This book is about black holes, one of the most intriguing objects of modern theoretical physics and astrophysics. For many years, black holes have been considered as interesting solutions of the Theory of General Relativity with a number of amusing mathematical properties. Now after the discovery of astrophysical black holes, the Einstein gravity has become an important tool for their study. This self-contained textbook combines physical, mathematical, and astrophysical aspects of black hole theory. Pedagogically presented, it contains 'standard' material on black holes as well as relatively new subjects such as the role of hidden symmetries in black hole physics, and black holes in spacetimes with large extra dimensions. The book will appeal to students and young scientists interested in the theory of black holes.

Review "I am quite enthusiastic about this book, and I cannot wait to buy a copy for myself. It would be fun to teach a graduate course on black holes based on this book ... it has a remarkable breadth, and it strikes an appealing balance between astrophysics, physics, and mathematics of black holes." --Alexander Kusenko, University of California at Los Angeles

There are only screen snaps of the O365 portal and links below each to Microsoft TechNet articles explaining them.--- UPDATE: Removed editorializing regarding the writer's intentions. Apparently there are two versions, the later one containing content as described in the author's summary. As of today, June 27, 2015, a refresh (archive then download again) did not bring me the intended content. In fact, given the author's explanation below, it would seem I keep getting a pre-publication copy where his original chapter intentions, instead of the actual Powershell commands, have links to TechNet articles where perhaps he was going to expand and focus his content. In any event, if I ever do get the content advertised, I will update this review again and reassess the rating, too.

The selected commands are wide ranging and provide a full palate of common administrative needs. The work is perfect for administrators who, like me, understand that knowing where to find the exact answer for specific tasks is often more important and efficient than attempting to keep all of those Cmdlets memorized. The reference guide frees up brain space for the larger picture.

Deep in a hellish real estate fiasco nightmare and plagued with obstacle upon obstacle, Colin and Pam Rath persevered and managed to crawl to safety. It started with obtaining the right from the city to renovate a single-room occupancy rent-controlled "transient hotel" brownstone building and only got worse. From financial problems of a construction project gone haywire to the tune of $13.5 million, to contractor woes, accidents on the construction site, the disaster of a fraudulently installed foundation, falsified reports, a corrupt and antiquated Department of Buildings, political interference, and numerous lawsuits, their real estate project and personal residence was foreclosed, leaving them $13 million in debt. Nevertheless, they continued to hang on to their dreams of Manhattan real estate development and of a global sailing adventure with their children. In a surprising legal development in 2014, their foreclosure was dropped and their multi-million-dollar condo became theirs again, free and clear. The Rath's story of tragedy and triumph will inspire anyone with a dream and prove that the flames of failure don't have to destroy your vision; rather, they can toughen it, like tempered steel.

It Is What It Is: A True Manhattan Real Estate Nightmare With a Silver Lining, by Colin Rath

Review Colin and Pamela Rath...two bold dreamers who quixotically dove headfirst into the rough, often-unforgiving waters of Manhattan Real Estate and were almost drowned. Through a mix of colorful malefactors, historical circumstances, and misguided optimism, that dream goes terribly awry. Or perhaps, it actually yields to the better conclusion that waits beyond the horizon, drifting in a sea of endless possibility. Brian Babst Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker, CorcoranAn inspiring story for those who are determined to succeed. Life does have its twists and turns, however, it is through PERSEVERANCE one achieves their goals. Read It Is What It Is and find your own silver lining. Gregory Griffith President, G&G Global DevelopmentRead It Is What It Is to experience a real life Dickens adventure replete with looming foreclosure, bureaucratic ineptitude, and a hero pushing onward despite everything working against him. Kenneth Gillett Principal, Target Marketing Digital

From the Inside Flap Pam and Colin Rath, a young Manhattan couple swept up in the housing bubble, borrow a small fortune to build a cutting-edge "green" luxury condo complex out of a crumbling rent controlled brownstone, only to find themselves facing a series of staggering setbacks while the housing bubble crashed. ***** In the early 2000s, real estate in Manhattan was booming, showing annual double-digit appreciation for the next decade. By the middle of the housing boom, Pam and Colin finished the full restoration of their brownstone, and their building had appreciated by over 700 percent! So what did they do next? They bought the adjacent broken-down building in order to develop the first green-cantilevered condominium complex in Manhattan. At the time, banks were throwing mortgages around like comedy club coupons in Times Square. It seemed un-American not to accept some of that money. Like many others, Pam and Colin got caught up in the housing boom. Green design was the new obsession of the architectural world and their project was all that and a tank of biofuel, incorporating two geothermal wells, passive solar radiant heating, reclaimed natural materials, modular construction, a car lift to a private garage, and Nana doors. It was the green dream on steroids! But then it all came crashing down. This is their story of survival and perseverance that brought a silver lining in the end.

