Excerpt from The Story of the New England WhalersAt a meeting of the inhabitants of Easthampton, Long Island, held on November 6, 1651, "It was ordered that Goodman Mulford shall call out ye town by succession to loke for Whale.""Goodman," as the reader will remember, was not a given name but a title that was applied to citizens who were not of the aristocracy. "Goodman" Mulford had been christened John. He was of the peasantry, but the fact that he was chosen to the office mentioned shows that he was a man of influence in the community, and of tried impartiality as well.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He portrays the technology of whaling and how it evolved and gives a sense of both the seaport towns and life at sea.

By Brian Maitland I pick up this book on the New England Whalers and there's not one mention of Wayne "Swoop" Carleton, Tom "Hawkeye" Webster (of the right wingboards!), Terry Caffery, Brad Selwood, Rick Ley, Jim Dorey, Al Smith, Christer Abrahamsson, John Cunniff, etc.Oh, it's the other kind of whaler! As Roseanne Roseannadanna would say, "Never mind!"

PDF Ebook A Historical Atlas of Tibet, by Karl E. Ryavec

Cradled among the world’s highest mountains—and sheltering one of its most devout religious communities—Tibet is, for many of us, an ultimate destination, a place that touches the heavens, a place only barely in our world, at its very end. In recent decades Western fascination with Tibet has soared, from the rise of Tibetan studies in academia to the rock concerts aimed at supporting its independence to the simple fact that most of us—far from any base camp—know exactly what a sherpa is. And yet any sustained look into Tibet as a place, any attempt to find one’s way around its high plateaus and through its deep history, will yield this surprising fact: we have barely mapped it. With this atlas, Karl E. Ryavec rights that wrong, sweeping aside the image of Tibet as Shangri-La and putting in its place a comprehensive vision of the region as it really is, a civilization in its own right. And the results are absolutely stunning. The product of twelve years of research and eight more of mapmaking, A Historical Atlas of Tibet documents cultural and religious sites across the Tibetan Plateau and its bordering regions from the Paleolithic and Neolithic times all the way up to today. It ranges through the five main periods in Tibetan history, offering introductory maps of each followed by details of western, central, and eastern regions. It beautifully visualizes the history of Tibetan Buddhism, tracing its spread throughout Asia, with thousands of temples mapped, both within Tibet and across North China and Mongolia, all the way to Beijing. There are maps of major polities and their territorial administrations, as well as of the kingdoms of Guge and Purang in western Tibet, and of Derge and Nangchen in Kham. There are town plans of Lhasa and maps that focus on history and language, on population, natural resources, and contemporary politics. Extraordinarily comprehensive and absolutely gorgeous, this overdue volume will be a cornerstone in cartography, Asian studies, Buddhist studies, and in the libraries or on the coffee tables of anyone who has ever felt the draw of the landscapes, people, and cultures of the highest place on Earth.

