of them you’ve even heard of.He follows a dictum of Thomas Mann: “Only the exhaustive is truly interesting.” (He quotes it twice.) These then are substantially all of Jameson’s thoughts on these works, including the references, tangents, asides and free associations. They are piled high and thick.Reading The Ancient and the Postmodern was like stepping into an alternate universe, where nothing was as it seemed to the naked eye and the unsharpened mind. Jameson’s intensive scrutiny is otherworldly and so granular as to be mystifying. Sometimes you no longer remember what was under consideration. It is filled with dense references, facts and mysterious sentences like: “Leitmotif is the scar left by destiny on the musical present.”Jameson’s obvious passion is Wagner and Mahler. Their era redefined music. He has seen their works multiple times, can distinguish different directors’ productions and different performers’ interpretations. He links them to past present and future, moral values, trends, fashions, and the tangents of adaptations. They get about a third of the book.The central theme is: like a black hole at the center of every galaxy, works of art “must have a contradiction at their center in order to win any value.” This colors his approach to everything. Whether or not it is valid is beyond the scope.The irony, if there is one, is that Jameson looks at the macro period from the Baroque to the present in the tiniest micro increments, dwelling on fine details in every medium. Drawing historic conclusions from this approach is impossible.His Marxist credentials are on vivid display, which is the major reason most readers would want this book. But his text is so much more dense than say, the accessible Marxist Slavoj Zizek. It doesn’t inspire further reading. Having read the in-depth appreciations of all these artists and authors, I have no desire to rush out and acquire any of their works, which is normally how my reading branches out. It is nonetheless, a remarkable ride.David Wineberg

By Earl In this work, Fredric Jameson essentially performs a massive compare and contrast exercise between modernism and postmodernism. His examples are examined extensively for locations of a call and respond, a postmodern response to a modernist call.Aside from any overarching thesis in the book, the close readings of the various 'texts', from paintings and music to film, are well worth the time and effort given to them. Jameson is an accessible but not simplistic writer. The book is meant to be a discussion with the reader which means some effort is needed. But with the effort comes new perspectives on works mostly familiar with a few lesser known works thrown in.I will revisit this book again and fully expect to gain new insights yet again.Reviewed from an ARC made available by the publisher via NetGalley.

TrThe good news: any worsted can be used. I mistakenly thought only and mostly tiny round doilies could be made with much work.Thanks.
