From war powers to health care, freedom of speech to gun ownership, religious liberty to abortion, practically every aspect of American life is shaped by the Constitution. This vital document, along with its history of political and judicial interpretation, governs our individual lives and the life of our nation. Yet most of us know surprisingly little about the Constitution itself, and are woefully unprepared to think for ourselves about recent developments in its long and storied history. The Constitution: An Introduction is the definitive modern primer on the US Constitution. Michael Stokes Paulsen, one of the nation’s most provocative and accomplished scholars of the Constitution, and his son Luke Paulsen, a gifted young writer and lay scholar, have combined to write a lively introduction to the supreme law of the United States, covering the Constitution’s history and meaning in clear, accessible terms.Beginning with the Constitution’s birth in 1787, Paulsen and Paulsen offer a grand tour of its provisions, principles, and interpretation, introducing readers to the characters and controversies that have shaped the Constitution in the 200-plus years since its creation. Along the way, the authors provide correctives to the shallow myths and partial truths that pervade so much popular treatment of the Constitution, from school textbooks to media accounts of today’s controversies, and offer powerful insights into the Constitution’s true meaning.A lucid and engaging guide, The Constitution: An Introduction provides readers with the tools to think critically and independently about constitutional issues—a skill that is ever more essential to the continued flourishing of American democracy.

The Constitution: An Introduction, by Michael Stokes Paulsen, Luke Paulsen

Review “This impressive book by the father-son duo of Michael Stokes Paulsen and Luke Paulsen… is in its own way an eloquent testament to the Constitution as a covenant across generations. The Paulsens provide a lively and informed overview of how the Constitution has played out over our nation's history. They take positions -- often firmly, sometimes less so -- on a host of constitutional cases and questions. But [they] seek to spur conversations about the Constitution, not to end them.”—National Review“A solid, intelligent, reliable, and interesting look at the origins of the Constitution, its basic structure, and its interpretation over the course of our country’s history. The Paulsens’ book does not tell Americans what to think, but it provides invaluable help as they think for themselves.”—Justice Samuel Alito, Engage“Short but layered. [The Constitution] displays a professor’s insights and a recent college graduate’s sense for the lay reader’s needs. It tells good stories at a fast clip in limpid prose… the book’s greatest achievement is preternaturally good discretion in distilling hundreds of cases and copious scholarship and centuries of good stories to tell. [This] isn’t just our Constitution’s best short introduction; it might help make our civic culture at once more sober and more hopeful.”—First Things“A clear, concise reader-friendly book.... A fascinating journey through American history.”—Roanoke Times“An uncomplicated but sophisticated primer… [Paulsen and Paulsen] cover the basics well, with thoughtful interpretations of groundbreaking opinions on the free speech guarantee of the First Amendment, the abortion rights case Roe v. Wade, and the 14th Amendment… This is a useful, accessible, and pertinent overview that is well seasoned with opinion.”—Publishers Weekly“A highly accessible and scholarly but lively look at the nation’s guiding document.”—Booklist“A sharp, efficient guide to the creation, content, and construction of the supreme law of the land. A well-conceived, well-executed primer.”—Kirkus Reviews“This readable history of the Constitution as it has evolved over more than two centuries corrects many false beliefs about that document and its applicability to every corner of American life. Written in a style that makes it accessible to readers at several levels, this book tells the human story of the ways in which the world's oldest written constitution has shaped our experience.”—James M. McPherson, Professor of History Emeritus, Princeton University, and Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom“The Constitution: An Introduction is packed both with essential information and discerning analysis. More than that, it reads like a novel-adventure story. It will make a great text in any number of classes.”—Stanley Fish, Distinguished Visiting Professor, Yeshiva University“Michael and Luke Paulsen have written the most readable and insightful introduction to the U.S. Constitution since the days of Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story, in 1840. This book is a must read for anyone trying to learn about the U.S. Constitution.”—Steven G. Calabresi, Clayton and Henry Barber Professor of Law, Northwestern University“A splendid introduction to the Constitution—one that takes the text of our nation’s charter seriously and provides illuminating explanations of why its drafters chose the principles, concepts, and language they did for their ‘great experiment’ in republican government and ordered liberty. The Constitution: An Introduction strips away the layers of interpretation that obscure the Constitution’s meaning, enabling readers to encounter the Constitution itself.”—Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, Princeton University“This wonderful work is the best introduction to the United States Constitution available. It does a brilliant job reviewing two-and-one-quarter centuries of American experience. Essential reading for those who still believe in ordered liberty and self-government.”—Stephen B. Presser, Raoul Berger Professor of Legal History, Northwestern University, and author of Recapturing the Constitution“This is a unique and uniquely valuable book. The Paulsens weave historical context, doctrinal reflection, and personal stories into a narrative that explains how the Constitution has become what it is in twenty-first century America. In doing so, the book appeals both to legal scholars and to a popular audience that often struggles to make sense of the constitutional battles of our day. This is the one book that I recommend to anyone who wants a comprehensive and enjoyable overview of the Constitution, what it means, and why it matters.”—John Copeland Nagle, John N. Matthews Professor of Law, University of Notre Dame“Michael Paulsen is one of the most brilliant, respected constitutional scholars of our era. His son, Luke, matches him stride for stride, as a serious lay student of the Constitution and its history. Together, they have produced a truly spectacular book—perhaps the best, single-volume treatment of the Constitution ever written.”—Guy-Uriel Charles, Charles S. Rhyne Professor of Law, Duke University

