Cooper knows he's getting close when Geri is kidnapped, but when she resurfaces in Washington and goes on a killing spree, he knows it isn't her. An intriguing detective story with scifi elements and a traditional feel By Tonja Drecker I read the first book in this series (Pop Travel), enjoyed it and looked forward to diving into this one. And although the first book did make it easy to know where each character was coming from, SIMULATION can be read as a stand-alone.This story starts two years after Cooper uncovers the truth behind the disappearances due to Pop Travel. Cooper has broken relations with Geri, and although I found this a little disheartening, the change in their relationship added a nice spring board for a new type of tension between them. The book is told mostly from three point of views: Geri, Cooper and Crews. Each of them has a very different voice and the switch from one to the other flows well, never with a moment's confusion. As they each pursue their own directions and interests, it becomes clear that somehow they're all headed toward the same central point, but the intrigue and mystery is complicated enough to keep the exact details unclear until the very end. I enjoyed following each of their steps, wondering what was really behind the investigations. And I loved to hate the 'bad guy' because they most certainly deserved it.There's a wonderful new character, Aimee, who adds a fresh breath of air with her positive, cheery attitude. She clashes nicely with Geri creating a fun and much needed lightness to the otherwise serious atmosphere. Unlike the others, she's full of surprises and adds an entire new area of mystery on the side.Like in the first book, there's a nice balance between action and information. Twists and turns are masterfully placed, making it hard to guess what is coming next or where the investigations are headed. And just when it seems that everything is resting on digging up more clues, the heroes find themselves in dangerous situations which even they aren't sure they'll make it through. I didn't want to put this down and was genuinely curious as to where things were headed next. This is an intriguing detective story sprinkled with exciting science fiction elements which leaves one guessing until the very end. I enjoyed the read and can't wait to see what comes next.I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

That’s not a bad thing, I actually quite like it By Alysha Terry Warning: This review will contain spoilers for “Pop Travel” the first book in this series and possibly a few spoilers for this book. Nothing major for this book, but just in case that was your warning. It will also be a bit more scattered than usual because I’m just going to talk about things that popped (hehe) out at me in one way or another. :-)Two years after J. L. Cooper helped expose a massive cover up concerning pop travel, he’s still doing the private investigator gig. He and Geri tried dating, and it didn’t work out so well. Geri did manage to get him to move to Atlanta, so he is no longer living in the middle of nowhere. Pop travel is now safe thanks to being offline for a year while Hasan did massive testing and lots of tweaks, but Cooper still prefers to fly rather than pop.By the way, Geri is a bit of a dork in a few spots. That’s not a bad thing, I actually quite like it, but it’s it so randomly out of place with what else we see in her personality. I can easily see how she and Cooper had issues in their relationship. Something that really bothered me about Geri, though, were the mentions of how important she was while Hasan was fixing the transport stations for pop travel. What?! She’s completely useless with anything science-y in this book, but she was vital to fixing pop travel? How does that make any sense. There was one passage that sort of implied she was there more for security purposes, but it wasn’t explicitly stated and other passages implied that she was actually helping fix the transport stations. Besides, even if she was there for security purposes, wouldn’t there be someone better suited for that job? Like actual body guards? I imagine that she is overqualified for that position…Speaking of Hasan, he appears again and he’s as hyper-active and bouncy as ever. We meet newcomer Aimee, and she would likely get smacked if I had to deal with her. Actually, Aimee is probably the character most like me if she also imagines killing people behind her happy smile; she’s optimistic, peppy, and smiles constantly. While there aren’t any indications that she’s also dark on the inside, I’m hoping that she is.By the way, are you familiar with the Three Laws of Robotics? No? Really? You read sci-fi and aren’t familiar with the Three Laws? Bah! Go away! Okay, you don’t actually have to go away, but here. These are the Three Laws.Isaac Asimov’s “Three Laws of Robotics”A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.Why do I bring up the Three Laws? Because I can’t recall coming across too many books with androids that didn’t in some way reference the Laws or have their own versions of “robots can’t hurt humans” in their story. In this book, androids can cause harm, although they aren’t able to make their own decisions. They are completely under the control of whatever human owns them (or has hacked them) and if, for example, Crews tells his androids to take down Wells, they won’t hesitate. I find this an amusing switch from how androids/robots are typically portrayed.Oh, and while it wasn’t really expanded upon much (too much dry history makes for a dull book), I did enjoy the mentions of the Tex-Mex war. It sounds delicious!I give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars because, while I did really like it, things just seemed a bit too contrived at times. Also, there were several errors in this book including some wonky formatting. That’s not to say that I won’t continue reading the series if it continues, because I certainly will and I’m looking forward to the next book, but hopefully the editing tightens up.NOTE: This book was provided to me by the publisher Curiosity Quills in exchange for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An original and dynamic thriller By Christine Rains FBI Agent Geri Harper is saddled with a new agent who's cute and peppy and totally annoys her. They're given what seems to be a mundane case about DNA sequencing gone wrong, but it leads them to something much larger. It also has Geri crossing paths with her ex, Detective Cooper. Seems their cases might actually be linked. When they uncover possible evidence that a new congressman might be a simulation (an android replica of someone), things turn from dangerous to deadly.A fantastic second book in the thrilling Pop Travel series. The originality of the story and characters hooked me in the first book. We still have the extraordinary writing and view of the not so distant future, and of course, the awesome characters, but this plot had extra oomph to it! It's fast-paced and suspenseful, and barely left me time to catch my breath.I love the dynamics of Geri and Cooper's relationship, even when they're not together! I'm happy to see Hasan back with all his eccentricities, and I particularly liked the new agent, Aimee. She's young yet highly intelligent, and has a few surprises up her sleeve. Literally! As for the villain, Crews, grrr! He's one of those ones I love to hate. Rotten through and through.A glowing 5 stars for Simulation. I can't wait for more from Tara Tyler!

