Recommended to fans who are hungry for more By Parka [[VIDEOID:63df92a39b0975b6748c05155164809e]]Fans who want to know more and go behind the scenes of Hannibal television series will be delighted with this book.The Art and Making of Hannibal looks at the production of the series from conceptualisation to the detailed analysis of the characters and stories.The artworks are mainly concepts of the murders, 3D visualisations of rooms (e.g. Hannibal's office), sketches of dishes by Hannibal and that's about all. Really not too much.There are lots of behind-the-scenes photographs that show how the props are made, or scenes are staged. Some photos are pretty gruesome even though you know that they are prosthetics and effects.The insightful writeup goes further to explain the characters and stories, and that's easily the highlight of this book. You'll get a glimpse into the minds of the characters and also producers and writers of the show. Wait for the next edition, which will hopefully have fewer typos, better color contrast, and more information By Shira Lipkin For a book that purports to be about the art of Hannibal, this is bafflingly poorly designed. In many places, the gray text on a black background is unreadable. The picture quality is muddy throughout. And it hasn't been proofread at all, much less copyedited. This is not a professional product.From a text-only angle, I'm just surprised that it contains so little about the costume design (which is so clearly and painstakingly planned - Margot Verger's high collars in every scene but one, Freddie Lounds never showing her hands) and almost nothing about the work of food stylist Janice Poon. The extensive content regarding the show's visual effects saved me from giving this only one star, but there's so much going on in Hannibal besides visual effects. This book is truly disappointing, and I hope Titan recalls and redesigns it. I encourage fans to wait for the next edition, which will hopefully have fewer typos, better color contrast, and more information.

Beautiful, but not comprehensive By Elise This is a beautiful book.The pages are thick and glossy, and often more of the page is covered with rich, high-quality pictures than words. There are pictures of characters, food, concept art, prosthetic corpses, and sets. Also, there are some behind-the-scenes goodies too, like candids of the film crew bustling around and detailed architectural layouts for some of the sets as well as plenty of interesting facts, like how they chose Hannibal’s wardrobe and how the show was conceived in the first place. Every main character has a page or two of quick summary and brief insight.This is also a short book. 175 pages is not enough. There is basically no talk of the symbolism, metaphor-heavy dialogue, hallucination/nightmare scenes (the wendigo and ravenstag are nowhere to be found), and deeper character insight. “I see him as one of those pitiful things sometimes born in hospitals. They feed it, keep it warm, but they don't put it on machines. They let it die. But he doesn't die. He looks normal. Nobody can tell what he is.” I’m more interested in what that means about Hannibal and how Will perceives him than in how much Hannibal’s comfy office chair cost. There is also no mention of Brian Reitzell, the composer for Hannibal. The soundtrack is bizarre and unnerving and unlike anything else I have ever heard. The guy’s innovative work for the show made it into Wired magazine but he didn’t make it into The Art and Making of Hannibal?I think this book could easily have been twice as long. In my opinion it should have been. It’s a nice buy for fans, but be aware that it definitely does not encompass all that can be discussed about the show. I gave it four stars because what’s there is good. I just wish there was more.

Involving the Home Office and Interpol who must deal with a traitor and gun runner hiding behind his position. It is a quite ordinary spy story, one I wouldn't have finished if I weren't reading it for the Book Riot Challenge. I will have to read another set in the mid east!

