Fabbers, slabbers and fakies were dehumanizing slurs for fabricated humans. Bricks, however, was the People’s favorite. The Sentience Laws were created to protect the rights of Bricks, but the laws didn’t last long. Banished to the remote isolation of the Settlement, Paul and Raine are sentenced to live the rest of their lives in the wilderness. Escape and freedom will depend on Marcus Anderson, the man responsible for all the suffering that’s been endured since the invention of biomites—the synthetic stem cells used to fabricate halfskins and Bricks. Marcus needs them in order to find the “powers-that-be,” the man he believes is truly responsible for the world’s suffering. Their journey will take them to a tiny island in the South Atlantic, where the truth is much closer than they realize. That’s where they will discover the “powers-that-be”. And so much more.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What is reality? By Ana Silva 4.5 starsTony Bertauski never ceases to amaze me. Just when I thought things could not get worse in the world he created, they do. And again, he raises important questions, where you just cannot pinpoint one view as the bad one.At what point does one stop being human? In the previous books of the series, it had been decided that the mark was hit when you had 50% biomites. If half or more of you was not clay anymore, then you were terminated. Now Bertauski takes things to a whole new level, with bricks. Bricks are fabricated humans. They look like humans, behave like humans and apparently think and feel like humans but they are, nonetheless, fabricated. Amongst bricks, there are clones, who are copies of someone and don't have their memories; then there are transplanted humans, or plants, who have their memories transferred to the new fabricated body. The world has evolved quite a lot from the previous book. People succumb to dream disease and Bricks are blamed for it. I have to admit I never quite got why, how exactly that flew with public opinion, but I guess it's the fear of the unknown and, as a character said, people needed a scapegoat. One thing that did puzzle me was that we kept being told that Bricks had been stripped of their rights and yet they seem to have some, like to hold patents. Where the line was drawn was not clear to me.And then there's the thing about killing people who had biomites when they entered a biomite-free state. Why not just escort them outside? Why is it ok to kill them? It upset me and that is good, that the story stirred my emotions, and the fact is that is just how Bertauski's world works; the government can do pretty much anything to the citizens.I did want to get more of an idea of public opinion regarding those matters but at the end of the day those things did not hinder my enjoyment much.I was engaged in the story for the large majority of the book. There were some bits and pieces that confused me and I finished the book still feeling a bit confused because at some point it got quite trippy. It made me question so many things, not the least of it what reality is.Some things got a bit repetitive, particularly towards the end. (view spoiler)If there is one thing I would have like to seen better wrapped up it is the events in the first two books; more specifically, how Cali and Nix played into the big scheme of things.I am not sure I was 100% sold on the ending either but it was appropriate enough. (view spoiler)The fact is the entire Halfskin series is an amazing dystopia and the stories are guaranteed to take you away. As in the previous books, there were lots of surprises in this one, plenty of twists and turns that I did not see coming and I feel so fortunate to have had the pleasure of reading these books. I highly recommend them and am confident that the entire series has what it takes to become the next big thing. And I am looking forward to reading other books by the author. Don't let this one slip from your radar, get the entire series now!Disclaimer: I would like to thank the author for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.Note: Please visit my blog Ana's Lair for a full review with spoilers.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. When is a human not a human? By H. White I've read every book by Tony Bertauski that I can find. His characters are unique and BRICKS is one of his best! It's about pre-fabricated people and the rising up of normal humans to contain them and make sure no more are made. Bricks are prefabbed, consisting of 100% biomites. These tiny machines are in the body, and build and repair any injury to the body's organs. What was once thought of as an improvement is now looked at as an abomination. The problem? Bricks look, sound and act as normal humans. They cry, laugh, feel pain, and in their own estimate ARE humans. This conflicts with what the majority of so-called REAL humans think. The solution: put them on a reservation called The Settlement and keep them as slaves of the human race. After all, they are much smarter than the real humans. They should be happy that they are allowed to invent items that will improve the life of REAL humans.I won't reveal anymore of the plot to avoid spoiling your enjoyment of the book. Find out for yourself who is right in this struggle. I guarantee you will love this book....change that to: I guarantee that I have good taste, and I LOVED this book.