Where the first book left off, with the mystery of whether her husband is a, oh never mind – I don’t want to spoil the story. From the ending of that first book, which by the way was a very satisfying ending, I wanted to know more. I was compelled to buy the second book, not because the first was left incomplete, but because there was more to read about this wonderful story and Amie’s adventure. And so off I went, back to the bushes, the sounds, the other simpler way, and more dangerous, of living, relishing every word, every page, every nuance from the characters driven forward in lush scenes. There was no lack to tension to glue and propel me. This is a smartly written work of fiction where Africa is brought to life as if another character in the telling of the narrative. I don’t want to recount the story, suffice it to say it did not disappoint and I look forward to more from the very talented Lucinda E Clarke

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fantastic adventure ride through Africa. By Julie Haigh I had just finished Lucinda E Clarke's Amie Book 1 when she very kindly sent me a pre-publication copy of her newest offering in her Amie fiction series. I was straight in-it was another quick, easy, action-packed start. I was soon likening Lucinda to 'sort of like a female Wilbur Smith'! Having never ventured to Africa before, I loved learning new things; there's creatures mentioned in here that I've never even heard of so I was absolutely loving all the interesting info about them. I loved this survival story-e.g. ideas like sweeping the area clean and tidy with branches-and the reasons why they do this. It made for amazing and really interesting reading how they do things. This is a very intelligently written book; many of these creatures and their characteristics, outdoor cooking methods etc. and reasons for doing things I've seen on the TV programme QI and this book developed further what I remembered from there. This is an entertaining book but it also makes you think, you learn something and get more out of it. This really is a fascinating book with a mine of information about the local trees, plants, wildlife etc. Excellent for someone who has never been to this part of the world, I loved learning about all this. I was so impressed with this! The writing is so knowledgeable. This is a brilliant book with lots of rich knowledge about the animals and creatures. Such a vivid, clear picture was created in this book with amazing facts about the wildlife. It really was a book to be savoured for me! It was absolutely fascinating-my partner must have been totally fed up with me while I was reading this! He's a bit of a mine of information and I kept saying to him: "Here's another-have you heard of this animal or this type of tree?" etc-I was just so bursting with pleasure at finding out about all these new things and discussing them with him. A real reading EXPERIENCE-not just a book. How absolutely charming reading about the elephants and baby elephants. 'Africa in splendour'-a great quote from the book and it seems to fit this book as a whole. It was exciting and suspenseful and kept me guessing. The descriptions are brilliant and there are great word choices. You can see exactly what's happening in your mind's eye. There are plenty of unexpected happenings, action and adventure and it runs at a cracking pace. A real rollercoaster of a read with some gritty and powerful scenes. This was FANTASTIC! There are many action-packed chapters, real edge-of-your-seat stuff. I think it would make a great movie (the two Amie books together perhaps?). This is a rich and colourful tapestry of the land and is absolutely filled with animals-there are mentions of lions, zebra, giraffe, antelope, hippopotamus, crocodile and much more-it's just so fascinating learning all about the different animals and their different characteristics. Some really tense moments and the excitement continues throughout the book. It builds to a breathtaking conclusion. There have been many ups, downs and unexpected twists. Wow, five stars from me, no question at all. Has it left room for another book? I think so. It has ended and resolved things, tied up loose ends but there can be more and I do hope there is. Pure excellence.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Amie and the Child of Africa. By Maria An African adventure with wide appeal. I'd especially recommend it to lovers of adventure/suspense, readers who enjoy books about other countries and cultures and readers interested in contemporary issues. This book works perfectly as a stand alone but I suggest reading Amie:An African Adventure first if only for the wonderful character arc as Amie leaves her family in England and arrives in Africa for the first time.In this book Amie again courts great danger as she becomes caught up in the unrest of civil war. I won't ruined the story but Amie joins with an unlikely group of people as she uses great ingenuity to save one little girl. The sights and sounds of Africa are the highlight of this book, both the beauty and brutality in the natural world and the people of Africa. Suspense is maintain throughout and there are some wonderful characters. Despite the seriousness of the situation there are lighter moments of humour at the situations Amie gets herself into.An enjoyable fast paced read