A Historical Atlas of Tibet, by Karl E. Ryavec

Review “Following two decades of research, Ryavec expertly presents the historical and cultural transformations of Tibet since the Palaeolithic period through a series of forty-nine maps supplemented by detailed keys, essays, and accompanying photographs. The first work of its kind, A Historical Atlas of Tibet is a beautiful reference book of value to a range of scholars and students including historians, anthropologists, historical geographers, and digital cartographers.” (Tim Chamberlain LSE Review of Books)“Ryavec, an American academic and trained geographer, spent over a decade on this ambitious project, laboring to capture Tibet’s full majesty in cartographic form. Through his forty-nine gorgeous maps, plus many vivid photographs and illustrations, Ryavec presents us Tibet from the prehistoric to the imperial to the modern eras, delving into the languages, natural resources, administration, and religion of the entire region. . . . Will enchant and inform any lover of maps.” (Dan Zigmond Tricycle)“With the proliferation of high-quality online cartographic resources, it sometimes becomes necessary to defend, or at least explain, the value of printed atlases. A Historical Atlas of Tibet is a wonderful answer for doubters. Ryavec offers a well-researched, beautifully executed work with a useful introduction showing maps of major regions, current political boundaries, and natural features. The material provides context for readers (especially those with limited knowledge of the region) and illuminates material covered in later chapters. One especially interesting map is ‘Travel Time from Lhasa in Weekly Increments.’ The simple concentric circles of this graphic and the text describing it efficiently and effectively convey the limitations of travel in this mountainous area. Four chapters, each covering a specific time period, make up the bulk of the atlas. Maps within shed light on the history of Tibet through changes in territorial administration, distribution of cultural and religious sites, and other spatial phenomena. Text accompanying maps guides readers through the information presented. Ample photographs of cultural sites, landscapes, and historical artifacts enliven the book. This terrific example of the synthesis of historical research and cartography is well cited throughout, providing an excellent introduction to the region's history and a companion to related textual works. . . . Highly recommended.”   (Choice)“This is, quite simply, an incredible advance for Tibetan studies and Asian studies in general. Nothing of the kind exists elsewhere—these easily readable, beautiful maps are a tremendous contribution, for their scope and ambition, and for the innovative approach their maker has taken with them, such as the fascinating incorporation of long-scale timeframes. The result is one of the most up-to-date overviews of Tibetan history, grounded by a deep familiarity with primary and secondary data and distilled into a gorgeous format.”  (Gray Tuttle, Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University)“With technical knowledge and skill in his field of geography, Professor Ryavec presents a coherent description of the spatial expanse of Tibetan culture. The explanatory representations of maps and graphs reveal new aspects of the region, often obscured by a lack of exact knowledge. This volume brings Tibet to the surface of the earth and in doing so gives us a clearer picture of its uniqueness and its long term influence across the Eastern reaches of Eurasia.” (Lewis Lancaster, University of California, Berkeley)“This may well be the best historical atlas of our time. Combining a hard-won mastery of Tibetan history and geography with an equally impressive command of digital cartography, Ryavec has revealed the contours of Tibet in unprecedented, radiant detail. Some forty-nine meticulous maps—ranging widely over time, space, and theme—are supplemented with reader-friendly keys, succinct essays, well-chosen photos, and extensive scholarly notes. The result is a landmark work in every way. Pore over these pages for a new understanding of how livelihood, sovereignty, ethnicity, and belief have intersected to shape one of the most complex and celebrated landscapes on the globe. A must-have for every serious library.” (Kären Wigen, coeditor of Cartographic Japan)

The Ultimate for Arm-chair Explorers By applewood An excellent production overall, with an abundance of detailed and meticulously compiled maps (49 mostly double-page maps in all) covering the history of the Tibetan plateau from 30,000 BCE to present, as well as a nice collection of photographs (both historic and recent - of Tibetan peoples, landscapes, architecture and art), with helpful and detailed explanatory essays throughout (great historic reference). This will be a delight for lovers of Tibetan culture and history, and/or history and maps in general. Just about every place and aspect of Tibetan culture is covered (apparently whatever was available to document in the historic record - with emphasis on imperial and then theocratic politics and influence, but also including things like languages, trade patterns and natural resources). The only thing lacking that I can see is the traditionally conceived map of this world according to Buddhist cosmology.

Many years in the future, mankind has come to inhabit three planets in a system far away. The worlds have divided into two kinds of people: those with the money to buy the highly addictive cybernetic parts peddled by civilization's biggest industry, and those left to return to dust without. The only thing the people need to fix this broken excuse for civilization and bring down Nominus City, where it's never dark and it never rains, is a Valkyrie. Too bad they're all dead, and no one cries for monsters...

Best book on punctuation I've seen By Les Weil The purpose of punctuation is to convey to the reader how you want him to read your writing.“Punctuation interrupts the prose. Like traffic signals and signs designed to control drivers, punctuation controls the narrative. The rules of punctuation exist for common understanding.”This book has everything you need to know about punctuation--by fiction writers for fiction writers. It is laid out clearly and logically. Easy to reference whatever you are looking for. And laced liberally with writing tips:[TIP] One of the best ways to avoid sentence structure problems is to read aloud what you’ve written. Better, have someone read it to you. Listen for repeated sentence patterns, stiff wording, places where the reader stumbles. Then revise accordingly. (This is a man after my own heart.)Final tip: Don’t be different or clever because you can, but because it serves your story.Les Weil editor 101words.org

Read it through once, but it'll have you coming back to check on topics again and again. I wish there was more examples and a bigger section on how extremely correct grammatical sentences in fiction will read stiff and choppy.Overall though, a wonderful skill book to have on hand.

