This new one does not disappoint as Alex Drew finds himself drawn into another situation not of his own making. We get a good dose of murder, love, questionable parentage, ranch living, and Russians almost at the beginning book and it only gets better from there. Alex no longer works for the CIA, but in times of crisis they either want him to get lost or they want him to jump in and save the day. The local sheriff of Santa Luna, New Mexico shows up on Alex’s doorstep looking grim and Alex knows that this is not good. A young man has gotten himself killed and his girlfriend is missing. The sheriff knows that this case may very well exceed his capabilities, but he has all the faith in the world in Alex. What follows is a power struggle between local law enforcement; state law enforcement; and the FBI with Alex in the middle of the whole mess. As clues add up, the situation becomes clear and Alex confronts the one person who knows the truth as time ticks away for the kidnapped girl. The good guys put up a heck of a fight until the end, with some people happy and some not. This is an easy one day read but do not let the size fool you because every page brings more excitement. The author throws humor in at strategic places and makes the characters seem so real. Pet lovers will get a kick out of Alex’s dog Joe, who deals with an issue of his own. Alex does not forget his sidekick, though; as he takes time to investigate a clue that just may solve Joe’s mystery. I loved this book and I recommend it for readers who enjoy steady action and unconventional crime fighting.

We begin in the small town of Santa Luna, New Mexico where everyone knows their neighbors and often help each other out. Alex Drew is retired CIA and happily working on his cattle ranch when one day he gets a call from the local sheriff asking for help on a murder case. A local high school boy has been found shot and his girlfriend missing. Murder is rare in this small town and no one is ready for where it may lead. As we follow Alex through the twists and turns of the story we learn more about small town life and wonder “how well do you really know your neighbors?” Although this is not the first Alex Drew Novel, you don’t have to have read the previous books to know what is going on, although by the end you’ll want to. Weiskircher gives plenty of details about well-established characters that makes you feel as though you know these people personally without ruining the previous books. The characters themselves are well-thought out and full of life and personality. Weiskircher also describes the land in details, especially for those of us who have never been to New Mexico. He fills in the scene with many facts about the local animals, the land, and its history that make you feel like you are actually there. Overall, this a great action-packed novel full of intrigue, a touch of romance, and plenty of twists and turns that lead to an unforgettable ending!

Weiskircher offers a glimpse into the minds and lives of an American west that can all-too-often feel like part of a dying breed By Brian Weiskircher's "One Last Shoe" is a round-trip ticket to small-town, backcountry life -- with mystery, suspense, and action thrown in to sweeten the deal. The sepia-toned, modern-day cowboy theme runs so true that you just might find yourself with an unconscious urge to brush dust off of your boots! Presenting his characters with an honesty not found so commonly in many of our modern-day thrillers, Weiskircher offers a glimpse into the minds and lives of an American west that can all-too-often feel like part of a dying breed.Backing all of this up with a wry sense of humor, the author does a great job of making this novel a page-turner. Rather than allow the more solemn plot points to sit heavily on the reader's mind, the subtle jokes go a long way towards making this an enjoyable AND thought-provoking read; just about anyone who has suffered a loss in their life will be able to relate to Alex, but not without a silver lining to every dark cloud.Minus one star because of a number of grammatical errors throughout the story. What can I say, I'm a stickler for accuracy!Overall, this book will make for a fine read for anyone longing to escape from everyday "city life" into a more relaxed way of thinking and interacting with the world. I'm looking forward to the next Alex Day novel, and if you choose to read this book, I think you will as well!