Preview: “Oh, okay,” I started. “If reading or writing is a problem for you, I could fill it out for you. All you have to do is answer some questions.” “No, while women are more than capable of reading, I can’t.” “Why?” Katherine stood and walked towards one of the hallways by the stairs, “I must cancel the pizza delivery boy. We cannot eat in front of a guest.” “My apologies. I didn’t realize how late it was. Eat your pizza. I can come back tomorrow.” “Oh, darling, we don’t eat pizza.” Katherine spoke and then continued down the hall.

Hunting the Hunter (Volume 1), by Collin Fairlie

Review "Author Collin Fairlie does a wonderful job of writing a story that you understand what is going on, but at the same time he never actually comes out and says it in black and white, you have to read into what is being said, and that is part of what makes this book such fun... Definitely a must-read." - Michelle Randall for Readers' Favorite

Excerpt from Sketches of the Life and Indian Adventures of Captain Samuel Brady: A Native of Cumberland County, Born 1758, a Few Miles Above Northumberland, PaWho has not heard of Brady - captain of the spies? - Of his perilous adventures by field and flood? - Of his hair-breadth escapes in the imminent deadly breach? - Of his chivalrous courage? - Of his unmatched personal activity? - Yet where do we read his history? It is to be learned only from the aged settlers of Western Pennsylvania, or peradventure from a time-worn Ranger; - for a few of Brady's warriors still survive.Actuated by a desire to preserve from oblivion, such portions of his life and actions as may yet be obtained, I have made several attempts to procure from individuals the most interesting events in his military career, but hitherto without success. At length an aged, friend has kindly offered to furnish such details as an intimate acquintance with Captain Brady enables him to give. We trust that the subject will be deemed of such interest, that others will contribute their mite, and that an historian will yet be found to place Brady of the Rangers by the side of Wayne, Marion, Lee of the Legion, and other distinguished patriots whose memories are immortal. He is emphatically the hero of Western Pennsylvania; and future bards of this region, when time shall have mellowed the facts of history, will find his name the personification of all that was fearless and fruitful of resources in the hour of danger. His the step that faultered not - the eye that quailed not, even in the terrific scenes of Indian warfare. Many a mother has quieted the fears, and lulled to sleep her infant family, by the assurance that the broad Allegheny, the dividing line between the Indians and Whites, was watched by the gallent captain and his Rangers; and to their apprehensions of death or captivity by the Indians, has replied encouragingly, - "they dare not move on the river, for their lies Brady and the Rangers."John Brady, the father of Captain Samuel Brady, was born in the state of Delaware, A. D., 1733. Hugh Brady, the father of John, had emigrated from Ireland. At a very early period Hugh Brady settled within five miles of where Shippensburg now stands. The country was then a wilderness, thinly settled by Irish emigrants, simple, sincere and religious. Many anecdotes are collected, evincive of this, but they would be out of place here.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I perfer the format, color coding and summaries of Perarson's. I'm a nursing student and I constantly refer to this text and need one that is easy to read and easy to flip to the right section.

