Review "This superb book is written primarily for residential tenants, but landlords should read it, too... On my scale of 1 to 10, this outstanding book rates an off-the-chart 12." There is no "American Tenant Law". Every state has vastly different laws in regards to renting. This book is more of a general advice rather than a guide to your rights. Most specific things will have you going online, which is probably where your search started anyway. If you've never rented before, as a tenant or landlord, this book will be quite helpful. If you're looking for specific laws that apply to you, this book will be a list of URLs that you probably already looked at.

By Carole Slater It's intensely detailed, so you need a lot of patience going through it. Plus, I discovered it pertains primarily to Federal laws, so you still have to go into further research for local laws. Nonetheless, I felt empowered after reading it, before researching local law, to write a powerful, informed letter asking for action from my landlord. They are currently taking some action to rectify my case. I do have 9 years of history living in this complex. I believe that carries power...

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A very good book, but needs some improvements By Sunday This book does a fantastic job describing Android Studio app development and supporting tools (Git, Gradle, ...). The coding projects it gives are really good, illustrating the essentials of app development. But, some of the most important android software classes that they use (e.g. Intents, Adapters, Broadcasts, Notifications, Transactions, etc) are hard to find, since they are not mentioned in either the Table of Contents or the sparse Index. If there is another edition of the book (I hope there is one), it could improve the Index, add also add a chapter discussing some important classes and methods in the SDK. This should be done before Chapter 7 about Git, where many of these classes are used without any description of them (e.g., Intents). This makes Chapter 7 particularly murky, and difficult to understand. Chapter 8 is clearer, with some discussion of android classes and methods. Then, in Chapters 9 and 10, there are a few good descriptions of android classes etal. For example, Intents are finally described near the end of Chapter 9; although, there is no reference to this in the Index. Also, what it means to inflate android Views is finally described near the start of Chapter 10, but again is not referenced in the Index. These descriptions are needed much earlier in the book, before they are actually used in the "Labs".I would have given this book 5 stars, except for this lack of clarity, and lack of content referencing.

Helpful how-to tutorial to learn Android development and needed tools By Jo Very helpful how-to tutorial book to learn developing Android app efficiently using Android Studio. The book presents step-by-step examples of Android programs, Git, Gradle and unit-testing. The book doesn't require profound programming background to understand it. Developers who want to get a quick understanding of android development should read this book as well.

Good introductory book for Android programming By JY This is the ideal book to introduce a beginner to learning Android development with Android Studio. The installation instructions are detailed and cover almost all of the possible situations that could happen on either Windows or Mac, and the book also provides many helpful tips for extracting the most functionality out of Android Studio such as various keyboard shortcuts and explanations of the window panes that report on the condition of the app. The code samples and projects (termed programming labs in this book) are helpful for understanding not only Android programming but Java programming in general, ranging from a simple to-do list app to an app that can convert many pairs of currencies using publicly available API data. Each programming lab walks you through the steps of creating a full-fledged app and also explains exactly why each step is necessary, helping you as a programmer develop a well-grounded foundation for creating your own custom apps in the future. If there is one criticism I have of the book, it is that the book gets a bit too deep into the functionality of Android Studio, but that qualifies it as a good reference if there is ever a part of Android Studio that you don't understand. Other than that, the book is packed with content, even including a section on Android wear! If you ever intend to learn Android development, Android Studio is the way to go as it is Google's own primary editor for Android development, and this book will serve you well in that journey.

