By Cheryl Torricer 'Snow Towns' gets you thinking - what happened to the weather patterns on earth that everything is so drastically changed? What are feeders? Why are bodies collected daily? What is done with those collected bodies? It's a good read and I was disappointed that it ended so quickly! I'm looking forward to more!

A MUST FOR AN ARRANGER'S LIBRARY By Felix Mayerhofer Where was this masterful book "Arranging Music For the Real World" when I needed it" As a young "road" musician, early in the stages of arranging, I used to ask reputable arrangers how they had become so knowledgeable and learned to write so well. Unequivocally they all gave the same answer, "I studied and analyzed scores of the 'Masters.'" The author of this excellent book, Vince Corozine, uses this unique concept (the basic principles of arranging and orchestration), as the basis of his book, showing how composers of the past used them and how they effectively may be used today to achieve a fresh contemporary sound. Mr. Corozine has fulfilled his goal admirably, with the inclusion of music of all genres: jazz, symphonic, pop, choral, Broadway, film, and television scores. Not only does he display samples of his own compositions and the "Masters," he demonstrates his works beautifully on a CD which comes with the book. If you feel your arrangements and compositions lack the excitement, tonal color and sophistication that you so desire, then this book is your answer. As a professional musician and music educator, I highly recommend "Arranging Music for the Real World."

A few years ago, I commuted from my home in Hampton, Virginia, down to North Carolina to take some composition lessons with Vince Corozine. Vince showed me some preliminary chapters from a book he was working on and asked me to read and make some comments on what he had done. His goal was to discuss contemporary arranging techniques and compare those techniques with the compositional style of the great composers of the western European tradition. I have just finished reading the complete book for the first time and I think that Vince fulfilled his goal admirably. In addition to being a master composer/arranger and an inspiring teacher, Vince is also a warm and generous person. These traits are in full bloom in this book. Along with providing a wealth of information about arranging and composition, the tone of the book reflects Vince's joy of music making and his willingness to share his encyclopedic knowledge of the subject. I especially liked Chapter 6, A Brief Historical Survey of Orchestration, where Vince compares orchestration styles from the Baroque to the Impressionistic periods. Vince has included numerous examples from his own arrangements and original compositions, which reinforces the fact that this is no mere academic exercise. There are abundant musical examples in the text and an accompanying CD, which includes selections, most or all, arranged or composed by Vince. This book is sure to be a welcome addition to the literature , as both a manual of instruction and as a reference work in itself- a great contribution from one of America's outstanding composer/arrangers.

Great Book By A Customer Corozine's text has been sorely needed by studying arrangers for quite some time; classical focused books have addressed instrument ranges and effects applicable to those specific instruments through orchestral literature, and commercial ones give little information on practical uses of specific techniques. Corozine's text not only covers these two areas, but also is careful to contrast different treatments of arranging the same music. The accompanying compact disc is very helpful in illustrating Corozine's points. In all, a book I wish I had while studying for my own master's degree in arranging in the mid 1990s. Well done!

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Nothing actually worth paying for in this book By HIpSavvy This is a quickly written very short book that is more like a blog post than a book. It speakes to IoT at a VERY high level and does not go into much depth (35 pages worth, about 20 of which have any actual content). The author has 47 other titles to her name (according to a page in the book) and clearly seems to write very short pieces on hot topics to make a quick buck. In context of having paid for and read the book, the reviews seem clearly fake.

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. new job opportunities created by IoT By alicesfcity This book gave me the map I was looking for so I could look ahead and navigate the IoT market to find the new jobs and IoT initiatives before they are announced - there are so many great points and combined research that it led me to look in places I would never have thought of without a guide!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Okay book By RobH This is an okay book to understand basic IoT. It doesn't help much beyond a point and you need to eventually look out for another book for more information.

Excellent, if it hadn't dropped chapters (and made some 'errors') By DNAunion The book is excellent except for a few things.1) There are chapters that were in the 2012 book but were dropped in this 2014 book. For example, "There are no significant changes to Service Broker in SQL Server 2014 from what was available in SQL Server 2012 and this topic was deemed beyond the scope of this book. For more information on Service Broker, you can refer to the SQL Server 2014 Books Online reference of the SQL Server 2012 Unleashed book, which does include a chapter on Service Broker." (p18)The 2012 chapter on Full-Text Search and Semantic Search has also been dropped from the 2014 book.2) 'Errors'After reading the first couple chapters, I skipped to the chapter on Linked Servers, and found 'errors'.a) There is a table on page 504 that has no caption/description and does not pertain to the paragraph it follows.b) On page 511 there is a table with no caption/description and it doesn't pertain to the anything on that page or the page before. (It appears to be, without any mention, supposed to be for something discussed on page 513).c) Twice on page 505 we are told, "The following are the OLE DB providers delivered with SQL Server and the corresponding values for the provider_name argument:", but there is no list. Maybe this references back to the un-described table on page 504, but that may not be the case.

