An abused five year old girl, two dogs about to be torn apart for "sport," and a woman and three cats in a forest cabin, are all transported to the alien "Bluemen's" ship. The Bluemen, students of the universe, have visited Earth in the hopes of changing their own world with the help of a child. Bess McPhinney is appalled to learn that she's been abducted to serve as a substitute mother of a child she's never met, especially since Bess has no children and no great fondness for them. Simon Sayers has passed up his chances to return to Earth, and a life overwhelmed with grief, choosing instead to stay with the beings who have accepted him, despite a terrible secret they share. Elpies, Bess, Simon, and the animals share in the nurturing of Gisella, a five year old victim of loss and abuse, and in doing so, discover that species are irrelevant, as they find themselves becoming family through the love of a child and each other. When horrible violence erupts with the reappearance of criminals thought to be dead, the Elpies have their own demons to face as they deal with this threat to everything they hold dear. A sci-fi throwback with a hypermodern take on "information"/thought sharing, Elpie Erectus is a story of staggering complexities and deep compassion. Nisgow pulls off the difficult trick of being both highly inventive and seriously funny. As earthy as it is cosmic, the book tackles a series of difficult and interesting questions with grace and craft. What if your pets could speak to you? What if they had access to your memories in order to fill out their subconscious? How would humans communicate with alien lifeforms? What if these lifeforms could delve into your thoughts and offer "suggestions" (as a hypnotist might)? What would alien healing processes include? What might their medicine look like?Elpie Erectus challenges the mind and opens the heart. Nisgow is a writer to keep an eye on and her debut novel is an absolute must read.

No loose ends; fitting resolutions all. Please hurry with the sequel.... can't wait for more accountant jokes!