“Why are Kazakhstan and Montana the same place?” asks one chapter of Kate Brown’s surprising and unusual journey into the histories of places on the margins, overlooked or erased. It turns out that a ruined mining town in Kazakhstan and Butte, Montana—America’s largest environmental Superfund site—have much more in common than one would think thanks to similarities in climate, hucksterism, and the perseverance of their few hardy inhabitants. Taking readers to these and other unlikely locales, Dispatches from Dystopia delves into the very human and sometimes very fraught ways we come to understand a particular place, its people, and its history. In Dispatches from Dystopia, Brown wanders the Chernobyl Zone of Alienation, first on the Internet and then in person, to figure out which version—the real or the virtual—is the actual forgery. She also takes us to the basement of a hotel in Seattle to examine the personal possessions left in storage by Japanese-Americans on their way to internment camps in 1942. In Uman, Ukraine, we hide with Brown in a tree in order to witness the annual male-only Rosh Hashanah celebration of Hasidic Jews. In the Russian southern Urals, she speaks with the citizens of the small city of Kyshtym, where invisible radioactive pollutants have mysteriously blighted lives. Finally, Brown returns home to Elgin, Illinois, in the midwestern industrial rust belt to investigate the rise of “rustalgia” and the ways her formative experiences have inspired her obsession with modernist wastelands.  Dispatches from Dystopia powerfully and movingly narrates the histories of locales that have been silenced, broken, or contaminated. In telling these previously unknown stories, Brown examines the making and unmaking of place, and the lives of the people who remain in the fragile landscapes that are left behind.

Dispatches from Dystopia: Histories of Places Not Yet Forgotten, by Kate Brown

Review “Melancholic but always fascinating Brown's journeys to some of the world’s furthest and most fragile destinations help us explore the meaning of place and memory and, along the way, subtly re-invent the art of the exploration. Dispatches from Dystopia is a compelling and important book.” (Alastair Bonnett, author of Unruly Places: Lost Spaces, Secret Cities, and Other Inscrutable Geographies)“Brown is among our most visionary historians: a scholar, writer, and traveler who forces us to think of awfulness as a kind of opportunity and emptiness as another kind of thriving. Dispatches from Dystopia should be read by anyone interested in the fate of modernity in places that were once thought to be at its forefront. But it is also a set of essays on the art and science of sense-making: when to go to the archives and when to ignore them, how to hear and smell a place, and why our stories about someone else's past end up being some version of our own.” (Charles King, author of Odessa: Genius and Death in a City of Dreams)“Well written, raw, compelling, and seldom boring.” (Library Journal)“Brown's book masterfully straddles the line between personal travelogue and academic research. Her essays jump from a war-torn region of Central Asia to a forgotten hotel basement in Seattle, and Brown argues that history is much better served by historians who put themselves in the places they research and the essays they write.” (Shelf Awareness)“Brown is a historian, but she is also a traveler.  . . . For Brown, it is not enough simply to research a place, to reproduce published photographs. The importance of the body, of the physical presence of the writer, runs throughout Dispatches from Dystopia. Reacting against a kind of history too narrowly focused on printed records, on archives and official histories, Brown argues that historians must also seek out what cannot be transcribed and collated by scribes. To see, one must go: ‘The premise of this book,’ she writes, ‘is that traveling can be a form of negotiation, an unraveling of certainties and convictions and a reassembling of the past.’” (Los Angeles Review of Books)“Historians spend lots of time in archives and libraries. But documents often reveal little about people who lived on the margins of society or whose stories are intentionally obscured. To uncover these people’s stories, historian and self-described ‘professional disaster tourist’ ‘ Brown ventures into a variety of wastelands. Dispatches from Dystopia compellingly chronicles people who were or are living on the edge.” (Science News)“Dispatches from Dystopia is a remarkable work on fascinating places, and combines the best of historical analysis and travel writing. Despite its melancholic tone, it is a visionary work that deserves a wide audience.” (Times Higher Education)

