11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A Treasure of Wisdom and Understanding By John Mustol Earth-honoring Faith is a complex and far-ranging book. I, a theology student, have read through it once, read certain parts a second time, and studied other parts. Still I have not yet begun to mine the riches that the book offers to us human inhabitants of planet earth. I have much work yet to do with this book. But still for those who would read through it only once or even those who would use it merely for reference (the index is fairly good), it is an excellent resource.In his earlier book, Earth Community Earth Ethics (1996) Rasmussen set down his vital thesis: namely, that we are part of a larger community-the Earth Community, and we must live accordingly-Earth Ethics. In Earth-honoring Faith, he develops this thesis further, accessing multiple sources, religious, scientific, popular, and otherwise. Like the prophets of old, Rasmussen sees the manifold ecological dangers that, given our current worldview and way of life, are lurking on the horizon, and he urgently calls us to engage in the prodigious task of "a seismic shift in [our] moral universe and in our industrial/postindustrial way of life. It is a shift from the encapsulated human self and human society to the ecosphere as center, boundary, and subject; from human justice to creation justice; and from my bounded human community to the unbounded community of all life" (p. 193). We must undertake "the re-moralization of the landscape (deBuys) . . . the collective religious and cultural task as people struggle to find a new identity while caught in the throes of death and renewal. Singing the Lord's song in a strange land, treating each locale as a sacred trust worthy of well-being, [developing] a sense of place that, like wisdom itself, continually listens to and learns from nature" (p. 354). This is Rasmussen's argument in this book, and a profoundly important one it is if we humans want to persist as residents of this amazing planet.Rasmussen is a superb writer. His distinctive prose style is creative and artful-always pleasing and, at times, brilliant. His historical discussion of the emergence and development of modern techno-industrial society (pp. 166-74) is the best I have ever read. His moral imagination and creativity is fertile and expansive. Throughout the book one is repeatedly startled at the insights Rasmussen offers. Evangelicals like myself may find his apparent pluralism offputting, but, as he says, he, a Christian, is trying to "study together" with other faiths (p. 368). We evangelicals must not let this get in the way of "studying together" with him in this book. There is too much treasure to be missed.I am a mere student of theology with limited knowledge, but I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Everyone ought to read it - everyone. It is, perhaps, one of those books, and Rasmussen is perhaps one of those people, to which, a hundred years from now, humans will look back and remark on their wisdom and prescience. As we say today about the ancient prophets, people will then say of Rasmussen, "Why didn't more people listen to him?"A proverb says, "How much better it is to get wisdom than gold, to get understanding than silver" (16:16). This book is a treasure of wisdom and understanding. It's expensive (gold and silver), but it is more than worth it. Buy it and and read it-now.

The bottom line is that this book should be required reading for anyone who cares about the future of our planet as a habitable place for humanity. While the book is written by a Christian theologian and ethicist, it will almost certainly appeal to those of almost any faith community. Prof. Larry Rasmussen is extraordinarily well versed in many of the world religious traditions and writes from the perspective that all faith communities have an inherent ethic to honor and care for the Earth. The only minor issues I had while reading this book are 1) that it is a bit wordy at times and 2) from my perspective as a research scientist, some technical subjects are presented in an overly simplistic fashion without at least acknowledging the complexity of the issues. Bottom line, a powerful and thought provoking book.

A Challenging and Revolutionary Approach to Ethics for the 21st Century and Beyond By Thomas Martinez This is a very important book by one of today's leading Christian Ethicist. Professor Larry Rasmussen, The Reinhold Niebuhr Professor Emeritus of Social Ethics at Union Theological Seminary, draws on the accumulated wisdom of Western Religion and the insights brimming from the lives of social visionaries such as Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Vaclav Havel. In so doing Rasmussen compelling makes the case that we are living in an age that requires revolutionary changes in our understanding of humanity's place within the vast and wondrous tapestry of creation. This is a sweeping masterpiece that gleans a lifetime of scholarship, offering fresh insights, liturgical resources (the section on water reads like poetry), and what Walter Brueggemann has dubbed Prophetic Imagination. This book calls for a new ethic and supplies us with the building blocks for creating just that.
