By John L Smith Jr Compiled for the non-academic person who would like to know more about the founding of the country, the original articles are nevertheless researched and written by the most authoritative historians today. The wide variety of non-boring topics covered in the short articles is excellent! There's a subject in this book for everyone. Very enjoyable reading and browsing, and should be on the desk of every liberty-loving person this year and beyond.

This is a great collection of well-researched and carefully footnoted essays on various aspects of the Revolutionary War. I especially like the way the essays are arranged in a reasonably chronological order which makes the book both interesting and effective as a teaching tool.I have subtracted one-star for the layout and graphic design of this book. More white space and breathing room for the eyes is needed. A few more black and white engravings, or better yet some colored photos of paintings, people and places, inserted at the beginning of each essay would help make this text-dense volume more appealing to the general reader.If you are an American Revolution buff, you need this book in your collection. I am already looking forward to next year's annual edition!Kim BurdickStanton, Delaware

Super, "must have" book By Ethan First, I have to disclose that I am one of those honored by the editors of JAR to have an article published in this annual edition. I never expected this when I wrote and submitted "Plotting the Sacricide of George Washington" for their consideration, but, none the less, am most pleased to see it in print and to be a part of this unique, one-of-a-kind, effort to expand the reach of Revolutionary War studies to the public at large.As a student of the war, currently pursuing a masters degree in military history with an emphasis on the Revolution, I have spent a great deal of time over the past years in researching and writing on the subject, one that is indeed of vast dimension and great interest. There is much literature available to the public from the efforts of past students of the times developed over the course of the last two centuries, including the important work of current, popular historians (Ferling, Fleming, O'Shaughnessy, McCullough, etc.) and scholars (Bailyn, Shy, Wood, Maier, Greene, etc.).However, there is virtually nothing out there that does what the editors of JAR are doing. By opening up opportunities for the avid amateur historian to contribute the results of his or her own research, accompanied by their impressions and conclusions, work that might not see the light of day, JAR is filling an important niche that might otherwise be overlooked. Further, when those articles are published on its website (www.allthingsliberty.com), the author's work is immediately made available to a huge, interested cadre of like-minded individuals who are then invited to provide their own perspective. It then becomes a community project in which many are able to further develop the story and to make it even more valuable than before. It is one of those instances where the sum of the parts is greater than any individual one and it can be an eye-opening experience.Of course, the annual edition does not include all of the on-line discourse that might have gone on with a particular article (it is, however, available in the archives), but that in no way detracts from their importance, of the interest they generate. The range of topics is impressive, the depth of research similarly so, and the writing every bit enjoyable as the professionals. Rest assured that the editors, themselves scholars on the subject, have thoroughly vetted those articles appearing in the annual edition, consistently do so with an eye towards creating an assembly of writings that will appeal to those with an interest in the compelling history of our nation's earliest moments.Yes, I may have written one of the articles, but I have also learned a great deal from those others appearing alongside, as well as those on the website. Highly recommended!!!

Bunch As someone who not only loved Siracusa (modern name for Syracuse) when I visited Sicily a couple of years ago and also as the author of a forthcoming book set in ancient Syracuse, I have long searched for more information about this wonderful and underrated city. This book is what I had been searching for. I can recommend it not only to those who plan to visit Sicily but also to anyone interested in the history of the Mediterraneans civilizations. Well written and carefully researched.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. THE best book on Syracuse By a reader I am a published author and realize how much work Mr. Dummett must have put into this book. For the last three years, I have done extensive research for a novel that included both the historical and modern Syracuse. I have full access to the libraries at UC Berkeley and Stanford University, as well as online sources, and can say that I have not found a book about Syracuse, in English, nearly as good as this one. I also made a research trip to Syracuse. I wish I had had this book both for background research and for my trip. But even late in the game, I read it with pleasure. Highly recommended.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Guide By William T. Spont Syracuse is a fabulous city; it is one of those places that alter one's vision forever. You might have simplistic notions of architectural purity, say, and when you pass through the baroque facade of the Duomo expecting a pastiche, a Greek temple overwhelmed by the accretions of millennia, you yourself are overwhelmed- by this profound simplicity and beauty. It is also driven home to you how history plays more than a subliminal role in architectural appreciation. You think of the Arabs slaughtering the Syracusans who took refuge in the Duomo, and realize that when this happened, in the ninth century, the building was almost 1,400 years old. The event thus seems relatively recent; indeed the sense of immediacy is almost frightening. The whole island of Ortygia breathes this spirit of a past that still exists. I have read many books about Syracuse, and I enjoyed this one; it is certainly more than a traveler's guide. I would like to add to Mr. Dummett's suggested reading list, however. He mentions Mary Renault's The Mask of Apollo, but not Peter Vansittart's A Choice of Murder or Tom Holt's The Walled Orchard, both of which are extremely well-written. The only negative thing I have to say is that his use of commas is a bit disconcerting, in that it sometimes misplaces modifiers so that I had to reread sentences. I know that Americans and Brits tend to use commas differently, but here's a case where I don't think our difference is just a matter of style; I really think that American usage makes for a smoother read.

