It's definitely geared towards a younger reader but it's a story full of adventure. You can't help but cheer Schea on with all of her assignments. I gave this a 4 star because I thought the story can use a little more dialogue and more suspense. There were some twists in the story but I think it can use a little more. :)

While there are a number of editorial errors that can be somewhat distracting the writing is good and the story line excellent.

About the Author

Michael Augros holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Boston College, and teaches at Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California.  He is the author of numerous scholarly articles in such journals as The Thomist, Angelicum, and National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly.

By Jacob Whalen Excellent, excellent presentation of one of the demonstrations for God's existence. This book comes at a critical time, when many have been taught that science and rational thought exclude the existence or even the possibility of God; the position has been cultivated so long that many seem to buy into it automatically. Dr. Augros treats of the subject masterfully, rendering the deductive argument into terms and examples that are readily accessible even to beginners in philosophy without sacrificing any of the rigor that the endeavor demands. He also exposes the fallacies of many (and I do mean 'many') objections of the "New Atheists" and others against the existence of God. If you have time for only one read on the question of God's existence and you're willing to give the case honest consideration, then this is the book to get.

22 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Highly worth the read By C. Norman If you're not into philosophical arguments, starting with chapter 6 might be a good idea. I'm not trained in philosophy, and the first 5 chapters were slow going for me, but still worthwhile. I'm going to have to read them again to really feel I understand them. The insights from later chapters, especially regarding the viewpoints of atheists and the mistakes we sometimes make in answering them, were very enlightening and helpful to me.

By Frederick Blonigen Ever since I saw the notice that Ignatius Press was going to publish Michael Augros' book "Who Designed the Designer?" I eagerly awaited my copy of the book and when I received it I read it immediately . What a feast for the mind! I remember telling an acquaintance after finishing the book," What a joy to read a philosophy book that demonstrates so beautifully the power of clear, logical thinking about the most important of all realities: God Himself. " As Mr.Augros indicates in the opening chapter of "Who Designed the Designer", he is not writing a polemical book. The spirit that animates this book, as the author says, is not attack or defense but wonder. Relying on the philosophical writings of Aristotle and Aquinas, the author leads the reader on a wonderful journey from ordinary human experience to the reality of God as the Uncaused Cause or Final Cause. While respectful of scientific reasoning and the empirical method , Mr. Augros uses a rigorous deductive method to demonstrate the existence of God. Along the way, the author enlivens his argument for God with humor and lovely anecdotes from his personal experience. I found especially memorable the insightful comments Mr.Augros makes about the beauty of the universe from the single rose to the billions of stars in countless galaxies in the heavens. After reading " Who Designed the Designer" I now understand why the eminent Catholic philosopher Peter Kreeft called it the single best book he had ever read on the existence of God. Mr.Augros deserves the highest praise for writing such an important book . The only comparable work , written by another talented Thomist , is Edward Feser's "The Last Superstition: A Refutation of the New Atheists".

I know undergoing an interview can be a tiring process but this book makes it very simple, easy to understand. This book is actually divided into 3 parts which tea​ches you how to answer for the questions asked in each part. If we learn to answer them as how this book says, we sure are cracking the interview. This is a very useful guide that will hep a lot.

This happens with these prepper pamphlets so I have only myself to blame. For instance, there are many ways to handle toilet issues such as using kitty liter. I would have appreciated a thorough list & explaination of each item. But that would have made work for the author who is laughing all the way to the bank. Prepper information is needed by people and communities for serious potential difficulties-not just for the occasional zombie invasion. Having supplies on hand and a basic grasp of what to do could save lives. But the information falls far short here to do more than frustrate.

While giving a basic idea and some quick tips of what and why, it fails to give very detailed information on alternatives to the examples provided by the author. It takes a fairly basic 3-day approach to prepping, which may leave some people wondering... what do I do after three days. The only thing after three days I could garner was be prepared to barter.

Jenkins UK oriented, and did have me looking up terms from time to time, but really is a good summary of a lot of material that is a good reference book for preppers, including a lot of first aid. I suspect that much of the material is from elsewhere (again the rain barrel references an "illustration" that is not there, and the first aid is very Red Cross) but the information you need to know is largely here.

Ms. Wagstaf talks about some of the artists who have inspired her and introduced me to artists I wasn't familiar with. I love her quiet, simple art made up of things important to her. Her work seemed beautiful and unique to me.