About the Author Michael Stokes Paulsen is Distinguished University Chair and Professor of Law at the University of St. Thomas, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A graduate of Northwestern University and Yale Law School, he is author of two books and more than ninety articles on various topics of constitutional law.Luke Paulsen is a graduate of Princeton University, where he majored in Computer Science with minors in Classics and Humanities. He currently works as a software engineer in Mountain View, California. This is his first book.

How I wish that I had this book when I was studying the Constitution as a student. I have many other books on the Constitution but this one is the best. It is highly recommended for the general reader who desires to know more about the formation and content of our American Constitution.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. this fine piece of work makes one realize anew By John Mccarthy This books has two parts.Part I delineates the story of the creation, formation, and development of the Constitution, and it does so in an engaging and illuminating way, highlighting its its revolutionary distinctiveness. To me, the most interesting section of Part I is Paulsen's delineation as to how the 'Bill of Rights' became integral to the Constitution.Part II is the history of its how the Supreme Court, decision after decision, and decade after decade has interpreted, reinterpreted, and to no small measure has extrapolated its own policy preferences into the fabric of Constitutional law. In this part of the book, which is by far the most interesting part, Paulsen shows his colors as a strict (as opposed to a 'broad') constitutional lawyer, mincing no words as to when, where and how various Supreme Court justices have - in disregard of the clear meaning of the text itself - have created their own version of the Constitution via a methodology known as 'substantive due process' through which they interpret the constitution in terms of their own policy preferences. In so doing, says Paulsen, with which I agree, they, in effect, take off their judicial robes, and become legislators from their benches on the court. Paulsen sees this as a subversion of the original intent of the Founder's tripartite division of labor between the Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary components of the U.S. Government.Bottom-line, this fine piece of work makes one realize anew, not only how precious our original constitution is, but also, how precarious it is. Yes, it has stood the test of time, now for almost 250 years, but the three branches of our government are dynamic living organisms that can be, and often have been, contorted and subverted by parties in all three branches of government. Nonetheless, the mere fact that our nation and our Constitution has survived is testament and tribute both to the brilliance of the Founders and and to the loyalty and wisdom of countless government leaders. In a sense, this is a demythologizing piece of work, which is a wonderful corrective for many of us, who have tended to view the the history of the Supreme Court as far more linearly uplifting than it has actually been.Bravo to the Paulsen's, both father and son, who wrote this fine book.

By Ron The framers developed a radical new structure for government then left it to succeeding generations to make it work. This book documents some of the key issues that led to our current view of the constitution. The authors are able to explain the history and cultural environment in a way that is both informative and entertaining. If you want a deeper understanding of the constitution and its evolution this is the book to read.