About the Author Barbara Ireland, a writer and editor based in western New York State, is a former deputy travel editor and deputy Op-Ed page editor at The New York Times. By Victoria I picked the NYT 36 Hours World book set as a present for a friend and must say that it is beautiful in person. I knew Taschen always makes beautiful coffee table books and this collection is no different! This book set has beautiful linen hardcovers with graphic maps for the endsheets and each city has both restaurant and “must see” attraction recommendations. Each city even includes a map of the city to show where the recommended attractions and restaurants are located. This book set has definitely made me think twice about giving it away as a present!

As a traveler at heart, I open my book and immediately feel the urge to go somewhere new. The descriptions and advice from these books is priceless – it not only helps you get to know a city, but also allows you to choose what is really important when you only have a limited amount of time in each place. Plus they look great on any bookshelf!

I didn't have the heart to throw away the nice carrying case that it came in. A must for anyone looking for a physical or mental vacation.

Poor Stan has everyone thinking that he is the scum of the earth. Caroline is his weakness to wanting to get his life back and fast. She is the friend of his ex wife and the only one that gets his blood flowing. Stan's secret is going to come out fast when he sees Caroline and her cousin Susan on vacation while he is to meet up with a big drug lord who he is trying to bring down. He is trying to save his brother Bradley from his on self destruction too. Will Caroline help him go undercover? Or will she blow his cover wide open. Will their attraction for one another win out? Will Jess and Susan understand and accept Stan and Caroline's relationship? Will Stan be able to save his brother? Can't wait to go back and read book 1 & 2 of this series as well as the ones to come!!

It can totally be read alone, so don't feel that you have to go out and buy the other two, but believe me that you'll appreciate it more if you've read LIAR LIAR and PANTS ON FIRE. The coolest part of this book was seeing Coffey take the villain ex-husband-- who we see as the perfect slimeball through the characters' eyes in the first books--and turn him into a complete alpha hunk. I've never seen such a great example of character development just by changing POVs. Stan's transformation (which we find out wasn't really a transformation at all) took center stage, but Caroline was also deliciously developed and lots of fun. She might be my favorite heroine so far, too, come to think of it.All around, a great book, and just as hot as the rest of her series. Such a great read!

While I didn't read the first two books, you understand the hate and distrust the two main characters have for each other based on their past. However the author does a great job of explaining how they got to this point and then builds the characters and the story through entertaining plot twists and exciting run ins with the cartel. Overall a great book. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I feel her arrogance is coming through on this one, however. She has some very good observation but throughout overestimates her own impact and popularity. She actually seems quite inauthentic, every time she starts to really look at herself honestly she veers off into marketing lingo about branding. No one is telling her to work 18 hour days, her (male) coworkers certainly don't seem to be doing that. She's made tough choice in her life and it's kind of obvious that her family life, friendships and community life would suffer because of it.

By Thomas Garrity The author is a self egrandizing naval gazer who thinks choosing to have a husband, children and a job somehow makes her "special" enough to write a book that never really ties anything together beyond some bizarre concept of "branding."If you want to value something forgo handing off your earnings to buy into this silliness.

No substance By riat This book is terrible, full of jargon and feel good lingo to make working moms justify never being around for their kids milestones. All of the sudden everyone is a "brand" . ..I'm a business owner mom and I want to tell young moms that you can not have it all- you have to find the happy medium to balance out your time away from the kids (mentally away when your on your phone and computer and physically).Stuff and material things give fleeting joy to kids, what they really want is our time, attention, and love...and we need to find a way to give them that while fulfilling our own goals ...it's just tough. Not to mention the husband that you must nurture as well to maintain a strong marriage. This book doesn't provide any deep insight to those issues and seems like an ad for her seminars more than anything.