Not only does it give information on the classification of the drug and what it does, but it also gives specific nursing interventions as well as important information patients need to know.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A must have By Tyler I am currently a paramedic student and we were required to have a nursing drug guide book for pharm. No two students got the same book and some were very dissatisfied with theirs. I have no such dissatisfaction, this book is great and well worth the money. If you have to do drug profiles like I do this is very helpful, although it will not give you absolutely all the information you will need. To make a drug profile, I use this book, my text book, drugs.com and micro medics. Again, great book to have either going into the medical field (even EMT basic) or as a practicing nurse or paramedic.

“Ruby on Rails™ Tutorial by Michael Hartl has become a must-read for developers learning how to build Rails apps.”

—Peter Cooper, Editor of Ruby Inside

Used by sites as diverse as Twitter, GitHub, Disney, and the Yellow Pages, Ruby on Rails is one of the most popular frameworks for developing web applications, but it can be challenging to learn and use. Whether you’re new to web development or new only to Rails, Ruby on Rails™ Tutorial, Third Edition, is the solution.

Best-selling author and leading Rails developer Michael Hartl teaches Rails by guiding you through the development of three example applications of increasing sophistication, focusing on the fundamental techniques in web development needed for virtually any kind of application. The updates to this edition include simplified installation via a standard development environment in the cloud, use of the default Rails stack throughout, a light-weight testing approach, an all-new section on image upload, and an all-new chapter on account activation and password resets, including sending email with Rails.

This indispensable guide provides integrated tutorials not only for Rails, but also for the essential Ruby, HTML, CSS, and SQL skills you’ll need when developing web applications. Hartl explains how each new technique solves a real-world problem, and then he demonstrates it with bite-sized code that’s simple enough to understand, yet novel enough to be useful. Whatever your previous web development experience, this book will guide you to true Rails mastery.

Ruby on Rails Tutorial: Learn Web Development with Rails (3rd Edition) (Addison-Wesley Professional Ruby), by Michael Hartl

Review

Praise for Michael Hartl’s Books and Videos on Ruby on Rails

“My former company (CD Baby) was one of the first to loudly switch to Ruby on Rails, and then even more loudly switch back to PHP (Google me to read about the drama). This book by Michael Hartl came so highly recommended that I had to try it, and the Ruby on Rails™ Tutorial is what I used to switch back to Rails again.”

—From the Foreword by Derek Sivers (sivers.org)

Formerly: founder of CD Baby

Currently: founder of Thoughts Ltd.

“Michael Hartl’s Rails Tutorial book is the #1 (and only, in my opinion) place to start when it comes to books about learning Rails. . . . It’s an amazing piece of work and, unusually, walks you through building a Rails app from start to finish with testing. If you want to read just one book and feel like a Rails master by the end of it, pick the Ruby on Rails™ Tutorial.”

—Peter Cooper, editor, Ruby Inside

“For the self-motivated reader who responds well to the ‘learn by doing’ method and is prepared to put in the effort, then this comes highly recommended.”

—Ian Elliot, reviewer, I Programmer

“Ruby on Rails™ Tutorial is a lot of work but if you’re careful and patient, you’ll learn a lot.”

—Jason Shen, tech entrepreneur, blogger at The Art of Ass-Kicking

“Michael Hartl’s Ruby on Rails™ Tutorial seamlessly taught me about not only Ruby on Rails, but also the underlying Ruby language, HTML, CSS, a bit of JavaScript, and even some SQL—but most importantly it showed me how to build a web application (Twitter) in a short amount of time.”

—Mattan Griffel, co-founder & CEO of One Month

“Although I’m a Python/Django developer by trade, I can’t stress enough how much this book has helped me. As an undergraduate, completely detached from industry, this book showed me how to use version control, how to write tests, and, most importantly—despite the steep learning curve for setting up and getting stuff running—how the end-result of perseverance is extremely gratifying. It made me fall in love with technology all over again. This is the book I direct all my friends to who want to start learning programming/building stuff. Thank you Michael!”

—Prakhar Srivastav, software engineer, Xcite.com, Kuwait

“It doesn’t matter what you think you will be developing with in the future or what the framework du jour is; if you want to learn how to build something, there is no better place to start than with this tutorial. And for all the ‘non-technical’ people out there who want to see their ideas come to life, who are considering hiring contractors, paying for a class, or ‘founder dating’ in the search for a technical co-founder: stop. Take a step back. Forget about your idea for a short while and immerse yourself in this tutorial to learn what it takes to put something together. You and your software-related projects will be better for it.”

