Walking with Jesus through His Word:Discovering Christ in All the Scriptures. Phillipsburg: P&R Publishing, 2015. 320 pp. $16.99I was first exposed to Dennis Johnson in 2007 when I was assigned to read his book Him We Proclaim fCFDj6S_WoAAfK6m.jpg-largeor a preaching class at Boyce College. At that time I had not yet been exposed to any form of "Christ-centered" preaching, or biblical theology, and Johnson's book impacted me greatly. I was excited to see his new work from P&R Publishing.Johnson's new book is not an academic work (like Him We Proclaim) and has very few footnotes. The book is broken down into six parts and ten chapters. Each chapter ends with a set of study questions making it a great resource for small groups or personal discipleship. Though it is not "academic," the book is very thorough in explaining the way in which Jesus himself interpreted the Old Testament. In the Introduction Johnson details his mentors and those who have influenced him through correspondence and throughout the book his Covenantal Theology and Westminster background are prevalent.In Part 1: Beginning the Journey, Johnson explains the basis of his book; that the Bible as a whole is bound together by the central theme, plotline, and hero...Jesus. We should read the Bible how Jesus read and taught the Bible. The book therefore is based on Luke 24 in which Jesus, on the road to Emmaus, teaches that all of the Old Testament points to him. Before the death and resurrection of Jesus the apostles were misunderstood in their understanding of the Messiah and fled for their lives when Jesus was arrested. After the resurrection, the Book of Acts describes the boldness of the apostles and their teachings of Christ from the Old Testament. What changed? Luke 24: Jesus opened their minds and hearts to the truths of the Scriptures.The rest of the book is organized through a "journey" metaphor in which you have to know where you are ("You are Here"), how to read the road signs, understand the lay of the land, recognize the landmarks, and finally understand how walking with Jesus changes us. In Part 2: Reading the Road Sings, Johnson uses a story given from Charles Spurgeon in which it is said like "all roads lead to London, all Scripture leads to Christ." Scripture is the best interpreter of Scripture, therefore we should be informed about how to read the Bible from the Bible itself. To understand the meaning of any passage Johnson expounds on four factors that help a reader understand the meaning of the text: language, circumstances canonical context, and purpose.Part 3: Reading the Road Sings, explains how the biblical authors use typology as road signs and markers that find their fulfillment in Jesus. Part 4: Getting the Lay of the Land, is broken down into three chapters that cover the issue of covenants as the means by which the Scriptures move from Adam to Jesus. Johnson argues from a traditional Covenantal Theology perspective that the covenants begin in Genesis 1-3 with a covenant of works (Genesis 1-2) and a covenant of promise (Genesis 3). Part 5: Recognizing the Landmarks, also is broken into three chapters in which the offices of prophet, priest, and king are addressed as they find their fulfillment in Christ. The book then ends with Part 6: Are We There Yet?, in which Johnson applies how seeing Christ through out the Scriptures should lead us to repentance ad obedience. Understanding that all of the Scriptures point to and are about Jesus should leas us to marvel and worship Him, to hope and trust Him, and ultimately make us more like Him.Johnson has succeeded in his effort to present a Christ-centered hermeneutic of reading the Scriptures. While his aim to not be 'academic" this is not an introduction type of book. Other works by Vaughn Roberts, T.D. Alexander, and Graeme Goldsworthy are shorter and argue a long similar lines as far as a central theme, or Christ-centered exegesis. That doesn't mean that Johnson's work is to be disregarded, on the contrary it should be a required reading for anyone entering Bible College, Seminary, or called to teach/preach the Scriptures. In particular I appreciated the application Johnson gave each chapter and specifically how King Joash wasted a "seminary" type education and deterred in his faith once his mentor passed away. While seminary can point the way, only God can change the heart.Because of the length and depth of the book I would suggest and recommend to fellow pastors and Bible students. The book could also be used in a church setting, in a one on one type of discipleship, but it would be difficult for the average layman to pick-up and make it through the book without guidance and encouragement. If you struggle with putting the Bible together and want a through presentation of what a Christ-centered approach looks like I would recommend this book to you. Even though it is written from a Presbyterian background, the main point of the book is applicable across Evangelical denominations.