About the Author Trevor Schmidt has worked as an event planner, project manager, salesman, touring musician, background actor, publishing acquisitions editor, writer, and is a veteran of the United States Air Force and Nevada Air National Guard, where he was a radio and satellite communications technician. A short, Intriguing Read By Historybuff1066 Protagonist Marty works for one of the last active television stations in a rapidly fading Chicago afflicted with a mutated strain of airborne HIV that has proliferated throughout society. The world is ending and the prospect of a cure is their last hope. As a journalist, Marty is bent on investigating a story about one major pharmaceutical company who he and co-journalist Hana believe to be involved in an extensive string of disappearances across the nation. Their investigation leads them into an exploration of the darker facets of human nature.This story is an intriguing exploration of individualism in the face of societal collapse. Only a small percentage of the population, dubbed The Chosen, have natural immunity. These individuals are perceived as privileged by the infected. The plot—which I will avoid spoiling here—raises a few veritably perplexing questions. How far will one go to save oneself? We may all agree that personal salvation is an intrinsic feature of human nature, but if we save ourselves and no one else, can we live with that? What do we cherish more, individual salvation or our social bonds? And would we know the answer if given the choice?I have given this story five stars primarily because it made me think. I love stories that raise more questions than they answer and leave me thinking more deeply about philosophical questions. A must-read for sci-fi fans who want a quick and satisfying read.

Makes A Good Guidebook By Ronin If you are adding a Japanese bath or details to your home, this book is full of excellent examples that will inspire your creativity. If you are visiting Japan and plan to travel around and explore onsen and ryokans, this is a great book with beautiful photos that will give you a good idea of what to expect. This is a the big problem with most of the big name travel books, they mention the places but you never get to really see what they are like."The Japanese Spa" is divided in 5 geographical regions:1) Around Tokyo2) Kyoto & Nara3) Central Japan4) Northern Japan5) Southern JapanI have persoanlly stayed at both Hiragiya and Seikoro in Kyoto, and they are both excellent, though I prefer the former. The food and staff are exceptional at both, but the ambiance is superior at Hiragiya. We left an expensive camera in a cab in Kyoto and the Hiragiya staff called the cab companies, who delivered the camera to the ryokan a few hours later. Incredible. Only in Japan!There are tons of color photos on every page, and each place mentioned includes a good little description. Just a little more information to read would have made it a 5-star. This is a very nice book. If you are planning to visit Kyoto, be sure to bring a copy of "Old Kyoto" by Durston.

Beautfiully presented folio of Japan's finest Ryokan By Sibelius Fans of traditional Japanese Inns (Ryokan) will enjoy poring through this beautifully rendered book featuring 30 or so distinctive establishments from the icy, wintry environs of Hokkaido to the lush, sub-tropic settings of Kagoshima. Each of the Inns gets 4-6 pages of coverage primarily composed of gorgeous photography and a smattering of descriptive text.

Nathan Marz is currently working on a new startup. Previously, he was the lead engineer at BackType before being acquired by Twitter in 2011. At Twitter, he started the streaming compute team which provides and develops shared infrastructure to support many critical realtime applications throughout the company. Nathan is the creator of Cascalog and Storm, open-source projects which are relied upon by over 50 companies around the world, including Yahoo!, Twitter, Groupon, The Weather Channel, Taobao, and many more companies.

James Warren is an analytics architect at Storm8 with a background in big data processing, machine learning and scientific computing.

Borne I have rarely seen a thorough discussion of the importance of data modeling, data layers, data processing requirements analysis, and data architecture and storage implementation issues (along with other "traditional" database concepts) in the context of big data. This book delivers a refreshing comprehensive solution to that deficiency. Other books in this area tend to focus a lot more on the "gee whiz" coolness of data science and machine learning applications (which are aspects of big data that I happen to love, but they are not the whole story). You cannot hope to achieve good, effective, and efficient results from your analytics processes without good data flow, from discovery to access to integration, which is why architecture design, data modeling, and attention to data pipelining are essential. I highly recommend this book for anyone who isn't ashamed to admit that data engineering is at least as important as data science in the big data era (says this data scientist!).