I'm not a reviewer but I am a big time reader and an huge fan of Tony Bertauski and his incredible work.I'm here today to talk about "Bricks", Tony's new installment to the "Halfskin" series book 3. I have to start by saying that "Bricks" was, at first, a bit confusing for me but the story line is very closely plotted and consequently it seemed confusing at first but being in the more than capable hands of Mr. Bertauski everything came together and was beautifully tied together by the incredible end of the book.Maybe my early confusion was do to me and not the story line and maybe most of you won't experience the same confusion as I did but if you do, don't worry because it all comes together in the end for a tremendous read!I won't go into the story, I'll leave that to your reading but do yourselves a big favor and read this book and if you haven't started the series at all you are missing an epic tale and a fan of Tony Bertauski should not miss this one."Bricks" is the bomb and should be enjoyed by one and all!Happy reading!

Reflections from Hell presents decades of Richard Lewis' "dark comedic premises," jokes and reflections that are fantastically illustrated by the remarkable art of Carl Titolo. Lewis recounts that he was "blown to smithereens" when introduced to the world of Carl Titolo. Titolo's visual interpretations of Richard Lewis' words create a humorous and compelling reflection on modern life and a compelling page turning knee slapper. As Richard Lewis says of Carl Titolo's art; "though a entirely different medium, it felt like it was stolen right out of my own torment."

Reflections from Hell: Richard Lewis' Guide On How Not To Live, by Richard Lewis

Review "For Reflections from Hell pairs Lewis' one-liners — or 'premises,' as he calls them — with vivid, often unnerving, sometimes brooding, consistently insightful images by Carl Nicholas Titolo . . . a startling collaboration." - Chicago Tribune Featured In: -Vanity Fair-The New York Post -The Interro Bang

About the Author Richard Lewis has taken his lifelong therapy fodder and carved it into a commanding, compelling art form. His early career as a stand-up brought him to the top of his ranks. Over time and through a variety of mediums, he broadened his exposure and more and more came on board to appreciate his brilliantly warped world. Comedy Central has recognized Mr. Lewis as one of the top 50 stand-up comedians of all time and he was charted on GQ magazine's life of the '20th century's most influential humorists.' In December of 1989, Lewis achieved a very personal goal...he performed at Carnegie Hall to a standing room only audience.Carl Nicholas Titolo is a native New Yorker who lives with his wife of 43 years. He has spent the last three decades recording Italy's visual soundtrack through mixed-media imagery. He has held a teaching position in The School of Visual Arts for forty years, and at present is a faculty member of the Visual Essay Graduate Program. His studio is located on the Lower East Side in Manhattan and currently is completing a children's book about a man and his dog who reside in a small mountaintop village in Italy.

By Comic maven .One of the coolest books about one of the most authentic comedians of all time with the help of an extraordinary NY artist,Carl NicholasTitolo, who brings out the (worst) or rather the best in Mr. Lewis' beautifully twisted mind.

I have been a collector of art books and fine illustrated books for more then 30 years By SW I have been a collector of art books and fine illustrated books for more then 30 years, and find this book to be one of the most unique and creatively illustrated books that I have ever seen. The illustrations are not only beautifully drawn and executed, they clearly communicate the ideas expressed in the text, and do so with a wry sense of humor. There is a fine art feel to many of them, and an ingenious variation of style from one illustration to the next, but at the same time they maintain a cohesiveness–Really quite ingenious! Mr Titolo should be applauded for his creativity and ingenuity!SW

Each page is exactly what the book says it is, which is a reflection into Richard Lewis' personal Hell. We only get glimpses, because to spend too much time would be too much for any mortal soul!

