I popped in the DVD and quite surprisingly made a beautiful butterfly on the first try! I was able to stop the DVD and replay where needed to ensure that I followed the steps correctly. It was quick and lovely and satisfying, and I can't wait to make my next one! I plan to glue one to a graduation card, or maybe several since they are so simple to make.Thank you Mr. LaFosse, for simplifying this so that even a first time origamist can be successful. I plan on making all of the different styles.

The directions are fairly straightforward, but I was bored after the first three butterfly models. I set it aside for now and will probably return to It again in the future. Overall, it is a good design book for butterfly folds.

I love that this book covers all of these topics in Objective-C as Swift still isn't quite ready for primetime. I've been an iOS developer for many years, and have found this book to still be a must-have desk companion to the Apple documentation. The way the authors explain the topics in this book is very in-depth, instructional, and easy to follow. If you have a question about iOS development, then you need this book. It literally covers everything you need to know.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Worth the time and money By Jeff Overall a great book and I'd definitely recommend it anyone looking to improve their iOS skills. That being said, I think this book is more for people who are comfortable with building apps and writing Objective-C code rather than beginners. The chapters come with sample projects, but they are mostly complete so it's not like other books that guide you through step by step building an app. Instead, the book takes the approach of walking you through the code that is already written. Each chapter stands on its own so you can cherry pick the high priority chapters and then come back to the others whenever you want.If you are looking for a book that guides you through writing a bunch of different sample apps, then this is not the book for you. However, if you are looking to expand your skill set and learn some new frameworks, I'd absolutely recommend picking it up!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By Michael V. Great explanations, and everything is done in Objective-C! This is amazing!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good choice for parents. You need further reading By MRL The first chapter of the book follows a tradition of other Pack books about Raspberry Pi and describes the system and how to set it up.In the second chapter, the author introduces the main programming language featured in the book: Scratch. This chapter represents a good introduction to the language and to program a simple animation, while the next one goes deeper on the language, using another game as an example. The fourth chapter deals with Python. I must admit that, in my opinion, this chapter aims to cover too many subjects at once. It might prove to be difficult for the reader to absorbe all the information provided. But if the reader manages to keep up with everything, there are a lot of useful examples and all the main features of Python are discussed. In the fifth chapter, the user is guided through creating a game that is programmed in Python, and the author shows how to create a simple game controller, building it from scratch. After this, there’s a chapter that focuses on using Google Maps inside a Python program and teaches how to personalize a program adding buttons and other widgets to it.The last chapter focuses on how to play notes and songs using Sonic Pi. Readers will understand how to do it via simple commands, writing a program that acts as a complete composer. The entire book is full of really interesting examples, but I am under the impression that it shows the readers the pros and cons of different technologies without going deeper in any of them. A little more that 120 pages can’t be enough to discuss all the fascinating topics mentioned in the book. The book doesn’t seem to be suitable for kids, but it would be a good choice for parents who want to learn to program captivating games, maybe to share them with their children. In this way, it can be wonderful choice, but if you want to continue to program games, you are bound to need further reading, at least about Scratch and Python.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great intro for kids getting into software and hardware By Gopinath Palaniappan I had a couple of older versions of Raspberry Pi's lying around. I was wondering if I could let my 11yr old tinker with dad's favorite inexpensive SBC. Thanks to +Packt Publishing and +Fahad Siddiqui for some great books to help bootstrap the kid. Here's my review of the books.Raspberry Pi Projects for Kids - Second Edition"Leverage the power of programming to use the Raspberry Pi to create awesome games"Author: Daniel BatesAs the name suggests, its a book for kids. You don't need any prior experience to use the book. Hence its perfect for a kids new to Raspberry Pi. You do need a Raspberry Pi to enjoy all the hardware projects, but I realized after reading the book that it does a decent job introducing kids to Scratch and Python. In fact you don't need the Raspberry Pi for the first 4 chapters. You can learn Scratch and Python programming without it.Here's a rough breakdown of the chapters:* C1 : Includes basic setup of Raspberry Pi, installation of software on Raspberry Pi* C2 : Introduces Scratch programming* C3 : You make your own Angry Birds game in Scratch* C4 : Introduces you to Python* C5 : Make your own game controller and program it using Python* C6 : GUI application, Google maps* C7 : Sonic Pi application to teach musicI let my kid read the book. Since he was already familiar with Scratch, it was easy for him to zip thru till Chapter3. He kind of got lost in the middle of Chapter4. The paradigm shift into a non visual programming language was like a jolt for him. There was nothing to drag and drop. Too many concept to grasp in one sitting.I asked him to skip the chapter to the next. Chapter 5 started of interestingly with building of a game controller with some handy office supplies. My son was exited to create his own version using play-dough and some conducting tape. But he didn't have the patience to work on the code. I jumped in and filled in to get the project working. We skipped Chapter6 as well and moved on to another favorite part of the book, to create music with code. My son goes to Piano classes and recently figured out how to play STAR WARS theme song. He was so exited to code that into Sonic Pi and hear his favorite music play.Over all it was a fun experience. It even included code samples on Packt Publishing website. On the positive side, its exactly what I needed a quick jumpstart for my kid. On the downside, I wish it had a little more hands-on with Raspberry Pi hardware, rather than focus on software alone. The later chapters were also hard for my son to follow along. But thats a good thing..it will be something he can revisit in an year and find it fun to work on.I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get your kids jumpstarted on programming or getting introduced to hardware. For $35 Raspberry Pi is an affordable way to let your kid introduced to computers...let them tinker and make mistakes.. thats how they learn and thats how I learned growing up.Link to the books:http://www.amazon.com/dp/1785281526 [$11.99 kindle/$24.99 print]https://www.packtpub.com/hardware-and-creative/raspberry-pi-projects-kids-second-edition [$19.99 ebook/$24.99 print]

