What is man willing to do for the one he loves? What is he willing to do to make things right? What is he willing to do for himself…? When a beloved queen is torn away from her king, taken by death and ushered into her place among the Gods, doom is spelled for all who dwell in the kingdoms of Vaenlin. The Lone King sets out on a journey to reclaim his lost love, to steal her back from death itself. But his wishes place every man, woman and child in peril, for the Gods welcome none into their lands save for those they have called upon. There are those who would see him dead, at any cost, and charge men, some of them unafraid of the tales of gods and their power, with making the Lone King see his wrong, or with taking his head. Malgos Blackblade, a Man of the Hills with cruel and violent tales to his name, is such a man. Fueled by nightmares, and a need for gold, the Blackblade sets out on a journey to kill the Lone King just as others, young nobles, are attempting to pacify the anger spreading like wildfire in the wake of a blasphemous event contrived by the Lone King. These young men, some of them kin to the Lone King, find themselves in over their heads when trying to govern a kingdom abandoned by a ruler who would rather bring war back to their homes than to forgive the Gods their ways.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A promising debut By Selene Daniel Green, in his debut opus, has created a world as vividly as George R R Martin, Terry Goodkind or Robert Jordan. His meticulous attention to detail immerses us into the warring lands of Vaenlin wholly and convincingly. The book description listed is probably the best way to summarize this book without any spoilers. It is a fantasy novel with elements from mythology and literature, and it combines them with just enough descriptions of the machinations of the warring factions that it is compelling but not heavy. As in others of the best of this genre, there is a large cast of multi-faceted characters which brings richness and depth to the story. The characters are realistic and nuanced. None are inherently good or evil, but all are flawed. The author puts us through a gamut of emotions, from sorrowing in the pain and longing of the world-weary Lone King to smirking at the cocky smugness of Malgos the Blackblade. He ably brings to life the many characters in this substantial cast, and we relate to their foibles as well as their growth.Because of the extensive world-building, it felt like there is even more to the history of this world than was mentioned in this volume, but just enough was revealed to keep it interesting and logical. I enjoyed how the author used literary, religious and historical icons within their story, and appreciated the delicate balance that was struck between realism and fantasy. This is a promising debut, and I await Volume 2 with anticipation!