About the Author Kate Brown is professor of history at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She is also the author of Biography of No Place: From Ethnic Borderland to Soviet Heartland and Plutopia: Nuclear Families, Atomic Cities, and the Great Soviet and American Plutonium Disasters.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. beautifully written and revelatory By Dmitry Portnoy Rigorous and disciplined, this is an essential book with necessary lessons and perspectives not just for historians but anthropologists, doctors, even lawyers, and anyone serious about people and the world. In each essay, Brown places her person at some boundary--not just geographical (though that's always present and apparent), but at the limit of some structured, inadequate, strained understanding, whether it be a political outline of ethnicity, a scientific diagnosis of a disease, a historical depiction of an event--and Janus-like looks both into the accepted wisdom and out into the shadowy mixed realm of potential truths. Always illuminating, always engaging, always just a little too short, always honoring the places and especially the people she writes about, these essays exemplify scholarly intellect and the role academic inquiry plays in the world..

By Rex Stevens This book, published at University of Chicago, (2015), in what to me is a series of three works with largely the same set of concerns that are wonderfully explored by Kate Brown. The other two, preceding, this one are "Plutopia," Oxford, (2013), and "A Biography of No Place," Harvard,(2003). Each of her books addresses her concerns in magically different and engaging ways. Readers will immediately notice that the narratives alternate between standard third person and, the most important one, first person. The writer is involved in the events themselves and not just as an observer or a scribe. Kate Brown's humanity is there on every page making it clear that her concerns are those also of her readers and, obviously, those she in engaged with everyday in her travels and research. The central topic, though is what a wasteland we have made of vast stretches of the world because of our obsessions with nuclear weapons and nuclear power. Her concern is not just Chernobyl, Fukushima, Three-Mile Island, but mainly two plutonium factories and what they have done to the political structures of our lives and, centrally, the devastation to our habitats and ourselves. The silence of radioactive isotopes have made it possible for us to remain unconscious of the effects all of the waste products have had on our health, the huge number of deaths that are not grouped in the obituary columns of local newspapers, but appear in families over many generations, and since these products do not just disappear, we, our children, our neighbors all, for many generations suffer and die from radiation poisoning. Our animals, pets and livestock are poisoned. All growing things are poisoned, and since radiation cannot be seen, its effects are difficult to trace to the damage they cause in our bodies and in all living things. Governments organized to produce nuclear weapons and then nuclear power urging its continuing production saying, often, that it is non-polluting, does not cause climate warming, and is both more effective and less costly than burning coal or making wind farms or other sustainable power alternatives. But? Nothing is free. The costs, though silent and long lived, are easily ignored until they pile up and no one wants the refuse in their back yards. People living by the production facilities deny the dangers because of the thousands of jobs created by the industry. All of this, in marvelously knitted and dramatic narrative gets revealed at just the right places in these three works. I have now been through all three of them and cannot wait until we get to see the revelations from her current sabbatical leave. I have not been soenthusiastic for an historians work since I was, long ago, an undergraduate learning about the Trans-Mississippi West by a teacher who was as involved in the lives and communities of Native Americans and their histories. Kate Brown has entered my pantheon of writers and teachers along with Dr. William E. Unrau. You may find his work here, too.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An accessible account of a difficult matter. By David V Dr. Brown forces us to confront the idea of a modernist wasteland from every angle. What it means for us, where we think it may refer to, and, most importantly, if we've been living in one all along. The juxtaposition of Soviet and post-Soviet settings with American counterparts is moving. More importantly, her prose and style make accessible an otherwise difficult matter. Highly recommended.

Indie Author Survival Guide (Second Edition) (Crafting a Self-Publishing Career Book 1), by Susan Kaye Quinn

About the Author Susan Kaye Quinn is a rocket scientist turned speculative fiction author who now uses her PhD to invent cool stuff in books. Her bestselling novels and short stories have been optioned for Virtual Reality, translated into German, and featured in several anthologies. Susan has been indie publishing since 2011, but she's not an indie rockstar or a breakout success--she's one of thousands of solidly midlist indie authors making a living with their works. Her self-publishing books are based on her personal experience in self-publishing genre fiction--she hopes they will help her writer-friends take their own leaps into the wild (and wonderful) world of indie publishing...and not only survive, but thrive.

