Her eyes widened in horror as she stared upwards at the tip of the robotic arm, which was suspended directly over the marble slab and angled downward at it. The end of the robotic arm was equipped with a wicked-looking hollow suction spike diamond-honed to a sharp gleaming diagonal tip like a big finger-sized stainless steel hypodermic needle, which hovered motionless and poised over the slab as if waiting to thrust downwards at the empty tabletop towards which she was being wheeled. Frantically, the woman began shrieking and squirming insanely, to no avail as the gurney she was helplessly strapped down on rolled her closer and closer to the black slab... "So what's on the agenda?" John asked. "We may have a problem." "Oh yeah? You handled yourself pretty good back there.” He hefted the riot gun. “With your cybernetic abilities, if that's what you really are, and my handiness with this, I think we can deal with any problems for the foreseeable future." John assured himself that the safety was on and gently laid the weapon across the desktop. "Really? Watch this." Syntheticross turned to Lisa, who was happily turning her head this way and that while holding the oversize com-helmet in both tiny hands to stabilize it and keep it properly positioned on her head. "I tried to get preachy with her when I first rescued her to help calm her down." "And?" "Allow me to demonstrate." John watched expectantly, as Syntheticross caught and held the little girl's attention. "Lisa?" "Yes?" "Lisa, Sweetie, who is God?" "Satan." John's jaw dropped, but he recovered quickly and somehow managed to maintain his proper composure as he continued to watch. "Lisa, where's your RFID chip?" "I don't have one." The young girl cringed, expecting to be censured, but Syntheticross beamed fondly on her and the innocent child basked in her rescuer's approval. "Why don't you have one, Honey?" "Because my Mommie borned me to act as a human sacrifice to God and the holy angels." "And who are the holy angels?" "The Devils." "A sacrifice? You? Why, how wonderful!" Syntheticross fawned graciously, as if in the presence of royalty, making the little girl fairly blush at being treated so kindly. Syntheticross turned to John and murmured quietly, "And you think you're going to fix this with a shotgun?" John was speechless. "Now, watch this." Syntheticross turned to the little girl. "Lisa, may I please have my com-helmet back for a moment?" "Uh-huh." The girl lifted it off her own head and handed it over. The com-helmet obviously was as light as a feather. Syntheticross turned and set it down out of the way on the desk next to the NWOP riot gun and John's bag. "Lisa, Sweetie-kins?" "Yes?" Lisa smiled at the term of endearment. "Here, this is for you." Syntheticross took out a concealed cross dangling on a necklace chain from around her neck, and held it out to the little girl with a gracious smile. Lisa took one look at it, and began screaming. By Gary Parker Though the pop art cover (and other artwork in the book) was nicely done by the smooth hand of a professional, it belied the depth and detail of this work. I love near future sci-fi and I'm always delighted to find a Christian example of that fascinating genre. Even more rare is any post-trib rapture story. This work is an original in many ways, and easily surpased my initial expectations. The theme of life under the iron fist of Antichrist has been explored so thoroughly that a fresh, new approach is truly remarkable. The stumbling first steps of newborn believers immersed in a hostile world were heart wrenching, though that drama plays out today around the globe. The pain of returning to a position of trust after past trauma was portrayed convincingly. However, the complexity and pathos of a cyborg with the appearance and personality of a beautiful, talented young Christian martyr went beyond expectation. Nice job!