Max Haven't gotten deep into the book yet, but I did find that the printed version is missing pages 941-1036. I will be contacting the publisher, and yes I am aware of the chapters that are only available in the digital version. These missing pages include chapters 28 through 31. There are 47 chapters in the printed book, and these missing pages are basically in the middle. I would attach a picture, but I don't want to break copyright laws.

Spun Bucket is a science fiction, action adventure, murder mystery, romantic comedy novel written in a style reminiscent of anime. Indi 1 is a cylindrical, city-sized space station, rotated to simulate gravity, a spun bucket. Nyx and Greg, two high school seniors, call Indi 1 home, along with their two million neighbors. Nyx has lived her life around school sports, taking it all a game at a time. But now as she enters her last year of high school she gives her dreams for a career as a detective a trial run. She and Greg investigate a rare murder on Indi 1, a murder the police seem to be ignoring. Along the way Nyx and Greg find it is a bit dangerous to be tracking killers. As a woman of color, Nyx is a bit of a rarity among action heroes in literature. Greg has an inquiring mind, always trying to understand how the universe works around him. Nyx enjoys doing things more than studying about them but her lab skills may be the answer to solving this mystery. After all, Nyx and Greg do not have the resources of a police lab to fall back on. They are in this on their own. Or maybe with a little help from their friends. Nyx and Greg live in world built from and filled with high tech. In order to solve this mystery and in order to even survive, they must understand and deploy a variety of technologies. But mastering the technical side is not enough. They need to figure out the very human motivations of the suspects in the case. Nyx and Greg find a great deal about themselves along the way as they get to the bottom of who is killing people on the space city they call home and what it all means. The stakes keep increasing until Nyx and Greg maybe the only two people keeping Indi 1 safe. Indi 1 is in orbit around the star Epsilon Indi A, twelve light years from Earth. In its isolation the inhabitants of Indi 1 have come to do things their own way. Could their very way of life now be at risk? Can Nyx and Greg stop a war? Can Nyx cut it as a detective? What is the nature of the relationship between Nyx and Greg? Can two high school seniors do what all the adults around them seem not to be able to do?

Pavlik I hope that he writes more because Spun Bucket is excellent. There are lots of explanations of technology that two teenagers from hundreds of years in the future are immersed in every step of the way. A lot of technology is explained and if you like science you will probably understand some new things after reading this book. Some of what is new today is still in use but with surprising twists. Some things that we are just hearing about in the news are automatically doing things and are out of control and dangerous. The people in the future civilization who live in the Spun Bucket live in ways that would be controversial (to a lot of people) in today’s world. But nobody is bothered by it in the future.I wish they would assign this book in high school math or science classes because it makes a lot of things in science easy to understand and fun and teachers can make it seem boring (when it is actually far from boring).I would definitely recommend this book.

The Sting meets The UFC and whether the promoter, the con man, or the fighter should run the league. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is often described as human chess, emphasizing not the blows landed as much as the movements leading to make one's opponent "tap out"-a final act of submission. Daniel Mills employed the same philosophies in running successful long cons. Mills, a former fixer and now down-on-his-luck nobody has to return to a life which caused his fall to protect the family that abandoned him. His ex-wife's nephew is a rising MMA star whose promoter may not have his best interests at heart.

It's hard for me to get through books as I get easily distracted and have a hard time reading for extended periods of time. I could not put this book down. I loved the subject material, especially the dual nature of the plot dealing with the con business and MMA intertwined. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. It was a fabulous read and hats off to Kevin for coming up with such an awesome first publishing. The characters were great and each developed wonderfully as the story went on. Can't wait for the next one!

It creates an interesting new genre by marrying a heist/caper storyline with a behind the scenes look at the world of Mixed Martial Arts. Great characters, particularly protagonist Daniel Mills, and snappy dialogue propel this story through twists and turns toward a fantastic ending. Though a less than perfect human being, you'll root for Mills to come out on top in his quest to promote the MMA career of his ex's nephew to a championship. In doing so he is up against a cadre of corrupt promoters, politicians and dangerous criminals. A must read for fans of MMA, crime and thriller novels. You will not regret picking up this book !

Fans of Harlan Coben, John Connolly, or John Sanford will find themselves at home with Kevin Smith’s debut novel, Human Chess. The story weaves the glitzy and often shady world of the Vegas casino, with the brutal and competitive world of mixed martial arts. All with a cast of characters that would fit well in a Tarentino movie. The behind the scenes view of MMA promotion makes one think that Smith really knows the subject material and the story grows in surprising ways. The story builds slowly, but thirty pages in I couldn’t put it down. I found myself completing a chapter and then going back to find the “tells.” I was surprised to find that this was Smith’s first novel. Hopefully we’ll see another one soon.