However, his ship’s latest passenger, the Lady Zana Cynara, might just be destined to ruin his chances at all three. Zana is a soft-spoken noblewoman with one rather strange past. The author made the artifact / weapon interesting because its evil power actually had an impact on the characters and made you really fear the thought of the Jade Dagger falling in the wrong hands. I enjoyed spending my time with Thorn and company. Zana the Dryad is an interesting, unique character. I like how Thorn and Zana click together despite their differences. I always try to leave some useful feedback if I notice anything, and the only thing I can think of is that during the battles sometimes there were more details than I needed about the injuries or how some opponents were offed. The story was very magic and adventurous but in a rather light-hearted way (think Pirates of the Caribbean), so those occasional details seemed a bit rough for the tone of the book. Nothing major, though. It was just the effect it had in contrast to the rest of the story.

Excerpt from The Voyage of the DiscoveryStrange as it may seem, the greater part of this story had been enacted before I realised that it would devolve on me to narrate it in book form. When first I saw vaguely this unwelcome task before me there was fresh in my mind not only the benefit which we had derived from studying the records of former Polar voyages, but the disappointment which we had sometimes suffered from the insufficient detail which they provided. It appeared to me in consequence that the first object in writing an account of a Polar voyage was the guidance of future voyagers; the first duty of the writer was to his successors.I have done my best to keep this object in view, and I give this explanation because I am conscious that it has led me into descriptive detail which will probably be tiresome to the ordinary reader. As, however, such matter is more or less massed into certain portions of the book, I take comfort from reflecting that the interested reader will have no difficulty in avoiding such parts as he may consider tedious.I have endeavoured to avoid the use of technicalities, but in all cases this has not been possible, as the English language is poor in words descriptive of conditions of ice and snow. I take the opportunity, therefore, of defining some technical words that I have used freely.Névé - the packed snow of a snow-field, an accumulation of minute ice crystals. This word is, of course, well known to mountaineers.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I didn't know that Scott could be amusing and detailed at the same time By Abel This book is a nice example of how to make a real life story, entertained and detailed in descriptions at the same time. The first expedition of Scott is vivdly told from the account of the same Robert F. Scott in the first of legendary expeditions going to the south pole 100 ya. If you have been to London anytime, it will make you enjoy more, because Scott describes the first stages of his voyage in London and how the english people helped him to undertake this huge mission.Highly reccomendable for those who enjoy reading about adventures and expeditions...

By Nicole Xifaras There is a lot of information out there on life coaching, and as a business owner and now a full-time Life Coach, the best decision I made regarding my career was to utilize Mitch and David's methods. I spent a year researching trainers and techniques and found Mitch and David's concepts to be the best. They cover the what and why of being a life coach, and importantly for me, they give you the practical steps that will help you turn it into a reality. Not only is their material great, Mitch and David are genuine. They more than delivered what they promised. Thanks to their teaching, I have successfully transitioned from a business that I was good at but didn't fulfill me to one that I spent years dreaming about and absolutely love. So if I can save you some time, these guys are the real deal and their book will motivate and give you the answers you need.

It's practical and you can take what you've read and apply it immediately. The stories are insightful, the activities are based on real life and already tested and the ideas will fire you up.And if you're on the fence about whether or not this is the right career shift for you or just getting started-- the questions and exploration should help clarify things for you.I'd highly recommend this book if it costs $19.99 but for 99 cents -- it's a steal!

I trained through Mitch and David and continue to learn through the Mastermind group, podcasts and ongoing web posts. I love that Mitch and David created a book that encapsulated the Elite Life Coach training process. Beyond the contents of the book itself there is more to learn from their online tools and videos. Thanks for openly sharing tips and tricks, personal experiences with coaching real clients to achieve real goals (Dreams), and your willingness "out yourselves" about what worked well (and what didn't) as you were learning and growing your practices.

