0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Space Opera in Ancient Rome By Seth Lundquist On the one hand, "Revenge of the Space Barbarians" is cheesy. But intentionally so, in a way that somehow makes it a deeper story than other more "serious" works. Most cheesy stories begin by trying to be serious, but over-do it and come off as melodramatic and cliche. This story reverses that formula by starting off with a cheesy idea ("Space Barbarians", really?) but then goes on to portray all the characters like real thinking people, with the drives, blindspots, histories and passions that real people have. The events and locales, while fantastic, also have a feel of realism that seems somehow familiar.Speaking of the locales, the world of the story is particularly interesting. Without using words like "Greece" or "Roman Empire", the author weaves a world that feels like a space opera re-telling of the ancient world. For instance, the village blacksmith is just what you would expect out of a historical or fantasy novel, except that she works with titatium and electro-magnets. The titular barbarians raid planets from their spacecraft while fighting with swords and shields. It's a blend that could very easily turn out campy or absurd, but instead is woven into something that feels more like The Illiad than Flash Gordon.Although short (more of a novella than a novel), the story left me wanting to go back into that world, and left plenty of unanswered questions to fill out a sequal. In fact, it feels like the first book in a series, like those YA serials I used to read back in high school (although in those stories, the character's never pondered the philosophical implications of immortality, or used words like "syllogism".) I would gladly add a hardcover copy to my bookshelf at home, and would snap up any subsequent novels by this author in a heartbeat.One final note: Considering this is a self-published novel, it has a few grammatical errors that an editor would have caught in a commercial novel. I chose to ignore these when considering the quality of the story, since this is not an English assignment and I am not an English teacher.
