Sometimes Jesus says things that make you scratch your head. Much of what Jesus has to say is uplifting or inspiring. But let’s face it: Sometimes Jesus says things that are confusing, perplexing, or even offensive. In Head Scratchers, Talbot Davis leads you to understand some of these difficult words. In each chapter, he examines a different statement or brief teaching from Jesus, using the provided biblical and other background to help illuminate the passage in question. Davis not only guides you to understand the passage, but shows you what it means to take it to heart and embrace a new way of life as a result. Starting with a passage we struggle with, Davis opens it to reveal a challenging, hopeful word that will bring the gospel’s transformative power into your life. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter are designed to help leaders of small groups. How about things that Jesus said? This book provides some "clearing of the cultural clutter" in the way we understand a few sayings of Jesus.Inside you'll find five passage that have commonly caused people to scratch their heads upon reading, even studying, the words of Jesus. They are:"The kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing" from Matthew 11:12,"unless you hate your father or mother you cannot be a disciple" from Luke 14:26,"the gates of Hades will not overcome it" from Matthew 16:18,the unforgivable sin from Mark 3:29,and "let the dead bury the dead" from Matthew 8:21-22.These are some curious sayings from Jesus, to say the least. Davis navigates the cultural and contextual waters for us and reveals the truth behind our twenty-first century blinders. After each chapter is a follow-up that could be useful as a primer for a Bible study or class. The writing is very easy to understand, it would make a nice conversation starter as you could reference the book and not be afraid of losing listeners. Davis uses ideas and words from our setting to help form pictures from the ancient past.I enjoyed this book very much. This book was provided for review, at no cost, by Abingdon Press.

Each sermon was inspired by a difficult-to-understand verse in the Bible: Matthew 11:12, Luke 14:26, Matthew 16:18, Mark 3:29, and Matthew 8:21-22.He examined the context of the verse and clues like the meaning of the original words and cultural behaviors of the time. If you've read commentaries on these verses before, you've probably come across the explanations that he gives. Since these are sermons, he filled out each chapter by focusing on a related issue that applies to our spiritual growth.I appreciate that the author emphasized how important it is to look at verses in context. He sometimes strayed a bit from the actual point of the verse in order to focus on an some aspect of our spiritual growth, but his overall points were good ones and lead readers into a closer walk with Christ.I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

By Kris Mares Head Scratchers looks at five odd, hard to understand and sometimes scandalous things that Jesus says. As a preacher, I have a hard time making sense of Jesus' hard sayings sometimes, so it was helpful for me to hear what someone else had to say. For each saying, Talbot reminds us that "Context is Everything." We can't take one statement in isolation, but must back up and see it within the bigger picture. So what does it mean to hate your mother and father? What is the unforgivable sin? Why wasn't the disciple supposed to bury his father? Each chapter was easy to read, gave some great "real life" stories and examples and ended with thought-provoking discussion questions for personal reflection or small group discussion. For me, the last chapter was the most powerful. To read the rest of my review (and one for his newest book Solve) visit: [...]
