By Matthew Terry A couple years ago I was asked to read the top eight screenplays in a local screenplay competition. One of the screenplays not only had the most bland characters but nothing of any sort of consequence happened to them. The biggest conflict in the first 90 pages of the script was the fact that one of them was a vegetarian and was given a plate of bacon with their breakfast. This script was a reminder that you needed good, honest, compelling characters in your script - and you needed to put them through hell. Joe Gilford’s great book: “Why does the Screenwriter Cross the Road? (+ Other Screenwriting Secrets)” hits this rule with a hammer or, should I say, sledgehammer. There are many books on screenwriting that deal with subjects such as story development, the act structure, dialogue - but Mr. Gilford’s book is the first one that I’ve read that truly concentrates on character and character development.Where some books may just give lip service to your characters while focusing more on the visuals or beats or acts - Mr. Gilford spends the first 146 (or so) pages of a 200+ page book emphasizing character. Where they come from, how to write them, what to put them through, what elements you need to really make your character come to life and go beyond the page to the screen. Characters that actors would love to play.Post page 146 (or so), Mr. Gilford talks on other subjects such as dialogue, voice-overs and other “gadgets” that you, as a writer, may need - but it all stems from the creation of good, lasting, exciting characters.Where some writers (and students that I have) are enthralled with the nuances of their story, or the twist, the characters are bland and uninspiring. Why would I want to spend two hours with them? Why would a studio want to invest $50 million on them? Why would an actor want to fight for the role?Again, Mr. Gilford answers those questions and gives you ideas on how to deal with characters that don’t move the story along or, God forbid, boring. If you’re looking for a screenwriting book about character development, you don’t need to go any further than this book.Bottom line is that Joe Gilford takes you on a journey across the road, showing you all the screenwiting sights in the process. It’s definitely a journey worth taking.

He doesn't promise that writing a screenplay using his advice will be easy; instead he stresses how challenging and time-consumi By Old Yankee Gal Joe Gilford describes how to roll up your sleeves, gather your storytelling tools and BUILD a screenplay, one that will make your readers (and with luck, audiences) want to know “What happens NEXT?” after every scene. He will convince you of the primacy of character, and introduce you to an unforgettable Czech word that will hover in your mind as you create your next protagonist's Act II ordeal. He doesn't promise that writing a screenplay using his advice will be easy; instead he stresses how challenging and time-consuming it will be. But whether you are an aspiring first-timer, an experienced writer, or are stuck in the middle of an unfinished script, you can't help but feel Joe Gilford's motivating encouragement throughout this wonderful book.“Why Does the Screenwriter Cross the Road?” is a great read, it makes sense, and it's not the least bit boring – just like your next screenplay.