—Vincent C., entrepreneur and developer

“It has to be the best-written book of its type I’ve ever seen, and I can’t recommend it enough.”

—Daniel Hollands, administrator of Birmingham.IO

“For those wanting to learn Ruby on Rails, Hartl’s Ruby on Rails™ Tutorial is (in my opinion) the best way to do it.”

—David Young, software developer and author at deepinthecode.com

“This is a great tutorial for a lot of reasons, because aside from just teaching Rails, Hartl is also teaching good development practices.”

—Michael Denomy, full-stack web developer

“Without a doubt, the best way I learned Ruby on Rails was by building an actual working app. I used Michael Hartl’s Ruby on Rails™ Tutorial, which showed me how to get a very basic Twitter-like app up and running from scratch. I cannot recommend this tutorial enough; getting something up and going fast was key; it beats memorization by a mile.”

—James Fend, serial entrepreneur, JamesFend.com

“The book gives you the theory and practice, while the videos focus on showing you in person how it’s done. Highly recommended combo.”

—Antonio Cangiano, software engineer, IBM

“The author is clearly an expert at the Ruby language and the Rails framework, but more than that, he is a working software engineer who introduces best practices throughout the text.”

—Greg Charles, senior software developer, Fairway Technologies

“Overall, [Hartl’s] video tutorials should be a great resource for anyone new to Rails.”

—Michael Morin, ruby.about.com

“Hands-down, I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get into Ruby on Rails development.”

—Michael Crump, Microsoft MVP

28 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Great Way to Learn Ruby on Rails, for Beginners (like me) and for experienced programmers By Murray Cohen I am not a programmer and I don't know nor have I ever met Michael Hartl. But I warn you, this is going to sound like a paid social media person writing a puff piece for this book, but it's not.By the way, I didn't buy the print edition here. I bought the electronic version from rails tutorial site which is identical. Here's my story: I have been a teacher for ten years. Before that,I managed big media projects and ran a start-up back in the .com boom. I've never programmed. I've built web sites in Dreamweaver, done some Flash, used Wordpress quite extensively and am pretty good at the Adobe Suite (which I teach). But I have NEVER written code, per se.My wife, a college professor, had this brilliant idea: we need to make more money (to pay for a big mortgage, cars, stuff) which could be roughly translated into "you need to make more money."OK, I'm 62 years old and don't think I'm going to find yet another career. But my wife read an article in the NY Times about the need for coders and that age wasn't really a factor. OK, but "why me?" I asked. "Why not you?" "Because you understand all of this tech stuff," my wife said. OK, she's been right before about my career, I'll give it a try. But where to start.I called my friend and neighbor, a CalTech computer science grad who owns a small (14 employees) computer consulting business and invited him to lunch. Of course I brought my career coach (my wife) with me. My buddy, the CalTech guy said that, yes, there is lots of opportunity for coders and went on to say that he thought there was even more opportunity for someone with my tech management experience. So, I was hooked on the idea, too.But how to begin? What languages should I learn? Do I need a bootcamp intensive?I can't do that without knowing if it's something I can do. My friend told me that his company does most of their work with Ruby on Rails and Angular JS. He said that they just hired two new programmers. But they don't hire programmers. They hire math and science grads and give them Michael Hartl's "Ruby on Rails Tutorial" and let them have at it.So, I got the tutorial and the videos and started. And I love it. Not saying I'm going to become a programmer or anything but the lessons are simple, well laid out and Michael explains everything in great detail, including how to set up the development environment on Cloud 9 so you are actually building real applications that you test and launch into a real production environment.I'm about half way through the 12 chapter tutorial now. I find it challenging -- and frustrating at times -- but always engaging. Getting it to work is the real challenge but I find myself going over chapters several times until I figure out where my mistake was. It's a huge puzzle waiting to be solved.I also utilize Michael's "universal algorithm" for solving problems which is "Google the error message." I found with this that there seems to be a critical mass of Michael Hartl devotees out there. Every time I google an error message, I find answers from others who are working on the same chapter in the tutorial that I am.The other thing I really like about how Michael has set this up is that the online version of the book is always current and he also has current code snippets set up on his website. So, for example, Michael may have done the videos with Ruby on Rails 4.0.0 but all of the current code for the latest version (I'm on 4.2.2) is up on his site. This really helps. One wrong character can make the difference between getting it to work and not.As I said, I teach classes in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, etc for a college extension. I find that the adult students who come to my classes have already tried online tutorials and books but they get stuck and they quit. When they get stuck, there's no one to guide them. And they don't yet know enough to find the solutions themselves.I find myself facing the same issues learning Ruby on Rails. But Michael has figured out a way to guide you step by step without having someone to help you. Yes, it would be great to have Michael or another great teacher waiting in the wings to get me over the humps. But I also find that I'm learning a lot solving problems with the "universal algorithm."Another nice thing about starting to learn Ruby on Rails with this book is that I didn't need to commit a huge amount of money and time to get started. What if I didn't like programming and committed $15,000 and 12 weeks to something I couldn't stand? This was an easy, cheap way to get my feet wet, to see if it's something I liked. And, so far, I do!

