Eventually he decided to make his life long passion for art and writing become his way of life. Islandia The Lost Colony is his first science fiction book. A trilogy of international art detective stories is completed and waiting publication. Currently he is writing the sequel for Islandia , which will be published in December 2011. Poor editing distracts, plot lacks By Daniel Cook First, the good: The plot was good enough to goad me to continue reading, if only to see how it might develop. The premise is interesting, if not compelling, but the "fallen humans rediscovering their heritage" theme was MUCH better done in Dan Simmons' "Illium/Olympos" duology.The bad: The EDITING IS HORRIBLE!! Failures of conjugation, tense, incorrect homonyms ("to" instead of "two", etc), and even character names that keep changing ("Big Momma" becomes "Big Mommy" multiple times). I found this so distracting that I almost had to put the book down. The characters are cardboard, with only the protagonist experiencing any growth at all. Unfortunately, that "growth" is incredible--as in there's little credible reason to believe he would develop in the manner described by the mechanisms presented. We are expected to believe that learning to read and re-discovering some basic principles of hydrodynamics, aerodynamics and engineering (with an interest in "law" as well) suddenly turn a simple sailor into a respected leader of men--with no real objections from the community at large. The antagonists are laughably simple, and the leader of the "bad guys" reminds me of Carnegie from "The Book of Eli" (he wants the ancient technology to better rule his "empire"), only without any charm or wit. The book climaxes and concludes far too abruptly and conveniently, as though the author were eager to move on to the next novel--which I suspect he was.Bottom line: You get what you pay for. As this was a free novel, I can honestly say I got my money's worth--and I enjoyed reading it in the same manner that I enjoy watching "B" or even "C" movies. That is, being able to mock the book for its failings was at least as entertaining as the book itself. I will not, however, waste my dollars buying the sequels.

I have to wonder if anyone besides the author did any editing at all. However, contrary to other reviews, I found the story engaging enough to (mostly) overlook the obvious errors and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I will be reading the rest of the collection if it is available for borrowing through Prime. I will not be paying actual money for it.

Multiple uses of "were" when it should be "where". Ripe with misused, misspelled, omitted words that makes the reader have to guess what the storyteller was trying to say or mean. Very disrupting.

About the Author

Trevor Hastie is the John A. Overdeck Professor of Statistics at Stanford University. Prior to joining Stanford University, Professor Hastie worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories, where he helped develop the statistical modeling environment popular in the R computing system. Professor Hastie is known for his research in applied statistics, particularly in the fields of data mining, bioinformatics, and machine learning. He has published five books and over 180 research articles in these areas. In 2014, he received the Emanuel and Carol Parzen Prize for Statistical Innovation. He earned a PhD from Stanford University.

Robert Tibshirani is a professor in the Departments of Statistics and Health Research and Policy at Stanford University. He has authored five books, co-authored three books, and published over 200 research articles. He has made important contributions to the analysis of complex datasets, including the lasso and significance analysis of microarrays (SAM). He also co-authored the first study that linked cell phone usage with car accidents, a widely cited article that has played a role in the introduction of legislation that restricts the use of phones while driving. Professor Tibshirani was a recipient of the prestigious COPSS Presidents’ Award in 1996 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2012.

Martin Wainwright is a professor in the Department of Statistics and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Wainwright is known for theoretical and methodological research at the interface between statistics and computation, with particular emphasis on high-dimensional statistics, machine learning, graphical models, and information theory. He has published over 80 papers and one book in these areas, received the COPSS Presidents’ Award in 2014, and was a section lecturer at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2014. He received PhD in EECS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

By Norm Matloff, University of California at Davis The statistics/machine learning community has been bombarded with so many variants of LASSO, for so many different types of methodology, without any general, unifying treatment of ths subject. The result is more confusion than insight. This book fills that void, and is sure to be much cited as a reference. It will be quite useful to me.

Gutierrez Hastie and Tibshirani are machine learning superstars and I believe this new resource will play an important role in statistical learning just like their previous texts. The timing is perfect for a deep look at the lasso as big data is placing stringent requirements on how enterprise data assets are being used for strategic advantage.

Each chapter illustrates a specific situation and then gives simple explanations and solutions to make sure you are making your wishes known. It tells how to begin conversations with your loved ones so they know exactly what you want. After reading this book I am going to review and revise all my advance directives! And if you have aging parents this would present a wonderful opportunity to begin a conversation with them about their end of life directives and wishes.

Not only does it offer valuable instructions for managing your own health care before the "unexpected" happens, but the author's breezily-narrated case studies make the legal, medical and administrative issues very easy to understand. Her dry and often tongue-in-check sense of humor make this handbook an easy read as well as an essential tool for health care planning.

There are no pictures, it has bad grammar, and it really didn't give me any information other than a bug spray recipe that I might use! If the author is trying to sell a book on indoor gardening, then she better be able to prove that she is successful at it herself by showing some of her own pictures of her success stories! Just telling people to grow tomatoes inside does not cut it for me, anyone could have assumed you need light, a pot of dirt and a plant to grow a tomato, but let us see the proof of her successes!

The most annoying feature is that once engaged in a search, it is not possible to return to a previous location without starting the search all over again. The "back arrow" takes you all the way back to the cover of the book. Also, the "Go To" feature on the menu gives you a number pad so that you must enter the number of the page you want, not the title of the feature,such as "Table of Contents."