This book is great for an introduction to the Raspberry Pi By Jaume Aragay Badia The book begins with the installation process of the operating system on the memory card and also a list of the most common difficulties and their solution. On all the chapters the text offers the basic information needed but also links external references for extra information on the topics covered. After the Raspberry Pi is working properly, we meet Scratch, a graphic language that allows you to make your first programs assembling graphic blocks like with LEGO. This way you don't have to care about writing code properly. There is no code to write, you just assemble the orders to form a program. With Scratch you begin with simple animations and after that you make your own Angry Birds Game.On the next chapter you use Python. Python is a language with an easy syntax that has much more possibilities that Scratch. You will use structures like IF-ELSE to make branches in your programs to reach new heights in your programming skills. Then you use a physical controller to interact with the Raspberry Pi board to broaden even more the possibilities. After that you interact with external resources like Google Maps to make an interactive map of your city. The last chapter moves in a different direction to use Sound in the Raspberry Pi to see new opportunities. As I said before, this book is great for introduction to the possibilities of the Raspberry Pi board and also offers branches to new sources of information to broaden the knowledge on the topic. Very clearly written and explained.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Does not meet my needs. By George Mitchell This book has several problems that make it a poor choice for someone trying to learn the technologies it purports to teach. In no particular order, they are:1) The code is presented in top-down order instead of bottom-up. This means that you're working on the presentation layer first, before the data you're going to present, or the methods you need to access that data, exist. The upshot is that you have to get all the way through a chapter before you find out whether you've made a mistake (or mistakes) along the way, and then if the project doesn't work, you have a much harder debugging project than if you had started from the bottom and been able to check your progress frequently along the way.2) There is very little explanation of what's going on under the covers, or of how the interactions between the different layers works. In a Web application, with HTML and JavaScript happening on the client, C# code on the server, and a database backend, there is a LOT of complexity even in a sample application, and the programmer needs to understand what's happening if they're going to move on and build their own projects. "Create this file here and put this code in it" just can't convey that understanding.3) In many cases, the actions required to configure the development environment and add resources are described without consideration of logical flow; this means the reader who is trying to code along with the book gets to a step like, "Right-click the Scripts folder and select the Add submenu followed by New Folder. Once the new folder is created, create a new JavaScript file called AuthorFormViewModel.js", and then has to track backward in the text to find out what the folder was supposed to be named. (This is a representative example from the text, there are many others like it.) In some cases, necessary steps are apparently completely missing.4) When refactoring of existing code files is required, sometimes the necessary code changes are highlighted in the book, but sometimes the reader is presented with the final code without highlights, forcing the reader to compare the new code line-by-line with the existing file, a time-consuming and error-prone activity. Even worse, sometimes the new code is presented as a snippet, with no clear indication of where it fits in the file, or whether it is a replacement of or addition to existing code.5) The sample code associated with the book (downloadable from github) contains only the final versions of the projects created in the book. With the significant refactoring that happens in each chapter of previous work, this means that there is no way to compare what you have at the end of, say, Chapter 5, with a working version of the project at that stage, and much of the code you put into the project during Chapter 5 has been removed or replaced with completely new code. The author clearly has a great deal of experience with his subject matter. However, I suspect that in this case, that's part of the problem, because he doesn't appear to have an understanding of what a less-experienced developer will need to know, or in what order they will need to learn it, and the result is that the book is a disorganized mess. For the record, I've been working in the software business since the early '90s, building network and Internet solutions. I am primarily a tester, but I've done a fair amount of programming along the way, so I'm neither a complete neophyte nor a guru. I *should* be right smack in the target demographic for a book like this, but it's not remotely meeting my needs.