Collins Susan's book really opened my eyes to all the opportunities that this career I've chosen has available. Her advice comes from not only her extensive experience in indie publishing but also a love for her fellow writers. I will be referring time and time again to the Indie Author Survival Guide as I climb the ladder of publishing. Thank you Susan for sharing your knowledge.

By Daniel Arthur Smith I've been fortunate to reach so many readers and with every launch, my inbox fills with questions from my author friends."How do you do it?" They ask.I always reply that there are three things1. Write the best story you can2. The Readers are the ones who spread the word not me. Support your readers and they will support you.3. Pick up a copy of author friend Susan Kaye Quinn's Indie Author Survival GuideSusan has been kind enough to collate her experiences in one place, with tips on writing, marketing, and how to maintain a positive attitude. This book is stellar in explanation and a must have for both hobbyists and professional indie authors.Fresh for the evolving indie market, Susan has recently updated the guide to a Second Edition that is 25% longer than the First (which was already 300 pages).I could not stress how important this book is for your success.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Pep Talk, Not a Reference Book By I.M. Shai This reads like what it is--a collection of blog posts. There's a lot of common sense in here, and a lot this-worked-for-me, can't-promise-it-will-work-for-you type of stuff, but I wouldn't call it nuts-and-bolts practical. And I wouldn't even call it a "guide," rather a really long pep talk loaded with lots of "Hey did you read any of my fiction books yet?" advertising. And nearly every section includes parenthetical references to other sections or other books, as if this were an actual reference book. This made me feel like I was being pitched ideas, or maybe like the author was insisting that her information was helpful because, gosh, there's even *more* info in this other spot! I don't know anybody who would flip through an ebook to read a few more paragraphs on a subject when that info should have already been in the section the reader is already reading. Some folks may find this to be incredibly helpful/motivational, but I dreaded reading it after about 15%. At around 50% I resorted to skimming, hoping to find information that would actually be helpful and that wasn't readily available on every other indie author blog/website/FAQ.If you're looking for a success story to motivate you to write, read this. If you need someone to tell you that spamming Twitter and Facebook won't get you book sales, read this. If you love this author, read this. But, if you're writing a book, or wrote a book, and you're looking for actual "how to" information (things like copyright and fair use rules, do's and don'ts, contract help, etc.), skip this one.

Regardless of time period, some things hold true: kindness is timeless.Invasion of privacy; divorce; relationship issues; encounters between people from different places and cultures; new technologies developed at dizzying speeds . . . the hectic pace of life in the late nineteenth century could make the mind reel.Wait a minute—the nineteenth century? Many of the issues people faced in the 1880s and ’90s surprisingly remain problems in today’s modern world, so why not take a peek at some Victorian advice about negotiating life’s dizzying twists and turns? Gathered from period magazines and Hill’s Manual of Social and Business Forms, a book on social conduct originally published in 1891, this volume provides timeless guidance for a myriad of situations, including:The husband’s duty: Give your wife every advantage that it is possible to bestow.Suggestions about shopping: Purchasers should, as far as possible, patronize the merchants of their own town. (Buy local!)Suggestions for travel: Having paid for one ticket, you are entitled to only one seat. It shows selfishness to deposit a large amount of baggage in the surrounding seats and occupy three or four.Unclassified laws of etiquette: Never leave home with unkind words. This advice is accompanied by watercolors and illustrations throughout. Though these are tips originate from nineteenth-century ideas, you’ll find that they certainly do still apply.

J. travis My grandmother was born a the turn of the last century, and I was blessed to grow up in the company of a woman who made the transition from gaslights to fluorescent bulbs, from corsetry to the Wonder Bra...and I cannot tell whether I am more impressed my Sarah's meticulous and devoted research, her delicate wit, or her good-hearted sense. Having myself grown up on Amy Vanderbilt's work on manners and comportment, I think that Sarah has collected the best Victorian sensibilities and behaviors into one quite readable volume that 'ought' to be standard reading in middle school, as it serves both to tame the savage child, and provide history class with some depth and color it would otherwise be lacking.

