By Jaymi Elford Disclaimer: Alinka Rutkowska emailed me a copy of her book in exchange for this review.I typically dislike small eBooks because often they aren’t well written or formatted. Alinka Rutlowska’s book, How I Sold 80,000 Books, is an exception to my rule. This slim book takes only 30 minutes to read but it is jam-packed with useful information any author can apply to their publishing process. Rutkowska hooked me from the start when she reminds the reader that not everyone will have the same successes as she does because every author’s goals and definitions of success are different. She then goes on to explain how product (aka your book), place, price, and promotion create a cornerstone to reaching that individual success and how authors can use these four Ps to hit their target sales. What I liked: Rutkowska has great humor. Her bits on finding a proper editor made me giggle, mostly because I do a lot of editing for other authors myself. There were many times in this book where I found myself nodding along with the advice. It’s good stuff, and written in such a way that even if you “know it all” you’ll enjoy the refresher. This advice isn’t just for one platform (print or ebook), it’s directly applicable to both. Rutkowska also gives links to some very fun and informative videos on how to do some of the things her book talks about. What I didn’t like: There’s a link to a page on her site for a product called “Kindle Spy”. I immediately loaded the page in and discovered how heavily markety-sounding it was. When I tried to close the page, it triggered a pop-up window on my browser (which has pop-ups blocked). This makes me wonder what is under the hood of that app/page. Curiously there’s a section in the Promotions chapter called “Picture and Bio” but the only text under it is “see ‘Product.’”— why is this here if she wants readers to go back to the Product section. I’m left wondering how the picture and bio can be a promotional seller.BOTTOM LINE: If you are an author and want a good, quick read that provides you with tons of traditional, and not so traditional, ways to sell more copies of your book, then Alinka Rutkowska’s How I Sold 80,000 Books is for you.

Whether s/he is traditionally or self-published, these days it’s her/his time spent on PR and marketing even before the book is out. This guide lists a number of tips children’s book author Alinka Rutkowska has found useful toward that end, both before and after publication. She separates them into online and offline efforts. Some offline actions are traditional advice from the days when only pbooks (hardbounds, paperbacks, and trade paperbacks) were the only game in town. Ebooks have made the online tips more a la mode. I’ve tried or am trying most of them because they’ve all been around a while; they haven’t worked yet, so I’m dubious (caveat emptor for newbie writers reading this book). Maybe it’s just that my present and potential readers don’t read children’s books?I even saw some new tips that looked interesting, but alas, when I clicked on the link, I was offered an expensive video course that supposedly contains the secret codes. Even a free download of two hundred marketing tips requires you to register your email address. You can later opt out, but that whole dance annoys me. I never do that to my readers or reviewers—at most, I’ll use an email address to give a reviewer a free ebook in return for an honest review (I’m giving one here), or for other PR and marketing purposes (online sites for those often need one, or a PDF). My newsletter is online for everyone to see, not just for people on an exclusive email list. The author’s tone is generally optimistic here, although she never says she’s going to turn you into a NY Times bestselling author. To compensate, let me throw in some pessimism. There are many good books and authors out there. While, like most human endeavors, self-publishing follows Sturgeon’s rule (look it up), your marketing efforts more likely won’t matter. Publishing success is like winning the lottery. These tips might help, but you won’t find any silver bullet. For every selling eighty thousand books, you have hundreds of writers like me. I keep writing because it’s so much fun, and I love the thought that I can entertain a few readers. If your motivation is just to make money, your chances are slim nowadays.Bottom line: there are similar guides or self-help books on the same topic that contain most of this material, and they don’t make you jump through so many hoops for the tips. This author and I just have different perspectives on what indie publishing is all about. It’s nice to see many of these old tips summarized in one place and in an organized fashion, though, hence my rating. I’m sure this review will be lost among others from adoring fans (the author actually speaks to that phenomenon). She asked me for an honest review—I gave it.

A lot of good advice in a short, entertaining book By Whistlers Mom It's always a pleasant surprise to find an ebook that delivers what it promises and I think this one does.I'm not a writer, but I read a lot of books and most of them are by indie authors. Many self-published authors are writing about a personal experience or a difficulty which they have faced. Most of them are writing simply with the idea of helping others. If one person reads their book and is helped or comforted, they consider it worth the effort. If you fall into this category, you don't need to worry about marketing. Just finish the book, get it edited, and send it on its way.But there are many others who want to make a living (or at least, supplement their income) by writing. If you fall into that group, you need a big dose of reality and this lady can give it to you. Writing is and always has been and always will be a hard way to make money. Epublishing has made it easier to publish a book, but not to sell it. And many new authors are shocked and horrified to learn that writing the book is the EASY part!In particular, I appreciate her common-sense comments on the costs of marketing and the profits you can expect to earn, even with a moderately successful book. As this author points out, most ebooks are priced below $10 and those by unknown authors are usually 99 cents to $2.99. This is harsh reality. A successful writer is usually one who has made use of a wide variety of sales methods and venues. And that takes work and costs money.I'm impressed by her intelligent approach to getting those good reviews that are so important to sell a book. Again, there's no easy way, but her suggestion to comb reviewer profiles and contact those who list an email is right on the money. As she says, an email from the author telling about a special promotion and asking the reviewer to download and read and review the book WORKS. Some authors who have compiled an email list of reviewers can count on reviews every time they publish a new book. Of course, they are excellent writers as well as shrewd marketers. She includes lots of web-sites related to every possible aspect of writing and editing and marketing and tells which have worked for her. And she's funny, so it's a great read, even if it wasn't so valuable. What works for one person won't necessarily work for another, but it's stupid to make your own (costly) mistakes when you can learn from others. This author isn't just blowing smoke. She knows what she's talking about. If you want to be a writer, you should pay attention.