This text contains a detailed treatise on color-breeding in canaries, concentrating on the cinnamon gene. Essentially a 'colour' variety, the ideal cinnamon canary is a rich, dark, glowing red brown in the yellow form and a subtle blend of pinky and softer browns in the buff form. While never being a popular variety, it has always attracted the connoisseur Fancier, who appreciates the richness and delicacy of its colouring. Chapters contained within this book include: 'The Cinnamon Canary', 'Reproduction', 'Inheritance of Characters', 'Sex Determination', 'Sex Linkage', 'Manifestation of Cinnamon', 'The Cinnamon Gene', 'Cinnamon Matings', 'Green Cock x Cinnamon Hen', 'Cinnamon Cock x Green Hen', 'Green Cock (Cinnamon Carrier) x Green Hen', et cetera. This text has been elected for modern republication due to its educational value, and is proudly republished here with a new introduction to aviculture.

The Wouldbegoods, by Edith Nesbit

About the Author Edith Nesbit (1858&ndash1924) was a children's writer whose most famous novels include The Story of the Treasure Seekers, Five Children and It, and The Enchanted Castle.

From AudioFile In this sequel to THE TREASURE SEEKERS, the Bastable siblings spend a summer making mischief in the English countryside. The wonderfully imaginative children form a society for the doing of good deeds--with unfailingly disastrous and amusing results. Their adventures (seamlessly abridged) are presented as vignettes with snatches of music in between. Teresa Gallagher sounds unerringly like children should sound. She's completely convincing as both the boys and the girls (and the grown-ups)--and she's particularly successful in the narrating voice of Oswald, who is the anonymous teller of these adventures. Edith Nesbit's strikingly modern British classic is just as welcome--and feels just as relevant--today. J.M.D. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

He's the greatest, so utterly pompous yet compassionate and humane, so three-dimensional, so all-knowing, yet so childishly naive. The Wouldbegoods is hilarious and quite informative. I learned a great deal about British vocabulary--"ripping" is now my most-loved word.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Maybe They Should Try Being Bad.....? By A Customer "I do believe we are the worst children who ever lived!" Alice Bastable cries when yet another plan of the 'Wouldbegoods' goes disastrously wrong. Her despair is understandable, in their attempts to perform good deeds the six Bastable children and their two friends wreck havoc across the British countryside. Yet in the end they do manage to do good, quite by accident. Absolutely hilarious.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Banished for the Summer! By A Customer 6 Bastables and two friends are sent to the country for the summer, and try to do good things. Of course, the best laid plans...But what child can resist a story of children living in a moat house, spending their summer free to explore the English countryside? What great ideas will the children come up with next? The characters are funny and very real. There is trouble around every bend, but a theme of honesty and integrity runs through the story like a breath of fresh country air.

A short, Intriguing Read By Historybuff1066 Protagonist Marty works for one of the last active television stations in a rapidly fading Chicago afflicted with a mutated strain of airborne HIV that has proliferated throughout society. The world is ending and the prospect of a cure is their last hope. As a journalist, Marty is bent on investigating a story about one major pharmaceutical company who he and co-journalist Hana believe to be involved in an extensive string of disappearances across the nation. Their investigation leads them into an exploration of the darker facets of human nature. This story is an intriguing exploration of individualism in the face of societal collapse. Only a small percentage of the population, dubbed The Chosen, have natural immunity. These individuals are perceived as privileged by the infected. The plot—which I will avoid spoiling here—raises a few veritably perplexing questions. How far will one go to save oneself? We may all agree that personal salvation is an intrinsic feature of human nature, but if we save ourselves and no one else, can we live with that? What do we cherish more, individual salvation or our social bonds? And would we know the answer if given the choice?I have given this story five stars primarily because it made me think. I love stories that raise more questions than they answer and leave me thinking more deeply about philosophical questions. A must-read for sci-fi fans who want a quick and satisfying read.