A Good Starting Point for Adding to Your Trip Choices By Donald Mitchell If you take one trip a year and never go to the same place twice, even the most fortunate person will probably visit no more than 50 different places in a lifetime. What a great idea it is to be more aware of what your choices are before taking one of those 50 trips. The book is organized around nine themes as described thusly on the contents page:1. Across Water (Unforgettable voyages, from luxury cruises to dugout canoes)2. By Road (Chasing the horizon: legendary drives and secret detours)3. By Rail (Watching the world pass by your window)4. On Foot (The pleasures of the oldest and greenest mode of travel)5. In Search of Culture (Life-enhancing odysseys for lovers of all the arts)6. In Gourmet Heaven (Seeking out the world of flavors)7. Into the Action (Hands-on adventures for those who'd rather do it for themselves)8. Up and Away (Flights, skyways, and bird's-eye views)9. In Their Footsteps (Pilgrimages for readers, dreamers, and history fans)Typical trip choices are usually described in one or two pages with color photographs and maps taking up at least half of the space. An entry contains brief advice on when to go, how long the trips last, how far ahead to plan, special packing advice, and Web sites for more information. Highlights of such a trip are also briefly described so you can get a sense of what you'll see and do. Some trips are, however, listed in as little as a paragraph.Naturally, you have to judge a book like this very carefully. By definition, you haven't taken most of the trips!I looked at trips I've taken that were terrific and noticed some weaknesses in the advice. Here are a few examples:1. Each entry is treated as though there's nothing else nearby that might be of interest. As a result, you need to check the geographies to see how you might combine several trips listed in the book into one. For example, many of the New England trips are located not too far from one another and you should consider doing more than one on a visit.2. The timing of how to enjoy other events isn't always considered in enough detail. For instance, Boston's Freedom Trail is listed in the book. But you aren't told that if you come around Patriot's Day (a Monday in April) you can also see re-enactments of the battles of Lexington and Concord and the running of the Boston Marathon on the same trip.3. Some of the advice seemed just plain wrong from my point of view. When I went to the Galapagos, I was there for 10 days in the dry season and 4 days in the wet season. The wet season was awful! People there said to be sure to always come in the dry season (which ends around the beginning of winter in North America). The book made no mention of this issue in discussing when to go. Also, many of the most interesting things to do in the Galapagos aren't mentioned. As a result, use this book to start dreaming a little about what you might go see. I was fascinated by some of the choices for Australia and New Zealand that I had never heard of but which looked very beautiful. But do plenty of homework beyond the book to find out what you really need to know before choosing and organizing a trip.Bon voyage!

Browsing through this beautiful book, I had to add several travel destinations to my list of places I someday want to visit. If you want some great vacation ideas, from US to exotic oversees destinations, this book will provide many. Paging through the book is also an educational opportunity to discover a bit more about places around the world. The book is not organized by location (although there is an index for finding specific destinations), but rather the itineraries are listed under the following categories:Across WaterBy RoadBy RailOn FootIn Search Of CultureIn Gourmet HeavenInto the ActionUp and AwayIn Their FootstepsEach destination or journey entry includes a page of photos and information. A small map showing the location and route (if applicable) is included as well as a list of highlights. There is also a paragraph or two about the trip and each destination includes sections labeled: When to Go, How Long, Planning, Insider Information, and Websites. These provide some good information and tips for travelers and the website listings give the readers a way to find more details if they want to plan a trip. The book contains a wealth of ideas and there is certainly something for everyone. Just a sampling of the trips in the book:Sampling Food along the MediterraneanFollowing Che's trip in Argentina (as depicted in the movie "The Motorcycle Diaries")Cycling Across TransylvaniaRiding the Moroccan Camel TrainDriving from Utah's Bryce Canyon to Capital ReefIndia's Golden Triangle (Dehli, Jaipur, Agra)This is a beautiful book that is very well done. National Geographic does not disappoint here!

