28 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Don't be misled by pit bull advocates: By Annette This well-written and easy to understand book proves families need to be better educated how to pick a safe family pet. Many people are being misled by pit-bull advocates, claiming they are safe family dogs, they are nanny dogs, it's all how you raise them and they are no more dangerous than other dog breeds. The author proves people's positive anecdotal experiences with pit bulls does not change the fact that pit bull type dogs are the number one canine killer of children, people, other people's beloved pets, and livestock of all other dog breeds combined and of all time. Temperament is not the problem with pits; they are generally pleasant to be around when raised well. The danger is the unprovoked aggression, gameness, and physical ability, that has been bred into them from day 1. This cannot be trained or loved away, and you never know when it will appear until it's too late. From 2005-2015: 211 children & people mauled & killed by pit bulls, many by their beloved pet. For those who say "not all pit bulls will attack or kill" -- yes, it's true. Not all will. But predicting which ones will is impossible. They pass shelter behavior tests, then go on to kill or maim people. They "never show any sign of aggression" then one day kill their owner. Out of the blue. This is why they are so dangerous. Who wants to bet their kids or other pets that the pit bull THEY adopt won't be one of the ones who "goes all pit" one day? When a consumer product injures and kills that many people, and generates comparable liability history, that product is taken off the market. What other type of dog has the ability to kill humans that would be mistaken for a pit bull type? These families know exactly what dog breed killed their loved ones[...]

By Mia Johnson It is unfortunate so many people give the book one star because they will campaign for the rights of pit bulls regardless. I guess it just reinforces what the author says in the book. The author has brought together a great deal of valid research and while it was hard to read - as in sad and shocking - in many places, it is extremely revealing. Thank you for the courage to write this.

Today, two-thirds of all Arab Muslims are under the age of thirty. Young Islam takes readers inside the evolving competition for their support--a competition not simply between Islamism and the secular world, but between different and often conflicting visions of Islam itself.

Drawing on extensive ethnographic research among rank-and-file activists in Morocco, Avi Spiegel shows how Islamist movements are encountering opposition from an unexpected source--each other. In vivid and compelling detail, he describes the conflicts that arise as Islamist groups vie with one another for new recruits, and the unprecedented fragmentation that occurs as members wrangle over a shared urbanized base. Looking carefully at how political Islam is lived, expressed, and understood by young people, Spiegel moves beyond the top-down focus of current research. Instead, he makes the compelling case that Islamist actors are shaped more by their relationships to each other than by their relationships to the state or even to religious ideology. By focusing not only on the texts of aging elites but also on the voices of diverse and sophisticated Muslim youths, Spiegel exposes the shifting and contested nature of Islamist movements today--movements that are being reimagined from the bottom up by young Islam.

The first book to shed light on this new and uncharted era of Islamist pluralism in the Middle East and North Africa, Young Islam uncovers the rivalries that are redefining the next generation of political Islam.

Review Winner of a Washington Post Abu Aardvark 2015 Middle East Book AwardCo-Winner of the 2016 Book Award, Religion and International Relations Section, International Studies Association"This book offers a fascinating look at the competition between different Islamist groups in Morocco. Spiegel presents a rich political narrative, but also a nicely textured look at the lived experience of Islamist political participation by young Moroccans."--Marc Lynch, WashingtonPost.com's Monkey Cage blog"Spiegel is that rare creature, an academic who presents serious fieldwork in a totally accessible form. This book is therefore not only a valuable contribution to understanding Moroccan youth today but has relevance to the entire Islamic world."--Jonathan Fryer, Interlib"[E]legantly written. . . . Instead of simplistic dichotomies between secularism and its Islamist critics, readers discover a range of perspectives. The author is conversant with sophisticated scholarly debates, but the book is nonetheless engaging and readable."--Choice

From the Back Cover

"Finally, an examination of Islamism that eschews the abstract generalizations and simple dichotomies that plague our conversations about political Islam. By presenting Islamism as a dynamic and complex amalgamation of competing organizations and orientations, Spiegel provides a fascinating glimpse into the future of the Middle East."--Reza Aslan, author of No god but God and Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth

"Young Islam is destined to become the classic work on competition between Islamists--a topic of major importance in our changing world. Required reading for experts, students, and anyone who wants to understand the future of Islam worldwide."--Noah Feldman, author of The Fall and Rise of the Islamic State

"Young Islam is a wonderful ethnographic account of the struggles within Islamist movements that has far broader implications for the way we conceive the driving forces behind the rise and behavior of these movements. Although young Islamists in Morocco are the focal point of this study, the book provides a way of thinking about Islamist struggles elsewhere. It's worth reading."--Shibley Telhami, author of The World through Arab Eyes: Arab Public Opinion and the Reshaping of the Middle East

"Young Islam is a fascinating and fresh account of the changing landscape of political Islam in Morocco. Spiegel, drawing on years of fieldwork and unprecedented access, moves away from easy characterizations and offers an intimate portrayal of the lives of young Moroccan Islamists as they're actually lived."--Shadi Hamid, author of Temptations of Power: Islamists and Illiberal Democracy in a New Middle East

