A fast-paced "New Pulp" version of classic WWI aerial combat stories suitable for both young readers and old pulp fans By Bob Deis Ron Fortier is one of the leading figures in the realm of "New Pulp," both as a writer and as a publisher (via his Airship 27 imprint). He has a vast knowledge of the original pulp fiction digest magazines and comics and has been a prolific writer of pulp-inspired comic stories and novels for many years. In some cases Fortier has written new stories and books about classic pulp characters, such as Captain Hazzard. NIGHTHAWK: BURNING SKIES, features a new character Fortier created, a World War I ace pilot known as Nighthawk who is also a master spy. And, though the character is new, he and the story would have fit perfectly in one of the aerial combat pulps that were popular in the '30s and '40s. Like the stories in those magazines, there are plenty of action-filled dogfight scenes. There are also great villains for Nighthawk to go up against, including a ruthless German pilot and his beautiful, equally ruthless daughter, who is also a spy and a pilot. The plot, involving a new incendiary weapon created by a German scientist, roars along quickly to a satisfyingly explosive conclusion. Along the way, NIGHTHAWK: BURNING SKIES provides plenty of action and some semi-graphic violence, but it's never over-the-top shock schlock. And the book has no four-letter words or gratuitous sex scenes, so it's suitable for both young readers -- and for old pulp fiction fans who are still young at heart. I'm the latter and I enjoyed this book a lot.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Aces Up! By Doctor Panic The author brings us a new flying pulp hero in Nighthawk. He is a master spy as well as a flying ace. our hero has colorful accomplices as well in Brix, Dusty, and his butler slash all around helper Braxton. The story centers around the German's getting hold of a way to use a flame thrower from a plane and introduces us to several villains along the way, all top notch and well developed by Mr. Fortier. The book has great battle scenes, some cunning planning, a little bit of chivalry, and is an all around great read. I usually keep from giving too much detail in reviews as I dont want to give away the story too much. This is a romp roaring good time so get yourself a copy and enjoy it, highly entertaining!