78 of 83 people found the following review helpful. Amazing value By I should be at the gym This is a great "coffee table" style book, filled with interesting information and the sort of excellent photography one would expect from National Geographic. What's most remarkable, however, is simply the price. This is a big, heavy, tome of a book--hardcover--and I would have expected it to easily cost twice what it does. It's a real pleasure to browse through, and I learned of quite a few places I had not heard of or would not have thought about as options for travel destinations. It is not a resource per se. Think of it as a collection, a wide array, of mini-travelogues with good photography (even if on a fairly matte paper stock), and given the large size of the book, this allows for fairly large-format images. A good value.

I popped in the DVD and quite surprisingly made a beautiful butterfly on the first try! I was able to stop the DVD and replay where needed to ensure that I followed the steps correctly. It was quick and lovely and satisfying, and I can't wait to make my next one! I plan to glue one to a graduation card, or maybe several since they are so simple to make.Thank you Mr. LaFosse, for simplifying this so that even a first time origamist can be successful. I plan on making all of the different styles.

The directions are fairly straightforward, but I was bored after the first three butterfly models. I set it aside for now and will probably return to It again in the future. Overall, it is a good design book for butterfly folds.

I love that this book covers all of these topics in Objective-C as Swift still isn't quite ready for primetime. I've been an iOS developer for many years, and have found this book to still be a must-have desk companion to the Apple documentation. The way the authors explain the topics in this book is very in-depth, instructional, and easy to follow. If you have a question about iOS development, then you need this book. It literally covers everything you need to know.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Worth the time and money By Jeff Overall a great book and I'd definitely recommend it anyone looking to improve their iOS skills. That being said, I think this book is more for people who are comfortable with building apps and writing Objective-C code rather than beginners. The chapters come with sample projects, but they are mostly complete so it's not like other books that guide you through step by step building an app. Instead, the book takes the approach of walking you through the code that is already written. Each chapter stands on its own so you can cherry pick the high priority chapters and then come back to the others whenever you want.If you are looking for a book that guides you through writing a bunch of different sample apps, then this is not the book for you. However, if you are looking to expand your skill set and learn some new frameworks, I'd absolutely recommend picking it up!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By Michael V. Great explanations, and everything is done in Objective-C! This is amazing!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good choice for parents. You need further reading By MRL The first chapter of the book follows a tradition of other Pack books about Raspberry Pi and describes the system and how to set it up.In the second chapter, the author introduces the main programming language featured in the book: Scratch. This chapter represents a good introduction to the language and to program a simple animation, while the next one goes deeper on the language, using another game as an example. The fourth chapter deals with Python. I must admit that, in my opinion, this chapter aims to cover too many subjects at once. It might prove to be difficult for the reader to absorbe all the information provided. But if the reader manages to keep up with everything, there are a lot of useful examples and all the main features of Python are discussed. In the fifth chapter, the user is guided through creating a game that is programmed in Python, and the author shows how to create a simple game controller, building it from scratch. After this, there’s a chapter that focuses on using Google Maps inside a Python program and teaches how to personalize a program adding buttons and other widgets to it.The last chapter focuses on how to play notes and songs using Sonic Pi. Readers will understand how to do it via simple commands, writing a program that acts as a complete composer. The entire book is full of really interesting examples, but I am under the impression that it shows the readers the pros and cons of different technologies without going deeper in any of them. A little more that 120 pages can’t be enough to discuss all the fascinating topics mentioned in the book. The book doesn’t seem to be suitable for kids, but it would be a good choice for parents who want to learn to program captivating games, maybe to share them with their children. In this way, it can be wonderful choice, but if you want to continue to program games, you are bound to need further reading, at least about Scratch and Python.