Civil War veteran John Carter is transported to a dying planet, where he must elude capture by giant green barbarians to rescue a Martian princess from certain doom. In this landmark of science fiction, the myths and mystery of the red planet supply a vibrant backdrop for a swashbuckling epic.Published in 1911, A Princess of Mars introduced a popular series of novels recounting John Carter's Martian exploits. Author Edgar Rice Burroughs, best known as the creator of Tarzan, employed a new style of writing that combined the genres of fantasy, adventure, and science fiction. His imaginative setting — an advanced but decaying civilization, where Olympian heroics play out against malevolent forces and ever-changing fortunes — endures as a timeless world, in which love, honor, and loyalty form the basis for fast-paced romantic adventures.Generations of readers have thrilled to Burroughs' Martian tales, including writers of science fiction and fact, such as Ray Bradbury and Carl Sagan. "I stood on the lawns of summer, raised my hands, and cried for Mars, like John Carter, to take me home," remembered Ray Bradbury, "I flew to the red planet and never returned."

A Princess of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Amazon.com Review Although Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is justifiably famous as the creator of Tarzan of the Apes, that uprooted Englishman was not his only popular hero. Burroughs's first sale (in 1912) was A Princess of Mars, opening the floodgates to one of the must successful--and prolific--literary careers in history. This is a wonderful scientific romance that perhaps can be best described as early science fiction melded with an epic dose of romantic adventure. A Princess of Mars is the first adventure of John Carter, a Civil War veteran who unexpectedly find himself transplanted to the planet Mars. Yet this red planet is far more than a dusty, barren place; it's a fantasy world populated with giant green barbarians, beautiful maidens in distress, and weird flora and monstrous fauna the likes of which could only exist in the author's boundless imagination. Sheer escapism of the tallest order, the Martian novels are perfect entertainment for those who find Tarzan's fantastic adventures aren't, well, fantastic enough. Although this novel can stand alone, there are a total of 11 volumes in this classic series of otherworldly, swashbuckling adventure. --Stanley Wiater

From Library Journal Burroughs's first published fiction was Under the Moons of Mars, a wild sf adventure about a man named John Carter who mysteriously finds himself on Mars. Later published in book form as A Princess of Mars (1917), it is arguably the most fun of the 11 Martian tales Burroughs eventually wrote, as almost everything in it is new and strange from the giant four-armed green Martians to the fantastic six-legged thoats. Tarzan may be Burroughs's most famous character, but his Mars stories are still widely read. With few audio versions of these works available, good unabridged recordings are sure to be in demand, so this is recommended for all fiction collections. However, if Blackstone plans further Mars recordings, it would be well advised to offer more energetic readings than that provided here by Dennis McKee, whose interpretations of Martian dialog sound too much like Tarzan introducing himself to Jane. Kent Rasmussen, Thousand Oaks, CA Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "[Burroughs] has created a novel that speaks to the sensibilities and tastes of a modern audience." ---SF Site

By A Customer John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Tars Tarkas, they are all here! This is the totally unbelievable story of a man who got transported to Mars basically, because he thought it would be cool to go, so he wished it, and POOF, he's there. Then, there's the fact that the planet itself and the life on it are also completely ridiculous. FORGET ALL THAT! Read it to be swept up in one of the greatest adventure series of all time. John Carter goes to Barsoom (Mars, to the Martians) rescues the most beautiful woman in the universe and (later in the series) conquers an entire world through the power of his will and the strength of his right arm. Handsome, powerful heroes, beautiful half naked captive princesses just panting to be rescued, Villians, so evil you want to go back in time to strangle their parents, Big ugly friends, (What are you laughing at, remember Chewbacca?) strange beasts, stranger aliens, wierd science, epic battles, betrayals, great reunions. This one's got it all. The best of Burroughs' body of work, the most action packed series from the true master of the action story. Edgar Rice Burroughs is the creator of Tarzan. Don't ever pick up his work expecting an intellectual workout. Just get in and hang on for the ride

