At sixteen years old, Deacon Barnes had spent his entire life on the dusty moon of Ophelia, on the outskirts of Republic territory. The son of a farmer, Deacon’s lazy days are spent dreaming of adventure; of escaping his dreary life and visiting distant stars. That dream becomes reality, but hardly in the way he expected. It comes in the dark of night, in the form of fire. Flames bathe his home, his moon attacked by a powerful and mysterious alien race known only as the Ethereals. He’s left for dead, the lone survivor of a brutal massacre. A chance encounter with the entrancing Diera Hawk, notorious smuggler and captain of the Hummingbird, gives Deacon a second chance at life – and the adventure he’s always dreamed of. But is Deacon cut out for the life of a rogue? And when Diera turns her focus to chasing rumours of the Ethereals across the galaxy, can the crew of the Hummingbird stand against the might of the powerful aliens?

A Meandering Tale That Answers No Questions...Ever By Pheel This book starts with a mystery, one that hints at the start of the Stars Wars series (Episode 4, that is), an attack on a near useless moon. The lone survivor on the entire world, a teenager named Deacon is found by accident by a freighter crew that are there under mysterious circumstances themselves. As the story continues, there seems to be an oddity about Deacon that is not really followed through on during this book, but seems to be foreshadowing for future installments. Overall, this book is one of meanderings with little meaning. We find out that the captain is a sexy bundle of mysteries that we have really no way of finding out about. Normally, one of the crewmates who been with the captain a long explains at least some of the eccentricities to the newcomer (and the reader), but in this case, no one has really known her that long. Also, because of the mystery in which everyone on the crew is shrouded, there is essentially zero character development. The common mystery thread seems to be "The Ethereals", but until the very end of the book, essentially nothing is revealed about them, nor is there interaction with them. The end is a cliffhanger of large proportions (not unexpected for a book of this type) but at first blush appears to be insurmountable by those involved. The biggest question when Deacon was found seemed to be whether he would sold an some slave trade area. With the abilities he is shown so far, the bonding with the crew and leadership that he has shown in this book, and his general uselessness in space and in a fight, I think the captain made the wrong decision. Perhaps I did, too, in giving the story three stars, but one can see that the basics of a story are there; just too many plot devices are used to avoid any revelation of anything, ever.

A 17 year old man that is a complete putz at everything, can't hold on to his gun in a fire fight, and can't figure out the blatantly apparent. Buy the next book, only if I need to start a fire.

Unfortunately, another alien race ranaround the galaxy killing all humans. This is an excellent read for the genre.....ER