A wonderful supplement to the DUMMIES's main geometry book By Robert Moore When I was in high school I was quite good at math, but I was also a bit of a jerk and ended up with belligerent relationships with all of my math teachers, with the result that I took as few such courses as possible. And I have regretted it ever since. There have been numerous passages in economics and physics books where I've been moving through the text, only to run afoul of mathematical formulas. Although quite good despite myself in algebra and geometry, I stopped as soon as I mad met the minimal math requirements.Recently I've been trying to correct the lapses of my misspent youth and have been trying to not merely relearn the math I once knew but to learn, eventually, trig and calculus. I want to be able to read a book on the conflict between Newton and his followers and Leibniz and his followers, and on a simpler level, those formulas in economics texts. To this end I have found such books as GEOMETRY FOR DUMMIES and ALGEBRA FOR DUMMIES quite helpful. Now, there is room for confusion here. If you look at the cover of the book under review here, you might think its title is also GEOMETRY FOR DUMMIES. Setting aside misleading formatting, the title of this book is 1,001 GEOMETRY PRACTICE PROBLEMS FOR DUMMIES. In short, it is a supplement to the main book, which is GEOMETRY FOR DUMMIES. Second Edition, by Mark Ryan (ISBN: 0470089466). You really need to get that book before this one, but once you are working your way through its pages, this book will prove invaluable, allowing you to work extensively putting what you have learned in the other book to practice.The great thing about this volume is that it not only provide 1,001 geometry problems, it provides both answers and explanations. Furthermore, it provides access to hundreds of additional problems online, from easy to difficult.I am not yet able to do trig and calculus, but I've regained a lot of what I once knew. I'm retiring to part time work next month and in the fall I plan on taking some math courses to further hone my skills. Maybe a year from now I'll be preparing to take trig and maybe a year after that calculus. And if I do indeed get there, in large part it will have much to do with the DUMMIES's guides.

By Mike L I bought this book for my son who is very inquisitive and wants to build upon the skills that he learns is school. This book is very helpful as he is able to work on the problems on his own and check the answers for the ones he gets wrong. The answers are clear and concise. This is not a textbook, which is a good thing as my son prefers to work through problems rather than read a textbook.

A thorough introduction By Paul Magnussen Mr Koster — a New Yorker — is (like myself) a former pupil of Mario Escudero, and since 1965 has had a lengthy career of concerts, broadcasts and teaching in the United States, Spain and Japan.The present work, along with Volumes 2 & 3, was previously published by AIG Music. The author has taught from it for several years, but in this form it is now out of print. With its republication by Mel Bay, Mr Koster has (he tells me) taken the opportunity of correcting various misprints, revising the text (including the restoration of some passages deleted by the previous publishers), and adding fingerings and fingerboard diagrams. (The last-named are especially helpful in showing when particular chord-shapes should be held.)PREREQUISITESLike many other Flamenco guitar methods, this one assumes a basic grounding in finger-style guitar (of the order of one to two years' playing). All the examples are presented in staff-notation and tablature; I suppose one could in theory manage by copying the timing from the accompanying CD, but the ability to read would be a definite plus.CONTENTAfter enthusiastic forewords from Pepe Romero and Eliot Fisk come explanations of the notation, plus notes on the guitar, playing position, fingernails and the cejilla (capo). The tutor proper then explains compás and rasgueado, and passes from easy strumming patterns in the forms farruca, soleares, alegrías and tangos, to rasgueado versions of the same.We then move to simple thumb and arpeggio falsetas, along with explanations of the different sections of a flamenco composition (llamada, escobilla, etc.). Other rhythms covered include verdiales, rosas, siguiriyas and bulerías, with examples drawn from the simpler falsetas of Sabicas, Mario, Ricardo, Diego del Gastor and Lucía. Further techniques described include the golpe (tap) and alzapúa (strumming with the thumb).Towards the end there are some intelligent notes on the vexed question of how best to notate bulerías (to start on beat 1 or on beat 12, that is the question).THE CDThe accompanying CD is properly treated as a didactic aid rather than as a recital. The playing is clean and accurate, at appropriate speeds (both slow and fast), and with interpolated comments as required.But above all, simple though they are, the examples all sound like real Flamenco.PRESENTATIONThe most obvious improvement over the old edition is the nice photo of the author on the cover of the new one. But the thing that impressed me most was the exhaustive thoroughness of the fingerings, for both right and left hands — nothing has been left to chance. In addition, the compás count is indicated for most of the pieces.The old version was, however, spiral bound to open flat, which the new one is not. Still, I was able to flatten it with a minimum of brute force.SUMMARYIf most of the above terms are gibberish to you — as they may well be, if you're a beginner to Flamenco and thus in the market for this book — don't worry. This is an excellent introduction to the flamenco guitar. I particularly like the fact that the aims of the book — and with them its size and cost — have been kept modest, while still establishing a firm and thorough foundation to be built on in the subsequent volumes.If you're a teacher of classical guitar then, and your students express an interest in learning the basics of Flamenco, this would be a fine starting point.Recommended.