Just what I was looking for By e-kitab I am pleased to give five stars to a resource that contains all the features I find useful in a light, compact, and comprehensive companion for Hebrew and Greek Bible reading, as far as is possible on a basic Kindle e-reader. The similar titles I purchased and used before this one became available had serious flaws, such as poor navigation, missing entries, and/or more-or-less sloppy layout. There are other titles that specialize in only the New Testament, which have similar convenient navigation and features, and these made me wish for a resource like this one.Here are some important points to note:- This not only contains a neatly arranged electronic edition of James Strong's original work (a classic, though with its limitations), but also the entries from the so-called "Enhanced Strong's Lexicon" (by Woodside Bible Fellowship of Ontario) that appears in many Bible software suites, often under other elusive names, but with the same entries. These glosses/definitions are drawn from sources more recent and comprehensive sources than that of Strong's (Brown-Driver-Briggs and Thayer, with improvements). Combined with the convenience of Strong's concordance, this is definitely an upgrade over a printed concordance, once you are comfortable with Kindle navigation.- I find it very easy and convenient to navigate, at least on my Kindle. I am able to navigate between books, chapters, and verses as easily as I can on any other well-designed resource. (It could be, too, that I am using an up-to-date edition of the resource).- This is not just for people who prefer the King James Version over other translations, or vice versa. If you have a basic knowledge of Hebrew and Greek, using classic resources and comparing them to modern ones is a valuable exercise in critical thinking, and sharpening one's proficiency in the lexical data of the both Testaments.In sum, if you have a printed Bible in the original languages and would like to have access to a comprehensive concordance with dictionaries, this is worth beyond its low price.

By wijola I got what I was looking for in that this is a bible with words hyperlinked to the dictionary and concordance. Strongs is super useful. What I hadn't realized is that the books themselves are not linked in a table of contents, so you are stuck choosing a testment and flipping book to book. It therefore becomes much less useful if you need, say, the book of Revelations than if you need Matthew 1:1.

A Far Cry from Ludlum's best By Edmund Khoo Taut with international intrigue and frenetic action, Robert Ludlum's novels are generally highly entertaining and rich with suspense. The standard of The Cry of the Halidon, however, is well below his usual.Unlike most of his other books, The Cry of the Halidon is rarely suspenseful and does not build to a recognizable climax. The plot is typical Ludlum fare, with Alexander Tarquin Mcauliff selected by a company, -Dunstone Limited- to head a survey team deep into the Jamaican forests. Minutes after successfully attaining the survey assignment, he is approached by British Intelligence and informed that the motives of Dunstone are far from honest.Naturally, he finds himself involved not only with British Intelligence, Dunstone and the rebel factions of Jamaica but also with a third faction, an organization known only as the "Halidon." While initially this may seem gripping and interesting, the text quickly becomes confused and rambling. With so many hostile organizations and no primary antagonist, it is frequently difficult to comprehend the plot, let alone the actions of the main character.Although the novel does become more interesting at its conclusion, I found The Cry of the Halidon to be ultimately unsatisfying, with its more suspenseful elements overwhelmed by a confusing plot, a sprawling diction and a lackluster climax.

Not what I expected By Asimov A weak story line and a confusing plot ensured that I was complete lost somewhere in the middle of Jamica in the first few chapters.Was disappointing to read this work of Ludlum, who otherwise has had an untarnished reputation so far.

It covers all the basics of the language, but more just as a list of facts. If you know anything about C++ this book won't teach you much new. If you don't know anything about the language, I can't imagine trying to learn it from this. At best it's an OK reference or quick refresher.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. such a small package yet = great knowledge By Denis Wallers I found the book extremely informative and insightful, and it doesn't matter if you are a beginner/novice or you already know a thing or two about programming, this is going to be a welcome edition to your collection as it is well written, structured, and executed in such a fashion that it literally is going to save you money from being spent on "basics" courses and introduction to the world of programming, as it covers all that is needed in such a small package as this one. Spending just a few dollars for the knowledge you gain in return is hell of a bragin in my opinion.

This might be the reason I do not try out other things-things which I see as exhausting and challenging. But with this book, I realized that there are things, such as Programming, that are not what I thought they are. C ++ was a jargon to me, I had totally no idea what it is, how it is made, etc. And so when I tried this book, I got to realize that i was just too afraid to get out of my comfort zone and that this is actually fun and engaging.

About the Author Bonnie F. Fremgen is a former associate dean of the Allied Health Program at Robert Morris College. She has taught medical law and ethics courses as well as clinical and administrative topics. In addition, she has served as an advisor for students’ career planning. She has broad interests and experiences in the health care field, including hospitals, nursing homes, and physicians’ offices.

Dr. Fremgen holds a nursing degree as well as a master’s in health care administration. She received her PhD from the College of Education at the University of Illinois. She has performed postdoctoral studies in Medical Law at Loyola University Law School in Chicago. She has authored five textbooks with Pearson.

Suzanne S. Frucht is an Associate Professor Emeritus of Anatomy and Physiology at Northwest Missouri State University (NWMSU). She holds baccalaureate degrees in biological sciences and physical therapy from Indiana University, an MS in biological sciences at NWMSU, and a PhD in molecular biology and biochemistry from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

For 14 years she worked full-time as a physical therapist in various health care settings, including acute care hospitals, extended care facilities, and home health. Based on her educational and clinical experience she was invited to teach medical terminology part-time in 1988 and became a full-time faculty member three years later as she discovered her love for the challenge of teaching. She taught a variety of courses including medical terminology, human anatomy, human physiology, and animal anatomy and physiology. She received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2003. After retiring from teaching in 2008, she continues to be active in student learning through teaching medical terminology as an online course and writing medical terminology texts and anatomy and physiology laboratory manuals.