By john larrabee You want imagination?..adventure?..a few dabs of science(remember it was written in 1912)?..an ageless hero?..an absolutely beautiful damsel in distress?..a whole new world?..with a language all it's own?..inhabited with strange new creatures?.. friends and foes?..battles royal?..This book, and all 10 or 11 sequels, have it all! ER Burroughs was the early master of science fiction, adventure, and imagination; a man ahead of his time, and he gives the reader a roller-coaster ride of incredible adventures. Join with us now as John Carter meets, rescues, and captures the heart of the INCOMPARABLE Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars!, and eventually, along with his friend Tars Tarkas, follows suit with the entire red planet, Barsoom to its wild and whacky inhabitants. Is this intellectual literature?..of course not. Is it non-stop fun and enjoyment, the original page-turner novel?...You bet it is! Pick this book up, start reading, and I guarantee: you won't put it down until you're finished!..and then you'll run out the door and be hunting for the 2nd book in the series, The Gods of Mars, and then # 3, The Warlord of Mars, and on through the series. Be warned: make sure you have access to #'s 2 and 3 before you start The Princess...you'll be sorry if you don't!I first read the Burroughs Martian novels(there were 10 known to me then) as a graduate student studying Physics, some 40 years ago. They provided the perfect escape from the rigors of courses like Quantum Mechanics and E & M. Now I reread them, and I continue to enjoy. You will too.

I think everyone makes a mistake though of saying it's just a guys book. I'm a woman, and it was my mother who recommended Princess to me! I think any girl who's interested in science fiction or fantasy would really enjoy this book. Yeah, it was obviously written with adolescent boys in mind but I think anyone can enjoy this wildly imaginative page turner. The characters are all extremely likable. John Carter is the perfect southern gentleman. Honorable, loyal, incredibly brave, respectful to women, extremely handsome; a perfect hero who is never boorish or conceited. Then there's Sola, one of the few green Martians to show compassion and kindness, and Tars Tarkas(aren't these names so cool?)a ferocious green martian warrior with a tragic past who is also able to feel compassion and love. And I dare anybody to tell me that they wouldn't want a Woola of their very own! Dejah Thoris though is mainly for the guys. Carter's love and devotion for her was really sweet. I didn't even know that this was part of a book series until I read it on amazon and now I am really eager to read the other books of the series. And wasn't the end cool? I don't think I've ever read an ending quite like that before. What Carter found in the cave at the end was very creepy and intriguing. (I won't give out a spoiler)Although this is pulp fiction and sort of like a comic book in a way,(I can see mothers in 1912 scolding their kids, "That Edgar Rice Burroughs is going to rot your mind if you keep reading it!") it's still light science fiction at it's best! (I'll warn you right off though, please don't expect something deep and complex like Dune or Darkover and post a review whining about it. Princess is purely for fun.) And am I the only one that thinks Princess would make a really awesome movie?

From war powers to health care, freedom of speech to gun ownership, religious liberty to abortion, practically every aspect of American life is shaped by the Constitution. This vital document, along with its history of political and judicial interpretation, governs our individual lives and the life of our nation. Yet most of us know surprisingly little about the Constitution itself, and are woefully unprepared to think for ourselves about recent developments in its long and storied history. The Constitution: An Introduction is the definitive modern primer on the US Constitution. Michael Stokes Paulsen, one of the nation’s most provocative and accomplished scholars of the Constitution, and his son Luke Paulsen, a gifted young writer and lay scholar, have combined to write a lively introduction to the supreme law of the United States, covering the Constitution’s history and meaning in clear, accessible terms.Beginning with the Constitution’s birth in 1787, Paulsen and Paulsen offer a grand tour of its provisions, principles, and interpretation, introducing readers to the characters and controversies that have shaped the Constitution in the 200-plus years since its creation. Along the way, the authors provide correctives to the shallow myths and partial truths that pervade so much popular treatment of the Constitution, from school textbooks to media accounts of today’s controversies, and offer powerful insights into the Constitution’s true meaning.A lucid and engaging guide, The Constitution: An Introduction provides readers with the tools to think critically and independently about constitutional issues—a skill that is ever more essential to the continued flourishing of American democracy.