About the Author Colin Rath is a successful entrepreneur, Manhattan real estate developer, and author. He grew up in Connecticut and started his first business--a house painting and refurbishing company--while still in college. After graduation, he took over the reins at Better Lists, Inc, a busy direct mail and fulfillment company, and his leadership propelled the firm into a multi-million dollar business. In 1998 he changed careers and obtained a Series 7 license. He bought a seat on the Chicago MidAm trading floor and traded with his own money. Eight years later he decided to branch out into Manhattan real estate development. He bought his first project for $700,000 and sold it nine years later for a whopping $7,000,000.Pamela Harvey-Rath is a marketing, fashion, and merchandising professional. Originally from Kentucky, she was one of the first "Jordache girls" in the 1980s. Thanks to her excellent marketing instincts and keen eye and ear for public taste and trend, she has been called upon to do product development for top fashion companies.Together the Rath's possess a combined experience and knowledge of development projects, the banking and construction industries, marketing, public relations, Manhattan experience and insights, along with a willingness to take risks and an unusual level of commitment and self-motivation. These factors led them to the successful completion of their green dream project and to its subsequent silver lining.

A spoiled kid born with silver spoon ranting everything and blame everyone else but himself on the failures By jay """Spoiler alert"""The author really hasn't learnt the lessons yet according to his book. He thought His only mistake was working with the wrong people/ trusting the wrong service provider while in reality, the bigger problem or the root of everything is they want way more than they can possibly produce. Their greed or needs are way over what they were capable of producing back in time which results in too high of a leverage, lots of complacency from an one-off success- their first condo project and once the world turns, he blames everything outside. From the description of his family and siblings, it is not hard to see that he is the spoiled kid of the family to whom the parents would give everything he wants , many times without even informing the other children in the family. The contradiction of his family value being love and helping each other, taught by his mother, versus his quick accusation of the siblings skipped that memo (of love and helping each other) , and the fact that he only talks to siblings 3 or 4 times a year tells you that he was the one always receiving love and extra care from the parents and he was living in a protected world shielded by his parents. Look, he gambled money on CBOT then now real estate development, and his full time job was with family business, not a testimony from real world competition from real job market. All this tells you he has lots of desire but little ability to get things done.In the end, when he got a hard lesson from real world problems, what was the reaction ? Blaming others. Blaming the market. Even blaming his siblings who correctly pointed out that he is not entitled to his lavish lifestyle or he is not entitled to waste family money for his own desire. And he thinks those criticisms are not fair, are you kidding me.Only value of this book is to remind everyone to make sure managing your risks in development projects, and don't leverage too much.

The story Colin Rath outlined in his memoir really was a real estate horror story: just about every single thing that can be imagined going wrong with a major development project did. My personal favorite "horror" moment was where it turned out that the steel connecting the the building to it's foundation just wasn't there!Going in, I didn't think that a real estate story could be harrowing, but I was wrong! I'd recommend It Is What It Is to memoir AND horror readers: there's nothing supernatural in the story, but apparently real life real estate development can be pretty terrifying!

Entertaining Narrative and Useful Insight By carlosrlu There is a great mix of entertaining narrative and useful insight in Colin Rath’s “It Is What It Is.” The story is both compelling and sheds light on just New York City’s real estate scene, but real estate as a whole! This book is a definite must-read for those looking for a book on New York City real estate, or really, a good story in general.