Attain confidence by knowing your story is clear and solid. Seal out negative influences such as “industry experts” and fleeting trends. This is a way to write a script with integrity that makes a screenplay “storyworthy.” This is how to write a screenplay that works.

By Matthew Terry A couple years ago I was asked to read the top eight screenplays in a local screenplay competition. One of the screenplays not only had the most bland characters but nothing of any sort of consequence happened to them. The biggest conflict in the first 90 pages of the script was the fact that one of them was a vegetarian and was given a plate of bacon with their breakfast. This script was a reminder that you needed good, honest, compelling characters in your script - and you needed to put them through hell. Joe Gilford’s great book: “Why does the Screenwriter Cross the Road? (+ Other Screenwriting Secrets)” hits this rule with a hammer or, should I say, sledgehammer. There are many books on screenwriting that deal with subjects such as story development, the act structure, dialogue - but Mr. Gilford’s book is the first one that I’ve read that truly concentrates on character and character development.Where some books may just give lip service to your characters while focusing more on the visuals or beats or acts - Mr. Gilford spends the first 146 (or so) pages of a 200+ page book emphasizing character. Where they come from, how to write them, what to put them through, what elements you need to really make your character come to life and go beyond the page to the screen. Characters that actors would love to play.Post page 146 (or so), Mr. Gilford talks on other subjects such as dialogue, voice-overs and other “gadgets” that you, as a writer, may need - but it all stems from the creation of good, lasting, exciting characters.Where some writers (and students that I have) are enthralled with the nuances of their story, or the twist, the characters are bland and uninspiring. Why would I want to spend two hours with them? Why would a studio want to invest $50 million on them? Why would an actor want to fight for the role?Again, Mr. Gilford answers those questions and gives you ideas on how to deal with characters that don’t move the story along or, God forbid, boring. If you’re looking for a screenwriting book about character development, you don’t need to go any further than this book.Bottom line is that Joe Gilford takes you on a journey across the road, showing you all the screenwiting sights in the process. It’s definitely a journey worth taking.

It is a wonderfully witty and engaging dialogue with the author as he takes you through all the aspects of the writing process. Excellent book for anyone interested in the screenwriting craft.

He will convince you of the primacy of character, and introduce you to an unforgettable Czech word that will hover in your mind as you create your next protagonist's Act II ordeal. He doesn't promise that writing a screenplay using his advice will be easy; instead he stresses how challenging and time-consuming it will be. But whether you are an aspiring first-timer, an experienced writer, or are stuck in the middle of an unfinished script, you can't help but feel Joe Gilford's motivating encouragement throughout this wonderful book.“Why Does the Screenwriter Cross the Road?” is a great read, it makes sense, and it's not the least bit boring – just like your next screenplay.

Gone to the dogs :) By Robert C Ross "The New York Times" has created the TBook Collections, a series of curated selections of articles from its archives, "assembled into compelling narratives about a particular topic or event. Leveraging the vast scope of the Times’ best reporting over the years, Collections are long form treatments of subjects that include major events in contemporary history as well as entertainment, culture, sports and food."This is a sure fire winner. Sure, cats make better videos, and they have their place in media too.But dog stories, who can resist them? Especially in person -- is "in dog" good English?"Those big brown eyes gaze at you, deeply. Your heart leaps. You caress, murmuring sweet nothings. And as those big browns remain fixed on you, the tail wags.Devoted dog. Besotted owner. That continuous loop of loving reinforcement may begin with the dog’s gaze, according to a new report in Science.Japanese researchers found that dogs who trained a long gaze on their owners had elevated levels of oxytocin, a hormone produced in the brain that is associated with nurturing and attachment, similar to the feel-good feedback that bolsters bonding between parent and child. After receiving those long gazes, the owners’ levels of oxytocin increased, too.The dog’s gaze cues connection and response in the owner, who will reward the dog by gazing, talking and touching, all of which helps solder the two, the researchers said. They suggest that dogs became domesticated in part by adapting to a primary human means of contact: eye-to-eye communication. And when researchers gave dogs extra oxytocin through a nasal spray, the female dogs (though not the males) gazed at their owners even longer, which in turn boosted the owners’ oxytocin levels.“What’s unique about this study is that it demonstrates that oxytocin can boost social gaze interaction between two very different species,” said Steve Chang, an assistant professor of psychology and neurobiology at Yale who was not involved in this latest research. There is more, much much more in this fascinating collection from the "Times".Robert C. Horses and Other Voices, by Letitia Sanders