**I received this book free from the publisher. Excellent By Joey Parker In his new book Walking With Jesus Through His Word Dennis Johnson retells a story that Charles Spurgeon once told of a young preacher asking for feedback from a sermon and after multiple questions finally asked what the older respected pastor found wrong with his sermon. This was the old preachers response and the exchange that followed: "There was no Christ in it." Now the young man began to defend himself, objecting, “Well, Christ was not in the text; we are not to be preaching Christ always, we must preach what is in the text.” In response, the older pastor drew this analogy: “Don’t you know, young man, that from every town, and every village, and every little hamlet in England, wherever it may be, there is a road to London?” “Yes,” said the young man. “Ah!” said the old divine, “and so from every text in Scripture, there is a road to the metropolis of the Scriptures, that is Christ. And my dear brother, your business is when you get to a text, to say, ‘Now what is the road to Christ?’ and then preach a sermon, running along the road towards the great metropolis—Christ. And,” said he, “I have never yet found a text that had not got a road to Christ in it, and if I ever do find one that has not a road to Christ in it, I will make one; I will go over hedge and ditch but I would get at my Master, for the sermon cannot do any good unless there be a savour of Christ in it.” This is essentially Johnson's aim in this book: to show the reader how to discover Christ in all of Scripture.Johnson recognizes this is quite the claim to make. He states, "The title of this book implies an audacious claim. The claim is that the sixty-six books contained in the Christian Scriptures, the Bible, which were written by dozens of people in many different centuries, are bound together by a central theme, a single plotline, and a unique Hero, Jesus the Messiah." Most Christians would agree that Jesus is the central figure of the Bible. It would be hard to be a Christian and doubt the significance of Christ, yet do we consciously read Scripture with this thought in mind when we come to the text? This again is what Johnson does a wonderful job of unpacking in this book.What Johnson doesn't mean is twisting Scripture and making wild leaps to try to fit Jesus into a text. He is aware of this issue and addresses it by saying, "you might have encountered approaches that connect the Bible’s diverse pieces to Christ in ways that seem far-fetched and unpersuasive, twisting texts in ways that suggest more about the interpreter’s creativity than about the meaning and message that the Holy Spirit intended to convey. Implausible links between far-flung Bible passages and Jesus’ person and mission make us justifiably cautious, even suspicious. I share your concerns, but invite you to explore a sounder way of connecting all the Scriptures—especially the Old Testament in all its diversity—to Christ, the approach that we see applied by the inspired authors of the New Testament itself." In Walking With Jesus Through His Word, Johnson does a wonderful job of doing just that. Instead of twisting texts he shows the reader a sounder way to walk through the Scriptures and to find Christ in all of Scripture. I found this to be an excellent book and one that every pastor/teacher would do well to read.I received a copy of this book from P&R Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Christ in All of Scripture By blbooks I love the premise of Dennis Johnson's Walking With Jesus Through His Word. The premise is simple: Christ can be found in all of Scripture--not just the New Testament. Believers can benefit greatly by understanding HOW Christ can be found in each and every book of the Bible. Sometimes, Johnson argues, Christ can clearly be seen. For example, when New Testament writers under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, clearly connect Old Testament passages with Jesus Christ the Savior. He can be seen as the Seed, the Branch, the Passover Lamb, the Son of David, etc. Other times Christ's presence is more subtle and takes a little effort. For example, he can be seen in the covenants, with a covenantal understanding of the Bible. He can be seen in the roles of priest, prophet, and king. Johnson guides his readers into a proper understanding of how to read the Bible. He covers all types and genres of the Bible. One of the things I appreciate most about Walking With Jesus Through His Word is how natural it is, how he believes that believers should learn how to read the bible by reading the bible. In other words, he argues that the New Testament writers show us how to read the Bible, how to approach it, how to interpret it. Also by letting bible texts shed light on other bible texts.Walking With Jesus Through His Word is divided into six parts: "Beginning the Journey," "You are Here," "Reading the Road Signs," "Getting the Lay of the Land," Recognizing the Landmarks," and "Are We There Yet?"Walking With Jesus is somewhat unique in that it is a way to teach a method of how to read the Bible. (At the end of each chapter--or almost each chapter--Johnson allows readers to put in practice what they've learned.) Other books tend to share their own conclusions, but, don't walk you step by step through the process.Who would benefit from reading Walking With Jesus Through His Word?*Those who want to connect the dots and grasp the big picture of what the Bible is all about.*Those readers who want a refresher course on covenant theology.*Those who love Christ and want to see him glorified.*Those readers interested in learning to study the Bible for themselves instead of being reliant on study Bibles.