By Shaun Fahey I've been creating websites for about 16 years, and during that time I've built sites mostly for fun, or helping people get started, when they've not had the money to get started. All I've ever done is front-end stuff, and all I've ever wanted to do is back-end stuff, and for years that's been on my to-do list. At the beginning of this year I made a promise to myself which went something like this, you have 365 days to get your s*** together.I watched hours of tutorials on YouTube and read loads of blog posts about how to build Rails applications, and most of them were completely useless, basically just regurgitating the same thing over-and-over, build a blog in 30 minutes. Rubbish, just totally rubbish. To cut a long story short, when I found the rails tutorial website I was hooked. 3 days after I started the online version I ordered the book from Amazon, when I finished the book I paid for the screencast videos, and I can honestly say it's hands down the best money I have ever spent on technical books in my life. Period. This book is fantastic, it's by far the most up-to-date and detailed introduction into Ruby on Rails, you just can't go wrong. I will soon be finished building 12 application prototypes, each of which was started from Chapter 10, and all of them are different and each one having different features. The features combined will cover most of the things I will need to be a front and back-end developer.I'm soon going to start the book over for the third time and when that's finished, I'll start my new developers website, pick 8 of my favourite application prototypes, rebuild them so they're polished web applications, and then hopefully make some money. None of this would have be possible without the Ruby On Rails Tutorial. Thanks Michael

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. As a beginner, I never felt lost By A Customer This books is fantastic for someone with minimal coding skill. My level of skill was just being able to modify Excel macros I'd copy from the web, but I found this text did an excellent job of walking me through the process of creating a Rails app. One of the strengths of the book is repetition. You iterate through building the same app three times. The first is just a sketch of an idea. The second adds a little more complexity. The third iteration walks you through building a full application. It's not only that, but there's repetition of best practice. I've read other books that show you the best practice once and never show it again. Hartl, I think, assumes many of the tutorial's readers have little coding experience, so reinforces the best practice by repeating the instructions of a good practice, rather than just referencing the good practice as a beginner I probably don't remember. Some of these instructions are now drilled in my mind that I can't forget them. The approach of learning the app building process as the priority over learning the syntax of Rails clicks with me (to be clear, the book does discuss the code quite a bit, but teaching syntax is not the main strategy of the tutorial). While this approach left me a little hazy on the actual language of the Rails framework, it's given me the experience of knowing what I need to look for and learn for myself and make some sense of Rails resources online. It's given me a blueprint of what I should be figuring out when I make my own Rails app.

By Chantal B. as far as college textbooks go i am appreciating their laid back style that allows the student to read the text easily. this way the student is able to understand the material without first being taught it. also, this book is not as large as some other textbooks for other subjects i am taking, making it easily portable, as well as an adequate amount of material to cover. alot of times i hate to buy a book when we only have time to get through part of the chapters in the book.

By Maria Alexandra Upon entering my American Government class, my professor immediately let everyone know that the class would be everything but easy. He claimed that we should not take it as an easy A class and that in order to pass we would need a good American Government book that would cover everything from the types of government to the elections. He ensured that we purchase this book because he claimed that despite it not being the newest edition, it still covered everything he would teach. It arrived two days after I ordered it and proved to be one the most useful textbooks I've ever used, when my teachers notes did not thoroughly explain, I would turn to the book and it would explain everything I needed to know. I would recommend this text to individuals who are taking an American government course that focuses primarily on the election, due to 2016 being an election year, my teacher has chosen to focus on this. Definitely a good text to rent or own.