About the Author Letitia Sanders was born and grew up in a small town in Georgia where her pets were among her best friends. She followed her intellectual side to study English and creative writing and became Phi Beta Kappa at Sweet Briar College and Emory University. After the death of her fiancé in Vietnam in 1967, she moved to San Francisco where she began a 23-year career working with computers for IBM. She progressed from programmer on the huge TOPS project, the largest real-time computer system in the world at the time, to becoming an instructor for IBM, traveling around the US, introducing new computers like the PC to IBM personnel and IBM customers. She married Donn Downing, a retired TIME Magazine reporter who had reported from Vietnam and the White House. On weekends she rode Arabian horses in the coastal hills with a friend from whom she bought an Arabian colt named Shaman. Upon retirement from IBM, Letitia completely deserted the computer world to work part-time at the ranch where Shaman was stabled. Her life became centered around horses, and she became a founding member of the California Nevada Arabian Sport Horse Association. Shaman's ability led her to join the US Dressage Foundation. More recently, Letitia decided to exercise the writing talents she had studied in college. In a sense, she found herself back where she started, surrounded by animals and their stories.

Carter Sr. Compelling in triple areas, the author describes her rich transition into retirement; relates a glorious story of her relationship with her horse, and delivers an enlightening personal view of the relationship between humans and equine. Each area is worthy described and on-target from my view from a horse-type family. Disclosure: both my son and granddaughter are highly accomplished equine vets . My top pal during boyhood was a quarterhorse named Speed shared by three brothers as a gift from our Dad who had been a range-riding cowboy in Kansas and Colorado. When Sanders quoted " there was something about the outside of a horse that was good for the inside of man", I related the truth to what I often have witnessed as young Dr. Carter and younger Dr, Arnold practice their critical roles with horses. From generations of horse folks, their practices involve treating lameness at reining events; breeding great horses or performing vital surgeries at Oklahoma Equine Hospital, or meeting needs of fine horses at ranches across the West.I often recall Will Rogers' quote: "I have always felt that the best doctor in the world is the veterinarian. He can't ask his patients what is the matter--he's got to just know." Sanders' book simply offers fresh understanding in other areas where people and horses enrich each other.

By Gail Black I'm a City Girl who married into a family of horsemen and women, and this book brought into crystal-clear focus just how deep the relationship between people and horse can be. My daughter inherited her passion from her dad's side of the family and I'm very proud of her keen interest and love of horses.I loved all the chapters in this little jewel of a book, and even became nervous while reading the Lipizzaner Ladies chapter. I've heard stories of scary situations that happened to family members while hauling a full trailer up steep and narrow grades. Even though I knew the 'ladies' made it all in one piece, Letitia's gifted writing skills keep me on high alert.I really enjoyed the Wanda chapter, (two legged and feathered). Although I've had multiple turkeys on my roof, and even one that got trapped in my chicken yard, I've never taken the time to actually observe their behavior. She compared the three beautiful males to Fancy Bull Fighter type, strutting and showing off their 'Red Capes'.She and Jane Goodall seem to have a lot in common. Both have amazing observational skills and also the ability to put into perfect words what they see and experience. I was not only delighted to read this book, but educated as well.

I like to find a book that is relaxing and fun to read but with a little bit of substance. This was one. What truly made this book so good was the author's natural connection and love for animals that came across in each story. Whatever she was doing, showing or training or managing the ranch, the connection with and care for the various animals came through as her real motivation. If you love animals, this is an awesome read.

However, agents from The Other Side (mere character actors) are seeking the same photo. And can Derrick and Tamara trust their new young co-star, Dondi Bastone?

Something's rotten in the state of Denmark. Or, rather, in the Thieves Guild on the levitating island of Strand. Specifically, that "something" is a group of mysterious raiders who seem to be able to appear and vanish at will, who slaughter their victims and leave the innocent Thieves Guild (well, innocent of this, anyway...) to face the wrath of an incensed cityguard, who aim to remedy the situation in much the same way that a guillotine remedies a headache. This spells trouble for the Guild's most notorious thief, Tythalon Delreth, who now finds his criminal enterprises interrupted by vengeful guardsmen on one hand and brutal killers on the other. Faced with the choice of either surrendering his evil ways or solving the mystery of these murderous raiders, Tythalon girds himself for adventure—largely with other people's belongings—and goes to work. Can he unmask the real villains before the blade drops on both the Thieves Guild and his own too-mortal neck?

By Lee W Bailey I was totally surprised at the depth of this tale, the character descriptions and personalities are as in depth as the plot without wasting the time of reader but you'll know everything there is know about everyone in the Strand. The plot itself is as twisting and spellbinding as the characters. I'm eagerly hoping and awaiting a sequel. If so, the author has a big challenge to produce a story line that approaches the cleverness and mystery of "A Resurrection of Thieves". Best read.

A Resurrection of Thieves will not disappoint; I guarantee it.I have to admit, I read vary few epic fantasies where a Rogue or Thief was the main character and I was a bit skeptical at first, but the author had me in the first 25 pages. I've hardly been able to put it down since. For a first novel, it's excellent and I can't wait until he writes the sequel.
