Praised by H.P. Lovecraft as a “magnificent” debut, C.L. Moore’s first story is still one of the most famous and enduring tales in science fiction. Passing through the streets of Lakkdarol, the newest human colony on Mars, Northwest Smith witnesses a bizarre sight: a young woman, clad in scarlet, being chased by a mob chanting “Shambleau! Shambleau!” As beautiful as she is frightened, Northwest shields her from death at the hands of the mob, but alone in his quarters, she reveals how she intends to thank him and what lies inside the closely wrapped turban on her head... One of the strangest, and surely one of the most imaginative stories ever written, SHAMBLEAU was hailed by readers, authors, and editors as the debut of a truly gifted writer during the golden age of science fiction.

Space succubus, full of pulp By Dione Basseri Theory: there are certain mythical creatures with no basis in Earth flora or fauna, which could only be inspired by alien creatures, thereby proving huamnity's long-lost celestial connections.Proof: Medusa.A space outlaw finds a young woman being attacked by villagers yelling "Shambleau," and rescues her. On taking her home, she begins exhibiting strange behavior, until she reveals herself to be Medusa, but with a more succubus-like function.And...meh? This was included in a horror collection, and it's not quite horror, for me. More science fiction, given that we're so focused on space and extraterrestrial monsters. For the age of pulp sci-fi, it's okay. But for modern stories, very bland. Relies more on sexual content than anything else.I listened to the audio production from Librivox. This story is in the public domain.

Moore created one of the best sci-fi stories ever in Shambleau, and she created one of the best vehicles to tell a string of magical stories in the character of Northwest Smith. Her stories were written so that they wrapped you in her emotions and feelings for her characters so that they became unforgettable.