"What makes Spiegel's book so distinctive and important is that it provides a rich and in-depth account of how those at the bottom of the Islamist pyramid--Muslim youth--are attracted to and participate in Islamic movements. Young Islam is a work of exceptional scholarship and impressive research that will force students and scholars of Islamic politics to rethink their assumptions. It is a breath of intellectual fresh air."--John P. Entelis, Fordham University

"Spiegel asks timely questions about the conclusions that have been drawn about Islamists in Morocco and the Arab world more broadly. Using an enormous amount of ethnographic analysis and a very sensitive appreciation of Moroccan history and culture, he offers a sophisticated corrective to the stereotypes. This is a significant achievement and it has important policy ramifications."--Clark B. Lombardi, University of Washington School of Law

About the Author Avi Max Spiegel is assistant professor of political science and international relations at the University of San Diego and associated fellow at the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law at the University of Texas at Austin.

Sex, drugs, and the West that never was. In a novel at once raucously funny and deeply philosophical, author Gordon Basichis explores one man's continuing search to unlock life's elusive mysteries. Setting out for the Far West after the Civil War, young Shelby Lopez encounters Indian mystic Thunderbird Hawkins. With the help of his marijuana, peyote, and "magic mushrooms," the Indian teaches Shelby of the Great Necklace and the Great Book, which when brought together, lead on to wisdom and an understanding of man's destiny. The history of the Great Necklace and the Great Book stretches from the conquistadors to river gamblers, and finally to the frontier town of Star City. But even as mystic and disciple prepare to join the two sacred objects, they realize that they are not yet meant to be brought together, and that they themselves must return to their lives as The Constant Travellers. Humor, insight, violence and passion combine in this brilliant thought provoking narrative to create an unforgettable story. While set in the Old West, the novel assumes a modern idiom and is as contemporary as the hip scene of today.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. How the West Was Fun -- A New Age comedy By A Customer This book, published some years ago and now in reprint, is one of the great New Age comedies. It is wildly ahead of its time!I loved the characters, the humor, and the profound insight into the human condition that one rarely sees in literature today. Shelby Lopez, his Indian shaman/friend Thunderbird Hawkins, the smart and sexy Lemon Lime, and the host of other memorable characters loom larger than life as they wander in and out of this tale. At once funny, romantic, violent, and deeply philosophical, the author asserts there are neither coincidences nor chance meetings in the world, but predestined encounters dictated by fate. I couldn't put the book down, and when I finally finished the story continues to stay with me as I see its little truths appear before me in modern day life.If there truly are no accidents, then my finding this jewel of a book must have been a minor act of fate.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Destiny in the Desert By A Customer This is one of the more original novels I've read in quite a while. Space and time are broken into fragments in this hilarious new age western, as a young gunfighter and a Native American shaman meet in the desert. As they venture into the future they review their pasts, only to discover their lives have always been intertwined by fate and destiny. The author, Gordon Basichis, blends mystical occurences with the best and worst of the human condition. The results are charming and intimate, and often outrageous, as a most original host of characters wanders in and out of the story. For those used to reading more serious metaphysical novels, this is a welcome respite.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Space Cowboys By Florence Buchholz Not your average cowboy western. Two oddfellow buddies with mysterious origins span the desert, several cultures, and share some psychedelic traipses through history. Witty, ribald, and irreverant. This is a remarkably entertaining work by a young author. If you are reading in on Kindle, people will want to know why you are laughing.

It's more helpful as a sneak preview of topics I hope to encounter in larger, more detailed books in the future. I would recommend as a Kindle Unlimited book, but I would have been disappointed had I paid money for it. That said, the author approaches the subject in a top-down, abstract manner and pays suitable attention to how the different concepts line up together.

By CANDAY Even though technology has been rising up and being used in all parts of the world nowadays, there are still things that are left being undiscussed and a lot are still not aware that these things are very important to understand. Okay, let’s go directly to the point. Say we know computer, of course it is really familiar to everyone, but what if we will say programming? Some will find it confusing right? Knowing that programming is a knowledge that has to connect with computers. Those are the things that this book has to give us! Informative isn’t it right? You’ll surely learn about a lot of things with this book. So what are you waiting for?

By Tasha For someone who has no experience with C or C++, this is a great book to start with. for someone with a bit of experience with it but needs a reference guide, this is a great book to have on hand. Before reading this book i knew a little perl, pything and bash scripting. With this book i was able dive right in to c++. I'm not an expert but it really taught me the basics allowed me to expand on my basic scripting knowledge.

Didn't really give any more information than I already knew and I had to read through the entire book to find out the "secret"...which wasn't really anything secret......

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Inside the dog By Dog Friend Primal Plus is a nice step toward the thinking one needs to possess when living with a dog. If we are to be honest with helping a dog, we must first consider their perspective and stop thinking for them. I think Ms. Neal did well to get these ideas together. It's not easy.Perhaps with more editing the flow of information will become stronger. One thing did stand out: The information briefly mentioned regarding quality sleep and its affect on behavior. A nervous dog has poor sleep. They end up crashing. A dog owner might do well to read this book and consider the dog's perspective toward improving the relationship.