A bold, no-holds-barred memoir from one of the most dominant and dynamic pitchers to ever play the game Before Pedro Martinez was the eight-time All Star, three-time Cy Young Award winner, and World Series champion, before stadiums full of fans chanted his name, he was just a little kid from the Dominican Republic who sat under a mango tree and dreamed of playing pro ball. Now in Pedro, the charismatic and always colorful pitcher opens up for the first time to tell his remarkable story. Martinez entered the big leagues a scrawny power pitcher with a lightning arm who they said wasn’t “durable” enough, who they said was a punk. But what they underestimated about Pedro Martinez was the intensity of the fire inside. Like no one before or since, Martinez willed himself to become one of the most intimidating pitchers to have ever played the game. In Pedro we relive it all in Technicolor brightness, from his hardscrabble days in the minor leagues clawing for respect; to his early days in lonely Montreal, where he first struggled with the reputation of being a headhunter; to his legendary run with the Red Sox when start after start he dazzled with his pitching genius; to his twilight years on the mound as he put the finishing touches on a body of work that made him an icon. Bold, outspoken, intimate in its details, and grand in ego and ambition, this new memoir by one of baseball’s most enigmatic figures will entertain and inspire generations of fans to come.

Pedro, by Pedro Martinez, Michael Silverman

Review “This is the beauty of this book, the machinations of a modern pitcher's mind . . . There is delicious inside-baseball material here . . . Boston fans, who know Martinez helped turn around their franchise, will certainly buy this book as a totem to one of the magic moments in baseball history: their 2004 title. So, too, should any true fan of the game. Knowing and gritty, this memoir should've been printed on rawhide.” -- Los Angeles Times “There is little the eight-time all-star holds back about any subject as he offers a revealing look at a colorful career. . . ‘Pedro’ is an easy read, one that you don’t have to be an ardent seamhead to enjoy. . . The intimate details Martinez offers up from both inside and outside the clubhouse make the book a winner.” --  Washington Post “Brightly illuminates Martinez’s many facets . . . The book serves as a significant exception to the case that David Foster Wallace made, in the Philadelphia Inquirer, more than two decades ago, against the ‘the sports-star-‘with’-somebody autobiography.’” – The New Yorker “A treat for anyone who loved watching Mr. Martinez pitch or who loves the craft of pitching.” – The Wall Street Journal “A book much-awaited by Red Sox fans fully delivers . . . Very rewarding.” – The Boston Globe “‘Pedro’ the book is as smart, as funny, and as diva-esque as Pedro the pitcher . . . It's all great . . .  Buy the book. Read the book. Celebrate a golden era in Boston baseball.” – Dan Shaughnessy, The Boston Globe "The volatile Hall of Fame pitching ace has just published a trash-talking, score-settling but disarmingly emotional memoir, Pedro, a book sure to make the reading list of any avid baseball fan . . . No question, this delicious summer read is guaranteed fodder for talk radio, because the always outspoken and opinionated Pedro lets it fly on the page with the same abandon he once showed on the mound.” – The Daily Beast "Well worth the read, an amazing baseball story.” – Providence Journal

From the Inside Flap A bold, no-holds-barred memoir from one of the most dominant and dynamic pitchers to ever play the game   Before Pedro Martinez was the eight-time All Star, three-time Cy Young Award winner, World Series champion, and Hall of Famer, before stadiums full of fans chanted his name, he was just a little kid from the Dominican Republic who sat under a mango tree and dreamed of playing pro ball. Now the charismatic and always colorful pitcher opens up for the first time to tell his remarkable story. From the Back Cover “Later, after I had proven I could get batters out as well as anyone else in the game, I switched to subtler forms of motivation. Skeptics who doubted that my slender body could withstand the rigors of starting, coaches who belittled, berated, or fed off of me like leeches, jealous teammates who wanted to fight me, batters who charged me because they mistook my need to pitch inside for a desire to knock their heads off, a baseball establishment that tried to slow my entry into the rarefied air as one of the elite pitchers of all time, rude media members who probed where they shouldn’t have and harped on the negative—my God, baseball was a noisy, teeming jungle.” —from Pedro