Pictures from the past powerfully shape current views of the world. In books, television programs, and websites, new images appear alongside others that have survived from decades ago. Among the most famous are drawings of embryos by the Darwinist Ernst Haeckel in which humans and other vertebrates begin identical, then diverge toward their adult forms. But these icons of evolution are notorious, too: soon after their publication in 1868, a colleague alleged fraud, and Haeckel’s many enemies have repeated the charge ever since. His embryos nevertheless became a textbook staple until, in 1997, a biologist accused him again, and creationist advocates of intelligent design forced his figures out. How could the most controversial pictures in the history of science have become some of the most widely seen?             In Haeckel’s Embryos, Nick Hopwood tells this extraordinary story in full for the first time. He tracks the drawings and the charges against them from their genesis in the nineteenth century to their continuing involvement in innovation in the present day, and from Germany to Britain and the United States. Emphasizing the changes worked by circulation and copying, interpretation and debate, Hopwood uses the case to explore how pictures succeed and fail, gain acceptance and spark controversy. Along the way, he reveals how embryonic development was made a process that we can see, compare, and discuss, and how copying—usually dismissed as unoriginal—can be creative, contested, and consequential.             With a wealth of expertly contextualized illustrations, Haeckel’s Embryos recaptures the shocking novelty of pictures that enthralled schoolchildren and outraged priests, and highlights the remarkable ways these images kept on shaping knowledge as they aged.