A clear-eyed look at good ways to keep your Big Data system from becoming overwhelmed by complexity and volume By Si Dunn Here's my bottom line: Get this book, whether you are new to working with Big Data or now an old hand at dealing with Big Data’s seemingly never-ending (and steadily expanding) complexities.You may not agree with all that the authors offer or contend in this well-written "theory" text. But Nathan Marz’s Lambda Architecture is well worth serious consideration, especially if you are now trying to come up with more reliable and more efficient approaches to processing and mining Big Data. The writers' explanations of some of the power, problems, and possibilities of Big Data systems are among the clearest and best I have read."More than 30,000 gigabytes of data are generated every second, and the rate of data creation is only accelerating," Marz and Warren point out.Thus, previous "solutions" for working with Big Data are now getting overwhelmed, not only by the sheer volume of information pouring in but by greater system complexities and failures of overworked hardware that now plague many outmoded systems.The authors have structured their book to show "how to approach building a solution to any Big Data problem. The principles you’ll learn hold true regardless of the tooling in the current landscape, and you can use these principles to rigorously choose what tools are appropriate for your application.” In other words, they write, you will “learn how to fish, not just how to use a particular fishing rod.”However, a particular Big Data architecture IS featured, as well: Marz's Lambda Architecture. It is, the two authors explain, "an architecture that takes advantage of clustered hardware along with new tools designed specifically to capture and analyze web-scale data. It describes a scalable, easy-to-understand approach to Big Data systems that can be built and run by a small team."The Lambda Architecture has three layers: the batch layer, the serving layer, and the speed layer.Not surprisingly, the book likewise is divided into three parts, each focusing on one of the layers:In Part 1, chapters 4 through 9 deal with various aspects of the batch layer, such as building a batch layer from end to end and implementing an example batch layer.Part 2 has two chapters that zero in on the serving layer. "The serving layer consists of databases that index and serve the results of the batch layer," the writers explain. "Part 2 is short because databases that don’t require random writes are extraordinarily simple.”In Part 3, chapters 12 through 17 explore and explain the Lambda Architecture’s speed layer, which “compensates for the high latency of the batch layer to enable up-to-date results for queries.”Marz and Warren contend that "[t]he benefits of data systems built using the Lambda Architecture go beyond just scaling. While the practice chapters are nice, it's the theory chapters that really shine. The book explains down to the byte level why components are implemented the way they are. For example, there's an immense amount of detail as to why using a db that doesn't support random writes allows for an application to query the batch layer's results without locking.The only downside to the book is that the architecture and exosystem is so new that there's not really a lot of pragmatic solutions. For example, the theory describes a query layer that can merge the results of batch and real time processing for client applications. However, in real life there are no pragmatic solutions for doing this so you'd have to write your own.It'll be interesting to see how the lambda architecture matures and to see future editions of this book. Hopefully, future editions will be as well written and have a better ecosystem for practice chapters.