By M J Heilbron Jr. I didn't like this as much as I thought I was going to, but as a baseball fan, there was no way I could skip this book.I mean..come on... PEDRO wrote a book? This I GOTTA check out, right? One of the greatest pitchers ever? I'm IN!As I barreled through this account of his life, a few things kept popping up, bothering me a bit.1) I enjoy seeing Pedro on MLB Network, and I find his baseball insights tremendously informative. He's quick, funny...but I didn't see that guy here in this book.As I read paragraph after paragraph, I could 'hear' in my head the words coming out in his thick accent. But the writing in the book seems as if it had been tidied up a bit too much by his co-writer. A first person account often comes across as the author telling you his story, but the language/syntax/whatever struck me as inauthentic. And when another player chimes in, weighing in on one of Pedro's victories, or an executive discusses a particular Pedro eccentricity, the tone shifts to a more conventional biography for a moment...it's a little jarring.I would have liked either a more "Pedro"-like storytelling, or conversely a more measured, descriptive biographical account.2) MAN does he have an excuse for everything...he sounds like my 12-year-old after a bad Little League game...3) MAN is he an angry guy! It is true that by the end of the book, he seems to have attained some sort of peace, but he is one vindictive little guy. At one point, he makes a comment that he's going to eventually "get back" at another pitcher by hitting him with a pitch, even if it's in an "Old-Timer's Game." And he is defiantly proud saying that.4) His staggering greatness...he had a year or two that are among the best single seasons EVER for a pitcher...we're talking Koufax or Gibson...is actually diminished by his chest-thumping swagger. That swagger that made him so compelling on the field doesn't come across on the page so well.I found myself wanting to read other books...maybe "Faithful" or "Now I Can Die In Peace"...to get a better sense of Pedro's greatness, of his utter dominance of the league when he was at the top of his own game...(which actually preceded the Red Sox's eventual Series success, but I imagine it would at least be referred to in those books...).This Hall of Famer deserves a better book, but he gets to tell his own story the way he wants to tell it...and for that, it's totally worth a read...

Pedro Provides A Mixture of High-Hard Ones, Change-Ups, and Curves in This Biography By Bill Emblom Pedro Martinez gives us a no-holds barred review of his life-to-date both as a major league baseball pitcher in addition to his private life as well. Sometimes a trade can be a blessing in disguise as Martinez was dealt away from the team he shared with his brother, the Los Angeles Dodgers, to the Montreal Expos where he surprisingly found a more hospitable environment. A subsequent trade to the Boston Red Sox led to the most productive years of his career where he initially expected to stay for only one year. The book contains interesting details following the 2004 season with teams such as the Red Sox, Yankees, and Mets romancing Martinez to sign with their team. His father's terminal illness along with surgery on his pitching shoulder led to rather unproductive years with the Mets. One part in particular that I found to be somewhat tiring was the description of the art and craft of pitching to various hitters. There was a bit more than I cared to read about.I found a couple of errors regarding the names of players as well. The name of a particular coach is Joey Amalfitano and not Joey Malfitano. The other was the name listed as Billy Gardner who was the last batter Pedro Martinez pitched to while a member of the Phillies. The correct name should be Brett Gardner of the Yankees.Martinez had the reputation of being a head-hunter while on the mound but he explains each of the memorable situations along with the incident in which Yankees' coach Don Zimmer charged and tripped while Martinez moved to avoid him. Zimmer later apologized for this embarrassment. The book contains numerous photos and we find there is more to learn about the man who believed the inside of home plate belonged to him. Like many of us he had to struggle to become a success and there were those he remembered who helped him along the way in addition to those who proved to be otherwise. I enjoyed the book and it will find a permanent place in my baseball library.