There have been Blu-ray releases of the classics, Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox, and we’ve had Eli Roth’s cannibal homage, The Green Inferno, in movie theaters. This rediscovery of the horror sub-genre has been reflected in the new cannibal fiction popping up – which brings me to Caniba by Adam Millard.In a horror book, you know a tropical paradise is not going to be as it appears. So it comes as no surprise that Rose has an uneasy feeling as she touches down on the island of Grand Bahama in search of her missing sister, Emily.After Rose and her companions, Debbie and Marsha, arrive at the island, they begin handing out flyers looking for anyone who might have seen Emily. Nobody wants to say anything but she meets some interesting locals who allude that everyone knows what goes on when people go missing on the island. This was a part of the book I really enjoyed, with Rose trying to seek out leads and learning the reactions to her questions. It really sets up the tension and a sense of unease about the paradise. This feeling continues in the descriptions of the conspiratorial relationships between the powerful islander Deon and those who work for him. I really would have liked more of that story and intrigue.Rose is a strong character, even if she does make some dubious decisions. There is fun banter between the girls, especially from the the air-heady Marsha, who is really ditzy and entertaining. You genuinely care about what happens to them.So, as you would expect, we reach a point where our heroines are pitted against the cannibals. The vivid descriptions of the cannibals and their culture, rituals, dancing, and behaviors were great. Getting to know them gave more of a sense of danger than if they were just faceless hunters. This was really well done by the author, setting up for some observation of the antagonists by Rose.Is the cannibal sub-genre too set in stone? It seems hard to bring a new spin. You know what you’re getting. Don’t get me wrong, it’s entertaining, but there is nothing new. It’s like an old pair of slippers. We need someone to write a book about space cannibals or cannibals on a plane or something. What this book did really well was set up the back story and build the tension rather than have characters just stumble across hungry natives. The ending is also not your typical cannibal fair and was a refreshing spin. I really enjoyed this, and you should too!

I read it on Kindle after seeing it listed as a Harvard classic, one I had not heard of before. I liked it so much I bought a paperback copy for others in the family to read. Even though this was written over 150 yrs ago in Norway, the situations are so real and so applicable to today. The depiction of the pietists, an extrene religious group, and the effect on the young people caught up in their web was fascinating. Also the character of the skipper was so unforgettable. I read Leilland's other novel "Garmen & Worse", afterwards, I'm still not sure if its a prequel or sequel. I loved that too.

Peterson Skipper Worse by Alexander Lange Kielland is the story of Jacob Worse, a well-regarded Norwegian ship's captain, returning to his small village after an extended trip to South America. To his delight, Worse unexpectedly finds the opportunity to marry a far younger woman. Sara, being pious and deferential to her matchmaking mother, is resigned to marrying Worse, but quickly realizes she loves another man. Meanwhile, Sara's sister also is tormented by a forbidden love.Until I recently discovered the Norwegian literature section in our University library, my knowledge of that country's fiction was limited to "A Doll's House" and "Hedda Gabler." Ibsen, along with Ole Rolvaag, Knut Hamsun, and now, Kielland, exposed this reader to timeless stories of universal human struggle within and outside of oneself. The inner conflicts of the main characters are many, and, as is so common for all of us, often remain forever unresolved.Skipper Worse, always a jovial but hard-working man, now bends to the not-so-subtle manipulations of his wife. He questions the importance of his usual way of life, desiring only to be with his seemingly angelic Sara. Sara is torn between the religious faith she has accepted as fact for twenty-odd years, and the hypocrisy of the Haugians. Her sister sees clearly that conformity to religious conventions is not her path to happiness, but rather, making her own decisions as to right and wrong must be based on following her heart. Unfortunately, Henriette's heart leads her toward disaster. The girls' mother is portrayed as a deeply flawed matriarch, bent on improving her community status while maintaining the outward semblance of deep piety. Several other subplots relating to inner and outer conflict are developed as well, including debates about when to interfere in the lives of others and a young clergyman's struggle to maintain his religious ideals in the face of strong emotions. The book revolves around the concept of how we each blunder through life, often not fully understanding why we make the decisions we do.Upon finishing the 164-page book, I reflected on how diverse our inner demons are; how emotions sway our judgments; how the façade we present often reveals little of the person within; and how we often thoughtlessly conform to roles thrust upon us. I found this to be a deeply affecting book, and will be seeking out more of Kielland's works.

Luis Madrid Wonderful take on religious fanatics (but in Norway! in 1883) it offers great insight into the splitting hair idiocy that religions become when taken too seriously. In fact I can't remember a better portrayal of it. I found this book from a website---"books by old dead white men"---the site leads you to lots of works you might otherwise miss. Often has nice summaries of the authors etc...This book give you a wonderful insight into Norway while spinning a fun believable story. An old salty Captain is destroyed by a much younger wife....after he is ensnared by a scheming religious mother of the bride. Now I want to read everything by this author---I don't know how many have been translated?? or where to find them....but am trying to locate Fortuna so far without success.
