Horses and Other Voices, by Letitia Sanders

About the Author Letitia Sanders was born and grew up in a small town in Georgia where her pets were among her best friends. She followed her intellectual side to study English and creative writing and became Phi Beta Kappa at Sweet Briar College and Emory University. After the death of her fiancé in Vietnam in 1967, she moved to San Francisco where she began a 23-year career working with computers for IBM. She progressed from programmer on the huge TOPS project, the largest real-time computer system in the world at the time, to becoming an instructor for IBM, traveling around the US, introducing new computers like the PC to IBM personnel and IBM customers. She married Donn Downing, a retired TIME Magazine reporter who had reported from Vietnam and the White House. On weekends she rode Arabian horses in the coastal hills with a friend from whom she bought an Arabian colt named Shaman. Upon retirement from IBM, Letitia completely deserted the computer world to work part-time at the ranch where Shaman was stabled. Her life became centered around horses, and she became a founding member of the California Nevada Arabian Sport Horse Association. Shaman's ability led her to join the US Dressage Foundation. More recently, Letitia decided to exercise the writing talents she had studied in college. In a sense, she found herself back where she started, surrounded by animals and their stories.

Carter Sr. Compelling in triple areas, the author describes her rich transition into retirement; relates a glorious story of her relationship with her horse, and delivers an enlightening personal view of the relationship between humans and equine. Each area is worthy described and on-target from my view from a horse-type family. Disclosure: both my son and granddaughter are highly accomplished equine vets . My top pal during boyhood was a quarterhorse named Speed shared by three brothers as a gift from our Dad who had been a range-riding cowboy in Kansas and Colorado. When Sanders quoted " there was something about the outside of a horse that was good for the inside of man", I related the truth to what I often have witnessed as young Dr. Carter and younger Dr, Arnold practice their critical roles with horses. From generations of horse folks, their practices involve treating lameness at reining events; breeding great horses or performing vital surgeries at Oklahoma Equine Hospital, or meeting needs of fine horses at ranches across the West.I often recall Will Rogers' quote: "I have always felt that the best doctor in the world is the veterinarian. He can't ask his patients what is the matter--he's got to just know." Sanders' book simply offers fresh understanding in other areas where people and horses enrich each other.

By Gail Black I'm a City Girl who married into a family of horsemen and women, and this book brought into crystal-clear focus just how deep the relationship between people and horse can be. My daughter inherited her passion from her dad's side of the family and I'm very proud of her keen interest and love of horses.I loved all the chapters in this little jewel of a book, and even became nervous while reading the Lipizzaner Ladies chapter. I've heard stories of scary situations that happened to family members while hauling a full trailer up steep and narrow grades. Even though I knew the 'ladies' made it all in one piece, Letitia's gifted writing skills keep me on high alert.I really enjoyed the Wanda chapter, (two legged and feathered). Although I've had multiple turkeys on my roof, and even one that got trapped in my chicken yard, I've never taken the time to actually observe their behavior. She compared the three beautiful males to Fancy Bull Fighter type, strutting and showing off their 'Red Capes'.She and Jane Goodall seem to have a lot in common. Both have amazing observational skills and also the ability to put into perfect words what they see and experience. I was not only delighted to read this book, but educated as well.

I like to find a book that is relaxing and fun to read but with a little bit of substance. This was one. What truly made this book so good was the author's natural connection and love for animals that came across in each story. Whatever she was doing, showing or training or managing the ranch, the connection with and care for the various animals came through as her real motivation. If you love animals, this is an awesome read.