With its unique focus on visual language, Ellen Lupton's How Posters Work is more than another poster book. Rather than provide a history of the genre or a compilation of collectibles, the book is organized around active design principles. Concepts such as "Simplify," "Focus the eye," "Exploit the diagonal," "Reverse expectations" and "Say two things at once" are illustrated with a diverse range of posters, from avant-garde classics and rarely seen international works to contemporary pieces by today's leading graphic designers. Illustrated with over 150 works from the collection of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, How Posters Work provides a stunning education in seeing and making, demonstrating how some of the world's most creative designers have mobilized principles of layout, composition, psychology and rhetoric to produce powerful acts of visual communication.Ellen Lupton (born 1963) is an acclaimed writer, curator and graphic designer. She is Director of the Graphic Design MFA program at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, where she also serves as Director of the Center for Design Thinking. As Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum since 1992, she has produced numerous exhibitions and books, including Mechanical Brides: Women and Machines from Home to Office (1993), Mixing Messages: Graphic Design and Contemporary Culture (1996), Letters from the Avant-Garde (1996), Skin: Surface, Substance + Design (2002) and―most recently―Beautiful Users: Designing for People (2014). Lupton is a 2007 recipient of the AIGA Gold Medal, one of the highest honors given to a graphic designer or design educator in the US.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Poster design insights, for everyone who enjoys posters By Editchief "How Posters Work" is one of several new books published in celebration of the reopening of Cooper Hewett, the Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City, in December 2014 after a three-year renovation project. This book is authored (in some parts) and edited (in other parts) by Ellen Lupton, a Senior Curator at Cooper Hewett, the director of a Graphic Design master's degree program, and the writer of many important and influential books on design. In a little over 200 pages, filled with over 300 illustrations, the volume articulates several guiding concepts and shows numerous examples of "how posters work," resulting in a publication that is beneficial to working designers, design students, and those who simply appreciate the power and beauty possible in a 2-D printed message. The first 70 pages of the book are dedicated to several well-illustrated essays, starting with Lupton's "Vision is a Process." She notes that the purpose of the book is to explain "how designers see" and to explore the many ways in which graphic designers apply key principles to achieve a communication goal. Then Lupton expands her premise by describing components of a graphic designer's methodology, such as "vision is active," "vision is immersive," and "vision is multisensory."In the next essay, Caitlin Condell, another Cooper Hewett staff member, describes "How Posters Are Made," starting with the lithography process (invented in 1798) and continuing with technologies ranging from silk screen printing and various photographic processes to relatively recent innovations like digital printing and laser cutting. The next few essays examine works by specific designers (sometimes with the designer explaining his own posters), including E. McKnight Kauffer, Bruno Munari, and a series of Dutch posters that experiment with use of a focal point.Karrie Jacobs' essay "Night Discourse," first published in 1992, discusses political "protest" posters that appeared at night on New York City streets in the 1980s and 90s, including work by professional artists along with posters by "those who have anger but fewer skills."In the final essay, "Collecting Posters," Gail S. Davidson of Cooper Hewett gives a history of how and why this museum added posters to its collection-- starting with an unsolicited gift of posters from World Wars I and II that arrived at Cooper Hewett in 1949, but expanding into deliberate efforts to document achievement in poster art from around the world, and throughout 20th and 21st century design history. The remainder of the book, subtitled "Posters," is divided into 14 groups that convey key approaches to poster design, including foundational design principles such as "focus the eye," "simplify," "manipulate scale," and "tell a story" as well as possibly less-familiar techniques such as "assault the surface," "double the meaning," and "amplify." Each of these sections contains numerous examples of posters that apply the principle, and Lupton (and sometimes other authors) provide explanations and captions that help the reader understand why the use of these principles results in memorable posters. The sample works include famous names of the design field-- Rand, Bass, Glaser, Scher, Beall, van de Velde, Klutsis (spelled here as "Klucis"), Muller-Brockman, Matter, Vignelli, and Sagmeister, to mention only a few-- but the posters displayed from these iconic designers aren't always the "classics" seen in other compilations. Plenty of lesser-known designers' posters are featured as well. The almost-square pages (about 9 inches by not-quite-10 inches) provide ample display space for the posters, many of which are full-page or half-page size, and all of the posters are reproduced in full color. The binding allows the book to open almost-flat for effective perusal of each poster. And although Amazon lists this book as "hardcover," the covers are more like a sturdy paperboard, which doesn't detract from the overall elegance of the volume, and makes the book surprisingly lightweight. It's also surprisingly inexpensive. Therefore, I can't think of any reason that a poster aficionado (professional or amateur) wouldn't want to add this book to your collection.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. this is a really good resource - IF you know what you are doing By MarthaC I initially saw this book at our local public library. I looked at it skeptically. I have written many employee handbooks and know first hand that the process is much more involved than many think. That said, this is a really good resource - IF you know what you are doing. For an experienced HR person, very helpful, some good explanations and language options. If you have never written a handbook before and/or don't have an HR background: proceed with caution.