Clear descriptions of knots and their uses By G Although not an expansive collection of every knot in the world, this book contains a library of many useful knots for nearly every fishing application. It's descriptions of the knots are clear and illustrated quite nicely. It certainly contains more knots than I would ever use in my lifetime. If you're looking for every obscure knot in the universe, look elsewhere. If you want a simple description of knots with clear illustrations, then you've found a winner with this book. It's one that I will refer back to for many years.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Good info bad black on black pictures By BKX In knot tying I would definitely say that a picture is worth 1,00 words. The pictures are horrible. They are in black and white which wouldn't be that bad, but they decided to use a black background along with black rope to show you how to tie a lot of the knots. You can't distinguish between the rope and the background half the time. I would not suggest wasting your money on this. You are better off googling the knots and learning them at home. They have way better animated videos on how to tie which ever knot you are looking for online.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Complete Book of Fishing Knots, Lines, and Leaders By Enzio V. Saalfeld Nice book. BUT - I don't agree to be "complete" book for knots and information. Nice pictures, but again lack of knot varities or quantities. Some knots are complicated and don't show detail information or enough steps to finish the knot. They are missing some very good and important knots. Again - it's a good "not so comlete" book.

By Dappledreams I first came across Cyndi Smasal when I read her book 'Hope for Healing Liver Disease' soon after one of my dogs was diagnosed with liver disease. That was 10 years ago and my dog is still with me. One of the problems with liver disease is that a dog will often be inappetant and so, when I heard that Cyndi had written a book on that very topic I just had to buy it.Cyndi writes for the ordinary person on t he street, no jargon, just plain, simple language that we can all understand. It gives very sensible advice on how to entice your dog to eat, when it might be advisable to go to the vet, just in case there is a medical reason for him/her not wanting to eat. And the solutions are not expensive, just ordinary everyday things we will usually have in our cupboards.I can't recommend this book highly enough.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A must have resource. By Penny L Kidwell This book is a wonderful resource. It has really helped me when it came to finding a diet that my pickier eater could and would eat. Ever since he was diagnosed with liver disease I have been extremely careful about what I have fed him and these recipes were easier, cheaper, and just as healthy as the ones given to me by his specialist.

There are plenty of diets, supplements and conditions listed. It's a book to have on hand in your 'medicine cabinet' even if you aren't experiencing the problem right now. A must have for dog owners. Another great one by Cyndi Smasal!

In winter 2014, a Tibetan monk lectured the world leaders gathered at Davos on the importance of Happiness. The recent DSM-5, the manual of all diagnosable mental illnesses, for the first time included shyness and grief as treatable diseases. Happiness has become the biggest idea of our age, a new religion dedicated to well-being. In this brilliant dissection of our times, political economist William Davies shows how this philosophy, first pronounced by Jeremy Bentham in the 1780s, has dominated the political debates that have delivered neoliberalism. From a history of business strategies of how to get the best out of employees, to the increased level of surveillance measuring every aspect of our lives; from why experts prefer to measure the chemical in the brain than ask you how you are feeling, to why Freakonomics tells us less about the way people behave than expected, The Happiness Industry is an essential guide to the marketization of modern life. Davies shows that the science of happiness is less a science than an extension of hyper-capitalism.

The Happiness Industry: How the Government and Big Business Sold us Well-Being, by William Davies

