The Center for Robotic Research takes quality assurance very seriously. Doctor Peter Hawthorne's newest model, the Empathy 5, may finally have achieved true artificial intelligence--the first machine worthy of being called "alive". But before these AI units can be certified for mass production, they must undergo intense psychological and emotional trials. After all, when you build a machine, you must try and test it to its very limits. Even to its breaking point. This is the full novel edition and is an expansion of the original short story first written for The Robot Chronicles.

Dr. Hawthorne is working for the Center for Robotic Research in Connecticut, trying to develop the worlds' most sophisticated artificial intelligence. But this A.I. also needs to be the safest, the most stable and most importantly, it needs to be controlled. The eventual goal is that it will be used to help fight in the conflict against China. Andrew, the latest iteration of their A.I., is a gentle robot who enters a dream program, simply exploring what it's like to be more human and wanting to revel in its joys. But darkness encroaches as Dr. Hawthorne's true agenda slowly becomes clear and Andrew’s benevolent personality is pushed to its psychological brink as the brutal testing methods used on Andrew become increasingly sickening & horrific. When it becomes clear that Hawthorne won’t get what he needs from Andrew, he creates a new A.I., Edward, whose aggression levels are dialed up in the hopes he will be the final version that Hawthorne needs to create robot soldiers that kill without compunction. But Edward turns out to be more malicious than intended, as his anger begins to overtake him and he becomes psychotic in his desire for vengeance upon his creator. In the meantime, Hawthorne’s ex, Shelly, having left Hawthorne after disapproving of his methods and lack of ethics in his work, takes a job in China. But while she is across the world, Edward somehow brings her into his nefarious and deadly plan to plunge the entire world into war!As things spiral wildly out of control, this thriller goes through a lot of surprising twists and turns, pushing your adrenaline to the max by the time you reach the end. It goes from emotionally heart-wrenching in the artificial intelligence development of Andrew and Edward to combative, as Hawthorne and Shelly are caught up in this explosive conflict brought about with Edward unleashed. Equally powerful is the cogent arguments by the robots about the merits and pitfalls of humanity and how those qualities are deftly explored in the Dreamscape and in their character development, especially Andrew. Most surprising is how strongly Edward, in his rage, believes that humans, as the dominant species, should die and why robots are superior. And Andrew is truly the star of the show, as he defends the ways of humanity and eloquently describes how an A.I. must have a conscience while also effectively describing what truly makes us human. In many ways, Andrew is more human than his creators in his nobility, his actions and in his development over the course of the novel. With all of these intriguing characters brought together, the situation escalates dangerously while the future of artificial intelligence, and their lives, are on the line as everyone struggles to survive the clash of robots versus humans.Empathy for Andrew is an expansion of the short story that originally appears in The Robot Chronicles (The Future Chronicles) and has been wonderfully expanded into a full-length novel, bringing this story full circle in a highly-charged and fast-paced adventure. Please note that I was given an Advanced Readers Copy of this eBook. By Preston Leigh In July of 2014, Samuel Peralta released what would become the first Future Chronicles title, The Robot Chroncies. The Robot Chronicles has an amazing line up: Hugh Howey, Matthew Mather, David Adams, Ann Christy, Nina Croft, WJ Davies, Patrice Fitzgerald, Deirdre Gould, Jason Gurley, A.K. Meek, Samuel Peralta, Edward W. Roberston, and Endi Webb. Honestly, I bought this anthology because of Jason Gurley and Hugh Howey, at the time I was not familiar with any of the other authors.I was satisfied with this anthology after the first five stories. The sixth story was Empathy For Andrew by a WJ Davies. Once I finished reading it I had to stop, I had to come up for air. This short story is one of the best short stories that I have ever read.I found Davies on Facebook and told him how much I loved his short story. We started talking about possibilities for what could happen with the different characters and the plot. The next thing I know, Davies is telling me how he is going to continue the story.Months went by, but I never forgot about Empathy For Andrew. Finally, on September 30, 2015, Empathy For Andrew was released as a novel. I was in the middle of a book and did not want to stop, but I knew this would be the next book I would read. I finished the story I was reading on October 9, 2015, and started Empathy For Andrew the next day.I had really high expectations for this story.Davies will grab you from the very beginning and not let go of you until the very last page.He does a great job with the characters. He makes it really easy to like certain characters and hate others. There are some characters that I did not like but by the end of the story my opinion started to change. The tag line on the front of the book says, “Who is more human?” There were times I had to remind myself that the robots were robots and not human. But then you start to question things because the robots could think and feel just like a human. The story is full of twists and turns that will leave you guessing until the very end. You will find that the pages fly by.There are authors that are known for certain books: Hugh Howey with Wool, Michael Bunker with Pennsylvania, and Ernest Cline with Ready Player One. WJ Davies will be known for Empathy For Andrew.Every person has a Top 5 or Top 10 books that they love and can’t get enough of. Ready Player One is what I compare others to when I give them a rating. I devoured Ready Player One as I read it. It entertained me and I wanted to read it again as soon as I was done. Empathy For Andrew is the same way. It is only 186 pages long, so some might be able to read it in one day, but those that can’t are guaranteed to lose sleep.Empathy For Andrew will always stay on my top shelf. It will remain one of my all time favorites.Leighgendary Rating: 10/10 StarsFor more reviews and author interviews check out www.leighgendarium.com

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It had potential By Paula Dean This started out with an interesting idea and intrigued me enough with the sample to purchase it for the low price. I like to support good, self-published authors. However, soon after the sample portion, it devolved quickly into a very cheesy, action "thriller". Having your main character think or say things like "It seemed like a plot pulled out of some B-grade science-fiction movie." or "You sound like a bad PSA." does not make it better or self-aware. It only makes it more cheesy by pointing out the obvious, mind-numbing plot and monologue issues. I gave it 2 stars for the concept but the author needs to mature his writing style. It seems that he had a good short story but wasn't ready or didn't take the proper time to take it full-length. True character development and world building takes time.
