Best book on punctuation I've seen By Les Weil The purpose of punctuation is to convey to the reader how you want him to read your writing.“Punctuation interrupts the prose. Like traffic signals and signs designed to control drivers, punctuation controls the narrative. The rules of punctuation exist for common understanding.”This book has everything you need to know about punctuation--by fiction writers for fiction writers. It is laid out clearly and logically. Easy to reference whatever you are looking for. And laced liberally with writing tips:[TIP] One of the best ways to avoid sentence structure problems is to read aloud what you’ve written. Better, have someone read it to you. Listen for repeated sentence patterns, stiff wording, places where the reader stumbles. Then revise accordingly. (This is a man after my own heart.)Final tip: Don’t be different or clever because you can, but because it serves your story.Les Weil editor 101words.org

In a world full of people that refuse to use Oxford Commas (Who wants to live in that kind of a world?) Rick Taubold was able to make finding proper usage easy. Thank you for not making me read 1,000+ pages to find out how to use some obscure form of punctuation.

Read it through once, but it'll have you coming back to check on topics again and again. I wish there was more examples and a bigger section on how extremely correct grammatical sentences in fiction will read stiff and choppy.Overall though, a wonderful skill book to have on hand.

“You’re a pirate!” “I prefer the term privateer, thank you.” Meet Thornton Tarok, captain of the pirate ship—err, privateer vessel—the Tempest Maiden. He’s a cunning gambler, a fierce brawler, an amateur wizard, and a true patriot. All Thorn ever wants is a good sail, a fair wind, and the freedom of the high seas. However, his ship’s latest passenger, the Lady Zana Cynara, might just be destined to ruin his chances at all three. Zana is a soft-spoken noblewoman with one rather strange past. As a dryad, she’s the ultimate tree hugger. She’s also the keeper of the Jade Dagger, a powerful magical artifact that Emperor Sung wants at all cost. Can the two unlikely allies join forces to outmaneuver their enemy's forces in a deadly game of keep-away or will Sung’s lust for conquest destroy everyone and everything they’re fighting to keep free?

It was a "No way, that's so cool!" moment :-) Definitely makes you look forward to the next book! The story is well written. The author made the artifact / weapon interesting because its evil power actually had an impact on the characters and made you really fear the thought of the Jade Dagger falling in the wrong hands. I enjoyed spending my time with Thorn and company. Zana the Dryad is an interesting, unique character. I like how Thorn and Zana click together despite their differences. I always try to leave some useful feedback if I notice anything, and the only thing I can think of is that during the battles sometimes there were more details than I needed about the injuries or how some opponents were offed. The story was very magic and adventurous but in a rather light-hearted way (think Pirates of the Caribbean), so those occasional details seemed a bit rough for the tone of the book. Nothing major, though. It was just the effect it had in contrast to the rest of the story.

Excerpt from The Voyage of the DiscoveryStrange as it may seem, the greater part of this story had been enacted before I realised that it would devolve on me to narrate it in book form. When first I saw vaguely this unwelcome task before me there was fresh in my mind not only the benefit which we had derived from studying the records of former Polar voyages, but the disappointment which we had sometimes suffered from the insufficient detail which they provided. It appeared to me in consequence that the first object in writing an account of a Polar voyage was the guidance of future voyagers; the first duty of the writer was to his successors.I have done my best to keep this object in view, and I give this explanation because I am conscious that it has led me into descriptive detail which will probably be tiresome to the ordinary reader. As, however, such matter is more or less massed into certain portions of the book, I take comfort from reflecting that the interested reader will have no difficulty in avoiding such parts as he may consider tedious.I have endeavoured to avoid the use of technicalities, but in all cases this has not been possible, as the English language is poor in words descriptive of conditions of ice and snow. I take the opportunity, therefore, of defining some technical words that I have used freely.Névé - the packed snow of a snow-field, an accumulation of minute ice crystals. This word is, of course, well known to mountaineers.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I didn't know that Scott could be amusing and detailed at the same time By Abel This book is a nice example of how to make a real life story, entertained and detailed in descriptions at the same time. The first expedition of Scott is vivdly told from the account of the same Robert F. Scott in the first of legendary expeditions going to the south pole 100 ya. If you have been to London anytime, it will make you enjoy more, because Scott describes the first stages of his voyage in London and how the english people helped him to undertake this huge mission.Highly reccomendable for those who enjoy reading about adventures and expeditions...