Review “Deeply researched and pithily argued, Davies’s work is a welcome corrective to the glut of semi-scientific happiness books that have become so popular in business and management circles, and which rarely, if ever, acknowledge the larger ideological goals of workplace well-being.”—New York Magazine “Davies’s concern is to show that by making us more resilient and more productive, the happiness industry tricks us into settling for too little.” —Katrina Forrester, London Review of Books“Skillfully written intellectual entertainment—prime fodder for postmodern psychologists and New-Age thinkers alike.” —Kirkus Reviews   “Davies, explaining the evolution of the science of happiness from the French Revolution to the present, argues it essentially serves the interests of the powerful elite. This challenging book will appeal to academics and students of various disciplines.”—Booklist “William Davies argues that our happiness fixation may have more to do with the interests of corporations and governments than personal fulfillment.”—Fortune“A brilliant, and sometimes eerie, dissection of our times.” —Vice “Rich, lucid and arresting”—John Gray, Literary Review “A thought-provoking and daring intervention into the crowded field of neoliberal political economy … Its bold theses and elegant historical foundation provides political economists with much new material to consider.”—Erasmus Journal for Philosophy and Economics “How ‘managing our happiness’ is becoming an increasingly lucrative and insidious industry.”—New Humanist“An interesting contribution to the growing genre of happiness studies.” —THE “This is a brilliant and lucidly written indictment of the ideology of happiness and its accompanying horrors of mindfulness and well-being. Davies convincingly shows how the happiness industry is the new front line of capitalism, which has succeeded in exposing the inner recesses of the self to techniques of measurement, surveillance and control.” —Simon Critchley, author of The Faith of the Faithless   “William Davies reveals the tricks that corporates use to try to keep us happy while treating us as losers. Informed, revealing, scary and hopeful, The Happiness Industry connects economics and management science to psychology and psychiatry to explain why so much feels (and is) so wrong.” —Danny Dorling, author of Inequality and the 1%“When did happiness itself become a liability? When the market figured out that making us content is the first stage in manufacturing our consent. In this accessible, fact-filled history of measured happiness, William Davies shows us how metrics of well-being were systematically disconnected from meaning and community, and in the process transformed from the very core of human power into an access panel to our desires and behavior. I can’t listen to that damned ‘Happy’ song anymore without thinking about whom my supposed happiness really serves, and what they’re willing to do to make sure I stay that way.”—Douglas Rushkoff, author of Present Shock: When Everything Happens Now“In a heady mixture of psychology, economics, sociology, and philosophy, this book reveals the misguided nature of the currently popular intellectual project to make people happier and improve society through ‘scientific’ understanding—and manipulation—of human beings … An eye-opening, head-spinning, and mind-expanding book.” —Ha-Joon Chang, University of Cambridge, author of 23 Things They Don’t Tell You about Capitalism

"Rendering their decisions predictable" By David Wineberg This is a remarkable tour through the painful evolution of behavioral economics, management consulting, advertising and psychiatry. It fills us with the realization that happiness has always been a factor (not necessarily respected, appreciated or understood) in numerous fields. Now suddenly, it is front and center as giant corporations focus on it, the better to get more out of employees and customers. Happiness has made it to the front burner of multinationals. Look out.Rather than deal with the causes, happiness consultants actually advise companies to find the unhappiest 10%, and lay them off for being unhappy, somehow inspiring everyone else to become “super engaged.” Get happy or get out.It has come to the point where capitalism itself is under review: can measures of happiness replace market pricing as the main measure of the economy? Davies cites the Davos conference, where the who’s who of capitalism now actively pursues this approach.Over a third of Westerners suffer from some sort of mental health problem, he says, usually undiagnosed. It leads to inactivity, non productivity, lower government revenues and higher costs as the unhappy tap government services. It may already reduce GDP by 3-4%. Now a far greater cost than crime, it’s expected to double in the next 20 years. It currently costs the American economy half a trillion dollars. There is an undercurrent of cynicism throughout The Happiness Industry, as Davies relates crackpot theories and crackpot theorists. Then he comes clean with force: “Once social relationships can be viewed as medical and biological properties of the human body, they can become dragged into the limitless pursuit of self optimization that counts for happiness in the age of neoliberalism.” He says disempowerment is at the bottom of stress, anxiety, frustration and mental problems. Not knowing if you have adequate income or even work is the most stressful condition in society. And it is now a way of life. By promoting happiness, companies deflect these anxieties without addressing them. It is a power play over employees and customers. Companies want everyone’s decisions to be predictable, so they frame everything to maximize that, creating a new normal for both happiness as a state of being, and for data collection. The book takes a very dark turn, as happiness requires a surveillance society to work properly. How happy were you yesterday, Davies asks? We can tell you exactly by your tweets, facebook posts, texts, pins and instagrams. Also your health-recording wristband. “They” no longer care what people say in surveys; raw data is far more trustworthy. It is a fascinating turnaround for happiness, and well worth understanding, because it’s coming to company near and dear to you.David Wineberg

It's well written and even funny By T Stojanovic Tackles an important subject and provides very good insights. It's well written and even funny. I have a degree in psychology and I have always suspected that what the author writes about was going on across corporate-sponsored psychology departments. The book is a good complement to Naomi Klein's books. I really enjoyed it and it inspired me.

The chapter on The Psychosomatic Worker alone--is worth the price of the hardback. I was fascinated, appalled, totally hooked from beginning to end. A real intellectual tour de force.
