Unknown to most humans, aliens love our coffee. It’s the most popular drink in the galaxy and Earth is the only planet that has it. But when he starts acting suspiciously, his worried wife hires PI Jack Winters to find out what’s going on. It looks like just another cheating-spouse case as far as Jack is concerned. He’s seen it all before. He certainly doesn’t believe in aliens and the last thing he expects is to meet one. Jack goes looking for the wayward hubby and finds way more than he ever bargained for, and is soon travelling the galaxy with alien coffee smugglers and fighting for his life against some very nasty inter-galactic bounty hunters. Jack’s in for the adventure of a life-time, but all he really wants is to get back to Earth in time to take his son to the football game. Aliens, Spaceships and the Occasional Latte is a fun romp through space with hardboiled detective Jack Winters and coffee-loving alien smugglers. You don't have to be a java junky to love this book (although it would help), you just have to love an exhilarating blend of sci-fi thriller and hardboiled detective.

Yep, a private eye gets mixed up in coffee smuggling and on the targeted side of a vendetta. But he manages to save the day and those who love him. The story faintly reminded me of the Hitchhiker’s Guide To the Galaxy, though was less comedy and more action. The action does get slow at times, and I'd flnd myself wondering what the story was supposed to be about. However, each time that simply meant a wild plot twist was coming! The ending wraps things up sufficiently while leaving a hole big enough to drive a few sequels through.

I loved the characters, the story line.... everything about it. Some suspense, but more "fun" than anything. It mixes in genres I enjoy - detective stories, sci-fi stories and quite a bit of light-hearted humor.No sex, swearing or real violence, other than a bit of gore when the alien's heads exploded! There's a real strong emphasis of "do the right thing" and the importance of keeping your word - we don't see nearly enough of that these days.Being in the Seattle area, I can understand the alien's love for coffee I'm really looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

If you like detective stories and/or science fiction with a touch of wry humor, you would probably like this book. The main character and some of his companions are well developed. If you're looking for it, you can also find some thoughtful reflection on what it means to be "human" in an imperfect universe.