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. the best decision I made regarding my career was to utilize ... By Nicole Xifaras There is a lot of information out there on life coaching, and as a business owner and now a full-time Life Coach, the best decision I made regarding my career was to utilize Mitch and David's methods. I spent a year researching trainers and techniques and found Mitch and David's concepts to be the best. They cover the what and why of being a life coach, and importantly for me, they give you the practical steps that will help you turn it into a reality. Not only is their material great, Mitch and David are genuine. They more than delivered what they promised. Thanks to their teaching, I have successfully transitioned from a business that I was good at but didn't fulfill me to one that I spent years dreaming about and absolutely love. So if I can save you some time, these guys are the real deal and their book will motivate and give you the answers you need.

It's practical and you can take what you've read and apply it immediately. The stories are insightful, the activities are based on real life and already tested and the ideas will fire you up.And if you're on the fence about whether or not this is the right career shift for you or just getting started-- the questions and exploration should help clarify things for you.I'd highly recommend this book if it costs $19.99 but for 99 cents -- it's a steal!

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Gateway to Learning By Amazon Customer I'm biased. I'll say it up front. I trained through Mitch and David and continue to learn through the Mastermind group, podcasts and ongoing web posts. I love that Mitch and David created a book that encapsulated the Elite Life Coach training process. Beyond the contents of the book itself there is more to learn from their online tools and videos. Thanks for openly sharing tips and tricks, personal experiences with coaching real clients to achieve real goals (Dreams), and your willingness "out yourselves" about what worked well (and what didn't) as you were learning and growing your practices.

Civil War veteran John Carter is transported to a dying planet, where he must elude capture by giant green barbarians to rescue a Martian princess from certain doom. In this landmark of science fiction, the myths and mystery of the red planet supply a vibrant backdrop for a swashbuckling epic.Published in 1911, A Princess of Mars introduced a popular series of novels recounting John Carter's Martian exploits. Author Edgar Rice Burroughs, best known as the creator of Tarzan, employed a new style of writing that combined the genres of fantasy, adventure, and science fiction. His imaginative setting — an advanced but decaying civilization, where Olympian heroics play out against malevolent forces and ever-changing fortunes — endures as a timeless world, in which love, honor, and loyalty form the basis for fast-paced romantic adventures.Generations of readers have thrilled to Burroughs' Martian tales, including writers of science fiction and fact, such as Ray Bradbury and Carl Sagan. "I stood on the lawns of summer, raised my hands, and cried for Mars, like John Carter, to take me home," remembered Ray Bradbury, "I flew to the red planet and never returned."

A Princess of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Amazon.com Review Although Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is justifiably famous as the creator of Tarzan of the Apes, that uprooted Englishman was not his only popular hero. Burroughs's first sale (in 1912) was A Princess of Mars, opening the floodgates to one of the must successful--and prolific--literary careers in history. This is a wonderful scientific romance that perhaps can be best described as early science fiction melded with an epic dose of romantic adventure. A Princess of Mars is the first adventure of John Carter, a Civil War veteran who unexpectedly find himself transplanted to the planet Mars. Yet this red planet is far more than a dusty, barren place; it's a fantasy world populated with giant green barbarians, beautiful maidens in distress, and weird flora and monstrous fauna the likes of which could only exist in the author's boundless imagination. Sheer escapism of the tallest order, the Martian novels are perfect entertainment for those who find Tarzan's fantastic adventures aren't, well, fantastic enough. Although this novel can stand alone, there are a total of 11 volumes in this classic series of otherworldly, swashbuckling adventure. --Stanley Wiater

From Library Journal Burroughs's first published fiction was Under the Moons of Mars, a wild sf adventure about a man named John Carter who mysteriously finds himself on Mars. Later published in book form as A Princess of Mars (1917), it is arguably the most fun of the 11 Martian tales Burroughs eventually wrote, as almost everything in it is new and strange from the giant four-armed green Martians to the fantastic six-legged thoats. Tarzan may be Burroughs's most famous character, but his Mars stories are still widely read. With few audio versions of these works available, good unabridged recordings are sure to be in demand, so this is recommended for all fiction collections. However, if Blackstone plans further Mars recordings, it would be well advised to offer more energetic readings than that provided here by Dennis McKee, whose interpretations of Martian dialog sound too much like Tarzan introducing himself to Jane. Review "[Burroughs] has created a novel that speaks to the sensibilities and tastes of a modern audience." ---SF Site