The Constitution: An Introduction, by Michael Stokes Paulsen, Luke Paulsen

Review “This impressive book by the father-son duo of Michael Stokes Paulsen and Luke Paulsen… is in its own way an eloquent testament to the Constitution as a covenant across generations. The Paulsens provide a lively and informed overview of how the Constitution has played out over our nation's history. They take positions -- often firmly, sometimes less so -- on a host of constitutional cases and questions. But [they] seek to spur conversations about the Constitution, not to end them.”—National Review“A solid, intelligent, reliable, and interesting look at the origins of the Constitution, its basic structure, and its interpretation over the course of our country’s history. The Paulsens’ book does not tell Americans what to think, but it provides invaluable help as they think for themselves.”—Justice Samuel Alito, Engage“Short but layered. [The Constitution] displays a professor’s insights and a recent college graduate’s sense for the lay reader’s needs. It tells good stories at a fast clip in limpid prose… the book’s greatest achievement is preternaturally good discretion in distilling hundreds of cases and copious scholarship and centuries of good stories to tell. [This] isn’t just our Constitution’s best short introduction; it might help make our civic culture at once more sober and more hopeful.”—First Things“A clear, concise reader-friendly book.... A fascinating journey through American history.”—Roanoke Times“An uncomplicated but sophisticated primer… [Paulsen and Paulsen] cover the basics well, with thoughtful interpretations of groundbreaking opinions on the free speech guarantee of the First Amendment, the abortion rights case Roe v. Wade, and the 14th Amendment… This is a useful, accessible, and pertinent overview that is well seasoned with opinion.”—Publishers Weekly“A highly accessible and scholarly but lively look at the nation’s guiding document.”—Booklist“A sharp, efficient guide to the creation, content, and construction of the supreme law of the land. A well-conceived, well-executed primer.”—Kirkus Reviews“This readable history of the Constitution as it has evolved over more than two centuries corrects many false beliefs about that document and its applicability to every corner of American life. Written in a style that makes it accessible to readers at several levels, this book tells the human story of the ways in which the world's oldest written constitution has shaped our experience.”—James M. McPherson, Professor of History Emeritus, Princeton University, and Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom“The Constitution: An Introduction is packed both with essential information and discerning analysis. More than that, it reads like a novel-adventure story. It will make a great text in any number of classes.”—Stanley Fish, Distinguished Visiting Professor, Yeshiva University“Michael and Luke Paulsen have written the most readable and insightful introduction to the U.S. Constitution since the days of Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story, in 1840. This book is a must read for anyone trying to learn about the U.S. Constitution.”—Steven G. Calabresi, Clayton and Henry Barber Professor of Law, Northwestern University“A splendid introduction to the Constitution—one that takes the text of our nation’s charter seriously and provides illuminating explanations of why its drafters chose the principles, concepts, and language they did for their ‘great experiment’ in republican government and ordered liberty. The Constitution: An Introduction strips away the layers of interpretation that obscure the Constitution’s meaning, enabling readers to encounter the Constitution itself.”—Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, Princeton University“This wonderful work is the best introduction to the United States Constitution available. It does a brilliant job reviewing two-and-one-quarter centuries of American experience. Essential reading for those who still believe in ordered liberty and self-government.”—Stephen B. Presser, Raoul Berger Professor of Legal History, Northwestern University, and author of Recapturing the Constitution“This is a unique and uniquely valuable book. The Paulsens weave historical context, doctrinal reflection, and personal stories into a narrative that explains how the Constitution has become what it is in twenty-first century America. In doing so, the book appeals both to legal scholars and to a popular audience that often struggles to make sense of the constitutional battles of our day. This is the one book that I recommend to anyone who wants a comprehensive and enjoyable overview of the Constitution, what it means, and why it matters.”—John Copeland Nagle, John N. Matthews Professor of Law, University of Notre Dame“Michael Paulsen is one of the most brilliant, respected constitutional scholars of our era. His son, Luke, matches him stride for stride, as a serious lay student of the Constitution and its history. Together, they have produced a truly spectacular book—perhaps the best, single-volume treatment of the Constitution ever written.”—Guy-Uriel Charles, Charles S. Rhyne Professor of Law, Duke University