I was wondering if I could let my 11yr old tinker with dad's favorite inexpensive SBC. Thanks to +Packt Publishing and +Fahad Siddiqui for some great books to help bootstrap the kid. Here's my review of the books.Raspberry Pi Projects for Kids - Second Edition"Leverage the power of programming to use the Raspberry Pi to create awesome games"Author: Daniel BatesAs the name suggests, its a book for kids. You don't need any prior experience to use the book. Hence its perfect for a kids new to Raspberry Pi. You do need a Raspberry Pi to enjoy all the hardware projects, but I realized after reading the book that it does a decent job introducing kids to Scratch and Python. In fact you don't need the Raspberry Pi for the first 4 chapters. You can learn Scratch and Python programming without it.Here's a rough breakdown of the chapters:* C1 : Includes basic setup of Raspberry Pi, installation of software on Raspberry Pi* C2 : Introduces Scratch programming* C3 : You make your own Angry Birds game in Scratch* C4 : Introduces you to Python* C5 : Make your own game controller and program it using Python* C6 : GUI application, Google maps* C7 : Sonic Pi application to teach musicI let my kid read the book. Since he was already familiar with Scratch, it was easy for him to zip thru till Chapter3. He kind of got lost in the middle of Chapter4. The paradigm shift into a non visual programming language was like a jolt for him. There was nothing to drag and drop. Too many concept to grasp in one sitting.I asked him to skip the chapter to the next. Chapter 5 started of interestingly with building of a game controller with some handy office supplies. My son was exited to create his own version using play-dough and some conducting tape. But he didn't have the patience to work on the code. I jumped in and filled in to get the project working. We skipped Chapter6 as well and moved on to another favorite part of the book, to create music with code. My son goes to Piano classes and recently figured out how to play STAR WARS theme song. He was so exited to code that into Sonic Pi and hear his favorite music play.Over all it was a fun experience. It even included code samples on Packt Publishing website. On the positive side, its exactly what I needed a quick jumpstart for my kid. On the downside, I wish it had a little more hands-on with Raspberry Pi hardware, rather than focus on software alone. The later chapters were also hard for my son to follow along. But thats a good thing..it will be something he can revisit in an year and find it fun to work on.I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get your kids jumpstarted on programming or getting introduced to hardware. For $35 Raspberry Pi is an affordable way to let your kid introduced to computers...let them tinker and make mistakes.. thats how they learn and thats how I learned growing up.Link to the books:http://www.amazon.com/dp/1785281526 [$11.99 kindle/$24.99 print]https://www.packtpub.com/hardware-and-creative/raspberry-pi-projects-kids-second-edition [$19.99 ebook/$24.99 print]

This book is great for an introduction to the Raspberry Pi By Jaume Aragay Badia The book begins with the installation process of the operating system on the memory card and also a list of the most common difficulties and their solution. On all the chapters the text offers the basic information needed but also links external references for extra information on the topics covered. After the Raspberry Pi is working properly, we meet Scratch, a graphic language that allows you to make your first programs assembling graphic blocks like with LEGO. This way you don't have to care about writing code properly. There is no code to write, you just assemble the orders to form a program. With Scratch you begin with simple animations and after that you make your own Angry Birds Game.On the next chapter you use Python. Python is a language with an easy syntax that has much more possibilities that Scratch. You will use structures like IF-ELSE to make branches in your programs to reach new heights in your programming skills. Then you use a physical controller to interact with the Raspberry Pi board to broaden even more the possibilities. After that you interact with external resources like Google Maps to make an interactive map of your city. The last chapter moves in a different direction to use Sound in the Raspberry Pi to see new opportunities. As I said before, this book is great for introduction to the possibilities of the Raspberry Pi board and also offers branches to new sources of information to broaden the knowledge on the topic. Very clearly written and explained.