By A Customer John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Tars Tarkas, they are all here! This is the totally unbelievable story of a man who got transported to Mars basically, because he thought it would be cool to go, so he wished it, and POOF, he's there. Then, there's the fact that the planet itself and the life on it are also completely ridiculous. FORGET ALL THAT! Read it to be swept up in one of the greatest adventure series of all time. John Carter goes to Barsoom (Mars, to the Martians) rescues the most beautiful woman in the universe and (later in the series) conquers an entire world through the power of his will and the strength of his right arm. Handsome, powerful heroes, beautiful half naked captive princesses just panting to be rescued, Villians, so evil you want to go back in time to strangle their parents, Big ugly friends, (What are you laughing at, remember Chewbacca?) strange beasts, stranger aliens, wierd science, epic battles, betrayals, great reunions. This one's got it all. The best of Burroughs' body of work, the most action packed series from the true master of the action story. Edgar Rice Burroughs is the creator of Tarzan. Don't ever pick up his work expecting an intellectual workout. Just get in and hang on for the ride

By john larrabee You want imagination?..adventure?..a few dabs of science(remember it was written in 1912)?..an ageless hero?..an absolutely beautiful damsel in distress?..a whole new world?..with a language all it's own?..inhabited with strange new creatures?.. friends and foes?..battles royal?..This book, and all 10 or 11 sequels, have it all! ER Burroughs was the early master of science fiction, adventure, and imagination; a man ahead of his time, and he gives the reader a roller-coaster ride of incredible adventures. Join with us now as John Carter meets, rescues, and captures the heart of the INCOMPARABLE Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars!, and eventually, along with his friend Tars Tarkas, follows suit with the entire red planet, Barsoom to its wild and whacky inhabitants. Is this intellectual literature?..of course not. Is it non-stop fun and enjoyment, the original page-turner novel?...You bet it is! Pick this book up, start reading, and I guarantee: you won't put it down until you're finished!..and then you'll run out the door and be hunting for the 2nd book in the series, The Gods of Mars, and then # 3, The Warlord of Mars, and on through the series. Be warned: make sure you have access to #'s 2 and 3 before you start The Princess...you'll be sorry if you don't!I first read the Burroughs Martian novels(there were 10 known to me then) as a graduate student studying Physics, some 40 years ago. They provided the perfect escape from the rigors of courses like Quantum Mechanics and E & M. Now I reread them, and I continue to enjoy. You will too.

I think everyone makes a mistake though of saying it's just a guys book. I'm a woman, and it was my mother who recommended Princess to me! I think any girl who's interested in science fiction or fantasy would really enjoy this book. Yeah, it was obviously written with adolescent boys in mind but I think anyone can enjoy this wildly imaginative page turner. The characters are all extremely likable. John Carter is the perfect southern gentleman. Honorable, loyal, incredibly brave, respectful to women, extremely handsome; a perfect hero who is never boorish or conceited. Then there's Sola, one of the few green Martians to show compassion and kindness, and Tars Tarkas(aren't these names so cool?)a ferocious green martian warrior with a tragic past who is also able to feel compassion and love. And I dare anybody to tell me that they wouldn't want a Woola of their very own! Dejah Thoris though is mainly for the guys. Carter's love and devotion for her was really sweet. I didn't even know that this was part of a book series until I read it on amazon and now I am really eager to read the other books of the series. And wasn't the end cool? I don't think I've ever read an ending quite like that before. What Carter found in the cave at the end was very creepy and intriguing. (I won't give out a spoiler)Although this is pulp fiction and sort of like a comic book in a way,(I can see mothers in 1912 scolding their kids, "That Edgar Rice Burroughs is going to rot your mind if you keep reading it!") it's still light science fiction at it's best! (I'll warn you right off though, please don't expect something deep and complex like Dune or Darkover and post a review whining about it. Princess is purely for fun.) And am I the only one that thinks Princess would make a really awesome movie?