17 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Pretty disappointing. By Ivan C. Wiegand I'm very frustrated with this book. After completing chapter 8, the application doesn't work properly. After wasting days trying to troubleshoot, I went in search of the code to download, which I found on a github repo. I cloned the repo and loaded the project in Visual Studio. Turns out the problems I was having are IN THE PROJECT still. That means the tutorials in this book just don't work, in the end and you're left to figure it out, which I gave up on. I learned very little with this book, except how to use KnockoutJS, which is pretty cool but there are free tutorials on how to use it. The author flies through the chapters with little explanation. It seems you're meant to just copy down the code and then it doesn't even work. While I wouldn't say don't buy this book, I'll say don't buy it if you're looking for a beginning to intermediate book on ASP.NET MVC, this book isn't for you. It expects you to know MVC very well.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Nice By Andrew J. Fleming EditI was able to find my issue (with some special help) and it turns out that MVC 5.2.3 is required! I just jumped right in from VS 2013 and the version of MVC is 5.0. Once I updated, everything was seamless. Sure, having to work a little bit backwards was a bit strange, but I jumped around the pages so much that it didn't really matter.=======================The project in chapter 6 simply does not work. It will not save a new author without an error. Specifically self.author in AuthorFormViewModel.validateAndSave contains null values. The form parameter has the correct values. I ended up adding self.author.firstName = form[1].value; self.author.lastName = form[2].value; self.author.biography = form[3].value;under self.author.__RequestVerificationToken = form[0].value to make it work but I am not sure if this is the "correct" way to do it and it seems hackish. I want to give this book a higher rating, but little stuff like this can make following along difficult.

The Classical Reader: A Comprehensive Reading Guide for K-12 Students, by Leslie Rayner, Christopher Perrin PhD

Review This booklet divides the K-12 experience into parts, according to the classical education model. Books worth your child's time to read are listed for each step of their education. Not all books will appeal to each child, but exposing them to these great titles will give children a very well rounded literary experience. It is perfect for the home schooled child, practical for a private school education, and instructive for the classical school model. Space is available at the end of each section to record other titles your child reads. A column is included to check off those titles that have been read. This is also a fine spot to record the date. In this way, the booklet can serve as a life long journal of books read. You will recognize many titles at the high school level as timeless classics! It is an ambitious list! The books preface helps to explain its objectives and is worth reading. --M. Bey (review of previous version)

Great resource for "homeschoolers" and "after schoolers" investing in their children with excellent literature By J'sMom Great way for me to keep track of books I have read with my 8 year old son. Excellent book recommendations for K up through high school. Also recommended reading list for parents wanting to learn more about classical education. A must for homeschoolers and even after schoolers who want to read excellent literature with their children.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Incomplete Lists By Anne from Baltimore Most homeschoolers I know, including myself, are continually looking for reading lists with ideas for books their children can and should read. A good friend of mine gave me this book to peruse and asked me my opinion of it. I read through all of the lists in the books and found it to be problematic. It tries to do too much in a small space. The lists are divided into K, Lower Grammar (1-3), Upper Grammar (4-6), Rhetoric (7-9) and Dialectic (10-12). Within the lists, books are classified by genre and then by level (1-3--easy, normal, challenging).I discovered as I read this book that I would not recommend it for several reasons.1. There is almost no realistic fiction in this book. I only found 2 books--From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankenwiler and Bridge to Terabithia in the 4-9 lists. Dickens is considered realistic fiction by these authors.2. The way the books were leveled didn't seem appropriate for several books. So, if you do purchase this book, don't depend on the levels. Wind in the Willows was given a 1 for grades 4-6. Wind in the Willows has an enormous amount of vocabulary that is appropriate for a much higher reading level (7th or 8th grade), though the story line is appropriate for a much younger child. It is good for grades 4-6, but is not an easy reading level. I don't consider the Lord of the Rings Trilogy appropriate reading level wise for grades 4-6. There were many other books that I did not think were either as hard or easy as the authors judged them to be. The Redwall series was rated as easy for grades 4-6, I think--I was quite surprised by this! Redwall is a great series for advanced readers in grades 4-6--Scholastic gives the book Redwall a reading level of 7.8, which means it would definitely not be "easy" for a 4th grade reader.3. The Giver Series, Ender's Game, Science Fiction (except for the Perelandra Series) were notably missing. None of Cynthia Voit's books were included for older ages. The lists also did not give a well rounded education about the world. The older lists focused primarily on European literature and didn't seem to include books about Asia, Africa, and South America. I did not notice books about the Civil Rights Movement in the US either. Maniac Magee and Hatchet--two classic middle school reads were not included.4. The lack of realistic fiction to help kids make sense of the world they are living in stood out to me. Homecoming (by Cynthia Voigt), Paper Things, Flipped, The View from Saturday, and Hope was Here are some examples of good modern-day realistic fiction.5. Harry Potter, books 1-7 were all lumped together for grades 4-6. Books 1-4 are understandable, but after that the books start getting much darker and are more appropriate for older children, I think.6. Lastly, the older lists for grades 7-9 and 10-12 didn't include a lot of what I'd call "fun" books. They are scholarly classics. So, if that's the kind of list you're looking for, then you'll find it here. The list for grades 10-12 did not seem to include many books that would appeal to most girls I know.Rather than purchasing this book, I'd send you over to Gladys' Hunts books: Honey for a Teen's Heart and Honey for a Child's Heart. These are much thicker books and include a ton more helpful information. The book for Teen's is very helpful once your child hits a 5th grade reading level (no matter the age) because she rated books by both reading level and maturity. I do recommend that you purchase new editions of these books and not older ones, though.Reading lists are helpful and if you want a list of just the classics, you'll find it here. Just watch out for how it groups books and rates them for reading level. You'll probably find that you have to make those decisions yourself for any given book.