Haeckel's Embryos: Images, Evolution, and Fraud, by Nick Hopwood

Review "Hopwood’s book is a richly illustrated and staggeringly detailed story of how Haeckel’s embryo pictures came to be, how they were mobilised as resources in scientific and ideological causes, how versions of the grid picture were copied, recopied and modified, how their accuracy was vigorously disputed by some and defended by others, and how they continue to circulate—still relevant and still contentious—today....There is no more focused account of the subtle and complex relationships between scientific images and what they represent."   (London Review of Books)"Rarely have images proved so incendiary as the embryo drawings of nineteenth-century experimental zoologist Ernst Haeckel. In this lavishly illustrated volume, Hopwood traces the chequered history of the sketches, which showed similarities between embryos of higher and lower vertebrates, including humans, at particular points in their development. Haeckel intended the images as support for Charles Darwin's evolutionary theory, but under attack revealed that they were schematics. Hopwood meticulously charts how, despite the controversy, the drawings took on a life of their own." (Nature)"Sumptuous. . . . Hopwood's excellent, thought-provoking book makes us ponder how these erroneous illustrations acquired their iconic status, and, above all, it shines a spotlight on the power of drawings to influence our thinking." (New Scientist)"Hopwood raises important questions (particularly pertinent to the modern era of viral memes) about the teaching of empirical science and the bringing of complex scientific ideas to the public, the 'boundary of popular literature and specialist work,' the relationship between the observer as accurate reporter and as artist, and the line beyond which schematization for didactic or rhetorical effect becomes deliberately misleading." (Publishers Weekly)"Haeckel's Embryos is a magnificent scholarly tour de force...an outstanding piece of work and a delight to study." (Medical History)"Detailed, well documented, and rich with illustrations. It is likely to be of most value to those with interests in developmental biology, embryology, the history of attacks on evolution, or the history of scientific publication." (Library Journal)"Copying — unoriginal, dull, and derivative by definition — can be creative, contested, and consequential in its effects. Hopwood tracks Haeckel’s embryos, some of the most controversial pictures in the history of science, and explores how copying put them among the most widely seen." (Public Domain Review)“This book is fun to read, chock-full of exhaustive detail made palatable by entertaining turns of phrase, word pictures, and puns.… I found myself fully engaged and repeatedly chuckling over Hopwood’s wordsmithery. Then, on practically every page, I was forced to loiter and savor the beauty of the historical plates and images. Through it all, I learned so much. Haeckel’s Embryos is a wonderful book.” (American Biology Teacher)"Haeckel’s Embryos is a big book bursting with ideas about visuality, scientific images, evidence, hypotheses, objectivity, and controversy, with striking pictures...on nearly every page. An important contribution to the history of scientific illustration and visual culture, and a must-read for anyone wishing to form any substantive conclusion about the place of Haeckel and his contributions in evolutionary science and popular culture."   (History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences)"Not only does Hopwood’s book address a broad audience, it also proves engaging throughout its 388 pages due to its numerous images and clarity. Additionally, the book does not appear to be too technical, but in fact is a valuable scientific contribution to the literature on Haeckel’s diagrams, and a very enjoyable one." (British Society for the History of Science Journal)"Through eighteen chapters of beautifully illustrated text, Hopwood lays out the unfolding landscape of scientific, social, and political factors that led Haeckel to create his images for public consumption, as well as the rounds of debates that have dogged these images since their first appearance in print. . . . Hopwood does a good job of giving his reader a glimpse into the manufacture of Haeckel’s images, and in so doing, gives a fresh perspective on the controversy surrounding Haeckel’s famous embryos." (Studies in History and Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences)"This book masterfully reconstructs the controversies surrounding Ernst Haeckel’s infamous diagrams comparing the embryos of different species. Hopwood’s powerful and compelling narrative reveals how these images became enmeshed in fundamental questions about visual representation, scientific fraud, relations between science and religion, and interactions between scientists and their publics. Haeckel’s Embryos is a transformative study of scientific controversy that should be required reading for every student of science.” (Michael R. Dietrich, coeditor of Outsider Scientists: Routes to Innovation in Biology)"Ernst Haeckel, the best known German Darwinist of his day, was also the most controversial. For nearly a century and a half his widely circulated series of animal and human embryos, illustrating common descent, have prompted charges of forgery and fraud from scientific, religious, and political critics. Antievolutionists, especially advocates of intelligent design, have been among his most outspoken detractors. One can only hope that Hopwood’s scrupulously researched and evenhandedly argued book will finally lay these longstanding controversies to rest." (Ronald L. Numbers, author of Galileo Goes to Jail and Other Myths about Science and Religion)"Hopwood has written a meticulous and engaging history that sets a high bar for future print and visual culture studies. Haeckel’s Embryos shows the material, intellectual, and cultural conditions under which the hidden is rendered visible and the visible rendered standard, amidst contestation at every turn. Open it, and—after you have recovered from its spectacular images—read it, for this is history of science at its best." (Lynn K. Nyhart, Vilas-Bablitch-Kelch Distinguished Achievement Professor, History of Science, University of Wisconsin–Madison)"Certain images in science capture the imagination and take on a life of their own. In this excellent book, surely the definitive account of the afterlife of scientific images, Hopwood examines the most iconic pictures of vertebrate embryos, those first produced by German evolutionist Ernst Haeckel in 1868. These images have been repeatedly caught up in anti-Darwinist debates and to this day have been subject to charges of scientific fraud. In tracking Haeckel’s embryos, Hopwood restores the full sound and fury of history to the act of looking at what humans are and where we came from." (Trevor Pinch, Cornell University)

About the Author Nick Hopwood is reader in history of science and medicine in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge. He is the author of Embryos in Wax, coeditor of Models: The Third Dimension of Science, and cocurator of the online exhibition Making Visible Embryos.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Definitive Work on this Sordid Affair By Darwin Researcher This work promises to be the definitive work in the history of a set of drawings that have survived for over 100 years even though they were problematic from their inception. Hopwood covers not only the embryo problem, but Haeckel’s blatant racism in his books, and especially his racist illustrations connecting Blacks with the higher apes. This coffee table sized book of 388 pages is very well illustrated and carefully documented. The author shows how a set of pictures printed in a book in 1901 have been reprinted thousand of times in hundreds of books and as late as 1997. Must reading for all of those interested in the history of science and evolution. Cambridge Professor Hopwood has done his homework on this sordid affair and highlighted an event in history many wish had never happened.

By Susan Cachel Besides discussing the widespread dispersal and transformation of Haeckel's embryo figures, Hopwood also discusses the position of Haeckel as a "Public Intellectual" and defender of science in the German-speaking world. The discovery and re-discovery of Haeckel's manipulations of the embryo figures is also dealt with. However, it is not made clear why these figures continue to be used in modern textbooks on evolution, although their use as propaganda by creationists is detailed. The book is abundantly illustrated.

This book looks interesting (I have not read it) but I would have more confidence in it if the cover photo showed Haeckel's embryos. Those are not Haeckel's but Romer's. Of course 1) that may be on purpose to point that out in the book and 2) I know that authors do not often have control over cover photos.