The time is the present. The place is downtown Orlando, Florida. The “City Beautiful” lies in ruin. The air is thick with smoke and dust; a shroud of gray and black hangs in the atmosphere above like a dome. The sun has practically been blotted out of the sky, yet its powerful light still filters through, casting an eerie golden glow upon everything that it touches. The apparent survivors of the holocaust are met by figures dressed in long black coats that nearly touch the ground. Their faces are devoid of emotion, and after a brief statement from the ‘Black Coats’, the visibly confused who aimlessly wander the ruined streets step forward, they are tightly wrapped within the black coat and then carried aloft until they disappear into the hazy overcast. The Black Coats are clearly busy as one lost soul after another is carried away and then another Black Coat returns from the unknown to assist those who have met their end so quickly, that they are not aware of what has happened to them. One oddly dressed character has thus far been ignored. He wears an awful ensemble of work boots, hospital scrubs, a grimy tee shirt and an examination gown that he wears open in the front. As the man stumbles through the debris-laden avenue, it is apparent that the hazy light bothers him as he uses one of his hands as a sun visor. He is quite possibly the most confused of all, but he is drawn to something that he is not yet sure of, although he somehow knows he is travelling in the right direction. He comes upon a boy who is clearly lost as he appears from a thick cloud of dust and smoke. He is coming from the opposite direction and asks the stranger for help. The boy is wide-eyed and trembling with fear but he finds kindness in the stranger’s manner and his fear abates. “Hey Mister! Have you seen my parents anywhere? We were driving along when all of a sudden there was a big explosion and fire and all. When everything stopped, my parents were gone; I’ve been walking down this street ever since. Have you seen them anywhere?” The stranger extends a hand out to the child who is about ten years old and then grasps him firmly by the shoulder. “Look kid,” He says with warmth and kindness in his voice. "What do they look like, how were they dressed?” Suddenly one of the Black Coats appears from behind the young boy. This one is female, pretty, with a soft kind face. She looks right into the stranger’s eyes, unblinking, and then speaks to him without moving her lips. Her voice is sweet, melodic, almost musical, but firm. He can hear her in his head. “Release the boy. I am here for him, I must take him home.” The stranger is not yet willing to turn him over to her so easily. “What about his parents, don’t you think you should help him find them?” Once again she responds telepathically, but this time much louder and not as gracious. “As I said, I am here for the boy, I must take him home.” Meanwhile the stranger looks past her and notices that the Black Coats are still very busy as they wrap their passengers within their coats and then whisk them skyward. The woman in black opens her coat to reveal a lining that is studded in stars. It is fluid and inviting and as she holds it open the boy is suddenly transfixed and breaks free of the stranger’s grip. As he steps away, the stranger looks toward the boy just in time to see the gaping hole that used to be the back of his head. He marvels at the dripping blood as the lost boy steps into her open arms. She gazes into the boy’s eyes and smiles before saying, “I am here for you; I have come to take you home.” The boy embraces her before she wraps the coat tightly around him and then they leave the ground in a whoosh. The stranger follows them with his eyes until they are no longer in sight. A nightmarish scene yes! Something is watching, watching him, pushing him southward, perhaps so he may find answers to questions that plague him. Questions of which there are many.

I read the book from start to finish and found myself unable to put it down because I wanted to see what was going to happen next and how it was going to end, and what an ending! If you enjoy Science-Fiction books, this is a book for you to read and enjoy.

Not quite what I expected By mountainprophet Was looking for post-nuclear action/horror scenario and was confronted with more than i could handle: a religious ending. Oh well. I guess this is the early work of an aspiring new writer, bit rough, undeveloped, some logic flaws to go with it all - and a bit short. Actually, i think value for the money at $11.- is a bit off here. Anyway, I had fun untill it got all religious - I guess "Garden of Eden" should've been a warning.

I had to read it right through because I had to know how it was going to end. The story is exciting and suspenseful and the ending was a total shocker.

About the Author William Diebold spent two years and three months in Vietnam as a photographer from 1969 to 1971. Following that he attended and graduated from Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and was hired by Leo Burnett Inc. upon graduation to manage a studio in Chicago. After one year he went out on his own eventually spending twenty-five years as an advertising photographer with studios in Chicago and Dallas. He was fortunate to enjoy success during those years with a client list that includes many major clients such as Kelloggs, Little Ceasars, Pillsbury, Bud Light, Sam Adams, Pepsi, etc. He was an advertising photographer in Chicago at a time during the 1980’s when the industry was at the dawn of major changes brought on by the revolution of personal computers, digital media and the Internet. It was an exciting, portentous time and he still has the opinion that Chicago, the city and its wonderful people, is the best-kept secret in the country. He is currently a high school teacher living in Southern California and teaching digital imaging. He firmly believes that his love for teaching is based on his prior success and self-fulfillment as a professional photographer. He considers himself mostly retired but at the same time he honestly looks forward to going to school and teaching every day because the students with their idealism, hopes and dreams keep him forever young. By Elizabeth Largent This was on of the most riveting books that I have read in a very long time. This book was a "page turner" that defied you to put it down. There never seemed to be a break in the action.I had previously read Mr. Diebold's "Thap Cham" and found to be an exceptional book however, I believe that his second book is even better and hope to hear that he is working on a third novel.

I read that one first and this takes up where that one leaves off. I it a very exciting and engaging story of love, intrigue and thrilling ambition with lots of twists and surprises that will keep you reading.
