About the Author Jack Vance (1916-2013) published his first story, The World Thinker, in 1945 and has since written over sixty books. Best known as a science fiction and fantasy writer, Vance has won several awards in those genres, including the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement and a number of Hugo Awards. He also wrote under the pseudonyms Ellery Queen, Peter Held, John Holbrook, John van See, and Alan Wade.

Several waves of the harsh and opportunistic Chasch, then the Dirdir, and finally, the distant Wankh. Somehow, in the midst of this, humanity was imported and is considered under-men, servants to the alien races. When a help beacon is received on Earth an investigation is sent, only to be shot out if space. The sole survivor is Adam Reith, marooned on an unpredictable planet, on an odyssey to find a way to acquire another ship and return home.In the first two volumes of this series, Reith survives encounters with the Chasch and Wankh, falls in and out of love, and accumulates several good friends. Most important, he has come to realize that the only way back to space is through the Sivishe space yards that serve the Dirdir. In addition, the only way to have a ship is to build it at an incredible price. Insurmountable problems to anyone but Reith, who always seems to greet adversity with a stylish equanimity.To gain the money, Reith must gain the upper hand over the Dirdir, who regard the fields where the gems are found as a sacred hunting ground. Not for jewels, but for the humans who seek them. Predator chases predator across the fields of the Carabas. One seeks wealth, the other seeking dinner. Reith, of course, gets his sequins in an unorthodox manner, and earns the enmity of the Dirdir in the process.Under cover, Reith, Anacho and Traz make their way to Sivishe and commission the spaceship. Of course, the cost is extravagant and they must deal with Aila Woudiver, a merchant. Woudiver has two character flaws - he is infinitely corrupt and venal, and he desperately wants to be a Dirdir. The latter may be impossible, but that detail has escaped the merchant's psychotic thinking. For Reith, complication mounts on complication, and his ability to cope will be severely taxed.While none of this series lacks for action, 'The Dirdir' probably has the most ornate and exciting plot. Reith may not have the flair of the dashing hero of a medieval romance, but he is surprisingly loyal and chivalrous. His flaw in this book is a bit too much optimism, which leads him to become his own worst enemy on several occasions. Considerable time is spent on the Dirdir and their culture, revealing Vance's unique ability to fabricate worlds and peoples out of whole cloth. This series and the Demon Princes represent the best of Vance's early science fiction in what was to be a long and fruitful career.

The third book of Jack Vance's Tschai saga By Pierce Timberlake For an overview of the four-book Tschai series, see my review of the first book, 'The Chasch.''The Dirdir' is the third volume describing Adam Reith's adventures as an Earthman stranded on the planet Tschai. Attempting to either re-outfit his downed space craft or build a new one from local parts, Reith has need of money, so he and his two companions decide to risk the Dirdir hunting preserve. The Dirdir, the most violent and predatory of Tschai's alien species, indulge their compulsion to hunt by allowing humans to search for '"sequins" (the local unit of currency) on their hunting grounds, where apparently money grows naturally. The humans may keep any sequins they find, but the catch is that they will themselves be hunted by the avid Dirdir until they can escape from the preserve. When the Dirdir hunt down and kill the humans, they keep the sequins, allowing them to indulge their predatory natures while at the same time adding to their personal fortunes. Humans greedy or desperate for cash often accept this devil's bargain. Reith, lacking the slave mentality of the other humans on Tschai, has a different idea: he reasons that the best place to obtain sequins would be from the Dirdir themselves, who will have collected them from all the humans they have managed to catch. Reith's plan is that he and his companions will go into the preserve posing as normal prey, but then they will attempt to ambush and rob the Dirdir, thus building up their cache of sequins very quickly.All of this is presented in Vance's usual subtle and elegant prose. Once again, the story is exciting and imaginative. There are no weak links in this series.

Third Book in a Fantastic Series by Vance By Gletkin The Dirdir is an examination of one of the three intelligent life forms that has come to the planet Tschai joining in an ancient conflict. Each of the three invading species has imported Earth humans to serve as underlings to be uplifted in their masters' image. One of Adam Reith's new-found allies is such a modified "Dirdirman", who acquaints him with the intricacies of Dirdir hunting behavior.This edition is an example of the work of the Vance Integral Edition, making it the most authentic representation of Vance's intent before editors and publishing houses 'helped' make his work more mainstream. You should read The Chasch (Tschai) and The Wannek (Tschai) (also available from Vance's e-publishing site jackvance_dot_com) before stepping into the middle of the series with this book. The Tschai books form one of the best intelligent adventure series in science fiction.