About the Author Michael Stokes Paulsen is Distinguished University Chair and Professor of Law at the University of St. Thomas, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A graduate of Northwestern University and Yale Law School, he is author of two books and more than ninety articles on various topics of constitutional law.Luke Paulsen is a graduate of Princeton University, where he majored in Computer Science with minors in Classics and Humanities. He currently works as a software engineer in Mountain View, California. This is his first book.

How I wish that I had this book when I was studying the Constitution as a student. I have many other books on the Constitution but this one is the best. It is highly recommended for the general reader who desires to know more about the formation and content of our American Constitution.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. this fine piece of work makes one realize anew By John Mccarthy This books has two parts.Part I delineates the story of the creation, formation, and development of the Constitution, and it does so in an engaging and illuminating way, highlighting its its revolutionary distinctiveness. To me, the most interesting section of Part I is Paulsen's delineation as to how the 'Bill of Rights' became integral to the Constitution.Part II is the history of its how the Supreme Court, decision after decision, and decade after decade has interpreted, reinterpreted, and to no small measure has extrapolated its own policy preferences into the fabric of Constitutional law. In this part of the book, which is by far the most interesting part, Paulsen shows his colors as a strict (as opposed to a 'broad') constitutional lawyer, mincing no words as to when, where and how various Supreme Court justices have - in disregard of the clear meaning of the text itself - have created their own version of the Constitution via a methodology known as 'substantive due process' through which they interpret the constitution in terms of their own policy preferences. In so doing, says Paulsen, with which I agree, they, in effect, take off their judicial robes, and become legislators from their benches on the court. Paulsen sees this as a subversion of the original intent of the Founder's tripartite division of labor between the Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary components of the U.S. Government.Bottom-line, this fine piece of work makes one realize anew, not only how precious our original constitution is, but also, how precarious it is. Yes, it has stood the test of time, now for almost 250 years, but the three branches of our government are dynamic living organisms that can be, and often have been, contorted and subverted by parties in all three branches of government. Nonetheless, the mere fact that our nation and our Constitution has survived is testament and tribute both to the brilliance of the Founders and and to the loyalty and wisdom of countless government leaders. In a sense, this is a demythologizing piece of work, which is a wonderful corrective for many of us, who have tended to view the the history of the Supreme Court as far more linearly uplifting than it has actually been.Bravo to the Paulsen's, both father and son, who wrote this fine book.

By Ron The framers developed a radical new structure for government then left it to succeeding generations to make it work. This book documents some of the key issues that led to our current view of the constitution. The authors are able to explain the history and cultural environment in a way that is both informative and entertaining. If you want a deeper understanding of the constitution and its evolution this is the book to read.

Clear descriptions of knots and their uses By G Although not an expansive collection of every knot in the world, this book contains a library of many useful knots for nearly every fishing application. It's descriptions of the knots are clear and illustrated quite nicely. It certainly contains more knots than I would ever use in my lifetime. If you're looking for every obscure knot in the universe, look elsewhere. If you want a simple description of knots with clear illustrations, then you've found a winner with this book. It's one that I will refer back to for many years.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Good info bad black on black pictures By BKX In knot tying I would definitely say that a picture is worth 1,00 words. The pictures are horrible. They are in black and white which wouldn't be that bad, but they decided to use a black background along with black rope to show you how to tie a lot of the knots. You can't distinguish between the rope and the background half the time. I would not suggest wasting your money on this. You are better off googling the knots and learning them at home. They have way better animated videos on how to tie which ever knot you are looking for online.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Complete Book of Fishing Knots, Lines, and Leaders By Enzio V. Saalfeld Nice book. BUT - I don't agree to be "complete" book for knots and information. Nice pictures, but again lack of knot varities or quantities. Some knots are complicated and don't show detail information or enough steps to finish the knot. They are missing some very good and important knots. Again - it's a good "not so comlete" book.
